Fairway Market Kips Bay

The store is pretty good in general, but they are really making a mockery of the law meant to reduce plastic bag use. They hand out "reusable" plastic bags (for 30 cents?) to people who don't bring their own bags. If you look at how many of these bags they hand out and how many people come to the store with "reusable" bags they got from a previous visit, it is clear that *not one* bag is ever reused. Why don't they just use paper bags like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods?

Decent selection of fresh and dry foods, with reasonable prices. I like the big area of self-checkout counters that allows me to just scan and pay myself. The two things they can improve are A. to put a sign pointing down the escalators on the 1st floor and B. to leave their bags at the self-checkout area instead of having someone carrying them around.

Do not come to this store past 9:45 PM. They do not close as advertised. Horrible experience today, 01/11/25. I had to buy some cellery and limes to make a soup for my sick grandmother on this cold winter day (32F today). At 9:48, I arrived at the store, and security told me the store was closed. I refuted and showed him my cell phone, telling him I still had 12 minutes according to the store advertised closing hours on a Saturday. He wouldn't let me pass by the door. I waited and insisted, with no luck. At 9:59 PM (Yes, I begged him because my grandma needed the soup), he willingly let another lady come in to shop. There, I noticed I was being discriminated. Please, do not come to this shop to buy anything past 9:45 PM. The tall skinny security guard will feel empowered and chances are he will discriminate against you.

I arrived at this location at 9:50 PM to buy 1 pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and the doors were locked with the security guy refusing to let me in saying they are already closed. Meanwhile, their advertised closing time is 10 PM. Usually, I’m here mostly for the kosher section, some days it’s great some days the selection is really poor and the expiration dates are really close. The most annoying thing is the prices-there’s stickers on certain items with A certain price, but when I get to the cashier to pay the price is different and always more expensive. I’m sure there’s a lot of people that don’t notice this problem and think they’re paying a certain amount when they take that item from the shelf but at the end they pay more.

This used to be one of my favorite Fairway destinations, but that has changed since they shut down a few stores. Regardless of the time that you visit I swear I am in two different stores. The mess left in some of the aisles makes it a burden to get around. The employees just leave stock all over the place and they move on to perform other tasks without first completing what they already started. I have seen unattended spills, trash filled aisles and wet products in the deli cases. On the otherhand, the meat, seafood and produce aisles are almost always immaculate. They really need to get their act together.

Quality Store that’s well run and has everything you need. Great prices and quick check out! Best coffee!!

I recently went to the Fairway Kips Bay store and had an extremely frustrating experience. As someone who is currently pregnant, I’m more careful about what I spend my money on. At checkout, I realized I didn’t bring my reusable bag, and the cashier told me I’d need to purchase one. I explained to the store manager, Dayana, that I didn’t have the extra money to spend on the bag at that moment and asked if there was any way to work around it. Instead of offering any understanding or flexibility, Dayana was incredibly condescending. She made me feel embarrassed for even asking and showed zero empathy for my situation. As a customer, especially a pregnant one, I was hoping for a little kindness or understanding, but instead, I left the store feeling humiliated. The lack of compassion and customer care is unacceptable, and I won’t be returning.

Famous grocery store in New York City, Fairway. There are many store location in NYC, this store is very big store. I visited this store everyday during my stay in NYC. They sell many Fairway's original brand foods such as bagel, yogurt, cake, chocolate, and so on. I bought some cheese cakes during my stay, every cheese cake was excellent. And you can buy local cheeses at this store!

Huge store with lots of variety that sells pretty much everything you need. Prices here can be a bit more expensive than other grocery stores for certain items. Love their olive bar and selection of cheeses. I've also purchased Krispy Kreme donuts here a few times.

Fairway still has excellent customer service and the best prices for groceries. I get items here that are not sold elsewhere. They have sections for each type of food, coffee, fresh meat and fish, olive bar, bakery and on and on. I'm recommending Fairway again this year. I'm also going to start checking the app for coupons and downloading them to my new rewards account. My advice is to get to the nearest Fairway early in the morning! No matter which location I shop it's always busy. I like this location as well as the one in my neighborhood.

Fairway has fine Gruyère and the aroma wafts around. While their cheeses are varied and both domestic and international ones are available. They carry my favorite yogurt - Valley Shepherd Simply Sheep Milk Yogurt, which I used to buy at Essex Market and then the store closed down. Each section carries a variety of items and the produce section is big in both the organic and regular items. Along with a large variety of fresh fruits. I buy organic chicken here and fresh fish. The body care products are always an attraction for me and when j have time I like to browse to see what I can afford. Today Krystal showed me how to use the computerized shopping carts. This was fascinating. She said that younger customers like to use them but not the elderly. I think it's useful for the personal shoppers who buy for people ordering from Instacart. Next time I plan to do a practice tour with it. If one is a member then the screen shows the special select prices. Service here is nice and there are two elevators, escalators to go up and down and a ladies and gents restroom. The ladies restroom is not always clean or cleaned on a regular basis but it is good that they have one.

I love shopping here when I have time. Quite large this store compare to other supermarkets so I don't bump into other customers most of the time. If you love ice creams, this store have so many options. It's next to the movie theater and Starbucks is across the street.(it used to be Baskin but now it's closed) I've attached some photos and I hope it will help.

If you still think that the most expensive ingredients will make your recipe taste better, then drop your money at Fairway. A good cook can put together a fine meal without a thought about luxury ingredients Fairway, however has a lot of spices,condiments, and specialty foods that are not carried by other markets for a fair price. So if you know that you are thinking about adding special touches to your food, Fairway is a great place to shop. On the other hand the prices are fairly high.

Along the lines of other people's reviews - they're selling expired food at this store. It's shameful. Everything is extremely overpriced, you'd be better off at the nearby Target Grocery or Trader Joe's. Granted it's a larger store with more name brands, it's still not worth it for the prices and shockingly low quality.

I have no problems with Fairway as far as a supermarket. My issue is that they have pretty large knives near the deli dept. Anyone can pick them up. How are they not under lock and key? NYC has had 3 deadly stabbing and another knife attack today. Wake up Fairway, or I'm taking them. You're leaving weapons out in the easy taking

There's a funky smell as you walk in. Like an "off vegetables" type of smell. Huge selection of items. Prices are ok for the area. But given the smell, I got the overwhelming sense not to buy any meat or other items that could go bad. Customer service is woeful. I felt like I was in a correctional facility. When I was bagging up my items, I asked where the bags were, and the guy working the area just tossed two empty bags at me while mumbling something that I couldn't quite catch. Not good.

catering has reduced wuantity over qualit's.. one pint gravy for 10 adults for Thanksgiving???

This place truly sucks. customer service ranges from surly and unhelpful to spiteful to nonexistent. going to Trader Joe's is like heaven, here is like the ninth circle of hell. I live one block away and I will never return.

Only giving 2 starts for convenience and the fact they have a decent deli section. Otherwise, as others have noted, the store is extremely overpriced and the employees at the front of the store (if you can find one) are surly and generally useless. They must do a booming delivery business because the store is usually empty. Kind of a depressing place to shop. Nothing is ever on sale. You spend $30 here for 5 items while that same $30 at Trader Joes will get you a full bag of groceries. Not sure how this place stays in business.

Once this company was owned by a family. It has since gone through several sales. And along the way, in each instance, in my opinion, it has gotten worse and more expensive. There is much less attention and provision of high-quality foods, whether cheese, fish, meat or bakery. Several examples: They got rid of the butcher, and with it any quality meat, especially steak. Their butchers were once excellent. Butchers are important, if you eat meat and want decent quality. A butcher would cut a steak thick enough that you could cook it to a medium rare with a char or "crust" on it. They had slab bacon, which could either be sliced to order -thicker than anything in a package, or cut by weight. These were signs of a better market. They also reduced the amount of wild caught fish, and nice fish in general. IN the bakery, they once had products from Continental Bakery, including, for example, Italian three-color cookies with the traditional marzipan in them (which is hard to find). Now harder, since Fairway no longer has them. To my mind it's just another overpriced average market now. Very few reasons to shop there.

Fairway market is one of the best grocery stores in NYC. Even with the bankruptcy and the shutdown of their locations outside of Manhattan, including Queens and Brooklyn, I still enjoy shopping at their locations in the city. They have weekly sales which generally have good deals. A few notable things at Fairway has to be their dairy department including the Fairway brand grass fed organic milk which always sells at a reasonable price. The bakery items and cheese aisles always have great deals. The meat department is another must stop where the butchers will cater to your needs with the utmost care and priority. If you happen to see Lou at the meat counter, he'll take care of you I'm sure with a smile. Just tell him what you need and give him a few minutes to get it wrapped. This location requires you to descend escalators to shop. If you don't need the shopping cart, go with the basket so you won't need to wait for the elevator to get back to ground level.

At Fairway FACIAL RECOGNITION technology, biometric information is being collected and used to prevent shoplifting. The have a good selection but I don't approve. I'm sticking with Trader Joes only now

Have been going to Fairway for years and when they closed the location by me that I would always go to, I was pleased to find a Fairway in Kips Bay. You just can't beat the selection at this store - they have everything you could think of and more. I've gone at various times throughout the day and although the check out lines can sometimes be long, their selection is always full and I have always been able to find everything I needed. Great store!

They have literally everything anyone can possibly need in terms of groceries and even daily essentials like toilet paper and paper towels. Impressive fresh coffee and imported cheese selection! I go for fresh baguettes, which are baked in house three times a day three times a day, and most definitely stop by in the evenings if I'm on my way home and it's around 830p for discounted sushi; and on occasion their fried chicken (it's really good!). The latest closing hours when compared to nearby trade joes. Sure, stuff may be expensive matching Manhattan prices, but honestly, pretty much everything goes on sale in their rotating circular, including Haagen dazs pints going for 1.88 a pint, talenti for 2.88 in 2022- it's just a matter of timing and what's on sale for the week.

I only come here if I'm in a pinch, or if nearby Trader Joe's doesn't carry the product that I'm looking for, which is rare. Fairway isn't even a great place to go if you're short on time because the lines can get crazy long and don't move all that quickly. What is great about Fairway is that you're bound to find whatever niche grocery item you're looking for, with aisles almost as far as the eye can see. The seafood and meat section is extensive but not at all the freshest. And the prices are, well, about what you'd expect for a grocery store in Manhattan. Incredibly high. If you're looking for a specific item, ducking in and out of this Fairway is fine, but for general trips to the grocery store, I wouldn't make this my regular spot.

Since being bought by new ownership, the quality has taken a nosedive. Found MOLD on the cheeses (Locatelli and Parmagiano Reggiano) and milk EXPIRED a week ago. I feel bad for people who do not check their items before purchasing because they expect better quality....but beware.

Fairway is the best! They offer a wide variety of items items and have the best olive bar!

Yolanda was extremely rude on July 16th. An item wasn't ringing up so she had to do a price check. I said the name of the item and she responded with "I can read". After she came back, and told me the price, I changed my mind. It was twice the price I was expecting. I told her that and she just went off, rudely telling me that because she did the price check I now had to buy it. And then she threatened to call the cops because I started filming her.

This place is BAD. Not only is the staff unfriendly but they sell expired food. I bought $30 worth of expired meat, including chicken 10 DAYS after it's sell by date. Lesson learned to always check the dates... especially here. Gross.

The great thing about Fairway is that you can probably find anything you want here. However, there are so many things in stock that the store probably has hard time organizing things, and thus we're left with jumbled, packed aisles of goods. If you have spare time to explore and discover items, and have patience to wait out the long line to the cashier, you'll be certainly be happy to shop at Fairway. I like looking around the supermarket in hopes of finding something cool, so Fairway is for me. But it's really far from Astoria so I don't get to visit Fairway as often as I want. Meanwhile, I try to satisfy my grocery needs at Key Food.

Everything here is extremely overpriced, if they could charge you an entry fee they would. Save your time and money and go down the street to Trader Joe's

Seriously, I adore this store, even though I don't shop here often. I shop outside of NYC; however, Fairway's fruit is top shelf, an its grapes especially are a bargain at only $1 more per pound than the street! The sales it has are great. Most of all, the salespeople are ALL so nice and helpful! Happy to support Fairway.

I was walking around the city and got a bit hungry. Randomly popped into this store, and their sushi stand has the best sushi and rolls in town!!!!!! Fresh and yummy, delicious. I may stop by this fairway just for their sushi corner.

3.5 stars. Before I moved further uptown, the location in the UWS was my to-go grocery store (for 16 years!). This location is far from my current apartment, but very close to my work, so I often go stock up on non-perishable items. The store is huge, with basically everything you can possibly need. My only complains are that they could have more organic products for produce, and prices tend to be too high (especially when compared to the nearby Trader Joe's). I still use it for some items I can't find at Trader Joe's (or else), but most of my grocery shopping happens elsewhere.

The fact they are still open with normal working hours and normal working conditions deserves the highest praise. The employees are doing their best during the pandemic, and have been more than helpful and kind, especially the staff working the fish and bread stations. This location also restocks regularly - I have been able to find everything I need. I can't believe there are reviews that (1) criticize how they're answering the phone, (2) call the workers filthy, and (3) brag about leaving the cashier with $400 of groceries because he wouldn't honor your $10 coupon. Seriously, do you realize how ridiculous and whiny you people sound? WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC - not the time to be an entitled brat! Anyways, this Fairway is great. Huge selection of everything. Heavens forbid I need a new coffee - there are actually hundreds of choices, from fresh to boxed. The cheeses here are some of my favorites, especially the generic manchego you can find around the store. The lines have been a bit longer because people are hoarding, but they move just as fast despite there being half the normal number of cashiers. People who are complaining about menial things don't understand how lucky they are that grocery stores are still open. Some grocery stores are now closing because of insufficient, sick staff and delivery services in NYC are backed up. You'd also be cranky if you had to be on the front lines all day without sufficient PPE. In Murray Hill, we are lucky to have this Fairway. Screw the haters. Thank you to the staff here!

Convenient with a large selection but shoppers beware - sale signs often don't match scanned prices at the register or the app! Fraudulent signage throughout the store!

Love love love fairway. This is where i do all of my shopping. Great produce selection. Great variety of standard products. Massive organics section in both nonperishables and produce. Very fresh produce. They have ethnic aisles with Mexican, asian, european, and other products. They have a massive coffee selection with barrels of every kind of whole bean you can imagine. They will advise you on best kind of coffee for you, weigh the beans, grind them at request, etc. and the section smells amazingggg. Also a very large beer and drink selection. One of the best standard beer selections in the city outside of a craft bottle store. Massive meat counter and fish and seafood counters. Fish is usually pretty good. Meat selection is always great. Prices are reasonable. Variety is the best you will find in the city. Both packaged and unpackaged versions of all meats. As well as a separate deli counter for sliced meats, cheeses, and prepared foods. There's a whole fresh pasta section in addition to dry pasta. An olive oil bar. A pickle and olive bar. A dried fruit and nut and nut butter section. A protein bar section. A candy area. A cold beer pick your six pack area. A hot bar for hot prepped foods. Etc. they have it all. They also do free shipping if you spend $100 pr more within approved delivery zones. Which we always take advantage of if we are doing our large semi-monthly shopping trip. If you go to gristedes or dagastinos to do your shopping when fairway is a close walk you are a sheer moron. Sorry.

Since under new ownership, the store is slowing going to ****. All of the quality staples I have become accustomed to over the years are disappearing , and being replaced with lower quality items. I understand changing the hours, but now the meat and deli counters close ridiculously early. Last Friday I went to go pickup a nice steak for the weekend, and the butcher counter was closed at 6:30pm. Everything was wrapped up. There was 3.5 hours till the store closed! Unacceptable! I will change my review when I see improvements in then new management's approached. Until then I'll be at Whole Foods in Inion Square.

This was an absolute farce. After having no delivery slots, I received an email saying I could have delivery in 2 hours. This was in fact true, the delivery was made quickly. What wasn't said was that Instacart could provide a quick delivery BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL OUT OF EVERYTHING. I asked for about thirteen items and received 5. I wanted no substitutions, and ordered two cartons of Stewarts diet orange cream soda for a total of 8 bottles. There was a substitution made for Sunkist diet, which is a pretty good product. But the two cartons of Sunkist added up to 24 cans, which was a ridiculous amount. P,S. The shopper did a fine job. The problem is that by omitting the fact that they had no stock, they totally misrepresented the situation I was buying into.

I just got my order from FROM FAIRWAY THRU INSTACART. I did not receive the below items/orquantity. I got one small bunch of carrots AND NOT 3LBS OF CARROTS. 1 CUCUMBER, NOT A ZUCCINI. I need this ITEMS TODAY to complete a recipe that I am in the process of cooking. I called them. Customer service said that all they can do was issue a refund. I explained that I didn't need a refund, I need the items. I was told basically so sad too bad. If we were to redeliver we would have to charge you $35.00! WTF! THINK TWICE BEFORE ORDERING FROM INSTACART. Every time I have ordered there has been something wrong, something rotten or something missing!!!! LAST TIME FOR ME!!! Cal Organic Farms Organic Carrots 2 lb Current price: $3.00 /each Organic Zucchini Squash Current price: ~$1.79 /item

Like a hybrid of a Whole Foods, a Trader Joe's, & a big supermarket. Good: 1- Wide Selection & includes both cheap (e.g. Salmon) & pricey Caviar, Tripe, Bone Marrow, & good smelly cheeses. 2-Some specialty items like various Jamons. Like the $199 a pound Iberico Jamon, which price reflects the unique porkers in Spain who only eat acorns. Does it taste better & more tender than others...yep! But it is a pricey luxury which is generally almost impossible to find in most of California....nor was I aware of it back in early NYC years. 3-Good selection of various veges & fruits, but you can tell they were picked unripened, & then artificially ripened (e.g. Ethylene Oxide ?) 4-Bread are diverse & have a nice crunch...but they seem to run out of Rye Bread too easily. Bad: 1- Nowhere as good selection nor freshness as in many coastal California stores, especially since they are either grown there, or in nearby Mexico. 2- Does not come anywhere near most of the fresh Farmer's Markets in CA & elsewhere. 3- Staff in general seems underpaid & not too knowledgable. 4-Like a big box store, but big prices. 5- Cheese selection is not diverse enough. In summary, after being spoiled by California fresh food, this place underwhelms me, but I imagine it is great for local denizens...especially after they paid their mortgage on million dollar apartments. Fairway also came in handy for my NYC visit, since it was between NYU Medical Center (where I was a health care proxy for my very sick mom) & the Hyatt Herald Square (my room had a small frig for snacks).

Big grocery store in the area. Probably the biggest around here. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 9/10 You think it's pretty small just coming in, but the BAM, there is a huge basement floor that is literally like any other store that you are familiar with if you are from the suburbs like me. It's not quite that massive of course, but it sure is the closest thing that you'll get around here. It's clean, expansive and has a decent selection. SERVICE : 7/10 Average, no complaints here. FOOD: 8/10 Good selection. There's even a hot food section which I didn't check out though I know that they do have some rotisserie chicken. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 8/10 It's either here or Trader Joe's. OVERALL: 8/10

Fairway went bankrupt earlier this year and is now owned by ShopRite's parent company. The only reason I know it's because I thought it odd that my recent bills have been roughly 40% higher, and looked it up. All the fresh sections are gone. Cheese is spread o ut in at least four different sections of the store. No olive bar; some staple frozen items are sold just refrigerated. I saw almond milk in three different places. Deli meat and the like are now pre-cut and both times I purchased, had to immediately throw away. You know when ham starts to feel fuzzy? Yeah. WTF. Guess we have to stay waiting in the long-ass TJ lines or find an online delivery service. This just sucks.

Rude servers, esp. Jerome G, who accused me of try to get some money off when I questioned a mislabelled product. Go to trader joes where the culture is to actually be nice and serve customers properly.

This store (the original Fairways location) has nothing to do with the family run neighborhood market it once was. In recent years it has changed hands several time, apparently from one hedge fund to another private equity firm. All that remains is the name that gets bought and sold. It is now just another overpriced business with poor quality control and clearly unhappy and stressed employees that doesn't give a dman about its customers. It is crowded, hectic and unfriendly, and the checkout process is miserable. Oh did I mention overpriced? One example out of many: last week I stopped by to get some fresh corn and almost fell down when I saw the price for one ear of corn that didn't look all that fresh: 1.33 USD. That was, I repeat, for one (one!!) ear of corn, at the height of summer! That was the last time, and that time I decided I will never go back there. (Note: I have been living within 10 blocks of Fairways for decades.)

This is a dis-organized sh##-hole! You should avoid at all cost (literally). After waiting in the express line for 10 minutes they tell me this is actually the main line so go wait in the non-express line. Besides that many of the items are overpriced because they are mislabeled and in the wrong place. I can only speak for the Kips Bay location but it really is horrible with long lines.

This store has been in a free-fall for a while and now it's just impossible. There is no staff at numerous counters and if you ask for a manager, they're all "in a meeting". Good luck finding anything you need.

You can pretty much find every type of produce and grocery item here. They have organic in multitudes. Gourmet international items as well. Authentic Cadbury chocolate, plus Marmite, French grocery , Austrian, German, Italian, Spanish, Israeli, Greek, Caribbean, Swiss, etc. Great prices. Fresh always and the staff are always helpful. Love this huge shopping expedition.

I was at this Fairway at 7:30 PM on Sunday, May 22, 2022 and was shocked to see that no in person cash registers were open. This was unacceptable and I would not be back.

We all miss the old Fairway, but let's be honest - we didn't go there because the team was friendly. The selection is still pretty good for produce, fresh bread, coffee, meat, fish, cheese and weird things you need for recipes. And that egg salad with dill is still special. Prices are all over the place, so you can get a good deal sometimes if you shop smart - that's true everywhere, isn't it? Recent improvements: checkout is fast and has been a little friendlier lately, and the self-check has also improved. Someone at the top should be even more present in the store in a positive way to support employees. I would like to add more stars and will check back again.

In a clear violation of state law, Fairway didn't take back a glass bottle from Ronnybrook Farms for deposit refund.

The one on 30th and 2nd here refused to check me out. I had complicated produce I didn't feel comfortable checking out but they yelled I was stupid and only self checkout. When i tried asking the manager why these were closed, Solomon the manager on shift hid in corner talking on his phone and refused to give me eye contact. Would not suggest.

This Fairway is a great addition to the neighborhood for several reasons: 1) They offer a wide selection of organic, vegan, ethnic and specialty items. 2) Breads are fresh baked and come in many varieties. 3) Prepared foods are delicious and cheaper than eating out. Our favorites are the brocoli rabe, the grilled chicken and the buffalo shrimp. 4) It is so clean! 5) Lots of fresh produce, not rotten garbage. 6) Fresh. Mozzarlla.In water! and the other deli-cacies. It's nice to have this in the neighborhood and I'm grateful to have it.

Love this store and all the options for food that it brings to kips bay. Good produce and fresh breads also! The staff are not the best which is my only complaint.

Very large selection of products, and quality of prepared foods is good. HOWEVER, my low rating is due to the following: - 95% of the time that I am in there, I have to wait on a long line to check out (there are many empty registers in the back that should be utilized during busy times; they need more cashiers) - On more than one occasion, I've almost bought expired products (one of which was over a month past date), - This store is not cheap. Although, rent for their space is probably high, which, I guess, could justify the high prices. - They have way too many products. I'm a fan of variety, but if I were to try and find something without asking an employee, it could take five minutes (which is actually a lot of time) and that excludes the additional five to 10 minutes that I have to stand in line to pay.
