The Best Dishes Eater Austin Editors Ate in 2019, Mapped

"The Parlour, the rustic new tasting room from Southold Farm & Cellar in Johnson City, is right off the main square of Johnson City, serves the winery’s selections (my favorite was the juicy red Lightsome). Additionally, the snacks include a killer cheese and charcuterie board with Confituras jam, Pure Luck chèvre, and mesquite-bean baguette sourdough served with rich, creamy butter from Vermont. —Erin Russell" - Erin Russell, Nadia Chaudhury

Wow! What an experience!! We went back with our adult kids for a second wine tasting and you can’t forget the butter board! Delicious!!

Super adorable little tasting room. Lots of charm and character. The staff was very knowledgeable and welcoming. Lot's of outdoor seating available to enjoy the fresh air and wine. Inside is very cute and clean. Plenty of photo ops. My favorite wine is the desert wine Holly Dolly. Elizabeth was so kind and professional. Very accommodating and warm. On my second visit Elizabeth made a Vegan Charcuterie board special order for my wine tasting.

Stopped by on our way to Fredericksburg and loved our visit! Staff was sooo friendly and accommodating to our big group with 4 toddlers. It was a great experience, the sangria was very good too! Highly recommend and would love to visit again soon!

The people here are so sweet and the wines are really good. We brought our two kids and they were super accommodating with toys and such. We ended up buying three bottles because the wine was so good and the experience was excellent.

Google
Hidden gem at the end/beginning of 290 Wine Trail! Went in not expecting much and we were blown away by the wines and service at Farmhouse. The owners are farmers first, winemakers second and the you can tell that their grapes from the high plains are of the highest quality. Each wine we tasted had a unique flavor profile and was memorable. Sarah, who was pouring wine for us in the tasting room, was super knowledge about the wines, grapes, and winemaking processes as she is a winemaker herself. Incredible hospitality - the Farmhouse tasting room felt like sipping wine in the cozy home of some good friends.

Google
Absolutely phenomenal, cant say enough about what a good stop in Johnson City this is. The wine here is excellent. Excellent. Staff is very knowledgable. And the charcuterie board i had is 110% better than what I’ve had at your average 4 star restaurant experience. Stop and enjoy yourself in texas wine country here, you wont be disappointed.

Google
Madison provided an experience we will never forget! And the wine was amazinggggg

Google
Have seen Farmhouse for a while when driving through Johnson City. Fiancé and a few of her friends were doing a wine tour for her bachelorette and decided to make this one of her stops. Service was amazing. Large outdoor space. Inside, each room is set up with comfortable seating for your group. Carla was friendly, knowledgeable, and everyone felt at home. Charcuterie board was amazing. Look forward to our next visit.

Yelp
Omg I am so embarrassed I didn't take photos.... I seriously thought this was a tasting room! ‍ Made a quick change from our last stop to head back to Austin for football and SO GLAD WE DID!!!! First off, this is NOT A TASTING ROOM ONLY!!! They grow the grapes sold to many local wineries so they can make their own wines. Loved that they know the whole history and allowed the space to taste and experience what we were tasting and experiencing. The whole staff was so willing to help, knowledgeable, and friendly. The charcuterie was more than we were expecting and so eclectic! The freeze dried okra and mushrooms were icing on the cake dear lawd! The shop was cute too and everyone else enjoying Farmhouse was incredibly nice (and the dogs!) I honestly cannot wait to return again with more time and not on a last minute change to truly experience the wine more.

Yelp
One of my favorites! I've loved seeing their wine list grow and the service is always amazing! The charcuterie board is TO DIE FOR!! This place is so relaxing I love walking around to shop a little bit or chilling on the blue couch in the off room. Free popcorn is always perfect too haha

Yelp
Amazing wine and tasting experience! Denise was so nice and helpful! The charcuterie and butter boards looked great. Cute store to shop in as well. I wish we could've stayed longer, but we had a reservation afterwards to get to. Cultivated is my favorite! I should've joined the membership while we were there, but hey there is always next time!!

Yelp
Mackenzie is so sweet! My mom & sis really don't drink wine and can be .. well.. anyway. I sat down and listened to my mom and sister try this and that and Mackenzie was SO PATIENT! She was not only sweet, patient but also very professional. Very nice place, good selection, great service. I'm glad we stopped

Yelp
We loved this little winery. We made an advance reservation and we're given our own private room for our wine tasting. The wines were tasty and there was free popcorn.

Yelp
We had a wonderful time here! We had a group of 7 and it was perfect place to gather and enjoy some wine (prohibition rose-I highly recommend) charcuterie and great friends. Terry, was outstanding and we really appreciate the time she took explaining the wines, history and just made us feel special and welcomed. We will definitely be back next time we are in town.

Yelp
Amazing wine, great food, and friendly team. We both tried the flight of 5 for $25. The wine really had tremendous flavors. We ended up buying 6 bottles and they waived the tasting fees. Cannot wait to go back

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! Cute little house turned into a shop/tasting room. We became members on our first visit last Monday and will be going back today. Wonderful wines and free popcorn!

Yelp
This place is so great! I took the scenic route from Ft. Worth to San Antonio, and this was an impulse stop. You can't help but notice the cute little house with lovely outdoor seating and an airstream, parked out front. I was warmly greeted when I walked in and asked if I would like a tasting. Well yes ma'am, I would. They had a lovely selection of 6, to try. For $15, I thought that was a wonderful deal. The women were friendly and it was a great way to break up my trip and get out of the car for a bit. One of the reds was my favorite and I may just have to stop back by on my way home to pick up a bottle. They also have snacks and sandwiches and I bet when the weather is cooler, their outdoor space is the place to be.

Yelp
I adore this place! I am on a mission to try out as many Hill Country wineries as I can, and I found this with my Christmas Wine Affair Passport. It ended up being such a favorite that I joined their club! First, the setting is so much fun. Their main spot is in an old cottage, and they have turned it into part tasting room, part hang out, part shop, and it is oh so cute! Outside, they have a ton of tables, perfect for picnicking, and they have the lovely Airstream as well. But the wines! I loved everything I had here. I was a big fan especially of the Lady Bird, a drier white, and the Ramble On, a delicious red blend that is perfect with garlicky foods. (I bought some to go with Christmas dinner lasagna!) The wine is served by the friendliest staff. I am ready to go back again and again!

Cassidy R.

Yelp
Wine is phenomenal, atmosphere is 10/10 and you will find no better staff anywhere. Everything we needed was taken care of without having to ask! No better place in Johnson City or on 290 for that matter!

Yelp
This place is a sister house to our tasting room in brownfield Texas. It's like home away from home. The ambiance is like a warm blanket. The wine is exceptional and they offer charcuterie to snack on. I love it.

Denise U.

Yelp
Great wines and charcuterie boards. Lots of outdoor seating as well as cozy indoor space to relax.

Margaret B.

Yelp
The service was poor. We were virtually ignored after another group of three people arrived. Tastings are a bit pricey, you shouldn't feel that you've been shoved aside.
google avatar

Trey G.

Yelp
This winery would be great if the wines were more reasonable priced. The tasting price was good at 20.00. Now it would have been nice to be sent home with a souvenir glass. I only bought one to take home as this was the last stop in the way out. This is a great stop if you want a wine gift. Restroom very clean. Lots of parking out back.

Yelp
We came here for a wine tasting and booked the red room. The entire experience was lovely. They were very accommodating and let us change the tasting menu once we looked at what we had booked online. The charcuterie board was amazing and is an absolute must with the tasting as well. We can't wait to try the smok miroirs bottle we brought home!

Yelp
The last stop for the day brought us into the small but gorgeous tasting room location of Farmhouse Vineyards. Summer was our host and this gal is amazing! We had some rich talks on everything from wine making, agriculture, farm animal showings, to COVID matters. All while sipping some spectacular wine from start to end. I was so glad this was our last stop as we had no place to be after this. We must have hung out for well over an hour drinking and talking up a storm and I loved every minute of it! Besides my wine picks, I also got some of their coffee grounds for some Farmhouse java this week. Its super good! On the wine side...my top picks of the 10 (yep 10) we tasted was the Smok & Miroirs and Cultivated.

Yelp
Friendly and courteous staff; cute place; easy parking; good wines; decent sized pours; and reasonably priced for a tasting. I would have liked to purchase a few bottles, but the bottle price was too steep for my budget.

Sharyl S.

Yelp
We love the wine here! The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. We had a large charcuterie board and it was beautiful and so delicious, with some unique items that were great! Our favorite wine was Smoke & Mirrors. It is spelled differently on the bottle! We love to stop in here when we are passing through. The far house is so cute, great outdoor area too. They also sell many other items and we especially loved the pear jam. I highly recommend the Farmhouse Winery!

Yelp
The sangria, boyfriend, and Sweet were the best! 5 stars because of the wine quality. Server did not have much personality.Lots of separate rooms for CoVID protection. Will definitely return!

Yelp
Lots of parking! Cute boutique shopping. The restroom is clean. Service was awesome. Mostly dry reds. The family loved it though. Mom got a bottle of dessert wine that is not infused like a port.

Christine B.

Yelp
We have been meaning to stop by here to try their wines and finally did it. We were so impressed we immediately joined the wine club. Most of the wines are dry reds, which we love. The outside area is great for bringing a picnic, but we ordered off the menu and had a charcuterie tray which was out of this world. Barbara, who was running the tasting room, is also a chef so the charcuterie plate was very well curated. They also offer Panini's as well so if you go, plan on eating there and getting a bottle of wine to have with your food. Highly recommended.

Robin H.

Yelp
A must visit, kid friendly and a very courteous staff. Best of all amazing wine and live music. Tho they were having a event for wine club member they still entertained regular customer. We were also allowed to help ourselves with the food which was meant for the wine club member and my. Goodness was it good food . We had a bottle of Sangria which was amazing and the person who helped us was Summers she was very kind.

Yelp
Farmhouse Vineyards is a well known wine grower located in Brownfield, TX. Farmhouse is owned by a brother/sister team - the Seaton's & Furgeson's. They own four vineyards located at three different sites. They have provided grapes to many well known winemakers in the Hill Country for years. They use the unwanted remaining grapes to make some intriguing wines. They are the first Texas winery I am aware of that grow and make solid wines from a Greek wine varietal, Malvasia Blanca. They also make a great sparkling wine with this varietal. They started a tasting bar located in an airstream trailer in Johnson city known as the Tipsy Trailer, and quickly outgrew it. They just opened a brick and mortar in Johnson City and celebrated their second weekend open this past weekend. My friend and I were on our way home from our Fredericksburg wine weekend and noticed Farmhouse was still open. After several recommendations from my experienced wine friends, we had to stop and check them out. The tasting room is now located in a renovated home. When you enter, a quaint gift shop welcomes you, creating a farmhouse welcome. You walk through to a long narrow tasting room bar. We were warmly welcomed by a lovely tasting room associate. He walked us through the three different tasting flights - dry, rose, or sweet. Half way through the tasting the winemaker came over and stated chatting with us and walked us through how he made the wine and gave us the complete story. He also shared some of his labeled wine with us, which was very good. They had some tasty flavored popcorn to bite on between sips. Food will be coming in the future. We will definitely be back to experience the full tasting experience in the future. Since we didn't get to try all their wines I am keeping it at a four star. Will come back later to re-review after a full experience.

Yelp
We were quite surprised when we stopped at this winery. We learned of this winery on the wine trail, and the inside market is so super cute! We are not even white wine drinkers byte the wines we sampled were great (definitely not sweet drinKers, but we even went home with a dessert wine)! Everyone was so friendly and the owners were even there making sure people got home safely!!! 100% top notch stop and a must do on the wine trail!

Yelp
If you are a Texas Wine Lover and don't already know about Farmhouse Vineyards, shame on you! This is a farming family in Brownfield, Texas who has devoted a portion of the family farm to grape growing. They have a lovely tasting room in West Texas, but here locally in Central Texas, you can try their wines in Johnson City. The cute old house-turned-wine-tasting-room is a great spot to taste through the Farmhouse wines. It's cozy and they offer quite a few cute boutique shopping items in addition to their fabulous wines. Most days they offer fresh buttered popcorn...yes please! And the homemade bread packets are worth taking home. As for their wines, my personal faves are the Roussanne named 'Oh Hey, Charolais' and the blend called 'Jack Knife Reserve.' The Roussanne is a perfect fit for Chardonnay lovers, even though its not Chardonnay. The red blend called 'Jack Knifed' is a traditional GSM - Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, with oak aging to enhance the body. Summer is the tasting room manager here in JC and she will take great care of you. On a warm spring afternoon, you should definitely grab a glass and relax outside!

Yelp
Owners Nicholas and Katy Jane Seaton and Anthony and Traci Furgeson helped Farmhouse Vineyard realize its next natural step in its evolution, which is making wine! Their 122-acre vineyard is located near Brownfield in Texas High Plains AVA. With 16 plus varietals, it has been the grape source for many well-established Texas wineries that we have all come to know and love. We were fortunate to visit their "new-new" location in Johnson City at their house on highway 290. The previous location was at a trailer located near the 290 Vinery. The newest locale is right on Main street in a renovated classic home. Location, location, location is everything to a business and this place is spot on! The owners do have plans to relocate the trailer to this new site soon. Their expanded tasting menu consists of two flights, one has the full range of sparkling to dessert wines and the other focuses on dry Rosé, Whites, and Reds. As one of the first vineyards that helped establish Malvasia Bianca as a viable Texas grape, they have made a sparkling version called Boyfriend. The 2017 vintage has lemon grass and apricot notes that just "bubble" all over your palate. Their 2017 Revolution is a dry Rosé sparkling made from Counoise. With strong raspberry notes, it is crisp with a nice finish making this wine quite enjoyable on warm Texas days. For the 2017 Bloom Rosé, you get to enjoy a 100% Mourvedre Rosé that is light and refreshing with plenty of strawberry and melon notes. You will be in for a treat with their Marché. Made from a blend of Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Tempranillo, this Saignee style wine may be different than most Rosé's you've tried, but it is equally pleasing for the upcoming hot summer. There is a lovely red blend called, Ramble on which is a melding of Tempranillo, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. It is smooth and fruit forward and we believe most red wine lovers will readily enjoy. Wine tasting at Farmhouse, will also provide you with a rare opportunity and special treat! In their selection is one of Tim Drake's legendary wines called Assistant. This House of Drake greatness blends 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 9% Syrah sourced from Columbia Valley AVA in Washington. It is a superb dry red wine blend with a beautiful fruit finish that will leave you craving for more! Their semi-sweet dry white called Housewife is a Malvasia Bianca with nice melon and pear notes with just enough sweetness to boot. Lastly, you will get to enjoy their 2017 Sweet. This blend of Malvasia Bianca and Orange Muscat combines a bit of citrus and vanilla notes for something quite enjoyable and their sweetest dessert style wine. If you have visited the trailer before, now you have a new excuse to revisit and enjoy their expanded wine selection. The staff and owners are quite friendly and will make you feel very comfortable as they chat with you about the wines. We strongly encourage you to stop in and visit their new location and wish them well as they kick off this new phase in their journey.

Perry K.

Yelp
This place has so much Character! Clean, Welcoming, and the Customer Service is exceptional. Be greeted with a warm smile, friendly face, and knowledge about the history of Farmhouse Vineyards, the Fabulous WInes, and Unique Home Decor and Local Products makes this a great place to visit for locals and tourists alike. A real attribute to the historic town of Johnson City,TX. If your in the area you don't want to miss this amazing place!

Yelp
We were so excited to try out this winery today (Thursday). We called ahead but nobody answered so we showed up at 3:30, well within Thursday open hours and it was closed. It was not reflected on Facebook or online....extremely disappointed
