Faru

"Its name comes from an old English word for ‘journey’, but there is something decidedly contemporary about this city centre restaurant – from the airy, pared-back interior to the on-trend open kitchen and terse menu descriptions. An antique stained-glass window adds character and makes a fine backdrop for the chefs as they show their immense talent across colourful, precisely executed dishes that utilise punchy flavours like pickled walnut, mushroom ketchup and sweet carrot purée." - Michelin Inspector

I wanted to to try the tasting menu but we were only in Durham for the weekend so Sunday Lunch was our only option. Service was great and the staff were very knowledgable about wine and food options. My wife and I had a lovely roast beef dinner and other menu items. I had the cheese course which was lovely. I’d highly recommend this establishment as one to watch in the future.

Wow! What a fantastic place. A genuine 5 star dining experience in every way. From the food, service, wine and relaxed environment. Really great customer experience in terms of handling allergies too and nothing was too much trouble. A really exceptional team with no weak links. We've enjoyed several Michelin star restaurants, I'd say this is as good as if not better than some of them. Could not recommend enough. Thanks for an amazing meal and evening.

Second visit to this fantastic restaurant for a Sunday lunch. Excellent service and quality food. The option for some extras was worth it. The bread and salmon were delicious. A special mention for the mackerel, which was incredible. Great value for a gourmet Sunday meal. Original review from Jan 24..... At last, we made it for a Saturday lunchtime full menu. Food and service were exceptional. The menu was extremely well balanced, and each coarse was perfect. Allow about 2.5 hrs to enjoy. Highlights for me were the croustade, fish, beef, and the rhubarb. Very talented chef and team. The drink and wine menu was extremely reasonable for such a classy establishment. A 🌟 is surely in waiting. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Was it one of the best meals I've had in the UK? Yes. Was it the most well presented dinner I've had in the UK? Also yes 😀 It's what you'd expect from this level of a restaurant: just 10 tables, tinted windows, so you stare into the open kitchen (with some beautiful stained glass windows), where the chef puts every leaf on your dessert with tweezers. They offer 10 courses menu, but honestly, 5 courses is more than enough food, and you can always make it a 6 course with a cheese platter. The service is on the highest level, and the staff is happy to accommodate: we love wine, but don't drink much of it, so we split a single flight of accompanying wines, for example. Some expected "power moves" from the chef, like three different ways to prepare a cauliflower in a single dish were welcome. But for me the real highlight was the hazelnut dessert. It was so delicate I have no idea how it didn't crumble under its weight, and it looked like a piece of art. The place is not cheap, but well worth the price for the experience.

Superb! The Faru team are extremely talented across the board, with service and food second to none. It’s only a matter of time before they get a well deserved star. We have been three times now and will continue to go back. The service is welcoming and relaxed whilst the food gives 10/10 flavour from a seriously good Chef and kitchen team. Durham is lucky to have what is definitely a destination restaurant amongst its offerings. Highly recommend.

Excellent addition to the Durham high street: the food was outstanding, service attentive and we particularly enjoyed the wild garlic brioche and mushroom course. The tasting menu took us just under 3 hours from start to finish, and each dish is a small, but complex mixture of flavours and textures. The presentation of the dishes is beautiful and each is explained to you as it is served. The experience is more of an event rather than just a meal- highly recommended.

I was looking forward to trying Faru and it didn’t disappoint. We visited on a Saturday lunch time. The food was amazing, we had the wine pairing and it was excellent. The menu takes 2-3 hours to get through and every course was delicious. The kitchen is open plan and it’s great being able to watch your food being prepared. The service was also excellent and attentive. Will definitely go back again, definitely a place to go for a special occasion.

Took my wife along to Faru recently for her birthday as we both really enjoy treating ourselves to a little bit of fine dining. Faru is now up there with some of our favourites we have visited in the past. A very professional team greet you , make you welcome , are attentive without being over baring . This is a real skill and shows attention to detail . The atmosphere within the restaurant is calm and at no point do you feel out of place as some snobbery in fine dining is a real put off to us but Faru have the balance just right. The food the most important part in fine dining many would say. We chose the full tasting menu which takes your taste buds on an exciting journey invoking memories of your favourite flavours from times gone by and have been uplifted in modern ways. Excellent . Overall we absolutely loved our experience and have already been recommending to friends and family . Can't wait to return, thank you to everyone who made my wife's special day a memory she will treasure . See you again soon .
