10 Portland Restaurants Where You’ll Want To Become A Regular

"With its checkerboard floor, long counter with mounted stools, and tchotchkes covering the walls, Fat City Café is the textbook definition of a diner. This Multnomah Village institution, on the outskirts of Portland, is famous for its cinnamon rolls the size of a small child’s head. Head there for massive portions of pancakes, French toast, and omelets." - krista garcia

The Best Restaurants in Portland’s Charming Multnomah Village | Eater Portland

"Beloved diner Fat City has resided in a building once home to a grocery store and an ice cream parlor since 1976. With nearly every inch of the cafe’s walls plastered with vintage license plates from Oregon to Guam, there’s always something to catch your eye and spark a conversation while waiting for plates bearing three-egg omelets or the Towering Inferno (bacon-and-cheese scramble on top of hashbrowns) to hit your table. Don’t miss the cafe’s giant homemade cinnamon rolls, which are vegan." - Janey Wong

Service was so friendly. Short wait, but well worth it!! Full-on diner atmosphere, so cool!! Loved the food!! Classic hash browns, bacon was thick and krispy yet soft, cooked to perfection and so flavorful, great over-easy eggs, and the biggest, fluffiest blueberry pancake!! My wife had a great Phiily cheese and potato salad side. My son had the Cowboy as he loves his gravy. And my daughter-in-law had the Fat City Sizzle. Fabulous food! Highly recommend you try this place!!

Google
This place is fantastic—it truly feels like stepping back in time! The classic diner vibe is so charming, and the food absolutely lives up to it. I ordered an omelet with hash browns, and it was amazing—huge portions that definitely fill you up. The staff are really friendly and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the generous servings. The space is pretty small, so it’s not the best spot for big groups, but if you’re looking for an authentic, old-school diner experience, this place is definitely worth trying!

Google
Had a wonderful breakfast here. It's a cute, small diner with lots of fun license plates on the walls and other road-style decor. They have a fantastic menu selection with lots of options for vegans and vegetarians such as the Vegan Sizzle, Veggie Scramble, Florentine Eggs Benedict, etc. There is indoor and outdoor seating and street parking in the area. The food was very top quality and the service was outstanding from everyone who came by our table. I highly recommend this place!

Google
Great food and service. Nice small spot to hit for breakfast with great vibes and decor.

Google
Read the reviews and get it, this place has a cool vibe and friendly service, but the food was mediocre at best. I’m not a cook and could have made a better breakfast. The quality of the ingredients is not there. The test question for a restaurant is would I go back again for their food. Sad to say the answer is no.

Sean Welter

Google
The Benedict here is the worst I've tried in the Village. The staff is friendlier than most of the people in the Village but that doesn't help the case for the food. Marcos or Down to Earth have far better options for the same price. It is also a cramped and ugly little space with some bygone kitsch I just can't stand. Extra star for their efforts to let students study here after hours.

Google
Omg, I had the best buttermilk pancake here and you can order just one 🥞!! Also the beef hash was cooked to perfection, even when I had a bagel earlier, I was able to finish the whole dish. The waiter was super helpful and service was good. Would come here again just for the pancake!!!

So Great! We used to live in the neighborhood and have not been back for many years. Has not changed a bit. Still Old School Great! Best Blueberry Pancakes Ever.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast on a Friday morning and got seated right away. So glad we split the cinnamon roll! It's massive and amazing. The Fat City sizzle was good with perfectly cooked veggies (not raw and not mushy). The decor is fun and eclectic. We loved looking at the different states and countries that the license plates come from. This is not a place I would take a large group. It's not a very big restaurant and while they have some tables to could seat 6, it's really designed for parties of 2-4. Also strollers should not come inside. It's just not big enough to accommodate them and people.

Yelp
I'm glad they close at 2 pm. If they didn't I'd eat here constantly and get way too fat. They do breakfast and lunch. I always get breakfast because I'm of the opinion that breakfast is suitable for any meal. I've had the country benny-amazing mix of biscuits & gravy with eggs Benedict. I've also had the cinnamon roll French toast. Today was waffle with blueberries. If I were smart I'd eat half and save the rest for later because the portions are generous, but the food is so good it's easy to eat it all. The ambience is amazing! I love looking at all the quirky decorations and the humongous variety of license plates. We had the choice of inside or outside and while outside is lovely with the Multnomah Village shops it's a unique experience to sit inside. The servers tend to be busy but always are attentive and helpful. All in all, it's a great place to come for breakfast or lunch.

Yelp
Came in with 6 of us. Grandkids too. Seated right away. Cozy, nostalgic cafe. License plates lined the walls. Great menu. Had a omelette with spinach and sausage and blueberry pancakes. Hash browns were cooked perfect, not burnt or greasy. Omelette was put together nicely and the pancakes were big with lots of fruit. Server was very nice and checked up. Good bang for your buck too. We'll visit again. You Can't go wrong of There a map of the state as a placemat!

Yelp
We've been going here for years and its always a good time. I feel like Fat City is a real multnomah village institution. I got the irish benny. I would call it pretty typical diner food but in a good way. All they're walls are covered with old license plates and other fun signs. I always come back here once in a while and its always nostalgic. Would not recommend on weekend brunch times, incredibly busy. But if you can go on an off time, its very good.

Staci G.

Yelp
Either it is the end of an era of the huge cinnamon rolls this establishment is known for... OR it was just an off day because the size of the cinnamon roll I received today was basic. Had I known.. I wouldn't have driven so far for a basic sized cinnamon roll. I would've just stayed around town. I gave 2 stars since the taste and texture was on point but without the original Fat City Cafe size.. this is just an ordinary cinnamon roll.

Lidia B.

Yelp
Food was amazing . Gives you old Country vibes on a long road trip . Portions are good as well . It's family owned so you see the family helping take orders
google avatar

Maureen C.

Yelp
We had benny and a veggie omelet and cinnamon rolls. Service was wonderful as was the food!!
google avatar

Chuck B.

Yelp
We were told that the chicken fried steak was made in house, maybe in Cysco's house. Maybe in the house where it's fried in the same frier oil as the fish. Hashbrowns had no flavor. Disappointing pancakes, springy and rubbery. Best thing about the place was their music choices.
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
We wanted to try a local diner but was just ok. The coffee seemed watered down, fish-n-chips did not have much flavor (no malt vinegar). Their pancakes/French toast was bland. I was quite surprised at this recommendation. We gave it a shot but will not be returning especially with all other dining options in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
My experience at Fat City Cafe was quite disappointing. I ordered the Irish Benny (eggs benedict with corned beef), which was far from satisfying. The poached egg was overcooked with a solid yolk, and the corned beef was no doubt from a can, tasteless with a mushy texture. Considering the price, it definitely did not live up to expectations. My girlfriend ordered the Farmer's Sizzle which was decent, though the biscuit was very underdone. Moreover, the service was lacking, the owner Hellen was our waitress and didn't check in on us throughout our meal, plopping a check on the table as soon as we received our food. Would not recommend this place and would warn to steer clear of any of their benedicts.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Super cute feel-good diner with great atmosphere and vibes. Decor is very unique and fun. Keep in mind cash only!! Food- very mediocre, lacked any type of flavor and everything soaked in grease. Cinnamon roll was probably the best thing we got at the table. Fun place but food is not good and overpriced.
google avatar

Darren Y.

Yelp
Good greasy spoon. Cool decor with license plates everywhere. Got the Turkey club and the Benny. Both were great. Why the 3 stars? They charge 2 bucks for a mug of hot water.
google avatar

Fiona K.

Yelp
Adding this to my list of old school, greasy spoon diners! We dropped by around 10 on a weekday so we were seated immediately, but could see this place filling up quickly on the weekends as there aren't a ton of seats. We ordered the Regular Joe Breakfast and the Farmer's Sizzle and both were great. Prices are about what you'd expect nowadays ($15+), so not a screaming deal but still worth it I think if you're in the area!
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
Parking in the area is tough and they won't seat you if your entire party isn't present. The host accused us of lying about our last person parking the car. Long time customers that will never return.
google avatar

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE this spot! Super super cute spot Highly recommend to eat there, Amazing use of space , a lot to look at and the food is yummmyyy!!!

Yelp
Great food, fun decor and the service was superb! Small, cozy, hometown feel, added to the ambiance! :)

Yelp
Had a great breakfast at Fat City Cafe. It was packed but the service was great and the meal was delivered hot and quick. Love the local look of the place with school ids under glass and License plates on the wall.

Pdx L.

Yelp
Fat City is a quintessential greasy spoon diner. It is beloved be the neighborhood, the owner would win a bid for Mayor if she ran. The food is diner food, the ambiance is fantastic, strangers can share a joke or two... We love Fat City!

Cathy N.

Yelp
Breakfast is always fun, but don't miss out on lunch! This place has great food, great service and is definitely a fun place to eat!

Mackenna A.

Yelp
Love the people and the vibes here, the cinnamon roll French toast is one of the most heavenly things I have ever eaten I would recommend it to anyone!

Nick B.

Yelp
YES YES YES! The epitome of classic delicious, family owner American diner! Absolutely love it! Great breakfast, amazing. Thank you!
google avatar

Elisabeth A.

Yelp
Eh. I was excited to eat here as we've passed by many times and it's always packed. My family of 5 dined in for lunch and we were sadly disappointed. Service was sparse and the food was just okay. I love the eclectic atmosphere but the rest was not ideal. We likely won't be back.
google avatar

Gina K.

Yelp
I am a sucker for a classic diner, they are becoming a lost art in this busy world! It was clear when we entered that this is a family establishment. The hostess and our waiter seem to be related. They were quick to take out order snd deliver us food. Food came out quickly and was piping hot. We got a cinnamon roll which is literally as large as the head of a small child. I ordered the hash with cheese, ham, onions, green peppers and two eggs over easy on top. I was full for most of day, eating only a light snack in the afternoon. If your looking for a friendly, good ole diner atmosphere and delicious food, look no further than Fat City Cafe!

Jonathan T.

Yelp
Not fancy but darned if this iconic Mutnomah Village diner doesn't have a permanent place in our hearts. You could come for lunch but why bother? You want breakfast. Big, hot, plate-filled, greasy, divine breakfast. (Biscuits and gravy, or Queen Cakes.) You may occasionally have some eggs that are a tad rubbery or toast that's a little dark; it will be remedied. Service is warm and friendly; ambience--if you're not snobby--is abundant.

Yelp
I hate fat city café they way long to get us our food. They stop coffee early and you can't get any refills or coffee. after a certain time which is really early and they mistake my order for someone else's
google avatar

T Y.

Yelp
Food was decent and the experience was overall okay. Nothing entirely special from any other cafe, based on what I ordered at least (Farmer's Sizzle). This place seemed promising based upon some of the previous reviews. Service was mediocre since our table was not checked up on. The cleanliness of the cafe is questionable with sticky tables and odors that are not a result from food. The space is tiny and tables are close to each other. Not great for anyone who needs their space while eating.

Yelp
What a treat!!! We were out for a Christmas shopping meal and stopped here on a quest for good food!!! From the moment we sat down to the time we left our coffee cups were filled with nice, warm coffee. Hubby and I split an original Eggs Benny with hash browns and our Sr guest ordered the "Geezer Special"...it made her day when she was asked to show her ID for age verification. Ordering a cinnamon roll to share is an obligatory must!!! Great food and great atmosphere. The entire ceiling is covered with garland and lights. I guarantee that you will feel MERRY after dining here!!! Merry Christmas indeed!

Perry H.

Yelp
Fat City is Fat City, Helen is Helen (and we love them both), deal with it! Been a customer there since 2001, both my kids learned about work ethic there and one has his creation still on the menu (Fancy Pants). They get the occasional crank who comes from somewhere else and doesn't bother to get it - too bad for them.

Brittany T.

Yelp
fat city has my heart LOVE this area bc after breakfast you can go to the cutest shops. multnomah is so beautiful too. anyway, back to the food, BIIIG portions here i love it. the gravy was okay, not my favorite but still a 10/10 breakfast overall. service was impeccable as always - they're the sweetest

Barclay B.

Yelp
Cinnamon rolls are fantastic. The rest of the meal was ordinary. I would still go back.

Johnathan L.

Yelp
Went early on a Sunday for breakfast. Friendly staff. Good food. Good coffee. Gotta get the cinnamon roll. Awesome small town diner vibes. Would recommend.

Cheryl L.

Yelp
Visiting from New Orleans (the food capitol of the U.S. in my humble opinion), I can't say enough good things about this quaint, unassuming cafe. The service was great! Everyone was so friendly! I got the tuna melt. Pretty basic, right??? But man, it was one of the best tuna melts I have ever had! And the potato salad was delicious as well. It was so fun to sit there eating and looking at all the funny license plates which cover the walls. The entire area where this cafe is located is fun and inviting! I would love to spend an entire day at least once a week hanging out. Cheryl E

Yelp
This place used to be good, at least I think it was when I was younger. I've had better meals at Dennys and Shari's both, that's pretty sad. Food was overpriced and small portions. The older woman with glasses was not good at her job, brought us the wrong food twice and never offered us water. As much as I love disco music it has its place, not in a diner at 10am on a Sunday morning, some of us are hungover. Also when did basic omelette's become $17
google avatar

Annika P.

Yelp
We came here with friends that have been coming here for years, and we were not disappointed. The staff were all so friendly, the service was pretty quick, and the food was delicious. Nothing fancy here, just good breakfast food. Two of our group had the Fat City Sizzle and I got the Fat City Omelet. Everything was really good, and we're looking forward to going back soon.
google avatar

Kerrie D.

Yelp
Awesome local diner. My daughter and I snagged a comfy table outside. The staff was super nice and the interior of this place looks adorable (someday...). I got the Denver omelette with a pancake for lunch and didn't even realize it came with crispy and perfectly cooked hash browns until it showed up. Coffee was strong and kept coming. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Madeline M.

Yelp
Fun ambience, great location, and very friendly service, but the food was served cold and was not well cooked. Will not be back.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Hellooooooo Daddy, this is what old school diners are all about. Lot's off cool stuff on the wall for decor, huge portions, friendly staff, and all of the breakfast and lunch diner favorites you want. I had the Fat City Sizzle and HUGE cinnamon roll. Both were amazing and I needed a nap after. So happy to still come across something like this. Especially in Multnomah village out of all the places. Looking forward to more visits her.

Michael A.

Yelp
Just okay. Food was middle of the road. Serve staff were friendly but not paying attention to the spray shake mixer gone wild. Had to be prompted by customer at nearby table. Speaks volumes about ambiance.
google avatar

Mason B.

Yelp
This is a spectacularly kitschy breakfast spot with great food, a fun environment and delightful staff. My partner and I ate here the other day and had a great experience. I had the Fancy Pantz breakfast and everything was cooked to perfection. My boyfriend had the regular Benny and absolutely loved it. They also did a great job with COVID precautions. Indoor and outdoor dining were available and both had social distancing measures in place. All of the staff were wearing masks and the restaurant was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Even the itty bitty bathroom was tidy and clean. Great experience and great restaurant!

Leslie T.

Yelp
Phew this place is pricey. $3.50 for an egg, $6 for a cinnamon roll. It wasn't bad, staff was friendly, but it sure is pricey.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
Fat City Cafe has HUGE portions... of attitude and rudeness. Don't bother with this place. The food isn't worth dealing with the staff, not to mention the trouble of finding an ATM. Yes, that's right: this place is still cash-only. We tried to eat at Fat City this morning and were treated very poorly and unequally. A party that had five of seven total members was seated before us. Our turn came up and two of our party were also not present yet, but we were told that it was their policy that our full party must be present before being seated. Granted, it was a different server who told us this, and he claimed ignorance when we informed him of the policy violation with the party ahead of us. While we were waiting the remaining members of the party of seven arrived and were seated. Turns out the server was friends with some of this party. When our party was all present and accounted for, one of us went in to let them know and before he could say a word he was told rather abruptly to wait outside by the server who sat the other party. She later came out to tell us that although we were next, she couldn't seat our party of four, and so we would have to continue waiting while she let others in ahead of us. Not a good experience. We will not be returning. We went across the street to Renner's and had a much better experience from the start. So don't waste your time. Don't pay ATM fees. Go somewhere else.

Kevin Z.

Yelp
Klassic kitsch decor. Excellent breakfast. I had country Benny with delicious sausage gravy. Looking forward to a repeat visit

Kent S.

Yelp
Fat City is a great place for a casual breakfast with plenty of options from which to pick. The decor is definitely Portland, service is friendly, and prices are reasonable. And this place has history; among which Mayor Bud Clark fired the police chief over breakfast. The place is often very busy so best to plan on a late breakfast or a patient wait.

Jordan A.

Yelp
Hostess was so rude we had to leave. Told us to leave a table we were sat at because our 4th person was parking. So loud and crowded. Nowhere to wait, so I was holding the door open for guests coming and going and was yelled at for doing so.
google avatar

Liz T.

Yelp
Sign says it all, Cash Only hole in the wall. Direct quote "I guess I shoulda filled that up" a glass goes empty as the clock ticks down to closing time. No one would ever think a place with Cafe in the name wouldn't serve you coffee even if "it's past the time we brew coffee", and a menu that say "serves breakfast all day".
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
I love this little cafe I always come back to visit every year they have fantastic fresh homemade food no matter what! They always make your food fresh it's never sitting in some tray like at McDonald's you cannot get homemade food like this in the city that often. Don't hesitate to stop here for some breakfast

Tanya B.

Yelp
I've been a customer of fat city over 5 years. I just went there today and ordered $50 dollars worth of bullshit!! The "real chicken breast nuggets " are frozen Dino nuggets and the fish and chips are little frozen pieces from your neighborhood grocery store!! They've raised prices and cut the quality of their food! It's sad and I will never spend my cash with this cafe again!!!! Sorry, not sorry. Signed, a Disappointed Customer
google avatar

Alison B.

Yelp
Not normally/ever in Multnomah Village but extraordinary circumstance had us come here. Fat City Café was very inviting. There was a nice outside covered area. The food was decent dinner fair but pretty decent. The service was good. The main annoying thing was that it's currently cash only but they do have signs and they let us know right away too. Highly recommend if you find yourself unexpectedly in Multnomah Village for breakfast.

Jim J.

Yelp
This makes me sad to write. I used to come to this place for years, that's why i'm giving it an extra star. I was pretty disappointed that this was not the same restaurant I once knew and loved. Food is extremely overpriced, portions are laughably small, and it's bland as hell. Oh yea, and it's cash-only... Such a shame it's gone so downhill. At least the staff has always been friendly. Wont be coming back for a very long time.
