The 8 Best Restaurants on Governors Island

"It’s all about the jerk chicken at this halal Jamaican vendor, which started as a food truck in the Bronx in 1994. You can get it on a platter, but we prefer it in a gyro with a creamy and tangy white sauce. Like most things here, the chicken isn’t that spicy, so ask for their house hot sauce. There’s a good chance the wait at La Newyorkina is long, so Fauzia’s fresh lemonades and snow cones are good backups for a cold treat. " - will hartman, kenny yang

Google
My dad was raving about this food truck and it smelt great when I went to wait in live. But sadly the jerk chicken portion was so small i ate it in three bites. I understand the popularity of this place and maybe they are rationing the food but im very disappointed.

Google
Top 5 best chicken experiences of my life. I wasn't brave enough to try the jerk chicken because I know Jamaicans are serious about their spice and I'm weak when it comes to spicy food, but I DID get their grilled chicken and it was immaculate. Juicy, tender, flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and not so salty you need to spoon the rice and salad into your mouth after every bite, like you have to do with food that's well seasoned but overwhelming. I could eat a bucket of the chicken straight up. I also had the rice and peas, which were also delicious and well seasoned, flavorful but not overwhelming, and the platter comes with 2 sides so you can get a side salad/veggies too, which I got, but I think I might've accidentally opted out of salad dressing lol. Even though the rice and peas and the chicken were both flavorful, they still went together really well and never became too salty together or individually, which is kinda common with really flavorful delicious food. Super well balanced and delicious lunch, more than enough food for a meal and a good price for it, even with the add-ons I got (carrot cake and passionfruit lemonade) it was still only like 20 bucks, so not bad considering how much there was, the variety of the food, and the quality. There's usually a line for lunch so definitely try to get there early if you have somewhere to be, still, I don't think I waited more than 15 minutes. I WILL be coming back and I'd reccomend it to anyone, including the vegans and the health nuts since they have a great variety of vegan proteins and vegetables, and the food is very nutritionally balanced while not skimping out on flavor. This isnt to say its good for "healthy" food, it's good PERIOD, I personally would still eat the hell out of this even if it was very "unhealthy".

Google
First time trying this place. Visiting NY Today was slightly rainy and cloudy. When I arrived the line was already 7 or 8 people long IN THE RAIN. A woman who I assume is the owner approached me waiting in line and took my order. I tried the jerk chicken Rice and beans And cabbage The chicken was so tender and flavorful. The rice was seasoned perfectly. The cabbage was slightly sweet in a good way and complimented the meal perfectly. The cake was amazing! Definitely recommend trying the food here. I will go back as much as I can before leaving NY. B+ I tried the jerk chicken 10/10/2024 I Don't know what went wrong. The chicken is a small bit of shredded chicken. The food is overly salted. Very very salty. Not worth the 11$ I spent. Please revise the recipe. Until then I will not be returning.

Google
If you work in or around the Bronx courthouses, this is where you should be eating. There's really nothing else that compares in terms of quality, value, and service. Great food, great people, and a great big line; for a reason! I recommend: the menu in its entirety.

Google
First time that I have ever heard of the jerk chicken gyro ! Talk about a Jamaican fusion ! After they told me what kind of food they sold, I understood what they meant by Jamaican fusion after I ate the food. The jerk chicken was so succulent that I could not stop licking my fingers. The customer service was exceptional and they even have their own signature jerk seasoning bottled to go! It was truly great and a must have experience coming to New York City! P.S. By far the best food I have ever eaten from a food truck. I didn't know such quality can come from a food truck!

Google
This family served me some of the best chicken I have ever had at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. When a customer changed their mind on an order, I bought her jerk chicken gyro from the nice gentleman at the counter and selfishly asked if he could throw me some of the curry chicken for taking it off his hands. He obliged with more than I expected (one tiny piece would have been enough just to get a taste; or maybe not because I would have gone back for another gyro after learning how good it was!). This is all to say, that not only is the food incredible, but the service was superb. I am all to excited to learn that they are located right by BECA where my partner works, I will have to meet her for lunch whenever I can!

Google
The jerk chicken Gyro is awesome! Spicy, but awesome! Service is slow, but I didn't mind waiting. I thoroughly recommend!

Yelp
A neighborhood favorite. I've gotten food here on numerous occasions. There's often a line during the lunch hour, so I would suggest coming just be for 1 pm or after 2 pm. The food is always good. I tend to stick to the chicken options with rice and peas and veggies.

Yelp
We had the privilege to meet this wonderful family on Governor Island. They offer a great selection for all pallets. Did I mention it's halal, extra plus. You can tell this homemade meal is made with love. We had the jerk chicken platter and a curry chicken platter with rice/peas and cabbage (white sauce/jerk chicken sauce) and a freshly squeezed pineapple juice. This was delicious and fulfilling, the portions are great. There is seating nearby and the view is amazing. They were a variety of food trucks but this one offer hospitality and a home cooked meal, which added to our trip to GI.

Yelp
This food truck comes to Columbia on Wednesdays and it's the highlight of my work week. The food is always on point. So damn good! I recommend it to everyone looking for a good meal around here.

Yelp
This place is just beyond. I first discovered them on Governor's Island and was just blown away by the vegan chicken, vegetables, rice and beans, and fresh coconut. I'm so happy to learn they're now in Harlem. I went today and in addition to the vegan chicken really enjoyed the lentil stew! I'm looking forward to trying other menu items like their black bean soup, other vegan meats, and the gyro. The family who owns the business (and does all the cooking, etc.) are so warm and friendly and so accommodating. I love that it's owned by such a wonderful family who wants to get to know their customers, and It's just lovely to be able to walk over there and get such amazing, hearty, and healthy food. What an amazing find!

Yelp
This is for Governor's Island. We got the rice platter, which you actually don't need to get rice (you get to choose 2 sides). We opted for jerk chicken + green salad + steamed cabbage, and got white sauce on top of everything. The chicken was good and tender, and the cabbage was nicely seasoned - think I may have enjoyed it even more than the chicken. It came to about ~$17 I think, so that's the knock to 4 stars, but the stands on the island probably all have some price inflation.

Yelp
Best food I ever eaten off of a food truck. You know the food is good when people are on line patiently waiting to order. This truck is around dozens of other restaurants and food trucks. So you have a variety of selections but people choose to stand and wait for her food. That says alot so far. So I order curry chicken, yellow rice and cabbage with mix veggies. I really loved that she made this without me having to worry about if any bones are gonna hurt my teeth or would I be sitting around people spitting out bones, I mean I had to get this for lunch to go because I was doing jury duty, so I had to eat my lunch in an lounge room with random jurors, because this is after all a food truck that Im buying from, not a restaurant. Her food was nice and hot, favorable, and like I said boneless. If im in the area again I would buy some to take home If your in that area pick something up from her, the price was right and the food is sure to please you.

Yelp
***Governor's Island outpost review*** Hot summer day on the island, this particular food stand only had a moderate line as well as refreshing drinks and enticing food to boot. Started off with the coconut kiosk from the man with a machete. Each coconut is priced based on size; got a couple of $5 ones that had a moderate amount of juice in it. Plus side is that he cuts open the shell after you're finished so you can eat the filling inside (delicious). For the main course, ordered the jerk chicken on pita bread with mixed veggie toppings and hot sauce ($7). Jerk chicken is SUPER juicy, bursting with flavor that complimented very well by the marinated veggies. Pita is soft, so it didn't last too long trying to hold all the ingredients together, but altogether amazing bite. Line moves here pretty well and the guys are all nice despite the crowds/heat. They also sell fresh-pressed juices that looked good as well.

Yelp
My boyfriend heard about this place on YouTube. We came all the way from queens to try it out. He got the grilled chicken with seasoned rice and a veggie side with white sauce. I got the curry chicken with seasoned rice and plantain and carrot cake for desert. BOYFRIEND REVIEW: I thought it was pretty good, the food was great, carrot cake was amazing but only change I would recommend would be to up the portion size. They have 3 different sizes you can choose from, S, M and L. I ended up getting a medium, which came out to $8. Overall, 4/5 for me. Would have given it a 5/5 if they gave a better portion. GIRLFRIEND REVIEW: My curry chicken with rice was okay. My favorite thing about it was that it was boneless. The flavor could've been better though. The plantains were made fresh, but they were also burnt. The portion sizes could definitely be better, the medium plate is like a small plate at an average Jamaican restaurant. The carrot cake was the best carrot cake I've had. They give a big slice and it's nice and moist. Overall I would give it a 3.5/5. If we're ever in that area, we would go again but wouldn't drive out the way for it.

Yelp
We are so lucky that we got Fauzia's food track in the area! Everything is very delicious and not pricey.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
It's important to keep in mind this review is written amidst the pandemic. Businesses have been struggling all over, especially those that operated primarily for dine-in. That being said, Fauzia took her food via food truck and is stationed on the sidewalk at 131st & Broadway. They have select items on specific days (i.e. Lamb on Thursday, Fish on Wednesday, Goodness on Everyday). I have had the Jerk Chicken, the Fish, the Lamb, collard greens, yams broccoli corn, potato and cabbage, rice and peas (beans), their hot hot sauce and their white sauce...all of it amazing. The mother and daughter occasionally work together and are very sweet, soft spoken, and help you decide if you're unsure. I don't live here, and my meals are covered, but I have a hard time venturing off to eat elsewhere when their food is readily accessible and delicious. Prices are more than reasonable for a good lunch or meal for a dinner to-go. I recommend this place and I urge you to write your review as well.

Yelp
This is a review of the Governor's Island outpost. I first went to Fauzia's food truck on Governors Island wayyy back in 2013 and was so impressed--it was tasty, good quality and a lot of food. It left such an impression that five years later, I was hoping to find it again and glad to see it had expanded. But this experience was disappointing. The food still tastes good but my family felt shortchanged on the amount of food they got for the price ($12, curry chicken platter). I got a veggie gyro so I was fine but I have to say, looking at their food, I felt disappointed for them too. I know vendors have back-end costs but my guests did not feel they got their money's worth (compared to what you'd get for $12 at most Caribbean spots).

Yelp
Fauzia Heavenly Delights NY Bronx Grand Concourse 12pm Wednesday 12th 2014 Four Stars This food stand is always crowded at the 1pm lunch break. I got out early so I tried this Caribbean food truck. I had a jerk chicken gyro which was an odd combo but everything was delicious. The chicken had plenty of flavor. The pita, lettuce, tomato, and sauce made for an easy $5 Meal.
google avatar

Ryna D.

Yelp
Fauzia is practically a godsend when I think about the quality food options in my work neighborhood. She makes really delicious West Indian stews, curries, jerk chicken, and even vegetarian options. And she always have a great selection of yummy vegetable sides. Occasionally she'll have roti or falafels as well. My favorites are her grilled lamb, curry chicken, yams and lentils and of course, her banana pudding. Go before 1pm to avoid the lines.
google avatar

Ericka B.

Yelp
I don't want to talk about the banana pudding. Suffice it to say Grandmas everywhere will not be happy about how good this was!

Yelp
(Open daily for lunch, arrive on the early side) For such a lofty name, the actual food cart on this busy downtown Bronx corner might disappoint some, as it does nothing to set itself apart visually from others on any street throughout the city. But get close, read the hand-written menu, and taste the food, and "heavenly" will suddenly come into focus. Arrive no later than 1pm at this popular cart, for the meat dishes start running out, and everything is of limited supply. On my latest visit, the three meat entrees were crossed off the list (at exactly 2pm), and I decided to sample just the lentils and spinach ($3). The vegetables are delicious, spiced in a way that conjures up a jerk sauce. One meat entree and this or another vegetable side is definitely enough for two people to fill their bellies. Fauzia herself (I'm assuming that is her name) is a charming character, never without a smile and eager to recommend or help despite any lines forming behind you. I'm sure she also brings smiles to the faces of many people who work in the area and have such a great street vendor option.
google avatar

Patty L.

Yelp
Vendy Award Finalist - I had to try. Fauzia's kids are worth mentioning as seeing them pitch in and graciously help the long line of hungry customer's on a summer weekend, those are some great kids! But on to the food. I visited their cart on Governor's Island and compared to the other vendors, Fauzia had the best value menu. For a large entree with two sides, the price is $10 + tax and the portion size was enough for 2. We asked the daughter for the jerk chicken and to select the sides and sauces for us. She was excited to prep our platter of jerk chicken over rice and mixed vegetables. The chicken was tender and seasoned really well. I wish the platter came with more! I would guess there was about 10oz of chicken to the entree but there was plenty of rice and veggies. I also got her famous spiced carrot cake for $3.50 a slice. It was moist and the frosting was sugary sweet - the perfect way to end our meal.
google avatar

Paul A.

Yelp
Very impressed. Such amazing flavor packed into this food, your taste buds will thank you. Quick friendly service, fair pricing, and dishes that are clearly made with much care -- the jerk chicken was so satisfying.
google avatar

Bo B.

Yelp
I do not usually order food from food stands because they sort of creep me out. My co-workers from Bronx Family Court all rave about this food stand. They convinced me to try it out. There is always a line to buy her food. Once I actually waited 20 minutes on line to get her food. Today I ordered the jerk chicken, rice and peas, sauteed cabbage. It was really delicious. The chicken was so tender, bonless and peppery. The rice and peas perfectly cooked. You can't have jerk chicken without rice and peas. And the sauteed cabbage was nice and spicy. Their lunch selections change everyday. She gets her produce from a farmer's market. Her husband makes a killer dessert made with vanilla wafers, pudding, fresh bananas and cool whip.
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Definitely heavenly. I've had the jerk chicken, curry chicken, lamb, rice and cabbage (not all at once but it's good enough that I'd consider it). The food is reasonably priced, like 6ish for a rice platter. I also like that they have pepper sauce instead of plain red hot sauce like you buy at the grocery store. The lines are problematic for sure, get there before 1 and you should be ok. On certain days Fauzia's son works alone with a smaller chicken and rice-looking cart, but he still has jerk chicken and cabbage. A lot of times, there's less of a crowd on these days, and you can still have something different from the usual chicken and rice.
google avatar

Kat C.

Yelp
We experienced tasty food from the food truck on Governor's Island. It was a very generous portion and the food was cooked to perfection. The lady who owns this operations son was serving and we all found him so well mannered and engaging. All round pleasure.
google avatar

Trace M.

Yelp
The last two times I've been, they weren't there :(!!!! Somebody tell me what's going on. I miss Fauzia's amazingly delicious and healthy food. Her banana puddiing is delish too! Wish she'd open a real storefront in a convenient location.
google avatar

Arielle R.

Yelp
Two words: Jerk Chicken I was doing a summer internship in the Bronx and stumbled upon this little street cart one afternoon. It's very small and unassuming (it looks pretty much like every other street cart you'd ever see dotting NYC streets). However, do not be fooled. This place is indeed heavenly. The lines can be pretty long, but on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (jerk chicken days) it's totally worth it. They serve curry chicken on Tuesday and Thursday, and unfortunately I'm not as big a fan of that dish. They also have really good banana pudding. Their vegetarian options vary daily, but since I am a carnivore, I can't vouch for those. This little cart is definitely worth checking out if you're ever in the area!
google avatar

Joey V.

Yelp
I'm wondering if this place has gone a little Hollywood following their media coverage. $8.50 for a medium "grilled lamb" there was nothing grilled about it. They offer the standard white sauce or hot sauce which I didn't expect.
google avatar

Friedrich E.

Yelp
The Jamaican version of Chicken & Rice. The best bang for your book. Finger lickin' good. Worth every cent and more. You gotta try it.
google avatar

Larry L.

Yelp
Luckily for me, I did not have to travel up to 161st Street to taste Fauzia's home-made Jamaican food. She took her entire cart down to 42nd and Vanderbilt for the Earth Day Fair in April. I saw the news article on Midtown Lunch and I knew I had to try them. I ordered the curry chicken and it was very salty. The flavors can fairly be described as bold, but extremely strong. The curry chicken was salty to the point I couldn't even finish my meal, which is an extremely rare occurrence. I tried to wash away the saltiness with my sorrel, but unfortunately it was frozen, so that wasn't much help for most of my meal.
google avatar

Liz A.

Yelp
Hands-down THE best lunch I've had since I began working in the Bronx 3 months ago. For $5 I ordered the jerk chicken gyro with white and hot sauce, and today is the first time in a long time that I still felt satisfied as I packed up to leave work at 5pm. Served on a fluffy, fresh pita, the jerk chicken itself, though not "spicy" per se (IMO, at least), packed a delicious punch of heat, which was offset by a refreshingly cool blend of diced tomato and cucumber. Overall impression: Worth the wait! The juicy sandwich ALMOST turned into a fork and knife affair, but as long as you plan on sitting down to eat it, it's well worth the effort.
google avatar

Melo L.

Yelp
I've tried a variety of their dishes and I love it! The chicken here is really good. I've tried their jerk chicken (it's spicy) small plate with rice and mixed veggies, the lamb gyro and also the grilled chicken gyro. I've tried the carrot cake and the ginger tea.
google avatar

Luz M.

Yelp
I had the Jerk Chicken Gyro and a Ginger Tea. This was the best part of Jury Duty. The Jerk Chicken Gyro was just spicy enough, it wasn't overpowering spicy but it just enough to give it a good flavor.
google avatar

Diego S.

Yelp
Attitude is served with the food. I've been eating on and off at Fauzia's for many years and the food has always been decent. The trouble is, the attitude of both the owner and her daughter leave much to be desired. To get a smile or a nice disposition from either of them is a nearly impossible task. Today, I discovered a side dish they were offering which I hadn't previously eaten. I asked for half of that side and half of steamed cabbage. The daughter, with her usual scowl, said "we don't normally do that." At a food cart? Really? This is NOT FINE DINING. Would it have killed her to give me one scoop of one side and one scoop of the other? Obviously, considering the chilly reception I got, it would have. Fauzia, may I suggest you and your kin perhaps have a warmer welcome, which is traditionally in true Caribbean style! It won't kill you, I promise. Also, their curry chicken was on the dry side today. I probably won't return.
google avatar

Larisa T.

Yelp
I tried the food here on Governor's Island. I think it's the same thing, unless she has a branch. Be prepared to wait in line. Also be prepared for soulful Jamaican grub. For $8, I got jerk chicken, rice with beans, and cabbage. Everything tasted like it was made with love. The chicken falls apart at the touch of your plastic fork. The cabbage has a lot of other vegetables in it, so you feel like you're being somewhat healthful. After riding our rented bikes for 2 hours, Fauzia's Heavenly Delights hit the spot.
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
This is actually a review of the Fauzia's truck that was stationed on Governor's Island 7/13/13. Both of us each got a jerk chicken platter. We both agreed that it was delicious. And it was huge! We definitely could have split one, even with us both being starving. This is a Governor's Island best value. The day I was there, there was a long line at Le Gamin food stand at Paradiso but no line at this truck. Very pleased with my choice.
google avatar

Sacha-Avi S.

Yelp
Wow HELLO. So I've never had Caribbean food before in my life and this was the best intro possible. I've been friends with fauzia's daughter since college and I've been determined to support their business while simultaneously trying Jamaican food for the first time. I was finally in the Bronx (hottest day ever) but I ordered the jerk chicken, rice and beans, and the lentil/spinach/mushroom purée (insert heart eye emoji). Not only was I starving when I bought lunch but it smelled DELICIOUS. So much so that I ate it both on the D train platform and on the train. The flavors and textures all felt like comfort food, well seasoned with just enough punch to continually sip water. I'm very excited to 1. Try more Caribbean food and 2. Try more of fauzia's food most importantly. Looking forward to trying more at governors island (less of a trek than the Bronx) but if I AM in the Bronx court district- I know where to get lunch (while hopefully not falling into a blissful food coma at work)
google avatar

Scott J.

Yelp
Best lamb ever, amazing jerk, curry and grilled chicken. Amazing owners, very friendly and helpful. Carrot cake and Red Velvet cake are out of this world. This is such a gem in the Bronx. It's a good stand, wish they had an actual shop with tables.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
Grilled lamb, cabbage, yam, yum! Service with a smile and a laugh. Got the large size, she doesn't stint on the meat, veggies, whatever you ask for. I love that she doesn't force you to take rice with your order like similar carts can sometimes do. Very much recommended.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Had the jerk chicken w rice and beans and yellow split pea and mushroom - $8 for a medium plate. Twas enough food but I didn't feel like it was all that amazing. The jerk chicken was a bit too clove-y for me and not very saucy at all albeit tender and juicy. The yellow split pea and mushroom was pretty good and the rice and beans were meh...

Matt K.

Yelp
I got the curry chicken, which is the special on Tuesday and Thursday. It was out of this world. Definitely coming back on the alternate days to try her jerk chicken. This was a bright spot in my otherwise boring day of jury duty.

G B.

Yelp
It's a gamble whether they're there any particular day (there being 161 about 6 blocks from the D train). Food is tasty, halal if that matters to you, and greasy as can be.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Amazing food truck also on 161street in the Bronx. She has delicious vegetarian options daily, which is rare in the area and super appreciated!

Shane C.

Yelp
On Thursday she serves roti, and it's closer to Dol Pouri (which ground chick pea in it). That and the curry reminds me of what I grew up on. So nice to have access to such delicious food right around the corner. Even the grilled chicken was moist and delicious.

Meredith H.

Yelp
I finally just tried Fauzia's and am so angry that I waited so long to do so. It is amazing. I've passed it a million times because I didn't want to wait in the line that is always there at lunch time. Now I know it's worth the wait.

Tom G.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood but don't work here, so am only able to visit Fauzia when I have a day off during the week. The meat dishes and sides are all outstanding. My wife is a vegetarian and loves all the options available too. I would eat here every day if I could.
