Where to Buy Mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival in NYC | Eater NY

"In 1991, Taiwanese founder Han Chou opened in Manhattan, eventually expanding to over 10 locations from Flushing to Maspeth. He has continued to turn out pastry favorites like curry beef puffs and sesame balls. Now, Fay Da is selling an assortment of mooncakes: Large and mini sets include durian lava, white lotus seed and egg yolk, jujube and walnut. They can be shipped nationwide." - Caroline Shin

My sister and I have been to this place and that both of us got chicken buns and that the buns were wonderful and tasty. The food and service were wonderful. The atmosphere was that there were people in their eating, drinking, lots of pasty and others.

I been craving the the almond Danish for a while, even tho Feida it's out of my way I went today, I'm so disappointed, not only the size of the bread is so much smaller but also the taste has gone bad. Since it's smaller, the bread is now crunchy and not spongy/sticky like it used to be, and I used to love. I also got 2 multigrain breads, I had to throw it away because it tasted funny. As if the seeds were exposed to humidity. The other 2 breads will go to the garbage. Wasted my money and time. Will not return.

Google
Store sells spoiled food - purchased a 8 inch taro cake. Upon receipt the cake filling tasted sour and was spoiled. Went back to the store to address the issue but they were unwilling to replace the cake, provide a refund or resolve the issue.

I find the selection here limited but the price point is lower, comparable to the mom and pop bakeries. Limited seating inside, and gets very busy in the mornings when the tour buses leave from there. Service at this location was slightly better than other Fay Da bakeries.

Google
Fay Da Bakery is one of our often-visit Hong Kong style bakeries in NYC with various options and reasonable price. Our favorites were the fried fish sandwich with veggies which were perfect for a light & healthy lunch and the fresh-cooked & rich soy milk. During COVID-19, they still sold their unpacked pastries with self-service which isn’t under the ideal safety procedures. The options currently were also limited so our visit was kind of disappointing. However, we will plan to visit shortly to see their improvements.

Ordered a cake, but the strawberry has mold, terrible!

Come here for a hidden Gem. If you love sesame balls , they have the best! I mean it’s freshly made daily and for you early birds, it’s crispy, doughy at the same time. With it covered in sesame and generously filled red bean. Your mouth will thank you! This item is always sold out before noon, so if you are an addict like me, come early!

Yelp
This is a pretty big bakery chain, but they usually have a great assortment of pastries, which I'm a huge fan of. I came in the afternoon, and there wasn't really a big crowd around. A couple of people were sitting inside, but there were still a fair number of seats open, which is nice if you're looking to catch a breath. I came to grab my classic buns, the pork floss bun. I've recently gone to search for the best spot to get this as my old regular location has closed. This spot's prices are very classic, and the bun itself was nice and soft, which is what I expected. However, the flavors of the pork floss was off. It was a little too salty, and almost had this slight funkiness to it, which is very different from the buns I'm used to elsewhere, which has a good balance of savory and sweet. It made this bun not as tasty, and I was left unimpressed.

Yelp
The pork buns are amazing but the sandwiches are horrible they taste like theyre a week old

Yelp
Despite being one of the oldest locations in the chain, Fay Da Flushing doesn't get as much shine for being such a mainstay in the neighborhood. This is likely due to the fact it hasn't changed much since opening over a decade ago and the saturation of Chinese bakeries throughout the area. Still, this is a place to get something (sandwiches, cakes, buns, drinks, etc.) in a pinch and is still frequented by many locals. Like many places in Flushing, this place is small with just a few tables. It's so small that they actively shoo folks away who linger and a sign to prove it. The hood is already jam packed with people and they need as many bodies going into the store and out of it. I am sure this is further enforced during this pandemic, hopefully with (way) less people. As a result, the customer experience really varies. On their worst days, it's a few salty employees that have soured the experience for many. But on a whole, it's not so bad if one is quick and prompt with payment. I'd forego calling ahead of time unless one can speak Chinese. That said, the food is still solid. The morning rush is intense, but it is the most ideal time to score the freshly baked goods. They have a good variety of stuff that is perfect for a snack on the go (buns, tarts, sandwiches, pastries) or a gift for someone (cakes, boxed cookies, etc.). Avoid their line of powdered bubble teas, but definitely shoot for the HK style milk tea.

Yelp
Went in the early evening to pick up a few things for my mom.. luckily this location still had her favorites do I didn't have to find another bakery... coconut bun, egg tart.. lotus seed cake. Still a good amount of bread/pastries at the end of the day. They were already cleaning up, but a few customers were sitting inside.

Yelp
This is a great bakery chain. I usually like to support small businesses but this chain is really good, especially if you need to grab something quickly on the go as everything is already individually packaged. The sponge cake was airy and fluffy and not sugary. The matcha sponge cake was a little bit denser but really yummy. The soy milk comes unsweetened, but they sweeten it for you if you like it. I wouldn't recommend to get egg tartes or anything with a flaky crust here as the packaging causes steam and this makes the crust soggy.

Yelp
Really good no-frills, Taiwanese style bakery chain. They sell out of some hot items QUICK. I've tried their curry puff pastries, mango mochi, chicken sandwiches, egg tarts, taro puffs and sticky rice. That with some refreshing soy milk. Makes for quick breakfast, lunch, or snack. I've had bubble tea here and it is nothing to write home about. Also there's PLENTY of other places to get bubble tea in the area. It's Flushing so cash is king, but this place now has $10 minimum for card. The ladies behind the counter are always nice and efficient.

Yelp
Excellent bakery . Large selection of drinks and buns. Definitely delicious . Service was excellent

Yelp
The establishment is extremely busy in the morning because it's located off Main Street and many of the morning crowd like to pick up there morning treats/coffee/tea. Their pastry are always fresh. The establishment is clean. For the most part their staff are friendly. The prices extremely reasonable. THEY ONLY ACCEPT CASH.

Yelp
I am for sure obsscessed with buns from these bakeries most importantly the tuna and eventual garlic ones. But the tuna bun in this location makes all better in my day. The location is very simple and humble, full of locals eating some huns and drinkng some tea, the place has a great price but its cash only so be prepared.

Yelp
Went here on April 11,2021 since I was in the area. It is small and clean here. Lots of food options although some are not labeled or in their proper spot so ask before you buy. All I wanted was a Pearl tea with boba. I got that as well as a Sesame ball, chocolate walnut bun and a treat that had sweet rice with roast pork. All were really tasty! My main disappointment was they didn't let me know they were out of boba. That's my favorite part of getting a boba tea. When I asked if they had put the boba inside the tea, they said" we're out how about cherry." I tried it but it didn't flow with the tea. This was the reason I didn't give five stars. It would have been appreciated if they had told me they were out of a fundamental ingredient of the item. I liken it to ordering coffee light and sweet and they just give you milk and sugar. Overall, if I return to this location I'll be detailed in my questions before I order the boba.

Yelp
My friends and I wanted to get some breakfast during our break in class and decided to visit this bakery. We picked up some things to eat when we Just saw a baby roach crawling near the food . We instantly put back our food and left the bakery

Yelp
I got the chocolate mousse cake but I don't even like chocolate cake. It was kinda good but too chocolately for me.

Yelp
Good price for everything in the bakery. Its a bakery, so I would only recommend to purchase the things they actually baked. I am disappointed with their "bubble tea" drinks as it was disgusting and the artificial flavor powder was still floating on top. The least they could have done was to stir it more thoroughly. To top that off, I ordered grass jelly, which I would imagine should soft and in shredded pieces. The jelly they dumped into my cup was a jelly block and it was dissatisfying to drink. Very disappointed. Come here for their baked pastries, but stay away from their bubble tea drinks. Very convenient location.

Yelp
Went here with the parents, who used to come here decades ago. The place seems to have been in decline though as they rely on being a waiting/ticket area for casino bus rides, which means no open places to sit. Got the japanese style cheesecake which was tasty and the fresh soy milk which was ok.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty darn tasty... The prices here are decent along with the selection. They don't seem to run out of anything and are fully stocked. I def. recommend any baos.. but my fave must be the beef curry pie and chicken curry pie. Common' now.. There's nothing better than a warm.. large piece of salty deliciousness!

Yelp
The best Asian Bake Buns that Flushing has to offer, with prices & freshness that can't be beat! My all time Fav's here are the: Pineapple Bun w/ Sweet Macaroon Coconut Stuffing Pineapple Bun w/ Sweet Egg Stuffing Dried Pork sprinkled on a thin layer of mayo on a roll, are to die for! Always baked nice & soft with the perfect blend of sweet & salty. Polite employees nice size spot with a seating area, usually full of Asians squatting with a cup of coffee... Dried Pork buns are my thing, everything from the softness of the bun, to the amount of mayo makes a difference! This spot got it down packed ... Get your Buns early, straight out da oven!
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't been to chinese bakeries in a while, so I'm sure my review is really biased from that burning desire for pineapple buns, hot dog buns, sweet cream buns.... I love the fact that not only do they have hot dog buns, but they have these really fancy ones with onions and chives in a wrap form. Everything was really fresh (they were putting new batches in as I was buying since there was so many people buying stuff), the place was clean, the coffee was good....just good stuff all around. They definitely need more seating. Come here immediately!

Yelp
Stopped by this Fay Da Bakery for coffee after having lunch at Joe's Shanghai. I picked up some breads for breakfast: milk cream bun, sweet topping redbean bun, and the walnut swirl chocolate bun. Everything was delicious and tasted fresh, even days later. Only complaints: 1) Not enough seating 2) The "art" on the bathroom door.
google avatar

Lesie H.

Yelp
I never wrote a review for this Fay Da? But I like this place! This place is currently the closest Fay Da to my apartment. It's newer than the one on Main, but not as new as the one on Kissena (wow, there's a lot of Fay Da in the neighborhood). I like the fact that it's big and spacious. It has all the standard fare that Fay Da provides. But I have to say my favorite is the Curry Beef Puff. And I can grab my own from the rotating glass instead of waiting in line and pointing.
google avatar

Yelp
Great quick stop chinese bakery by the main st. Station. The place is pretty clean. Fay da pastries deliver consistent quality and taste. Their pastries are soft and moist. Good to stop by during rush hours, or to pick up cakes and roll cakes when going over someone's house.

Yelp
Looks very nice inside Horrible ice drinks - had ice coffee and ice milk tea - horrrrible very expensive too hey it looks nice inside.

Yelp
Great location and the food is fresh since the pasties are baked on site. I am blessed that this bakery is in route from my bus transfer to the train station. It feel so effortless to pick up and go. It's cash only so that just means cash is king at this establishment, millennials stay away. The service is abrupt but cordial at the same time. The facility is relatively clean for an Asian spot that doesn't attract a lot of Westerners. This company grew bigger than many bakeries that started before them so that just means their business acumen is in place to combat competition and threats. They have a winning formula.

Yelp
Miss my cream bun! (preferably without coronavirus)

Yelp
There's so many Fay de around Flushing but I usually go to this one cause it's right downstairs from the office. I often Come here for a little snack or breakfast. The prices are reasonable for the buns. The drinks are a different story but then again people come here to just get a small coffee and tea since it's cheap , the taste is pretty good. They also carry bubble teas but around Flushing there are so many bubble tea places so it's not often people would grab their bubble tea needs here but of course you can tho. Deff do not come in if its late (around 5-7) their buns are pretty limited at those times and are usually not as good or fresh compared to the ones during the day. Although the people that work there are all Chinese and their English is limited they do understand you. They are friendly and I never had a bad experience with them.
google avatar

Natalie W.

Yelp
I love this place because it's easy to grab easy food for early mornings or midday snacks. It definitely has a good variety and good quality options. The drink options match the asian taste as well. I also enjoy the reasonable price of the food.
google avatar

Deki S.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed! The lines moved pretty fast and the service was quick. Their mango smoothie was alright. It basically crushed ice with mango juice. Their baked goods looked good but I wasn't able to try any of those.

Carl B.

Yelp
You won't enjoy your time there; you'll enjoy what you've bought, and the price, after you leave. The experience inside is crowded and rushed, thanks in part to the sign limiting people from staying past *15* minutes. Your dollar goes a long way, and so will you for a more pleasant place to eat your treats.
google avatar

LItennis M.

Yelp
I always stop here when I'm in flushing for coconut buns and other assorted baked buns. There aren't a lot of bakeries in the area so it's kind of hit or miss. This time the buns were ok, they weren't as filled as I've had them in the past. This place is hit or miss.
google avatar

Linda Z.

Yelp
Bread is generally soft and tasty. Be careful in the morning though, sometimes i find that my favorite dried pork bun is dry.(i think they sometimes use bread from the previous night) In the morning, theres a bunch of rude chinese people cutting line. Ignore them, The cashiers themselves are very nice though.
google avatar

Qian W.

Yelp
There was a fly inside the bread bin. I tried to touch the fly but it was obstructed by the lid, so that's how I know the fly and I were on opposite sides, which wasn't supposed to happen. I lift the lid up to let the fly out but it decided to just chill inside, so I just let it do its thang. I walked over to another station and got myself a ham and egg bun. The ham was sour. I am however happy to report that the fly incident does not happen every time I come. But it still gets a below average rating for its below average breads. Also the whole place just feels depressing.
google avatar

Yang K.

Yelp
This place is the bomb. It has delicious food for cheap prices. I especially like the many pastries in the bakery. Every single one of them. And that is all for a quick service.
google avatar

Kenny C.

Yelp
What can I say? It's a Chinese bakery. And compared to the Korean Paris Baguette across the street, it's a hell of a lot cheaper. And also less crowded. True, it's not the same fare, but if you're just looking for some bread or pastries then you might as well try it out. Fay Da is a chain (there are several in Manhattan's Chinatown) but I really liked this one. It wasn't crowded, and the bread selection was pretty good. They have the standard breadstuffs, like the hotdog bun, the custard bun, etc. They also have things like chicken pie, curry beef pastries, and others within a glass case. My one complaint is that their serving trays don't come with any wax paper and you just put your bread onto the trays unprotected.
google avatar

Tom Y.

Yelp
I've been going to Fay Da for many years now! They always have cheap and solid pastries, and while they might not be as sexy as some up and coming new bakeries around the city, they are a reliable source of starch, sugar, and caffeine at all times of day! My favorite pastry here is the dan tat (egg custard), it's huge and only a dollar! I usually grab one after dim sum or if I'm in the area craving one! Their pineapple and melon buns are delicious as well! The service here is much nicer and better than surrounding Chinese bakeries in the area by far. Definitely check out this place!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Lots of yeast, but little substance. Fay Da Bakery has increased the size of many of their baked products, but so has their price point. It's $1 for most of their buns, but the fillings such as roast pork, or custard in the buns is less. So the buns seem to be more light and airy, which can be accomplished by adding more yeast, thereby being less everything but air, to make it look bigger. It no longer is as crowded as it use to be since Paris Baguette opened up across the street, and may find itself buried in a few years if they pull more stunts like this to piss off their remaining patrons. I'll just have to go to other Chinese bakeries where I'm paying less to eat less air.
google avatar

XiaoHwa N.

Yelp
What can I say? I'm a sucker for some Fay Da Pullman Bread. Right next to my go-to Dim Sum joint, Jade Asian, I always stop here afterwards for some red bean sesame balls and pullman bread to bring home. They also have those oh-so-good-but-bad sweet buns with hot dogs inside. This is the stuff I grew up with so I'm a little addicted not just to the food but to the memories. The buns are huge. The iced coffee is pretty darn good (but not as good as Taipan). And, lucky for the halfie Asian that I am, the English is getting better.
google avatar

Bin L.

Yelp
Came here twice. Each time we buy snacks for my father's coworkers adjacent to the bakery.
google avatar

Sharon T.

Yelp
2 napkins for 3 hot drinks without coffee collars, really?
google avatar

Ju L.

Yelp
As another reviewer said, too bad this place quickly became a waiting area for daily gamblers before they board casino buses. They're rude and take up all the seats at every hour of the day. The bakery at least seems to have made an effort keeping the floors cleaner since the gamblers' residence. Otherwise this place was nice when it opened, especially since it's so near the buses. Prices have shot up in recent years. A selection of buns: - The roast pork/char siu buns ($1) are TERRIBLE, flavor and texture completely off and barely any filling. I redact my earlier review. - The sweet potato puffs ($1.25) are pretty good in the morning. - The croissants ($1.25) come out around 7, 7:30am and are very good before they deflate. What does it mean when a Chinese bakery screws up the most traditional bun but can master puff pastry?
google avatar

Yelp
I went in around lunch hour today with one of my friends. As I looked at the prices, I was a little confused, since I thought it was a little expensive for Flushing. My friend told me she would treat me, so I decided on the tiramisu. I have ONLY ever had tiramisu in Italian restaurants and I DON'T usually eat Asian desserts or delicacies but this hit the spot! I was so impressed by the taste, by the consistency, and by the sheer size of it. I am not sure whether I will be returning to Fay Da, but now I know that if I ever have a craving while I'm at work, Fay Da is only two minutes away!
google avatar

Yelp
Chicken puff and a large milk tea. Simple, quick, delicious.

Yelp
Fay Da is a relatively well-known Chinese bakery with many locations, including one outside of a Chinese neighborhood, the West Village. We stopped by this spacious location on 39th Ave for some drinks. The baked goods are attractively displayed in a well-lit case in the center, effectively dividing the space between table seating on the left and the ordering/pay counter (with cakes and cold drinks in a refrigerator) on the right, although they could make better use of the space immediately upon entering. Staple drinks that we ordered to go were fine (hot lemon tea for me, coffee milk tea for a friend).

Jerry C.

Yelp
Honestly should just close down if you can't hire competent people. 3x already it has happened 3 times where they can't tell the difference between coffee and tea. I spoke in Chinese/Cantonese depending on the lady so you can't even say that their English is bad as an excuse. I never drink coffee so every time they get it wrong, it's like wtf am I gonna do with this? I just give it to my co-worker. I go back and tell them and their like "no not me, I never saw you before" nice job passing the blame onto the customer. Now I ordered large milk tea paid for large and received a medium l. I go in and tell them they got it wrong again, the lady legit just took my medium poured into a large cup and added ice till it looks full. Genius!!!!! +1$ for large well spent!!!!

Yelp
I just happened to be in Flushing and decided to stop by. This is the second time I have visited this place and figured I'd finally write a review on it. Place seems overrated. The breads seemed to be soft when bought but tasted old. The cakes seem nice but were dry as a bone. I also got a green apple green tea. I dont think they know how to make them. Overall not a good experience. Im sure there are better bakeries in Flushing NY, but since I dont live up there I dont know where. Happy Eatings!!

Yelp
I came here because I was closer to this one, then my usual bakery on Roosevelt...and I was running late...i looked around and found croissant with ham and cheese which is what I usually get from the other place...i noticed that this one is 65¢ more then the other one, but I have it at shot anyway...i also ordered a mango smoothie with no milk and tapioca and that $5!!! Geez!!! Well gladly, it was good...but NOT good enough for me to go here again for the smoothie...the ham and cheese croissant was really good, but not better the other bakery...
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Ok, its not the most jolly bakery... and it's not the best baked goods... I'm not even going to rate its decor... HOWEVER, this review is honor of the Fay Da TARO ROOT Pastry. NO ONE ELSE HAS ANYTHING LIKE IT (that I know of). Which is why I KEEP COMING BACK. This delightful little purple pastry has a flakey outer crust and a soft center. It's not too sweet but filling. Perfect with a cup of tea or coffee. AGAIN, NO ONE ELSE HAS IT! Ahhh... this little pastry has brought me many many many moments of bliss. MUST TRY ONE or TWO or...TRY ONE!

Yelp
I recently visited this Fay Da location at 136-18 39th Avenue, Flushing, NY 11354. The location has become extremely dirty, and the customers waiting for the gambling bus were extremely rude and loud. Some of the gambling bus customers were also harassing other customers making it feel unsafe. When the Fay Da bakery first opened there, it was a very nice place before the gambling bus company started to use it as a waiting area. I hope Fay Da does something about this, or I will take my business to the many other bakeries in Flushing.

Yelp
I am an ABC, but I still like to go into chinese bakeries and take in the smells and sights. I guess I just like bakeries in general, and I dont discriminate. Bakeries to me have always been a treat to visit. There is something about bakeries that makes them feel so cozy, and warm. So I guess I am biased. I like Fay Da, I guess becuase it was one of the first Chinese bakeries I was introduced to as a kid. I still eat their wheat bread, and I still eat their corn+ham pastry. I am not very adventurous at times, but these are my staples. I have tried their version of mochi, and it is very good. Very soft, and the ingredients are very fresh, but make sure you eat it soon, because the contnents tend to spoil fast. Their bubble tea is OK. They always put way too much tapioca, and at times, it is way too sweet for me. Go elsewhere for bubble tea, but they make quality pastries and bread for everyday.

Yelp
Such a convenient location by the buses though it does get very packed during the morning rush hour. They are on top of keeping the bins full of freshly baked buns - my favorites are the sweet topping bun with custard and the egg custard dan tat. The buns are a decent size and not too soft/mushy which can happen. Service is quick in and out no nonsense but that's OK. It's so crowded and the tables are full of older aunties and uncles that it's best to take it to go.
