The 38 Best Restaurants in Markham, Ontario | Eater

"This stalwart Hakka restaurant has been at it for 20-plus years, serving splendid Indian-Chinese hits like perennial favorite chile chicken, kan shue green beans, and sublimely wokky Manchurian chow mein. Its takeout game is strong, too. Note: The restaurant only serves halal meat, so if you’re craving proteins of the porcine sort, you’d best look elsewhere. [$]" - Faiyaz Kara

Passing through Markham , came upon Fredrick’s ! Had heard a lot about it, so stopped in for lunch . Place was filling up fast, staff were busy making sure everyone was served. They were professional and friendly. The lunch specials are great - large selection, great price ($9.75 !!!) . Ordered chilli chicken as well as General Tao chicken with fried rice. Portions are good, food was tasty and well prepared.

Its a really popular restaurant in Markham, it’s popularity could be measured by number of takeouts and queue for a table. We had to wait 30 mins to get a table, reservation recommended. It has decent ambience even has waiting area. Their portion size is huge for 2 people. It is famous for hakka Chinese. I tried vegetarian options like hakka noodles and veg manchurian, it was good. Could have been little more spicy but I liked the food. Would recommend anyone in GTA looking for hakka Chinese food must visit this place.

We were 12 people celebrating a birthday dinner. A couple of people were here before and suggested our dishes to try. Everyone said that they enjoyed the food. I particularly enjoyed the hot and sour soup! The deep fried squid was also very good. The chicken rice noodles were tasty. My only pet peeve is that they left the tails on the sweet and sour shrimp. Plenty of parking available. We waited about 12 minutes for our reserved table. I hope that we won’t have to wait for our reservation on our next visit.

We’ve been coming to this place since it first opened, back when the original owner was still around. It’s always had a very homely vibe that makes you feel welcome, and the staff are genuinely kind and polite. This time, we ordered Chicken Pakora, Chilli Paneer, and Veg Fried Rice. The flavors were on point as always—delicious and well-prepared. Portion sizes are on the smaller side, which might be something to keep in mind if you’re dining with a group. We were also served plain rice, which was just enough for what we ordered, though the quantity was minimal. Service is one of the strongest points here—very prompt, efficient, and always with a smile. The ambiance is pleasant, making it a great place for a casual dinner. We’ll definitely be returning. If you’re craving Indian Hakka Chinese, this spot is worth checking out.

We tried their chili chicken, fried rice, and hot and sour soup. Everything tasted delicious and perfect. The food tasted really good, and the employees were friendly and welcoming.

Google
This is usually our place to go for good food, but this time I’m very disappointed. First we got given dirty cup with paper pieces in it. Then we ordered the food, usually it’s fast but this time took a very long time. Other customers who came in later got their food much faster. The worst part was I found piece of plastic in my seafood soup, luckily it didn’t go into my children’s soup and cause them to choke. Server just apologized, when I asked to speak to management she said there was no one here. Edited - they took the price of the soup off the bill as compensation.

The food was so so. The hot & sour soup was very average not much flavor. The beans were good. The chicken & eggplant was in so much sauce and too sweet.

Google
Amazing food, their chicken dishes are top nosh, Fried shrimp, Bombay Chicken, Manchurian Chicken, Chilli beef, and hakka chow mein with rice dishes are amazing. I have been going to their scarborough location for almost 20 years. (Last dine in was 10 years ago) but this markham location has become my new destination had 2 dine in last 3 months, friendly staff and food quality is amazing. Seating environment is Convenient and tons of parking(scarborough one was hit and miss for parking). 10/10 and for 2 person dinner with 3 dishes with 2 free steam rice the bill always around $50 taxes including range with tons of food remaing to pack over / take home.

Yelp
Their food is out of this world!! There's no better Hakka in this city or any other I've visited. Their service is great, it's hard to beat this place as the ambiance also is top notch.

Yelp
Federick is one of the old school original Indo Hakka restaurants in Toronto. I've eaten there many times over the years. This time, we went for lunch at their newer location off Markham Rd. Most in our party of seven were unfamiliar with this place. We ordered several dishes, including Chilli Chicken, Fried Rice, Tofu, Calamari, and more. My dining companions, especially the first-timers, loved it all. It was good but I prefer the food at the original location in Scarborough.

Yelp
Heard really good things about Frederick's. We were in the area and wanted some Hakka food. We ordered the chili chicken and crispy ginger beef. Our orders came with white rice. Sadly, the chili chicken was underwhelming and didn't have any strong flavours; it wasn't even spicy. The crispy ginger beef was almost too burnt to eat, but the flavours were somewhat decent. The rice is the worst part, it was like they had given us couple days old rice. It definitely was not fresh. As much as we hate wasting food, we had to throw much of it away. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
I think Federicks redeemed themselves, our waiter was super friendly and very attentive, luckily they weren't too busy when we were there. We ordered the American chip suey, garlic chicken, chicken pakora, chicken corn soup and chilli chicken. Everything was so fresh, and hot, the garlic chicken was sweet and spicy, the staff were attentive and listened to us that we wanted the soup and pakora first because before they never cared so I can see the service definitely improved as well as their food. The chicken corn soup was really flavourful especially with the red hot sauce, and the pakora was hot and squeeze that lemon it was crispy and juicy on the inside I can eat these all day, the American chop suey was so good with that crispy noodle and egg flavour bomb, and the garlic chicken oh my goodness they improved this like crazy, And the food wasn't that salty either, great job on Federick the staff have a smile on their face, this place will be around for generations upon generations RIP to the humble owner very kind soul but he lives on through this legacy.

Yelp
Food is always hot, fresh and well seasoned. Portion size is good and value per dish is still in line compared to many well over processed restaurants. The place is clean and orderly. You always get a pitcher of water at the table. Their customer service seems to have improve as most of the staff was that friendly in the past. Hiring more females must have helped this as they are great.

Yelp
Food is great. Price is good ... service can improve. The only time service is good is when we get takeout ... eating inside the restaurant is also a challenge with their service. Ambiance is good.

Yelp
I was so happy to find this place! I had been here years ago with friends and all was good. First time I went on my own to get takeout a few weeks ago I got beef chow mein and kung pao chicken. I asked if the chicken was spicy and the man taking my order said "no, not really" - the dish was literally covered in cut chillis!! It was sooo spicy I could hardly eat it. I had to pick out all the pieces of chilli. Went again yesterday and got beef chow mein again and general Tao chicken (knowing that wouldn't be as spicy). Food was delicious and the portion of noodles especially is insane for the price! Chicken was very fresh and not covered in batter like other places. Was happily enjoying my meal and then I bit into something hard. It was a piece of metal!! Looks like steel wool possibly? I checked the rest of my food carefully and didn't see anything else. I continued eating but just could not enjoy it the same way. I'm sure it's a fluke thing. I didn't bother to call to inform them as I know it wouldn't do anything. I trust this is not something that happens regularly. I can't feel the same way about this place though and if I did order again, I will always be eating with caution

Yelp
Wow. The chicken pakora are out of this world. Fresh, crunchy, spicy and mouth watering. The place was hopping busy but the staff was working effectively, efficiently and smoothly. Good decor and comfortable seats. Overall my most favorite hakka halal Chinese.

Yelp
The cooking aroma lured me in from the parking lot. Surprisingly, they are still offering great lunch deals (less than $10!) in February 2022, with a decent amount of protein and comes with a pop. Hakka cuisine can be similar to some traditional Chinese dishes with a hint(or a lot) of a Indian spices and chilli heat. Not my usual go to for cuisine but like I said the aroma shouted something good is being made here! I ordered three dishes to try from a Manchurian Beef(sweet red soy saucy?) Chili Fish and Shanghai noodles with Shrimp. The first two were medium spice and super saucey. The fish was drowning in spicy sauce so much so that I couldn't finish it and wanted some clean plain rice to soak up the palate. The Shanghai noodles were decent. A tad greasy, but I suppose that's a dish trade mark and great flavours. It had lots of shrimp and finely julienned veg sauté into it. I would come back again to try more lunch dishes again, it's a great deal here!

Yelp
Best Hakka food in Toronto & Markham. Love the fried scallops, Manchurian shrimp fried rice. Service is great. Dishes arrive quickly & hot. Also great for take out.

Carina K.

Yelp
They were able to seat nine on very short notice which was really nice! However, there was inconsistency between the dishes, e.g., one rice dish was way too bloated and overcooked while the other was fine. The food tasted ok overall, but I had a minor stomach ache later that day. However, the seating, service, and ambience inside the restaurant was super nice!

T J.

Yelp
Best pakora chicken I've ever had. I order take-out here regularly and the service is relatively good. They are good at accommodating allergies which makes this a staple for my family.

Yelp
It's a decent spot for Hakka. We got there at 1pm on a saturday and ordered 3 dishes for carry out. Only carry out available right now from covid restrictions. I would highly recommend the garlic chicken, chicken pakora and chicken chow mein noodle. We also ordered the chilli chicken and asked for saucey but I have had better in other locations. Pros: -Halal Meat -Fair prices (average $10/dish) -They give you a discount if you pay cash, so drop them dollar bills $$ Service was super fast, less than 20 min for our carry out.
google avatar

Stephen C.

Yelp
The best place for Hakka Chinese food. Expect the food to be greasy and extremely flavorful. Spicy chicken, fried rice, chow mein all on point. We love the spicy food here. Prices are a little pricy for the quality of food. But when cravings hit, it still seems worth it. Service is generally ok but rushed. Regardless, we know what to expect when we come here and being predictable and consistent is actually one of the reasons we keep coming back.

Yelp
How is it possible to make food with absolutely no flavour? Well at Fredrick's it is possible. So bland, tasteless food. Never again
google avatar

Vince L.

Yelp
Large portion sizes and tasty. Great deals for lunch for under $10!! Recommend the chilli chicken dry.

Oriana R.

Yelp
Worst service ever. We were eating and they started cleaning using harsh pungent chemical spray. We were with our old parents and most importantly our toddler child. The smell was so overwhelming that we had to cut it short. It was only 10:20 pm they started cleaning and the restaurant is supposed to be open till 11 pm. When we called them and raised the concern they started arguing and said that they start cleaning by 10:30pm but it was way before that. Most importantly, it's unhygienic and unhealthy for all of us and my baby to eat in that atmosphere with full of chemical mist. The fact that they argued showed that they don't have any concern about customer. I will never go to this place where they don't value the customers' health and feedback.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food quality and service. Consistent and reliable. Had a large order and when I checked, everything was perfect. Forget places like Swiss Chalet who mess up all the time, and go the Fredericks for better food and service

Yelp
Dropped by on a Saturday lunch to pick up food for my friends. Food was ordered 20 minutes prior my arrival. I did not expect the order to be available right away, but I waited another 40 minutes before my order was ready. I did ask the staff when would my order be ready, she said 10 minute since the kitchen was working on the last item. She should have told me at least another half a hour since the kitchen was behind with some catering takeout order. Quite frustrating when the staff not communicate with the customers and let us wait like idiots. If it takes 30 minute plus, or you missed the original order, just let us know.

Arvind V.

Yelp
The best Hakka food in town. The service is very quick. We always have the chilli chicken with extra gravy. The chicken pakora is amazing. Love the American chop suey with crispy noodles.

Yelp
As of Jan 2022 still pandemic times. This location of Federick is one of our go to for Hakka dishes. We don't travel as far as we used to for food, due to increased fuel prices. Along with Resto prices have also been increased. We usually get a rice dish and a noodle dish and an entree. We love their portioning on their fried rice dishes. They have a slightly larger assortment of chicken offerings than other restos we visit. Since Beef and Pork is a big no-no for me managing Gout. Apologies for no snapshots ^_^;; usually when we go it's late dinner time and we are super hungry and forget to take pics. IF we happen to swing by during day time hours I'll do best to take some snaps of what was ordered and post at a later date :) Wifey and I take turns on deciding the entree of choice. Example : chili chicken dry vs chili chicken with gravy. I usually like the gravy to go with the steamed rice, she prefers the dry. So hence taking turns :) Service : 3/5 it's an Asian resto, the staff service on courtesy and proper treatment of customers when ordering is kinda hit and miss. Food : 3.5/5 usually the dishes we order are quite good, not stellar. Tho enough to satisfy our cravings. Repeat visit worth : 5/5 this is a YES for us :)

Yelp
This Hakka restaurant can get really packed and busy, even on a Sunday night (when we came) Luckily we got in before the crowd as there were seats available. However, within 15 mins, people started to come in and a line was forming. So yes, you can tell that this restaurant is pretty popular, but I'm not surprised why. Their menu offers a good selection of items, and a lot of choices for vegetarians as well. The food items (even despite how busy it gets) comes fairly quickly, within 10 mins or so. The portion sizes are pretty good for the price you pay, and usually one dish is enough for 2 people. - Chili Chicken ($9.99): as mentioned, the size is fairly big, and the chili chicken only comes as the dry version (some places offer dry or with sauce), and a big bowl of rice to accompany it. The chicken was nice and soft, and there was a good amount of chili spice to it! One of my fav dishes :) - Kan Shue Green Beans ($7.50): Like the chili chicken, the dish was pretty big overall. The beans were abit overcooked as I found it dry, but other than that, the spices used were good. I recommend coming to this place for delicious Hakka food, just try to come before the lineups start haha!

Yelp
A second location for a staple in Scarborough. Definitely can't go wrong with Feddy's for their lunch specials. As a few yelpers have mentioned, the chili chicken - dry and chicken pakoras are *chef's kiss*, and their portion sizes are good. I haven't dined in in a while, but I have no complaints as it is very similar to many Asian restaurants I've been to. Don't expect five star service - it gets the job done for a cheap, quick meal. I only gave four stars because it's challenging to call ahead to place an order for pick-up. I once called about 10+ times because the phone was always busy. That said, they are a BUSY place, especially at lunch and on weekends. So if you do get through - call ahead for pick up. If you don't, you're better off going in an placing an order in store, but be prepared to wait. Regardless, Feddy's is always a hit at potlucks - will always recommend!

Martin D.

Yelp
Let's get one thing straight. The food here is one of the best, if not the best Hakka food in the GTA. The chilli chicken is very unique and no other hakka place comes close to the taste. When you're dining in all is well but the experience of trying to get take out at this place is horrendous to say the least. Like you can try calling but one will answer or the phone line just goes on a busy tone. Once in a while you might get lucky and somebody picks up. Nobody has time to go to a restaurant to place an order for food and then wait 30 to 45 mins for it to be ready! Other than the irritating process of getting take out from this place, I'd say this is a solid place for some pretty yummy hakka food.
google avatar

Yelp
Great business. I love love love their chillies chicken with extra gravy . I am always craving this type of food . It brings a good heat to the tong, one sad thing is that the location is way way to far... I wish they open one up in York region , we are always looking for Indian fusion restaurant and there isn't many around here in Newmarket. Please do us a favour and open one ASAP!!!!!!!

Yelp
Has anyone out there seen the episode "The Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld? Where Kramer, Elaine, George, and Jerry line up for the most delicious soup they've ever eaten. Despite the service they keep coming back because the soup is that good. Federick Restaurant is like that. The food is fantastic (5 stars). The value is amazing (5 stars). Your order comes out very quick. The portions are hard to believe for the amount you get. So delicious, flavourful, hot, fresh and will have you coming back for more (5 stars). The issue, like all other Yelpers have noticed is the service. Don't expect pleasantries, serve on you hand and foot, or your meal to come at the same time as others in your party. When you do get it and dig into it, you'll realize why there is consistently a wait during lunch hour. The food it that good. Anything on the lunch menu is amazing. So be prepared...food & value 5 stars. Service with a smile, not so much.

Yelp
Terrible service. Mediocre food. Unnessary costs. To be blunt, I didn't have the best experience. I came here as a group of 9. They made us pay a service charge even though we didn't want to. They said it's okay, we don't have to pay for tips. The servers barely paid any attention to us throughout our whole visit. The foods tasted mediocre. I got a curried paneer dish. It tasted as if it didn't even have salt. I also had some soup and fried rice. The fried rice tasted as if it was burnt and the vegetables were too hard to chew. The soup was not good at all, we didn't even finish it.
google avatar

Sharmila T.

Yelp
Great spot for lunch or dinner if you're craving Hakka food! I used to have Federicks a lot growing up so it was nothing new to me. They have been consistently good in terms of the food. However sometimes, the gravy for the chilli chicken can taste watered down. Price wise, they are quite affordable. Tip: go during lunch hours to take advantage of the lunch special :)

Louseb E.

Yelp
Their Haka Noodles (chicken and shrimp) is one of the best and rarely disappoints so we buy it quite regularly (my son's favorite breakfast!). Lunch specials (Haka Noodles or Chili chicken both with rice and pop) are a good deal at $7.25 (weekdays from 11 to 3 or something) but I am not sure if they use MSG heavily because in my last order of Chili Chicken it tasted a bit different i.e. overly tasty. As in most Chinese food shops / restaurants, you are a fool to expect excellent customer service. Federick is none of it. They are simply a kitchen that cooks and wrap your takeout for you. No frills or anything so it is better to just order a takeout as you will be cursing them if you dine in. These guys would like you out if you sit more than 15 minutes as they don't make money per order, but rely basically on fast turnover. I will continue to investigate if they are heavily dependent on MSG to flavor their food.

Yelp
Frederick's is one of those classic Hakka Restaurants, I honestly don't know any Hakka lovers who haven't heard of them This location in particular is definitely one of the better Hakka Restaurants! I often come here with my family or for quick bite with friends. It great for either takeout or dine in. However, on weekends, there's a bit of a wait for dine in, even if you made a reservation before hand. I some of my usual go-to dishes are: Chicken Pakoras - some of the best ones out there, Super crispy, and always flavourful. Veggie Hakka Noodles - SO GOOD, especially if you dine in, The noodles are always thick and cooked so well. Never soggy or limp. Chili Chicken with Gravy - a staple! it has a lot of green chillies Manchurian Chicken with Gravy - Tossed in a Red Manchurian Sauce, it has a great taste and its not too spicy! Chilli Paneer: It's honestly a great alternative if you're a vegetarian. Veggie Fried Rice - it's honestly just as good as the Chicken Fried Rice, (they just substitute the chicken with Broccoli ) so if you have vegetarian with you, definitely get this to share! Chicken Corn Soup - A Hakka Staple! It's a pretty mild soup with exactly as its described; chicken and corn. Hot and Sour Soup - absolutely delicious! The portions are always generous, and the price point is pretty great. They also have some really great Lunch Specials.
google avatar

Yelp
Huge portions at affordable prices, but comes at a cost. I usually come in for their lunch special as they're just down the street. I've tried a few of their specials but my go-to is always the Manchurian chicken with rice. It's full of flavour, not too spicy and comes in a generous portion. The lunch special also comes with a drink, either chinese tea or a selection of pop. While I normally get take-out, I did try staying in one day. The restaurant had a good number of people coming in and out for lunch, wait time was minimal. While the food portions and pricing is very appealing, I did find the service to be a bit lacking. I'm not sure if they're just short staffed, but I find that the waiters can sometimes be a little less than friendly unless you're asking for the bill. I would still recommend this place for affordable Hakka food in the Markham area, but primarily for the lunch specials.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
3.5 stars My favourite place to go for lunch special. They're usually pretty busy, and you have to wait a bit for a seat. The portions are pretty big and so good for the price

Yelp
I'm not always the biggest fan of Hakka food, but I've heard so many wonderful things about Federick that I had to give it a try. I have been to the location in Scarborough, but they seemed to be completely different to be honest. My visit to Federick was for dinner on a cold snowy night so it was nice to warm yourself up with some Hakka spices. The chicken pakora is supposed to be one of the best in the city, so I had to order it. However, I opted to go for the Combo Pakora instead because I love a good sampler, and a taste of everything they had sounded better. The combo pakora is mix of their chicken, shrimp, and fish pakora. The chicken pakora was great. Dark meat chunks mixed in with their batter. The shrimp pakora wasn't so good. Just small pieces of shrimp with each mouthful being more batter than meat. The fish pakora was flaky, tender, and seasoned with a nice kick. For a main, I also shared Chili Chicken Dry with the wife. I like dry because gravy is always so soupy and drenching, that it hides more of the chicken taste and crunch that I enjoy so thoroughly. The chili chicken here was excellent. The chicken was crisp while the spices weren't too overbearing (though I asked the server for a bit mild). The portion size is insane and they season very well, so no shortage of flavor either. The place is a lot nicer than I imagined it to be. Service was great too as there were never any shortage of servers walking around and checking in on you. The food does come out fast, and the prices are great. They have a nice lunch menu with combo specials directed for one. They only have a la carte for dinner so don't expect any good combo deals. Everything is still priced nicely though so no complaints.

Yelp
Food- 4/5 Service- 1/5 Good food. Slow and careless service which I knew before I went my first time. All good as my expectations were low, but always hard for me to return to a place that doesn't seem to appreciate my business. Vegetable Pakoras were weak. Chili Chicken (Dry style and Dark dark meat only) excellent. Haka Chow Mein excellent. Manchurian Beef average. Next time I'd try chicken or shrimp pakoras and replace Manchurian Beef with Garlic Shrimp. We'll see if I return!

Yelp
Federick's is one of those places you hate to love cuz the food, while so good, is just not good for you! I dropped by for a weekday dinner and boy this place was hopping at 8:30pm, don't people cook at home anymore? We ordered a couple of cold beers, fish pakoras, chili chicken, and the hakka noodles! All dishes came out quick, hot, and of course generous in portion. We had enough left overs for lunch the next day. And the price you may ask? Cheap! For the amount you get plus two beers with tip was about $40! About cuz I didn't pay and never saw the bill. That's what friends are for!

Yelp
I've been having takeout here regularly and have never been disappointed by Frederick's for Hakka chinese food. Simply put, the food is tasty, cheap, and plentiful. You can't go wrong with that. We typically order one noodle or fried rice dish. I highly recommend the Manchurian style which is a mild combination of sweet and spicy. And you get a choice of two proteins too! The classic is with chicken and shrimp. There's always a healthy amount toppings in your fried rice and noodles; these are some hefty carb dishes. As for portion size, they give you enough to feed an extra two more people than you would think! We seem to get two extra bowls of white rice which is a nice gesture. Can't ever get enough carbs right? I won't go into too much about the protein dishes here but the main idea with Indian Hakka food is that there isn't too much being done besides having your choice of protein in a certain sauce/style; the main proteins being chicken, beef, shrimp, and fish. My favourite here has to be the garlic sauce which is very savory. It's a somewhat sweet garlicky sauce. Besides that, the chicken pakora is very good here although I do recommend to have that at the restaurant for the maximum crispiness. In addition, the sizzling plates are also a good bet here. Again, I recommend to have that at the restaurant. You do get that extra iron skillet taste to it. Some things to note: 10% off if you pay by cash for takeout orders. And minimum $15 purchase for debit use and $20 for credit use. You can also get fortune cookies for takeout which they will give to you, but only upon request.

Yelp
Everyone raves about this place like it's amazing. I've come here plenty of times and I don't know if the novelty has just worn off on me or that I'm a little bit more critical when it comes to hakka food since I am hakka. Anyways, my family comes to this location quite often since we live close by. We have had parties here with large tables as well. The food is affordable and portion sizes good. Their Hakka Chow Mein is my favourite thing here. We ordered the hakka sweet noodle too - I didn't think it was anything special. The Manchurian chicken lacked flavour. Their chilli fish with gravy is tasty but we found the portion size to be a little small compared to all the other protein dishes. In addition, they came out with our chilli fish dish after we had basically finished our entire meal. Their chicken pakora also just tasted like fried chicken and lacked flavour. Last night our female server was especially nice and polite meanwhile there was an older male server who would just ignore us the entire time and at one point waved us off when we asked for cutlery. Long story short, there are other Hakka places that I think make better food but this one is good but overhyped.
google avatar

Kit R.

Yelp
Chili chicken is ok, but it tastes too much like Maggi Sauce. Ordered the mixed Manchurian noodles (the red one) and it was way too salty. Unimpressed. This used to be popular during my high school/college years. It's gone downhill I think. Especially now that more and more Hakka places are popping up in the GTA.

Yelp
Summary: popular Hakka dishes in big portion sizes are fairly tasty, although service is iffy and lighting is dim. Top Must-Get: Manchurian Chicken Top Regret: Chicken Fried Rice This is the most popular Hakka restaurant in an area full of them (three in that plaza)! We get seated pretty quickly for lunch, but I've been here for dinner and sometimes there's a wait. To be honest, it's good, but not worth waiting for. First impressions? Dark and confusing. When you walk in, there are two doors. One (to the right) is for dine in, and the other (go straight) is for takeout, but it's easy to miss the signs because they opt for a dimmer ambience. Maybe it's supposed to be romantic, but I personally find it feeling moody and broody, especially since the service staff often look bored to match. BUT TO THE POINT - the food. First thing, it's going to be a nice sized portion, and second thing, it's going to be drenched in sauce. I found out on my last visit, after ordering, that you can get it dry, and will be trying that next time - but the sauce does go well with rice, which comes with the lunch special. Food comes pretty fast and lunch comes with a pop of your choice. Chili chicken is fairly good. Darker colour, lots of kick, and - with all the sauce - you can't really make out the tenderness or juiciness of the chicken, but it's good. Manchurian chicken is like chili chicken but with less kick, more sweetness, and way more red sauce (which I think is just artificial colouring; it LOOKS spicier but definitely isn't). Pakora (chicken) are pretty good. I think they deep fry peppers with the chicken altogether, because a pepper was caked in one of the fried exteriors - so it's definitely got a bit of spice, but not too hot. A bit more oily than I like, but that's most deep fry places. The chicken fried rice was a little boring. Not a ton of flavour, somewhat dry, and the mixed veggies that came mixed in (carrots, peas, etc) were kind of bland. I'd pass on this dish. Over all, pretty good for a quick, filling, saucy-somewhat-greasy meal!

Yelp
3.0 stars Never really tried Hakka food before because can't take spicy food. But gave it a try anyways. First of all the decor was clean and modern which was nice. We had Hakka chow mein with chicken and shrimps not spicy and portion was huge. The Manchurian chicken was a bit spicy but I prefer more sweet and sour spicy which this was not. The fried squid was really good if you like fried stuff.

Yelp
Came for late dinner. The food was fresh and really nice. Enjoyed the food here very much. We usually come here at lunch time, the lunch specials are great. The prices are very reasonable and the quantities are just right.

Yelp
Okay, before we start, let's get this straight and clear...Hakka food in the GTA is not really Hakka food. The Hakka food that they serve in Hakka restaurants is actually a fusion of Indian and Hakka food.. Chinese Hakka that immigrated to India and developed a fusion of Hakka and Indian flavours that was see today. Chicken Pakoras, Manchurian Beef and Chili Chicken??? Real Hakka food? Nope, not real Chinese Hakka, but Indian Hakka. Real Hakka dishes are things like Stuffed Hakka Tofu, Braised Pork Belly with Dried Hakka Mustard Greens...stuff most people would never see unless you go to someone's house. How do I know all this stuff? Cause I'm Hakka from India so I got some inside knowledge of this stuff baby! Federick is an offshoot by one of the original owners of Federick in Scarborough. This place is jammed so if you plan to eat in do make reservations especially dinner time during weekends or you'll be waiting a while. Food is generally consistent but we've have some days where it was off as if the the main chef was not in that day. Some favourites include Chili Chicken (both dry and wet style), Chicken and Shrimp Pakora and Hakka Noodles. The chili in vinegar condiment is done actually pretty well so slather that thing on if you are chili head like me:) Because they are often packed, service is without a smile with the workers unlike the ones in Mickey D's. They do have a separate line and entrance for those who want take out so that helps relieve the long line ups that can occur during dinner rush. Overall it's a solid Indian Hakka restaurant... Yes people, say it with me, it's "Indian Hakka" okay???

Yelp
Great Hakka take out, this place even has a dedicated take out door like a Swiss Chalet. They have an extensive menu and do a good job with large, hearty portions of Hakka everything. Noodles, soup, meat, sauces, rice etc. Their lunch specials are the reason to go, because for under $10 you'll be full and haply with your decision. For dinner take out, still good value. They give you a 10% cash discount so even better value.

Yelp
This is not my first time coming to this restaurant but I must say that the quality and consistency of the food and service is slipping. I was immmediately asked how many people I was going to be dining with as i walked in and was seated accordingly. My friend and I were deciding on what to order and had gotten carried away into a conversation. We were quite rudely interrupted by a server asking us if we were ready to order. The server was very to the point and did not come off as too friendly. However, this was not our first time here and we've had servers with a lot of enthusiasm! We had an order of the dry chili chicken and the hakka squid. The food we ordered took about 15 minutes to come which was not a problem. Both the chili chicken and the hakka squid were covered in a lot of breading. However the flavour of the meat could still be tasted and was still quite delicious. The dishes also came with a bowl of white rice which was more than enough for two hungry people! The ambiance and decor of the restaurant was quite submissive and warm and makes a good place to dine in and have good conversation. The total price of the meal was just above $20 which is quite fair compared to other hakka restaurants. I would definitely recommend the hakka squid if you decide to check out this restaurant!

Yelp
Amazing quality/fresh ingredients! We keep coming back for lunch. My co-workers love this place. Their Chili chicken is amazing and I understand it is also their most popular dish. It's crispy on the outside, juicy and tender chicken on the inside and the sauce is packed with terrific flavour. The colour is very appetizing and inviting. I recommend the green chilies chopped in vinegar that sits atop each table. The chow mein was great! Great flavour and a mixture of crispy and soft noodles underneath. There's no doubt we will continue to come back. I wouldn't hesitate to order the same dishes again. Service is no nonsense, all business, as expected. They need to keep up with a lot of customers and high turnover of tables. This place is always busy for lunch and expect to wait if you arrive at 12:30pm on a Friday.

Yelp
Def. one of my favourite Chinese restaurants! Whenever my family or friends want Chinese, we either come here to eat, or order for take-out, and were never disappointed (well, so far)! The portions are huge, and the dishes are delicious. I have tried many items on the menu, however my favourites would be the hot and sour soup, Manchurian chicken fried rice and chilli chicken. Those three are a must have when eating here. The service is exceptional; the staff are kind, however they do not come so often to check up on you. However, whenever you do need something, they do come to you quick, so that's a plus.

Yelp
Since being introduced by friends to Federick's some years ago, we have always ensured to visit when in Toronto. Having no Hakka cuisine in Montreal, it is something we desperately crave and look forward to. There has always been a line-up which proves that everyone who goes once, definitely returns. It is clean inside with a lovely oriental-style décor and comfortable seating. The staff work very fast and are not necessarily the friendliest but make sure to get the job done. We have tried a few dishes and our favourites have to be: Chicken Pakoras for starters - absolutely delicious, crispy chicken fritters which taste divine with plum sauce Hot & Sour Soup - filled with vegetables and the broth that is bursting with flavour! Highly recommend especially on a cold day Beef Schezwan - succulent soft pieces of beef in schezwan sauce served with steamed rice Hakka Chow Mein Noodles - any variety, we have tried nearly all of them with the most recent being the mixed Hakka (chicken and beef with vegetables). Big portion, enough for 2-3 people. A must to get! Banana Fritter with Ice Cream - this is heavenly, one bite and you will be hooked! Overall, highly recommend Federick's. The prices are reasonable, food is always excellent and consistent and portion sizes are great!
