An interesting spot. I’m not on any particular diet, but I wanted something on the lighter end so I ended up here.
I ordered the Smokey Roots bowl with brown rice (you have the option of cauliflower rice, brown rice, or salad). I also added sautéed broccoli for $1. I enjoyed my $14 meal, and the ingredients tasted fresh. The rice was warmed, the kale, broccoli, and carrot had great flavor. The slight hints of onion, garlic, mint, dill, and mustard offered my taste buds a change in taste. I chose to mix in my dressing (for Smoky Roots, there was no dressing, but rather yogurt) and I think I’ll choose to leave it on top next time, so that by bowl isn’t as “wet.” The portion size was perfect.
While I love a good bowl/salad with a variety in ingredients, I feel that their menu could diversify toward more common ingredients, such as corn, tomatoes, sunflower seeds, green peppers, etc. (but they should keep everything they currently offer).
I am a restaurant server, so I understand supplies run out. However at my visit, three of the bowls were unavailable (there are only 5 on the menu).
I went on a sunny day, and the dining room was very dark despite lots of windows. Not a super welcoming environment. The outside is really nice, being a brick building with wood accents. I sat outside at a nice, bright colored table.
I looked them up on instagram, and there haven’t been any posts for 3 years. However, you can see that the owner had competed on Top Chef, which is pretty cool. Note that this location is 2-in-1 with the TipTop burger place. I appreciate their use of compostable bowls/forks/napkins.
If you’re in the area often, I would recommend giving this place a try, but be ready for a unique flavor profile in their food. Nevertheless, there are many other places to eat that I enjoy more.
