The Best Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in Portland | Eater Portland

"This former pop-up-turned-Killingsworth restaurant is one of Portland’s most compelling vegan restaurants. The menu here changes regularly, sometimes even weekly. Chefs August Winningham and Ryan Koger’s vegetable-laden small plates menu playfully toys with expectations and flavors. On any given day one might find a PBJ cabbage with chile crisp and dekopane marmalade, a dish of Three Sisters Nixtamal masa dumplings in sweet corn sauce, delicata donuts, or maitake steak frites. From the bar find highlights like the Morning Brew, an espresso martini riff with coffee rum and passionfruit cachaca or a mezcal old fashioned." - Anastasia Sloan

16 Essential Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in Portland

"As it settles into its Killingsworth space, this former pop-up is quickly becoming one of Portland’s most compelling vegan restaurants. Small plates like deep fried kimchi with botanical pear “honey” and fennel tartar sauce make prime drinking snacks. Meanwhile, the other half of Feral’s menu consists of chefs August Winningham and Ryan Koger’s vegetable-laden comfort fare, such as hand-rolled noodles with spicy lacto-fermented squash ragu and lemony-savory seitan piccata with chanterelles, hakurei turnips, and cabbage-celeriac puree. Helmed by Soul & Craft’s Kianna Bell, the bar program includes many highlights like the bold rye whiskey based Rich Mahogany that arrives with a sprig of torched rosemary and the tropical Chasing the Sun made with coconut fat-washed cachaca and pineapple rum." - Waz Wu

Enjoyed our dinner experience at Feral. The dishes were well crafted and the flavors are also good for a fully Vegan menu. My personal favorite was the Summer Tartine - the toast was perfectly crisp and topped with a flavorful tofu pâté. The ambiance is pleasant overall though it did feel that the tables were a bit too close together, which made private conversations a bit tricky. That aside, the service staff was excellent. They add a mandatory 20% service charge to the bill. Additional tips are optional. Got to know that their menu changes frequently based on what's in season so there's always something new to look forward to. Parking on the street can be a tight during peak evening hours and weekends but not impossible. One thing that fell short was the lack of any acknowledgement for the birthday we mentioned while booking through Resy. It's a small gesture that can go a long way especially when other restaurants at this price range often go the extra mile to recognize special occasions and some even offer a dessert. Overall still a great spot for some delicious and fully Vegan food. Would definitely recommend making a reservation.

Experience/Environment: Restaurant is dimly lit. Imagine mood lighting. When you first walk in you’re greeted with kind of like a hall and the bar is right in front of you. Main dining room floor is on the other side of the wall. Price: Tapa style. Majority items are 14$ to upper 20s Food: They definitely made eating vegan fun. Mixing flavors you didn’t think would ever go together, garnishing that gave food an added kick. Service: Server came by a couple times. Not too attentive but not terrible. No complaints but no added compliments either lol. NTT [[Next Time Try]]: I’d love to try the pasta. Something hardy. Everything we had were lighter which were pretty good. But I saw a pasta and it looked pretty good. Thank me later ;) Smile, eat, hydrate. Live honest and don’t settle. Hope to see you out there! xo

Have been waiting a year to go here since my schedule never fit (they don't open up a few weekdays). The wait was worth it. All the dishes were incredibly tasty and crafted with care. We had the tartine with tofu pate (amazing), succotash, fried tofu sandwich, and their fettuccine with zucchini cream. Everything was delicious and unique and vegan! We're not vegan but we loved it. Vibe was vintage classy and everyone was mildly dressed up. We reserved ahead of time and also saw a lot of people on dates and some groups of 4 - 6. The wait staff are really friendly as well and explained each dish. I only wish they had more creative desserts and non alcoholic drinks. But we're here for the savory anyways! And we'll need to return to try everything else on the menu

Had a great dinner here. The eggplant Caponata on Toast was my favorite! The flavors were amazing. The creme brulee was my second favorite. Portions, not including dessert, are quite large, especially for two people. I wish the dishes were a bit smaller, or had a small and a large option. I wanted to order more things to try, but didn't want a ton of leftovers, as some of the things don't reheat well. The dining space is cute and has good vibes. Also, the staff was very friendly and attentive.

Google
Overdue review. Best vegan restaurant in Portland in my opinion and as a vegan chef and foodie myself believe Me when I say there is nothing like it. If they have it on the menu still the tofu “chicken” burger is still on my taste buds and I ate there may 2024. The potato pave Amazing. You get the point. The only critique I would have the pasta was a little dense/chewy for my liking. Cannot wait to visit Portland just to go here.

Feral is such a special spot. Every time we have had a meal at Feral, it's been an experience in flavors, textures and just plain deliciousness. I love that the menu is so seasonal. It means something new and creative to try.

Had dinner here and I think I should have gotten more savory dishes than sweet. The fruits were a tad too sweet for me, but it's totally personal preference. Each fruit salad has a savory little kick to it which helped balance it. I do think that the food here is so good you'll forget it's vegan, but I think I still need to dial in my order. Rec: ~2 dishes per person Cantaloupe and strawberries ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I adored the combination: like the red currants and the strawberries - it's just not for me but it's so good you forget it's vegan - I like the savory yuzu sauce as well Peaches and cream ⭐⭐⭐ - loved the hazelnut maca - didn't love the canned peach taste Summer squash fettuccine ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - would be cool if there was a low carb version of this - the pasta was pretty fresh - I loved the kale and chanterelles Lion manes steak ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - my partner gave this a 5/5 - I think this is a 4 for me, there's an after taste I don't love here

Yelp
This is quite likely the best vegan restaurant in Portland! Obon and Mirisata would be right up there as well.. I won't bother naming any others because they don't come close. The dinner we had was just perfect. Our server was kind and informative and the decor is really cute. Hoping weekend service extends to lunch so I can get over there more often but they're still on my short list of places I need to go to any time I get the chance.

Yelp
I came to Feral with a group of friends, we like to check out vegan restaurants on a monthly basis. I was excited to try them out based on what I saw on the menu a friend shared with me, it all looked so amazing! I got to the restaurant a tad late due to traffic being so bad. Normally it takes me half hour to get to this part of town, it took 45 minutes. I couldn't find super close parking, so had to walk a little ways. When I got to the restaurant, I saw my group of friends and headed to the table. I wasn't greeted by the staff. My friends had already started ordering. Wait staff was bringing drinks out to my friends, but didn't ask if I needed anything. So I waved someone over. I got a zero proof cocktail, I think it was the Holly, it was delicious! I ordered a pasta stuffed with maitake mushrooms in a savory broth, because I love maitake mushrooms! Don't get me wrong, I did slurp down every sip of broth and ate every morsel of pasta, well except for the few bites I doled out to friends that wanted to try this dish. It just didn't knock my socks off. Surprisingly, I tried bites of different dishes, and my favorite was the peanut butter and jelly cabbage. I'd go back for that dish alone! That and the zero proof cocktail! I have to say that the restaurant was nicely decorated very much a date night feel to it. Fun place to gather with friends!

Yelp
Feral is a good vegan restaurant with a complex and interesting menu. It has a fancy feel for being in a very small and casual space. Our food was fine, service good, and cocktails were fun.

Yelp
Oh my broken vegan plant based heart. I was BEYOND excited to go to Feral. Plant based, seasonal rotating menu... Sounds familiar in the Portland area. The menu sounds interesting and exciting when we check it out. But that's where the interest ended sadly. The good, which is the two stars for me: the mixologist who crafted the cocktail menu is simply genius. She knows how to curate a cocktail and mix flavors to bring you something unique. That's where unique ended. The bad: our "server," I think, which initially I was confused about as I thought she was working in the bar area, looked a lot like Sophia Bush, with green tips on her hair. She was friendly but not good. We asked for water at least 4 times, the third time which I brought the water bottle TO the bar on my way to the restroom and asked for water. She wasn't attentive. She was nice but that's where the service ended. The food runners did their job. We got food and eventually water. (No stars given.) When we arrived or friends had already ordered MaLa fries. Which were described as "fried russets, spicy numbing Sichuan peppercorn & porcini spice mix, black sesame fry sauce." Now let me first say this. 3/4 people in our group raved on this dish. I did not. Not a huge fan of russets when there are golden potatoes, yellow Potatoes, purple sweet potatoes and more. But let me be CLEAR. NOTHING was spicy or numbing. Nothing. It was okay. The best part of that dish was 1000% the black sesame fry sauce. It had a tartness and acidity to it that was beautiful. Honestly, THIS was the most memorable taste of the evening. Next, we ordered the Leeks Gratin which was described as "leek top sofrito, cheese, preserved lemon, braised leeks, Vtopian aged cheese, crushed and fried walnuts." Now let me say the (what I'd call dip,) dip beneath the leek on top, was nice. But y'all... How do you eat it? It feels like a spinach and artichoke dip. Looks like it. But the flavor just falls flat. As does the texture. The walnuts are more decorative than for taste. Try fried garlic or shallots, flavor. Acid. Texture. Oh Lord it was mush. It needed bread or pita or chips or something to dip into. This isn't a knife and fork dish. Two of us ordered the Hot Tofu Fried Tofu Sandwich. Which is described as "savory jus, brined, battered and fried OTA tofu, hot apple honee, fermented squash, habanero and cabbage slaw, holykraut pickles, served on a house made bun." Now 2/4 of us thought this was good. This to me yet flavor and texture but when I read the description, my mouth waters. I think this sounds SO spicy. This sounds crispy (bun, pickles, cabbage,) and acidic (slaw,) and crunchy (fried tofu.) NO spice. No crisp. No acid. No crunch!!!! How?!?! It was okay. But HOW?!? This could have been fire. Excellent. But it was okay. WHY?!?! I ordered Braised White Beans & Winter Vegetables "julienned kohlrabi, celery root and parsnip tossed in lemon butter and bay vinaigrette, served with charcoal grilled brainfood bread." Now let me take an aside. I'm a super taster and super smeller. I tasted beans. There was a crunch on occasion with what I believe was kohlrabi. I had 0 lemon or parsnip or vinaigrette. The absolute STAR of this fish e was the bread. Which isn't made in house. It was delicious. My friend had the Black Sesame Tagliatelle with Parsley and Wilderess Sauce Verte described as "roasted cauliflower, hazelnut & preserved lemon crumble, shaved aged cheese, green olives." It was green pasta. I saw the sesame seeds and olives. I didn't taste them. I didn't taste hazelnut. It was okay but didn't have anything memorable. Here's the thing. Nothing was memorable. Nothing was excellent. It was all like the chef played it safe. Nothing was GREAT or OUTSTANDING. There is so much opportunity here. Make the dishes stand out. Give the finished dish shine. Don't play it safe. Go big. The vegan and plant based community here has a lot of offerings if Feral is going to last, it needs to give us something unique. And playing it safe won't do that. I love the decor, the set up, the vibe, their social media. But I didn't love the food.

Yelp
Came here for a birthday and I was totally impressed with this restaurant! Very small cute space, I loved the cute table scapes as well. Wasn't feeling like drinking but they had such a good non alcoholic cocktail menu and we had several of them and I loved everyone I tried. I really like when restaurants put actual effort into their mocktails like these. We loved everything we had to eat here except for one thing. Our server was very nice but seemed a little busy and service was a little slow.

Yelp
I'm not vegan, but our son and best friend are, so we went to their favorite restaurant. My take: meat is not necessary to make a great meal! We were totally captivated by their menu and ambience. The craft cocktails and mocktails are outstanding and beautiful! The plated dishes are small enough to order several and share, which is what we did. I must say that if you read the detailed description of the dishes on the menu, you can expect those flavors to present themselves in the dish. I really can't say what was my favorite of the 8 entrees we ordered that night, because they were all dynamic, and since the menu is always changing, I can't recommend any specific dish, but if anything involves lions mane mushroom, grab it! The staff treats you like you are family, and everyone is active to make the dinning experience great. Again, I'm not vegan, but this place is one of my must stops next time in Portland.

Yelp
My first vegan restaurant and it certainly did not disappoint! I had the house-made Fettuccine with eggplant cream and it was a really large portion and absolutely delicious! The crème brûlée was also fabulous and very unusual, a more liquid version than I've ever had with local berries. The service was good too, a definite winner!

Yelp
Phenomenal food! Excellent customer service and great Zero proof cocktails! Perfect interior! Will definitely be returning and bringing friends and family! : )

Lindsey W.

Yelp
Everything we ate was YUMMY but not satisfying. Was a bit of a vegan stereotype, in that way. We ordered 3 dishes between my partner and i and we were still very hungry by the end. Again, the dishes were creative and my god the lions mane was INCREDIBLE. But we would have loved any dessert ( no dessert menu yet ) because we were so goddamn hungry at the end. Won't be coming back for that reason Service was fine, not great.

Yelp
Wow so good! I could eat here everyday forever. My partner does not care for cabbage but tried the cabbage dish here and said "this Is the best thing I've ever eaten". Seriously.

Krista C.

Yelp
Took a party of six (we're trying new vegan restaurants as a group each month) to Feral - it was soooo good. The Lion's mane cordon bleu was a hit with everyone and big enough to share. The fried kimchi tasted like fish and chips to me (even though it's vegan), the batter was just perfect. The fried tofu was delicious, the peanut butter jelly cabbage was the only dish that didn't "wow" me but was still good, and was a fav of someone else in our group. Everyone was happy with the food - definitely up there in terms of the list of great vegan restaurants in Portland - give them a try for sure!

Samantha K.

Yelp
Fun vegan food! Enjoyed eating here with friends and trying the unique dishes. Would recommend!

Yelp
Great balance of expeditious service and friendly staff, all of which is complemented so nicely by the calm atmosphere of the space. On street parking is always easy to find. Inventive and (dare I say) holistic menu is such a nice change of pace from all the vegan spots that just lean on new-school fake meat products, the steakhouse sandwich with miatake mushrooms was so good! Would love to see that as a permanent menu item if it isn't already. This is our new favorite restaurant we will be back!
