"Field & Main is a farm-fresh menu that changes weekly based on the season. It’s also destination dining whether you want to celebrate a special occasion or join friends for an impromptu meal at one of several outdoor cabanas. And when you’re here you feel like family." - Tim Ebner

We love Field & Main for special occasions. We've been in the restaurant as well as the outside cabanas; we've ordered a la carte and done the present menu, and have had great experiences throughout. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. The service is excellent. When we have issues, they're quickly addressed. We're always happy when we leave Field & Main.

I visited the Field & Main Restaurant and I absolutely enjoyed the food as well as the ambiance. I think the food was well-seasoned so that everyone could enjoy the beautiful dishes. Our server was polite and we received our food in a timely fashion.

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at this restaurant last night, like we always do each year. We haven’t been disappointed. Everyone was pleasantly courteous; especially Neal. Super nice gentleman with a nice smile each time he approached our table. We will continue being their patrons. Two thumbs all the way up!

My husband arranged this special dinner as a mini-celebration after our recent wedding, and it exceeded our expectations. We were fortunate to sit at the chef's counter , which gave us a front-row view of the kitchen in action. Watching the chefs at work added a unique and engaging element to our dining experience. The tasting menu offered a well-rounded selection of flavors, and if you appreciate wine then the pairing is highly recommended! Though it's hard to choose, the duck dish was the standout for me--perfectly cooked and delicious. Service was not only fast but also highly attentive. We had a great conversation with our server, who was personable and knowledgeable, adding a warm touch to our special dinner. We left with plans to definitely come back for another time.

My boyfriend surprised me with reservations here for dinner one night. We sat the counter and were able to talk to the chefs and watch the food be prepared. It was a great experience with great food and drinks. The cocktails were great and reasonably priced and the menu was also phenomenal and reasonably priced. This is definitely a place you want to make a trip for.

Absolutely incredible anniversary experience!! The Chef's Counter is a wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion. Everything was beyond expectations.

Google
Wowee! I've heard glowing reviews and am happy to add mine! I love the little private dining cabanas for ambiance and a quiet dining experience. The service was phenomenal - the server clearly knew and loved the menu and was able to provide great and detailed recommendations. My favorites from the meal were the asparagus appetizer with poblano (the sauce!!) and the hearth roasted carrot with carrot hummus (easily the best carrot dish I've had in my life). Great place to celebrate an anniversary, birthday, or to simply get a fresh, creative and absolutely delicious meal!

Google
The first time we dined here it was great the food was fantastic and the menu seemed to have a lot to offer. We came back two weeks ago on a Sunday and the menu seemed to be half the size. Not sure if that's because they are closed for the next three days but it did seem rather limiting. I still absolutely would recommend this place, the food is fantastic and you can tell the chefs take pride in what they do.

Yelp
I chose the chef's counter experience at Field & Main to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we were blown away by the meal and wine pairings. Each wine carefully balanced the flavors of the meal and brought out the flavors of both the ingredients in the dish and the wine. Our server was so knowledgeable and just as excited about the food and wine as we were. At the end of our meal when we thanked the chef for the amazing meal, he shared his thoughts on our favorite courses...the continuous evolution of the duck entree until it was just right with the wonderful berry jus, how he transformed the strawberries to add umami flavor to the dish...it made me appreciate the meal even more as not only a form of art but thoughtful care. That thoughtful care was a common thread throughout the whole restaurant from the hospitality of the staff to the ambiance and of course the five-course meal. Loved it!

Yelp
Great meal and evening celebration!! Food was very good, as were local wines but what made the evening was the service. The restaurant is an old quaint home well decorated and not over crowded. Easy to have conversation at a normal volume. Menu had options for all from vegan to bison. Again service is what stood out most. Our waitress was kind and caring. The kitchen brought us out a special dessert and came to say high and congratulate my fiancé and I celebrating our engagement. I will happily return when in the area and recommend to all.

Yelp
Got the burgers to go and had to wait 35 minutes before we could eat. Even then, one of the best burgers of my life.

Yelp
What an outstanding restaurant away from the northern Virginia craziness! Located on the Main Street in Marshall, VA you'll get a wonderful menu of locally sourced food. The menu items were delicious. They offer local wine and wonderful craft cocktails. The I'm Perfect was perfect!! The noise level is average the ambiance is quaint with some different options in room seating. They seem to have outdoor dining options for when the weather allows. Service was attentive and very knowledgeable. Just a really great fun experience with delicious food. Parking on the side or on street.

Yelp
As a family with a toddler, this place makes it possible to have a great meal without worrying about disturbing others who are on special dates or out trying to have a quiet dinner. You can simply reserve one of the cabanas, and have a worry free dinner. The food is great, and the service is fantastic. The only knock I have is that for what you pay, the serving sizes can be a little on the small size. I get that this mirrors many places you could eat in DC or elsewhere, but being that it's in Marshall VA and is not crushed by constant crowds, I think it's great. Food was well prepared and presented, and the flavors/ingredients were on point. I would definitely recommend stopping in for a special occasion or celebration, and would encourage tired parents to rent a cabana and treat yourself.

Yelp
Spectacular American luxe farm-to-table vibe. My date and I were very impressed. It was about 25 minutes from our resort in Middleburg. wetried the tasting menu, which was around seven courses. Loved the unique design and especially the open-air kitchen. Not the most family-friendly (on the inside, it does look like they may have cabanas for larger groups, though) Fantastic service, excellent taste! 10/10 for a good date night!

Yelp
Wonderful experience! Asked to be reseated (personal preference, not any issue with the location) and although they were booked, they accomodated us without any fuss. The service was first rate, as was the food. The bread and accompanying toppings were delicious. My salad and Fussili pasta were excellent as was my dining companion's trout. Highly recommend, we will be back.

Yelp
As you can see from my prior reviews this is one of my favorite restaurants for dinner especially when we can reserve their largest cabana for my family of seven including two young children. Their largest cabana is the last cabana down the walkway with their parking lot behind the rear of the cabana. We had this largest cabana the last time we visited in December when it was very cold. The weather was quite nice when we visited here, therefore the cabana experience was again very nice. They made some improvements to the cabana. We had a 5:00 dinner reservation. I started with and enjoyed my usual two red lanterns for $14 each or $28 total. We shared and enjoyed their bread board for $12. I also enjoyed their spicy miso ramen with caramelized pork, shiitake mushrooms, cilantro, scallions, crispy tofu, bok choy and egg for $25. We also shared a bottle of Boxwood Trellis 2020 red wine for $59. My total bill was $445 excluding gratuity. Crystal M. was our excellent professional server. Her knowledge of all of the menu items was above average. Crystal M. was one of our best mature servers here recently. I highly recommend Crystal M. If I owned a restaurant I would hire Crystal M. for more than just a server. We will continue to return here for dinner especially if we can request Crystal M. to serve our cabana.

Yelp
We came here for my 28th bday dinner! I had heard great things from coworkers who love this local gem! Reservations are a hot commodity and it seems this location is only open Thursday- Sunday for dinner. Menu is printed daily with some selections that stay on the menu and other new creations. The chefs are young and true visionaries!!!! We met one in passing and when I looked at the menu I was pleasantly surprised at some flavor profiles I hadn't seen or tried before (like fresh apples and mussels??? VERY good) The sign out front is beautiful but you need to park in the back and walk in through the back. Seems some road work was being conducted the night we went. The hostess was pleasant but I have to say our server was not the most welcoming. Some offhanded comments didn't sit well with me, but the food made up for it. While we waited for our food a kind server came in with an appetizer of a cold gazpacho to try! They have some elevated details like little towel "pellets" to drop in hot water to create a hot hand towel. Also- since it was my birthday we got to sample a rose wine :) Our meal was to die for. We ordered a LOT! I had to try it all!!! We ordered the white wine and apple steamed mussels (I literally wanted to drink the sauce), we ordered a mini burger (really wasn't mini and looked pretty boring but my boyfriend described it as the best burger he's ever had- wagyu beef with perfect fatty ratio and a bacon jam that knocked his socks off) honestly both of these appetizers prob would be filling enough....if you weren't a foodie like me We also ordered the corn bread pudding for the table. I've never tried anything like it, very moist and full of tender sweet corn. For our entrees, I ordered a cashew crusted black bass with Jerusalem artichokes (they call them sunchokes) I've never had a sun choke but it was pretty good, kind of like a potato artichoke heart hybrid in texture. The fish was flaky and cooked to perfection. The crusting was perfectly executed. The sauce was amazing. My boyfriend ordered the bison steak with farrow and collard greens. Everything about that entree was BEYOND incredible. He also ordered a side crab cake that was full of lump meat and seasoned very well. This experience was one I will never forget. I have referred friends here for thier special events. I noticed it was doggie friendly :) the outdoor cabanas were a cool concept for privacy. I liked the barn doors. It was great they were heated for a chilly evening meal. However, the table and the chairs did not meet the elevated standard, seemed like regular outdoor furniture when everything else was top notch. Slight miss in the furniture. Worth the experience or a cozy date night but beware the $$$! Certainly worth a try and my hats off for the chef!!!!

Yelp
I've heard about Field and Main for a while now, always good things. So we thought while we were out in the area, we would stop by. The area is cute, and the restaurant is small but quaint. The kitchen is also small but worked very well together. We sat at the chef counter and had an amazing time. We walked in and were quickly escorted to the counter - we were the only ones at the counter as well. Our server was amazing and did an excellent job taking care of us. The food was amazing. Each dish was unique and had interesting flavors, and worked well. I did the wine pairing, and it worked very well together. I highly recommend stopping by or driving out if you're in NoVa for a dinner - and do that tasting menu, but we did watch other food being made and it all looked good so even if you don't do the tasting menu, there doesn't seem to be any bad choices!

Yelp
One of my favorite places! Their cocktails are always perfectly balanced and dangerously good. As a vegetarian, I'm always pleased with their options. They've been able to modify some of the appetizers as well, and I always appreciate that. On our recent visit, we had some grilled asparagus with mole verde, fried Brussel sprouts as our appetizers. For mains, I had cauliflower with sunchoke hummus and it was sooooo good. Perfectly roasted and filling. My husband had Vadouvan curried chicken confit and he raved about it. They gave us a scoop of their homemade blueberry ice cream and it was insanely good. We love the private cabanas and the ambiance and can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Abe was cool & the burger was good but neither of those were SO UNBELIEVABLY good that I will EVER return. Upon entering, the host seats us at the bar & it's just us so we sit as close to what we believe to be the edge of the bar as possible so that other patrons can be seated as necessary. (I've worked in the service industry since I was 14 so, I understand bar seating). I did not feel welcome by the host nor was the restaurant so packed out while we dined; hence, my brain is still spinning as to why we were treated with such disdain. I tried to brush it off but as time passed the meal simply got worse and worse. Abe, the bartender was pleasant, knowledgeable and excited to share the good news of his place of business; yet, this random woman couldn't care less about the time and professionalism that Abe had exuded. We were served drinks and an older gentleman joined us at the bar at the other end. We then had appetizers, and yet another single lady joined us at the bar, she sat next to the older guy. Our entrees were brought out and we started eating and tasting each others food as we were curious and got as much as we could to get a good feel for the place. Unbeknownst to us, a RANDOM WOMAN enters, she approaches me, leans into my personal space and says "dare I be so bold to ask you to move down a few chairs so that these two can get in at the bar??" MIND YOU, we're EATING, forks in hand, bland food in mouth, the works!! We move down despite full irritation & so now I'm sitting on the corner of the bar (like I can now see the bar's sink & all Abe's bar happenings) and the two new patrons plop down beside single lady who is seated by single guy. At this point, I am livid and I begin finishing my food at record speed (because... am I being punked right now?) but to add insult to injury, the patrons were simply waiting on their table and wanted drinks. YEA, you heard me right-- WAITING ON THEIR TABLE, JUST GETTING DRINKS!! IDK who raised you three individuals but let me teach you something about hospitality: 1. Move the people that aren't EATING (recall single lady seated by single guy... yea, not eating). 2. Move the people that aren't sitting together (please refer to hospitality point 1). 3. Drinks can be served on the ceiling (aka any place), seated/eating patrons should not be shifted, PERIOD!! BUT also, NEVER for a drink ticket. 4. Don't approach eating individuals, get in their personal space and breathe on their plate to satisfy your inconsiderate way of micromanaging the bar. 5. If I were said patrons, I would have ordered drinks from the corner bar seat or the center seat, not move others that are in the midst of dinner. ANNNNND 6. Don't you ever try me, TRY JESUS!! We initially decided to try all the things (drinks-desserts) but we ate our food and departed. The ticket could have been more but you chose to manage bar seats without consideration or professionalism & lost customers + all the wonderful people we know and work with not too far from the area. Instead of making it about us customers (cause why else are you here?), you made it about yourself. You saw a beautiful woman of color (only person of color there) with a handsome white man having a meal at the bar and you felt the need to show everyone there that you didn't care about who we were as humans, and that you had some semblance of power. Well, my darling, you got it. Stay well, please season your meats better, learn the ins & outs of customer service & be blessed!! p.s. I TOOK PICS BUT I DELETED THEM WHEN YOU DECIDED TO MOVE EATING PATRONS.

Yelp
What an experience. Really top notch food and service. This was my first visit to Field and Main and it was truly outstanding. My waiter was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about this farm to table cuisine. I went with the set menu but skipped the wine pairings in favor of the cocktails. Courses were timed perfectly, and the arrival of fresh flatware built my anticipation for each course. Food was dynamite cocktails well balanced. I even added another a la carte salad after my meal because I couldn't resist.

Yelp
Fantastic! This is my second visit to F&M. I reserved one of the cabanas so that our party could have a private dinner. We started with cocktails, I had the Left of Center which is a mezcal base with green chartreuse it was perfectly balanced. We ordered the hearth bread plate, the carrots, ceviche, fried brussel sprouts and the oomami burger split in four. The carrots and the Oomami were the stars. The flavor of the burger was incredible! For the entrees, we had the beef tenderloin, bison and the ladies had the scallops. It was silent for the first 4 minutes while everyone's first through fourth bites were bliss. The bison that I had cooked at medium rare was juicy and smoky. The broccoli was charred and smoked to perfection, the potatoes were just perfect (see pic). My wife had the scallops that were accompanied by a charred kale with some type of sweet potato purée that was cooked in beef fat, woah was it tasty! We added the corn bread pudding and potatoes with pimento as sides which the winner goes to the cream corn bread pudding. For dessert, we had the mousse (my favorite) the apple crisp and the cookie that's not a cookie with homemade marshmallow(2nd favorite). What I love about the restaurant is that while the star of each plate definitely is the star, the accompanying food all tastes as if they can be the stars as well. Then the combination together is like heaven in a bite. My guests really never had a meal like this and has vowed to be a part of the culinary journey. He was blown away. Is it a bit of a drive, sort of but from Herndon it's only 35 minutes which beats DC, the prices beat DC, and I love that I feel very safe walking around the small town afterwards. Truly, all of you reading this need to try.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere, good service, lousy food. My wife and I were very disappointed since we were celebrating an anniversary and were looking forward to a great meal. The pasta with crabmeat was the saltiest dish I have ever been served and I should have sent it back. Very little crabmeat and it all sat in a soup of butter and salt. Terrible! My wife had the mushroom steak which was tough and tasteless, except for the salt. This place was very good at one time, but no longer.

Alexandra C.

Yelp
Food is always fresh and drinks are always prepared with consistency . Staff is always friendly and pleasant and ready to answer any questions about their concept, dishes or drinks! The atmosphere is quaint and a very lovely spot to dine.

Yelp
This post is strictly for takeout. After reading reviews of how good their Wagyu burgers were I had to try it. I NEVER order a burger when eating out because 10/10 times I will prefer my own burger that I make at home on the grill. This one was good. Would I drive 30 min to pick it up and eat it? No. Would I recommend it if you also have heard about it and want to test it out? Sure- go for it. You won't know until till you try it yourself. The cornbread pudding- everyone in the family agreed- No Bueno. It has like a weird aftertaste to it. Is there sour cream in it? Not sure what it is but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Would definitely not recommend this. Try something else. Best of luck. I'm sure the other finer dishes in the menu for the sit down meals are better....(?) Also- wanted to update this review to add that the burger was really salty!! Watch out! Please read all the 3 star reviews posted here. I agree with all of them!!!!!

Yelp
Of all recent restaurant experiences, Field & Main elicited the most diverse assessments from my dining party trio. I thought it was delicious, upscale, a little snooty but beautiful. My wife thought the food was too bland, too pretentious, and came away unimpressed. The middle-schooler liked her meatloaf entree but was completely skeeved out by the natural vegetable drinks. I started the meal with "craft cocktail" a pricey drink but one I will remember enjoying for years. (Sad to say I didn't note the name, but I think it was Zea Mays Harvest?) My dining companions got lemonades. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our drinks, especially after enduring the traffic out on I-66 that diverted us back into this little town in the first place. We were seated in a little one-table dining house set up for all-season dining, with a roof and windows and a heater. As with the food itself, this novel idea--possibly set up in response to something else that's novel, coronavirus--struck the three of us differently. I'll go with order of preference, like the fable: For mama bear, the setting was too remote and difficult to summon service, for Goldilocks-the-7th-grader, it was ok but nothing remarkable, but for papa bear (me), it was a delightful and private experience, and I found the service to be attentive, so I was happy. I also ordered a carrot juice. The intended recipient found it to be "planty and rotten smelling" like "v8 strained with out tomato". (Ah, to be 13 again.) I liked it. I can't give this place a unanimous recommendation from our little group, but it gets one from me. I see that the quality of cuisine coming out of the kitchen, the decor, and the menu fit right into the quaint and delightful vibes one finds in small towns within Washington DC's orbit of prosperity, places that bear little resemblance to the boarded-up and abandoned town centers further out on the map.

Yelp
Food was not what was expected. Scallops appeared to look like the pan was burnt and they were scraped from the bottom. They did not have a desirable taste and had a strong fishy oder When our party arrived at our reservation time the hostess was not welcoming in any way. Not a smile or a hello at all. She took our name and seated us. The server was not much better. She seemed bothered at our questions about the menu which we had since it was our first time there. We will NOT be returning or recommending to anyone

Jim K.

Yelp
This is the best food I have ever had at a restaurant. We got the tasting menu and the wine flight. While it isn't cheap, it is amazing and worth it. I've been all over the country trying the best restaurants in Hawaii and Florida and New York and Washington. This is the best hands down. Service and ambiance is also amazing. A great place for a special occasion.

The ambiance, bathed in warm, inviting lighting and adorned with tasteful décor, exuded an air of refined elegance. Yelp
I have been hearing about Field & Main for the longest time, and its reputation is warranted! One of the most creative meals I've had in Virginia by far. We came for dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant is located in a charming house with outdoor seating available. Parking was a little difficult to find, especially at night, but there was ample space behind neighboring buildings. We ended up eating inside, and it felt like being in a cozy living room. Even though there are separate rooms, it could be quite loud at times due to multiple birthday celebrations that took place. The service was accommodating and enthusiastic. My party opted for the a la carte menu, ordering the bison tartare for our appetizer, duck and bison entrees for our main course, and ending our meal with the feast chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Everything was cooked to perfection and plated beautifully. The duck leg had an amazing crispy skin and the bison was oh so tender. The cookie was massive and super decadent. The entrees especially were very creative. However, the duck dish was less cohesive than the others, as the peanut sauce completely overpowered the dish, and the pear did not add much to the flavor profile. My first visit was certainly worth the trek, and if I am ever nearby again, I would definitely stop by!

Yelp
Amazing!! We had the chefs menu and loved every minute. Great cocktail selection. Waiters and chefs were super friendly. Right in downtown Marshall, cute building. We sat at the bar facing the kitchen and loved every second.

Yelp
We flat out love Field and Main indoors, outside, or via take out. Great for dinner and weekend brunch. They make some of the best biscuits around. Our latest experience started with the mixed local greens salad with Lindera Farm honey vinaigrette, shaved carrots & sunflower seeds. Super tasty, especially the vinaigrette where there honey adds flavor and takes some of the edge off the vinegar without making it sweet. My wife went with the duck confit leg with crispy polenta and a blueberry-arugula pesto. The duck was cooked perfectly with a crispy skin and fat rendered into the meat to make it juicy. The polenta was a perfect side and the pesto was amazing. I ordered the grilled pork chop with roasted turnips, garlic scapes & spring onion chimichurri. Note F&M uses a wood fire hearth and that smokiness came through nicely in this dish. Ended with the Feast chocolate chip cookie with chocolate sauce, a house made marshmallow, and vanilla ice cream. The was a feast - the size of this dessert really would be perfect for two. They have a great wine list including several Virginia favorites like Hodder Hill from Glen Manor and Liden's Hardscrabble. Services has always been excellent to the next level because of the knowledge and passion of the staff there. Yelp
Oh wow!! what a place. Amazing food , excellent drinks and very prompt service. Highly recommended for special occasions. Beautiful ambience as well

Yelp
I must be the only guy on the planet that was not impressed with this place. We went to dinner with two of our friends on Friday, December 1, and , I must say, I was not impressed. We all had different dishes and none were happy with any of those. I ordered the trout and it was cold. Sent it back to the kitchen and it still came back cold. Cabbage was overcooked and the sauce should have stayed in France. Only good dish was the potatoes confit. Very overpriced and marginal service. I came away with this opinion: avoid this place on Friday night. Jeff Corry Bluffton, SC

Yelp
This review is way overdue! I've been drafting it since October! We are in the outdoor cabanas for our anniversary. It was truly magical! We decided to opt for the present menu (79 per person). It's constantly rotating with the seasons, and by that, I mean it rotates to the point that we got a special paw paw ice cream from a tree that's only in season one week a year! Back then, the cabanas were open air, but it looks like since then, they have further finished them so that they could accommodate guests in the winter. Their ability to pivot through the pandemic and continue offering a fantastic menu is truly inspiring. The staff knows this food inside and out. They are truly passionate about what they do, and they did an amazing job accommodating for dietary restrictions. The menu items are completely creative and one of a kind. With the present menu, you'll never face exactly the same experience twice, because they are only serving the freshest ingredients that they can get from local farms. Next time we will definitely spring for the wine pairing, too!

We went on a Sunday with our two children and were sat outside on the front porch instead of the many private huts encased by glass behind it. At least three other tables of adult group were already sat next to us. A private hut would have been better for everyone. We ordered the wine pairing 5 course meal and shrimp from the kids menu for both girls. The cost was $15 per kid for 5 shrimp and a side, which seemed reasonable and they even let me sub a side when my kid wasn't happy about the crispy potatoes that accompanied all 4 kid choices. The first glass of wine was a quarter pour and took about 20 minutes to arrive. The kids meal arrived after the second pour, about 2oz, which I had to ask for, about another 15-20 min later. Then our compressed water mellon came out with 6 tiny watermelon, some sprouts and sprinkled feta, but no more wine till the next course which was another 15 minutes away. After the 2nd course of a slice of tomato and fruit, the tiny pours kept up with the next 3 tiny portions. Our main course was an over cooked 3oz slice of duck. When I asked for a pour comparable to the larger meal, I was told, "well, we want you to be able to drive home." By the underaged server. The meal for two kids and two adults with no extras was $500, which was super disappointing considering we spent most of the 2.5 hours hungry , thirsty, insulted and getting eaten alive by mosquitos and while trying desperately, to keep our kids from embarrassing with their overt boredom.

Yelp
We dined at Field & Mian last Friday. When making my reservation I noted that we would be celebrating our anniversary. It would have been nice to have this acknowledged. Perhaps they missed my note? In any event, we both tried the 'Mystery Wine; challenge: you pick either a red or white and guess the varietal. If you guess correctly, you get 1/2 off the glass. We really didn't care if we got it right or got a glass at a discount. The idea was fun and we were game. Neither one of us guessed correctly; however, the white wine was a Portuguese wine I had never had before. I've tasted lots of wine varietals over the years, but this one was new to me. Here is this lost opportunity on Field and Main's part: okay, I got it wrong. Yet, how about bringing me the bottle or giving me notes about the varietal? That way I learn something from the experience, and they get to highlight the wine they serve. Just a suggestion. We started with the Hearth Baked Bread -- the spread was interesting: carnalized onion with goat cheese, apples, and cashews. Maybe it is a hit with other diners. It was a miss for us. For entrees I chose the barbeque pork with grits and collard greens. The barbeque was overwhelming -- way too sweet for my taste. Maybe it comes from over a decade living in the Carolinas and appreciating that style; though the sides were great, but the main dish: not so much. Plus, my dish was served lukewarm. Finally, I did order a second glass of wine. It never came. Our server started out strong but was giving us the 'going through the motions' treatment after delivering our food. After reading so many glowing reviews for years, it was a disappointment. It's pricey -- and that is fine if you feel it was worth it. In this case, it really wasn't.

Yelp
Attention, fellow diners! I feel compelled to share my recent experience at Field & Main. Sadly, I must say that my encounter with the restaurant host left much to be desired. During my visit, we were asked by the host to move down two seats at the bar for someone who was merely waiting for a table and only wanted drinks. This situation struck me as highly unprofessional and quite inconvenient. As paying customers who were already seated, we should have been treated with more respect and consideration. I must mention that Abe, the bartender, was truly exceptional and significantly contributed to making the first half of the experience enjoyable. Unfortunately, things turned for the worse when the host's actions negatively impacted the rest of the experience. The lack of clear communication and the disregard for our dining experience left a sour taste in my mouth. It's disheartening to see a restaurant overlook the importance of professionalism and customer service. I hope that by sharing my review, the management at Field & Main takes note and addresses these issues. As patrons, we deserve better treatment and a dining experience that values our satisfaction. I encourage others to consider their options before dining at Field & Main. Let's support establishments that prioritize professionalism and provide excellent customer service.

Yelp
I have been wanting to go to Field & Main for a while now, but just never felt like making the trip out to Marshall to try it. Finally got to go for my birthday dinner. It's located in a small town and the restaurant itself is very charming. The dining areas are divided into small rooms so it feels very homey. The decor is simple, but gives off an intimate vibe. We were seated in the kitchen area and it was nice to see the dishes being prepared. They do have private cabanas located outside, but they were all booked up when we went. We started off with some appetizers to share. Was not impressed with the bread and butter, but the brussels sprouts dish was so yummy. For our entrees, we got the scallops and the duck. The presentation of the dishes were fancy and all ingredients were fresh. We opted not to get dessert, but I did have the hot chocolate which was so good!

Yelp
This restaurant was the best meal on my recent trip to Virginia. The service was great and the menu farm to table with an eclectic lean. To start I had the parsnip soup with coconut milk which was a little thin but really fresh vibrant flavors. For mains I split the Shrimp Po Boy and shrimp and grits with my fella. I really liked the shrimp and grits and would definitely recommend ordering that; my boyfriend also really liked it. The Po Boy on the other hand was a split decision. My boyfriend really liked it. I didn't really care for the sandwich or the side of quinoa salad it was served with. Even with that dish being a miss for me, I still recommend eating here and would be back again if in the area.

Yelp
The ambiance is nice, but the food and service was questionable. The food took forever to come out and when asking for something specific they would forget. The food was not good at all, the kabob was tough and chewy and it's supposed to be wagyu meat, more like horse meat. The food is average and doesn't match the price. I drove more than half an hour to get here and the food was mid.. the only thing you'll get here is some nice pictures in their garden.

Yelp
I've been visiting here for years and I'm shocked I haven't reviewed them yet. If I could give them a 5 star review every year for most of the past decade, I would. It's a great location in the middle of Virginia's wine country, which is usually when I'm in the area. Lunch or dinner it doesn't matter, I've consistently had great meals here. Once COVID started I moved to pick up orders. My go-to was their Oomami burger, which I've affectionately called a 'crack' burger because it's so delicious. I once placed an order on the phone calling it that, and someone who overheard me gave me funny looks before she insisted I tell her where she could get one herself. They very recently put up outdoor cabanas, which look nice although I haven't tried them myself. But maybe my favorite thing is they do a weekly blind wine tasting. You pick up the bottles (they don't ship) and usually their owner does a Facebook Live event where he and a group of largely local wine aficionados are walked thru his deductive process. I'm not very good, but I'm consistently impressed by how Neal consistently nails it. Speaking of Neal, he and his team are super friendly! I really love this place. One of my favorite dining experiences in NOVA.

Yelp
We have dined at Field and Main too many times to count over the years, and the experience has always been amazing. Chef and co-owner Neal creates an incredible culinary journey every time. I recently booked a surprise birthday party/group dinner for 10 in a private cabana. Having worked in the hospitality industry I have a strong POV when it comes to planning events. The GM Julie was wonderful to work with throughout the process. We did the tasting menu, and added on additional courses and a customized, upgraded wine pairing for each as well. I added a special birthday cake prepared by the pastry chef too. Each. And. Every. Course. Was. Amazing! Our entire party loved it - especially the guest of honor. Service was top notch to match the food and wine. We can't wait to go back again!

Yelp
Divine - we had a great experience and family time at Field & Main. The service was 5 and food was 5 s. We shared the Parker House Rolls (ate too fast so no pic) and loaded potatoes w/sour cream on the side. These are crispy on the outside and fluffy on inside. Our daughter knocked out the Shrimp and Grits. Grits were perfectly creamy with juicy shrimp. Husband had The Pork Ramen with a broth that he wished he could swim in. The veggies were perfectly cooked. Wife had the Smash Burger. She would venture to say the best burger ever. (and maybe another order of loaded potatoes) If you haven't gone - take a chance I promise it is worth it.

Yelp
Food and cabanas were excellent. The salad was superb. The gnocchi with Italian sausage was beyond good. Kyle was knowledgeable and attentive and had a nice positive attitude. Will be back.

Yelp
3.5 stars for an odd experience that was saved by excellent food. My wife and I went out to visit a Virginia farm recently and decided to stop by Field & Main (note: this was during the COVID pandemic). Located on Main Street in Marshall, this venue is a former Washingtonian Top 100 spot that is owned by the nearby Ashby Inn. The venue has lots of outside seating that is right next to its own small private parking lot, but all those spots were taken when we made reservations the night before, so we proceeded to sit at an inside table. The venue has several levels and ranges from a standard restaurant look on the first level to the more 1800s classic look on the second level where we ate near the kitchen. Something that was kind of tough about where we sat was the AC units were absolutely blasting, which was a little hard to sit in for an hour when I had on a polo and shorts for our summer day. After taking a seat at our table, trying out the fun water-activated hand towels, and speaking with another fabulous waiter who was helping the table next to us, our waitress came over to say hello and hand us menus. This waitress wasn't bad per se, but you could tell she was relatively new. She annoyed my wife several times both in terms of an inability to answer questions about options on the menu and pouring her a sample pour of her $13 glass of wine rather than a full glass (which looked especially small compared to my beer). All of the issues to that point (plus the fact that the venue no longer carries its famous buffalo pig ears or at least did not for lunch) was making for a not very fun meal. Fortunately, what saved the day here was the food. We ordered the Ooomami Smash Burger and the sirloin steak with a side of beet and quinoa salad. Both the burger and steak were absolutely delicious, with the former being just as good as any burger you would find in DC and the latter being some of the most tender steak around. My wife was still pretty upset as we were finishing our meal, but we talked about the food being both delicious and relatively inexpensive and determined that it was just one of those unlucky visits. Overall, Field & Main has the components for a 5 star meal experience. Eating outside with the server we met on the way in combined with the venue's excellent food would make for a great meal and is enough for us to be willing to give it another try if we are in the area in the future.

Yelp
Whoever is making the desserts needs a raise. Ditto for whoever is making the sauces. The peaches and cream pound cake is outstanding. All of the sauces on the dishes were great. Whoever is seasoning vegetables and meats and operating the grill needs to be fired immediately. I don't enjoy the salty over charred ruins of food. If it's the same person as the sauce guy I don't see how that's possible. Poor sauce guy makes all these delicate flavorful sauces and then someone goes and ruins all the protein and veg to the point you can't even taste it. The waitress had a certain snootiness that was uncalled for given the lower caliber of food and limited wine selection. Goes with the territory I guess. Edit: forgot how sandy the asparagus was. Deducting another star as washing vegetables is pretty basic.

Yelp
Always great food and service. The wine list is fantastic for the food options. Definitely Get a reservation no matter what night you plane to go

Yelp
We were excited to visit. The food was 5-stars, but the service was only 3-stars. First, the good stuff...when we arrived for our reservation, the place was crowded. But, we were immediately greeted and taken to our table; a nice spot along a wall, with a great view of the open kitchen. Not only was this a pleasant surprise -- we typically enjoy watching staff prepare dishes in fine dining establishments -- it also turned out to be a benefit to understanding the service issues we experienced later. In general, we felt the restaurant was stylishly casual, with dining divided between several small rooms, creating a fairly intimate experience and helping keep down noise and traffic near the tables. After only a few minutes at our table we were greeted by our waiter. He had a casual, easy manner that felt right for the vibe of the place. And, throughout the evening, he remained the same. In addition to our waiter, we interacted with several runners through the evening who delivered and described plates for the various courses. All were pleasant and spoke confidently. We opted to start with a round of cocktails, the Flora Rosa and the Sunny Disposition. Both were flavorful with a nice craft vibe. For our meals we chose the Presents menu (chef's tasting) accompanied by the wine pairings. The first course, Trout Rillette, was a very nice craft riff on tuna salad. The second course, Chicken of the Woods "Tenders", was a less interesting craft riff, this time on chicken tenders. The third course was a wonderful Honeynut Squash stuffed with Barley Risotto. The fourth, and final cooked course, was Duck Breast with Potato Rosti and a Concord Grape Sauce. The duck was presented rare and well seasoned, but without any sign of a sear. This may have been purposeful, but it left the duck feeling a bit one dimensional for us. The grape sauce was a winner...a distinct concord grape flavor up front, with a comfortable depth and heft to stand with the duck. The final course was desert; Fig Leaf Ice Cream with Fig Jam and Fresh Figs. This too was a winner. As mentioned earlier, we opted for the wine pairings for our meal. We were very happy we did. Each paired well with its plate, and we appreciated the inclusion of a local vintner for one of the courses. A final note about the food. Each dish was aesthetically plated (except the "tenders" which arrived in a basket), and delivered to our table quickly from the kitchen (we were able to watch our dishes being crafted, inspected, and then nearly immediately picked up by runners). Now for the not as good...the service. While our waiter seemed happy to answer questions, if he didn't have an answer, he made no attempt to find one out. This happened several times during our meal. Also, we asked the runner who picked up our finished dishes from the duck course about how the potato rosti was prepared. She went to the kitchen to ask the station chef who'd cooked our potatoes. But, she didn't return with an answer. Instead, we watched her just go back about her normal duties. The pacing...got off track after our first course, and never improved. Our reservation was quoted for 90 min, but we spent 2 hr 50 min at the table. As mentioned earlier, we could see the kitchen from where we were seated. We could also hear the staff talk. Not sure of his official position, but a gentleman in a flowered shirt seemed responsible for the flow of orders in and plates out of the kitchen. We could clearly see him using visual cues to manage the pace of our dishes, and could hear him each time he called our next course to the staff. Unfortunately, he'd wait several minutes after our previous course had been cleared before calling in the next, which created gaps of 15 minutes or more between courses. As we waited for our squash course, we watched the kitchen seemingly take a break. After nearly 10 minutes of idle time, he appeared to realize we'd been forgotten. We heard him call out our order and watched as he and one of the station chef's debated about what had happened. One final hiccup with service. A couple days before our visit, we exchanged emails with the restaurant to add a cake to take home with us. Unfortunately, instead of receiving a boxed cake on our way out, it was brought to us between the duck and desert courses, plated, to be eaten right then. Also, our waiter seemed completely unaware we wanted it to take home. As a final disappointment, at no point in the evening was anything said to us by anyone about any of the issues or mistakes. It was as though it was all normal. In the end, we enjoyed our visit, and appreciated the craft and creativity of the food. Our bill was more than $200 per person though. At that price point, we have far less tolerance for service related issues, especially when there's zero acknowledgement at the time by the staff. I feel confident we'll go back for another meal. Hopefully the service will be hiccup free.

Yelp
I had a chance to try Field & Main almost a week ago, for a late lunch after a long bike ride. We had made a reservation for one of their cabañas for 2PM, but finished our ride a little faster than we anticipated and arrived early. The restaurant was accommodating and managed to give us a cabaña table. First, these cabañas are perhaps the best adaptation to the pandemic that I have seen. Top notch and clearly a significant investment by the restaurant. Love the privacy and the nice landscaping. The food and drinks were outstanding. We had their gazpacho (I need more of this gazpacho), the chili verde chilaquiles and the ooMami smash burger. I now have an excuse to start bike rides from Marshall in order to visit again.

Yelp
A great place to dine for special occasions or to pop into the bar area for craft cocktails and beer and amazing appetizers! We like to graze and there are always plenty of wonderful small dishes to snack on. We've been many times and have tried different experiences from the chefs table to hanging at the bar for a quick bite and drink and it's always wonderful!

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing service! The outdoor cabanas are beautiful, although in the summer just be aware that there may be bugs. As an appetizer I definitely recommend the broccoli, it was delicious! I got the scallop dish as my entree and it was cooked perfectly and flavorful without being too salty, although I didn't really understand the popcorn on the side. The portion size is a bit small compared to the meat entrees, so if you're hungry I would get a meat dish. If you like sweet drinks the sangria will be a winner, it's sweet, fruity, and refreshing. Would come back!

Yelp
5 Stars + 5 more. Absolutely, amazingly delicious. A perfect date night or special occasion place. But make reservations and make them early. A week in advance we could only get after 8 pm on a Saturday. We were on the 2nd floor. Love the converted old house. Service was awesome but let's talk about the food. Wow!! The menu is small but something for everyone. 2 of us ordered the Grilled Flank Steak, 1 got the Cauliflower Shwarma and 1 of us got the Ooomami Smash Burger with a 2nd patty. We started with the Hearth Bread Board. OMG!! You must try the bread with Ramp Butter. The bread was amazing....crispy, soft and grilled with a little salt. I could eat just that and be fine. The steak was perfectly cooked. I fortunately also got to try the burger which was wonderful. No one left a single morsel of food on their plates. It was just so good. They even have a kids menu. And a great wine list but if you want an inexpensive glass of wine for $7 they have that too. Love that. If you can reserve one of the cabanas. A wonderful addition because of Covid. Twinkle lights and privacy make for a perfect special occasion spot. Definitely check out this restaurant but plan on spending some money. But worth it. That bread though....mmmmmm.....

Yelp
Field & Main is a media darling but has begun to slip on their execution. We've gone back several times and the last two times (a few months apart) myself and my friends received one or more items that were dramatically over salted. Some of their newer items have also been big flops. I can forgive that because I appreciate chefs who are willing to try new things even if it means they sometimes fail. But the over salting? At a restaurant that charges this much? Come on guys. The last time we actually had to send something back. Generally speaking the quality of service from the waitstaff and front of house remains top tier and the beverage menu is always a delight. We love to play the mystery wine game. But I am losing my trust in the kitchen. I don't want to drive all the way out to Marshall to have to send food back because it's too salty. Woof. I hope they figure it out.

Clarence P.

Yelp
An upscale place in a small town. Overall things were probably better than other local places, but I have some problems with it. I know the chef has his ideas, but I dislike any place that thinks that they know everyone's taste. You get it the way the chef fixed it.... Not any choice. We were told that they won a prize for their hamburgers. I didn't vote on it. You have no choice on how the beef is cooked. Salad is dressed with their choice. Prices are way to high to be told that they know how food should be prepared. This may be the best food in town... find another town ! Even the local town diner tastes better. And you get it fixed your way.

Yelp
So happy I gave in and tried this restaurant. It's a hike from where I like but totally worth it! Made reservations about two weeks in advance for private outdoor seating. It's was freezing outside and yes, a steady draft but went prepared! This was recommended as a great date spot and it totally was! Intimate, safely away from others, well priced, and delish! The server was outstanding and gave some really awesome recommendations. I wish I caught his name but he was top notch! He was working Friday (03/05) evening and had his hair tied back. We (AS ALWAYS) overindulged. Most of the dishes were bomb! We started with some apps to share. The Carrot Soup was delicious, definitely on the sweeter side. The break board was great, the dip was perfectly balanced. The OooMami Burger was incredible as were the CRISPY potatoes (which we almost going to pad on but glad we didn't). For our main entree's my boyfriend and I shared the NY Strip Steak & Braised Pork Coppa. The steak was exquisite, cooked to perfection and seasoned wonderfully. The Braised Pork Coppa was a a slight let down. It was okay but didn't exceed any expectations we had for it unfortunately. Wish we'd tried the Duck! We put in orders for sides a bit late and kind of wish we didn't... The greens were overwhelmingly way too vinegar based and the Creamed Corn Bread Puddin' was okay - lacked any standout flavor. Drinks were amazing too and priced well. Would definitely return!
