Where to Find Matcha in San Francisco and the East Bay | Eater SF

"On a light-filled corner within shouting distance of USF, order a matcha tea latte, matcha latte with boba, or a large iced matcha latte with tapioca. Free, dependable Wifi, plus better than decent doughnuts, and a 7 a.m. opening time on weekdays deem this a destination cafe for that first matcha of the morning." - Janelle Bitker

Google
50/50 is a fantastic spot! The owners are very friendly and the staff is just fantastic. The coffee is delicious and I love the vibe in the shop. The make great drinks, and they have boba!! My go to is a Mocha! They are so good and making the drink taste good & look good!

Google
Bright space, good coffee, WiFi, and great music — all ingredients you need for a morning working session before heading down Geary boulevard to look for some tasty lunch.

Google
Excellent matcha latte! Tasty, flaky croissant also. Chill music. Busy corner with traffic noise though.

Google
They serve a really good barley tea here, and the muffin was delicious! I do have a question for management, though—there’s a device on the bathroom ceiling that looks like a camera, but apparently isn't one. I asked the barista, and while they said it's not a camera, they didn’t explain what it actually is. If anyone knows what it might be, feel free to share!

Google
Good coffee, but ..... Place is not very clean, staff standing around when counters need cleaning, guess that's just not a priority

Becke

Google
I ordered a Jasmine tea latte and it was underwhelming, not much tea flavor in it as it was on the watery side. I would stick to getting coffee here. the worker with purple hair helped me, she sighed when I asked for a straw, it was an awkward & off putting moment. Wouldn’t return back

Google
This is my second time grabbing coffee at this coffee shop. They charged $5 for a latte and an additional $1 for the half and half. In most coffee shops this is $4.25 to $5 for the same order. The place is clean. You used to be able to sit in there pre-pandemic but not at the moment. It is well ventilated which is a plus.

Google
Best coffee shop I've been to in a while. The bathroom was very wheelchair accessible in a way that most other places don't make the effort. Great matcha latte and pleasant environment as well. Pastries from Craftsman and Wolves. For here drinks served in real glassware. Pretty perfect.

Yelp
Absolutely my favorite coffee shop in SF (cold brew or chai are my favorites). I've been going here since maybe 2015. The staff is awesome. The owners are awesome (they got me a pie one year for Thanksgiving). A fair number of the customers know each other and there are *a lot* of regulars. No coffee shop should promise anything beyond good drinks, courteous service and perhaps a place to sit in quiet. fifty/fifty has managed to be a part of the community for a lot of folks. It's a wonderful place.

Yelp
4.5 Drinks: - Jasmine Tea Latte (Regular): It's actually really good! There was a strong (perfect) floral aroma from the jasmine. It was also a good amount of sweetness. - Vanilla Latte: Good, similar/standard with other places. Smaller than I expected (it was smaller than my regular size jasmine) Street parking I didn't expect too much as it was a last minute decision, but I was pleasantly surprised by my drink. Would recommend for jasmine tea lovers :)

Yelp
Why is this place named 50/50? Is it some type of milk to coffee ratio? Oh, I see. It's half caff. Half regular caffeine beans and half decaffeinated coffee beans. Let's talk aesthetics. White walls opening up the tiny space. For to go. Some outdoor sitting available in the form of a steps parklet. Drinks are usually okay to good but my orders are usually simple as in drinks like Americano or a cold brew. The most complex ones I ordered are one of their lattes but I usually keep it simple because I like single ingredient type of drinks. Their food is not bad but definitely can be better if they heat it up. Service is usually friendly.

Yelp
We ordered the honey coconut latte & lavender earl grey latte drinks ! - Honey coconut latte: 10/10, highly recommend! I ordered it less sweet, and it was perfect. - Lavender earl grey latte: Pleasantly strong lavender taste, really smooth. Cute and cozy corner store, with a clean white aesthetic.

Yelp
You know, nothing against this particular stretch of Geary, but it never feels like there's a whole lot going on around here. Don't get me wrong - it's not it's devoid of worthwhile businesses, but it feels like, more often than not, most people like me only pass on through. Which is a real shame because I always forget that one of my favorite coffee shops just happens to call this area home! Now, in my defense, it's not all that hard to see how Fifty/Fifty could be so easily missed. Between their lack of signage and relatively modest size, you may not even realize they're here until they're right in front of you. That being said, that sort of minimalism is part of what I like so much about this place - the vibe feels so chill and relaxed. Inside, there are just a handful of tables and counter seats by the window, so it never feels all that crowded or noisy. Which, in short, makes it perfect to post up at to get work done or take a breather, assuming you're able to snag one of those few seats. In keeping with the overall decor, Fifty/Fifty's menu is pretty modest, split almost evenly between a small range of coffees and teas. In addition, they also have a small array of baked goods, like scones, muffins, croissants, and cookies, but come early if you want to try them, as they always seem to sell out of most things in the morning (I usually only see cookies left in the afternoon). Across all of the times I've been here, despite how good some of the teas have sounded, I've only had their coffees - their Americano, Pourover Drip, and Iced Coffee - but they pack the perfect punch of caffeine to get my day going...and to keep me awake during the workday in the afternoon. Besides their coffee, the thing I love must about Fifty/Fifty is how utterly convenient it is. Beyond how they never get all that busy (most folks order and go), parking is never a problem, whether on Geary itself or on the cross streets. Given all of that, what's stopping me from coming here more often? Me and my forgetfulness, which I'm just going to have to do a better job of correcting!

Yelp
Searched for the best matcha in the city and this one popped. We tried both hot and iced matcha lattes and it was not the best, it was more of the tea they use with water downed matcha ,More like a flowery tea drink. Service was slow eventhough we were the only one there.

Yelp
Conveniently by USF and Geary Salon, Fifty / Fifty's location is great so I thought I'd stop by while running errands. The first thing you'll notice is that it's quite cold inside the store, so bring a jacket if you're planning on staying a while or working on your laptop. Secondly, there only seems to be one person working at a time, so there's an expectation that they juggle receiving orders, cleaning, and making drinks. That's a lot of responsibility to place on one person, and it inevitably causes slow service. Even on a late Monday morning, the person working was doing an intense balancing act and deserves all the tips in the world. You might wait 15 minutes for your drink, but it's understandable given their situation. I ordered the Iced Matcha Latte, and it wasn't the best- lots of other people have had good experiences with their coffees and purees, so I might try that instead next time. My drink tasted closer to a jasmine milk tea, which I do like, but it isn't what I wanted from here. The matcha flavor tastes diluted in the intense jasmine blend and milk, making for an okay drink overall but a disappointing matcha drink. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, and will try this place again either when they have more staff or less of a rush.

Yelp
I ordered a Lavender Latte and was quite disappointed - it lacked in flavor, both espresso and lavender flavor. A friend got a Chai Latte which also lacked in flavor... They only have a few tables (2-3 tables) that only seats 2 people and a bar seat by window with 4 seats. We came to spend time to do some work (they do have wifi) but it may not be ideal if you come in with a group of people due to limited seating. I was also sad that they did not have any pastries even though we got there around noon; not sure if they only have it in the morning or on the weekends though.

Yelp
Very minimalist interior. Very white, slightly sterile of a feeling. Straightforward I guess is the point. Love the simple yet extensive menu offerings. Stead stream of customers. I enjoyed my cappuccino and if I had the time I'm sure it would've been a nice place to sit and do work. Very small yet a decent amount of seating. Might be hard to find parking but that wasn't my experience

Yelp
I saw a gal on Tik Tok reviewing the best hot cocoa in SF. She said this one was in the top 10. It WAS really good ($5 for a small, $5.50 for a large) - It was super foamy with that silky (smallest bubbles foam) and a pretty design on top. But I would have liked it a bit hotter. I prefer my cocoa with whipped cream, and it did not come with that. The guy making it was some nice eye candy as well. For my money - the best undiscovered hot cocoa is at Arsicault Bakery - no one ever talks (or knows) about it - next time you stand in line there - treat yourself to one.

Yelp
Lavender Latte -- pretty flavorful and can taste the strong flavor of the lavender mixed with the latte. It was warm and foamy. Peach Tea Puree -- very refreshing, I preferred a little more sweetness, the peach flavor is very mild. The tea flavor is more prominent. Very quick service, nice aesthetic cafe to do work in. The interior is very minimal and bright.

Yelp
Small cafe with a cool menu. I got the lavender latte. A nice spot to grab a coffee to go. Actual space itself is cute but a bit cramped for doing work. It's well lit and a lot of natural light shines in from the windows making it feel open. The folk music they were playing was also nice to jam to.
google avatar

Shirley L.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service. A decent amount of selection of coffee, tea, and some juices.

Yelp
One of the best cups of coffee I've had in SF. I got a flat white, and they actually made it in the traditional fashion (not overly milky). The coffee had a really distinctive fruitiness, which left a very satisfying and lingering aftertaste. There was a thin layer of steamed milk rather than a super thick top layer of frothy milk (which some places will serve). This meant that every sip had good balance between the milkiness and the bitter coffee, which is exactly what I'm looking for in flat whites. Service was also friendly, and clearly knew some of the other customers well. Will definitely be stopping by again! Not too much seating, so seems more like a stop and go establishment.
google avatar

Andrea H.

Yelp
Thier coffee drinks are quite good. I particularly like their cappuccinos and mochas with oat milk. They also serve good pastries. They have indoor seating again if you're looking for a sit down place to have coffee. However, I wouldn't recommend buying coffee beans here. When I bought some they were really lacking in flavor.
google avatar

Annie L.

Yelp
This place is ok for grab and go drinks. On the corner of Geary & Spruce, it's a small café but didn't seem too homey. It's more of a morning grab & go type of place. I ordered a Matcha which was more on the bitter side and no sweetener to balance it out. The chocolate twist was rough and hard. Not many pastries choices either. Funny how this came up as one of the top places for Matcha in the city but I didn't think so. Worth a try but not for me!
google avatar

Darlene Y.

Yelp
Very cute small cafe with a handful of seats/ tables. The ladies that were working were super friendly and sweet. I had the LAVENDER LATTE and if you're not a big fan of super sweet drinks like me, you can adjust the sweetness a bit. ENJOY!

Yelp
Nice spot! It was empty when I arrived at 1pm on a Wednesday. I stayed about an hour getting some work done (the wifi is solid) and a few people came through during that time, but overall it stayed very quiet. The door was propped wide open - good for ventilation but bring a sweater! The staff were very friendly. My latte was good. The cup was smaller than some so the espresso taste really same through. Milk was a bit on the bubbly side. The croissant was also good. Buttery and flaky, and I had it warmed up because that was offered. There were very few food options when I visited, just a handful of plain croissants and one ginger molasses cookie. All in all I'd happily return if in the area in the future, I'd just be careful not to arrive too hungry.
google avatar

Yelp
Over prices cold brew, small area for some work and good lighting if that's what your looking for.
google avatar

Claudine R.

Yelp
I loooove the lavender earl grey tea latte here (basically a London fog with lavender). I honestly haven't gotten anything else because it's that good. I prefer it cold but it's also good hot. This little coffee shop is always quiet and slow, at least the times I've been there. I believe they close early, maybe 4pm on the weekdays. Seems like a good place to have some quiet work time. It's not huge or anything either but still a good place for a coffee shop. They're really friendly too. I ordered my drink cold, but they made it hot and offered to make it again. I took the hot one tho to try it out, I just really appreciated the offer.
google avatar

Kourtney W.

Yelp
I like the lavender Earl grey latte with oat milk. The sweetness level is adjustable and it's not too heavy on the lavender. The baristas are always friendly and this if a great spot to sit for a bit.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
This is a cute little coffee shop! They currently don't have any indoor seating. We tried the honey coconut latte and the lavender earl grey latte. The honey coconut latte was my favorite of the two. I like how you can really taste the coconut flavor! You can also substitute your milk for any drink! They also also offer tapioca, but opted to not get it today, will try next time!
google avatar

Maryleen R.

Yelp
Omg best tea lattes in the city! I tried the lavendar earl grey and the honey coconut both delicious! I love the the tea stands out in both drinks not too milky also the perfect amount of sweetness... sad that it's in an area I can't visit often... my bf had the vanilla latte and it was also good .. please expand!
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
super cute, quiet, and clean space! the LAVENDER EARL GREY LATTE with oat milk was so good! it was equal parts earl grey to lavender, and it didn't taste like soap. i've had experiences where the oat milk took away the flavor, but whatever brand of oat milk they use here works and added a nice creaminess to my latte. can't wait to get another one sometime in the future :-)
google avatar

Bridget B.

Yelp
Great spot to sit and have coffee. The interior is simple and pretty and the coffee is great. My latte tasted great and the milk had great texture. They also have many options for tea lattes (jasmime latte, earl grey latte, etc.) which I don't see on the menu at too many other places!

James C.

Yelp
when I'm in the area I always stop in . I must say it's the best. I get a latte , and it's always perfect. I like to just sit and gaze onto Geary st.

Jaden R.

Yelp
Amazing matcha latte and the cutest little neighborhood coffee shop with seating for getting work done!
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the smoothest and most flavorful coffee I've ever had. Great service, too. Try the iced lavender latte and it might change your life - don't say I didn't warn ya :)

Yelp
I was walking on Geary at a godforsaken hour because I had to take my car in for a software issue that affected a lot of that year's make and model. Can you imagine? I never connect autos with software, but considering how I perpetually need the IT help desk at work to help me with my laptop, I get nervous about driving and being affected by some viral bug that will lead to my fiery death. In that unsettling state of mind, I wound up at this tiny corner spot that serves various beverages with or without caffeine, tapioca drinks not before noon (thus the dearth of young Asians at that hour), and a lotta baked goods. Well, the display case looked fully stocked because it was just a little past 7AM on a Saturday morning. It went from empty to all the tables and counter seats completely taken in a half-hour span. Luckily I ordered a $5 Honey Coconut Tea Latte and parked myself at a table before it was taken. That was quite a mouthful of subtle flavors in that biodegradable cup (photo: http://bit.ly/2HHkhaY), and I enjoyed it while the hipsters gave me small-mouth as they sauntered by. They really need to work on their posture...and their attitude. But not the two industrious women behind the counter. They were aces. TEA LATTE - 4 stars...tasty concoction and not overly sweet AMBIANCE - 4 stars...clean, white walls with refurbished schoolhouse swivel chairs and tables SERVICE - 4.5 stars...they tow the line here TOTAL - 4 stars...more like 90/10 RELATED - Looking for dining options in the Richmond? Here's a collection of places I've tried and reviewed: http://bit.ly/2HvkBu7

Yelp
Consistently good vanilla lattes. The space is nice, cozy, and peaceful. Staff is always kind and works quickly but takes care when making drinks. Love the bar seating against the window!
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
This is a review for their tea lattes. I absolutely love tea and 50/50 does it so well. They don't over sweeten their tea lattes and they also offer a variety of high quality teas including matcha, oolong, and earl grey. There really is something for everyone here. So often at coffee and tea shops the tea is an after thought but not at 50/50. This is definitely the best tea or coffee shop in my little neighborhood and I love going here but if I didn't live in the area I would probably find a closer coffee shop to frequent. My one critique is that you can end up spending a lot of time here waiting for your order if you happen to order behind a big group like the SF fire department. They handcraft each drink and it's definitely worth the wait if you aren't in a rush. They also have a qr code you can scan to order ahead to solve this issue but it didn't work for me when I tried it. Maybe you'll have better luck. All in all, definitely give their tea lattes a go and I promise you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Kelsey A.

Yelp
I stumbled into this spot and I'm glad I did. They make one of the best cappuccinos. The almond milk cappuccino was perfectly frothed and not sweet at all.
google avatar

Laura Y.

Yelp
Just a heads up that they no longer have boba on their menu. This was disappointing as I had gone out of my way to come here to try their boba but I had a decent boba-less oolong milk tea. It didn't have strong oolong flavor and tasted a bit watered down but I did appreciate that the sweetness wasn't overpowering. It was just right. If you're looking for tea-forward drinks in the area, I would recommend going to Boba Guys or Tea Hut instead.

Matt K.

Yelp
Great spot to chill or get some work done. I got the matcha latte and finished it in a hot sec. I think overall my new studying spot. It has a simple menu which I like. I'm sure you can find something you like. I hope you try this spot out. USF is right around the corner too so for those student try studying here instead of the library
google avatar

Yelp
My wife has to go to Ariscault at least once when we travel to the bay so I then love going to Fifty/Fifty after. It is a no frills coffee shop. As a person who always gets pour-overs I definitely appreciate that they offer pour overs. My wife is a latte drinker and they do a solid latte as well. If you do not go to Ariscault they do have their own box of pastries even a ham & cheese which is no Ariscault but it's solid. Not going to be the Instagram super cute spot but I love Fifty/Fifty. Ole reliable
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
Tried the honey coconut tea latte iced along with a croissant and it was so good. It almost was like a Thai iced tea but you could set taste the honey and coconut. Would def come to try the other tea latte flavors.
google avatar

Ian L.

Yelp
They carry ritual coffee here - but unfortunately only blends available for espresso shots so I ended up getting a latte. Didn't really leave a lasting impression but also wasn't a bad drink. What I was really impressed by is how healthy the fiddle leaf fig was. It was very healthy. I'm also curious about the beans they carry as they had a wide variety of single origin beans on the shelf. Will check it out next time.
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
Matcha latte was so good! Hint of rose or some other tea that made it very special. Did not sit down.
google avatar

Lani S.

Yelp
This is based my first and only visit. It was a Friday morning around 9am. I'm not normally in this area during the weekdays, but I was in the neighborhood for some business. The menu is simple, but enticing. I ordered the Honey Coconut Tea Latte and I loveddddd it. I also noticed they have Oatly oat milk. Score-- because not many cafes have it. Staff is friendly, the place has a lot of foot traffic... I liked the simple, clean space. Lots of wood. Cute!
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
This is one of the best coffee places near the USF campus. They are a bit on the pricy side, but it's San Francisco. My go to is their lavender early grey latte with oatmilk and it is the perfect amount of tea, vanilla, lavender and sweetness! They also some delicious baked goods including the seasonal muffins. If you ever have the chance to get their pumpkin muffin, it is to die for.
google avatar

Ellen L.

Yelp
This is probably my new favorite coffee shop in the area. The interior is bright, minimalist, and clean. There's not much seating, but I was able to grab a table on Saturday morning and settle down with a hot Lavender Earl Grey tea latte and a warm cheddar scone. The tea was lovely and I really enjoyed the strong flavor of lavender. The scone tasted great. It was soft and easy to pull apart; more like a fluffy cheese pastry. Definitely going to be returning on weekend mornings when I get the chance! They have WiFi and conveniently placed wall outlets too, so it's a good place to do some work.
google avatar

Ichor B.

Yelp
Great drip coffee with a nice modern vibe for sitdown. Not much going on on this part of Geary but if you're here, this is the place to go. Royal coffee next door is nice too but has a different vibe.
google avatar

Kali K.

Yelp
I'm going to give 50-50 coffee shop two out of five stars. It wasn't a very close walk to where we were staying, there wasn't any available pastries or food, and the coffee was very average. The worker was also not very versed in coffee roasting and couldn't answer some of my questions. Not worth visiting.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
{Overall: 4; Drinks: 4} Atmosphere: 3.75; Service: 4 Great find for the neighborhood - usually not too crowded, so you can find a spot to take a seat and chat with friends. The milk teas (or tea lattes, as they call it) a delicately done. Not too sweet, not too rich, but frothy and warming. Only thing is that there's something about the decor that makes the spot feel a little cold, vs. cozy and intimate.
google avatar

Alan K.

Yelp
I have to say, I think SF might have better game than its LA counterparts -- that or I got lucky with my Soy Latte. SF was 2/2 on giving me soy lattes that came in a very velvety texture with perfect latte art. Their espressos aren't too earthy, giving way for a very mild, warming sweet experience. It's something that is absolutely perfect for a rainy day. Overall, good job fifty / fifty! I'll be back if I'm around the area again.
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
A nice selection of tea lattes with the option of adding espressos to your drink. I had the honey coconut latte with espresso and it was surprising refreshing on a hot afternoon. I will definitely come back to try the other drinks.
google avatar

Catherine S.

Yelp
This tiny little coffee shop is located right on the corner of the street. The cafe itself is pretty tiny with only 3 tiny tables and about 4-5 bar seats right at the window. There were a few people here studying, but for the most part people were standing in line and just getting drinks to-go. It seemed like getting various tea drinks was the popular thing to do. For some reason, I remembered seeing people recommend getting a hazelnut latte here so that's what I ended up trying. Unfortunately, she said that it was made with some hazelnut syrup but I ended up going for it anyway just to try it. I made a very bad decision in sticking with trying this hazelnut latte because it tasted very artificial. The syrup tasted like it was old and had been sitting there for a long time and completely ruined the latte. I barely drank half of it and ended up trashing it unfortunately. I hope their other drinks taste better.
google avatar

Dan F.

Yelp
Nice place except I'm not a fan of Ritual Coffee. Coffee & tea drinks, limited pastries selection, and tapioca after 12pm is about all that is offered here. Being right on the Geary Blvd thoroughfare, it can get a little loud with the 38 running through and the constant fleet of delivery trucks. Staff was very nice and the 100% touchless bathroom is pretty cool (you still gotta use your hands for the business part though). Not a whole lotta seating either. Parking is better than being deeper into the avenues.
google avatar

Arezou A.

Yelp
Love supporting my neighborhood coffee shop. Everyone here is so friendly - shout out to Christina for always putting a smile on everyone's face. I walk in and it's always a debate between thai tea, matcha and a lavender earl grey. All good options, all with a milk substitute.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
I came on a Thursday morning to try the Earl Grey Lavender drink. I wanted to get boba but they don't make it until 12PM. The girl who greeted me was a bit unfriendly and seemed hostile - but I let it go since it was like 7:30 AM. I ordered my the drink and got it togo and iced, the total was $4. My first impressions was that the lavender and overall earl grey flavors were really strong! It tasted good and was a great pick me up to a Friday Jr Morning. I came here expecting to see the doughnuts that everyone was talking about but didn't see them in the display case - so that was a bummer. The atmosphere is clean, minimalist and has plenty of natural lighting - it reminds me of boba guys! I was able to bring my sketch book and just draw for a couple minutes before catching the bus. Overall, the drink was good, a fair price, and I definitely want to come back to try the boba! They have these super cute stamp cards that look like business cards so don't forget to grab one.
