"With two locations — a wine bar in Hayes Valley and a sister bottle shop Millay in the Castro — Fig & Thistle provides some much-needed natty in some more conventional-leaning ‘hoods. The bar, which was opened in 2012 by Angel Davis and Nguey Lay, is fun and funky — share the bunkbeds with friends for a more intimate experience — and the wine list is small but thoughtful, with a focus on California. The market is a meet-cute of a neighborhood bottle shop, candlelit bar, and succulent garden: A surprisingly quiet retreat from Market Street’s normal clamor." - Sam Chapple-Sokol

Such a great place with amazing wine and sake selections. Angel the owner knows her wine. Stop in and enjoy the impeccable selection of wine.

They have a fantastic selection of natural wines!! Angel was very knowledgeable in helping me select the right wine for my palate! I love the plants and jewelry, too. The selection at Whole Foods is terrible for any decent wine (in my opinion). This shop has an abundance of options at reasonable prices in a cute space! Thank you!

Cool shop. Great ambiance, especially in the evenings with the lighting. The service is always great, although I find some of their wines a little out there. You'll definently taste something unique but they'd benefit from some crowd pleasers - not mainstream brands but varietals with broader appeal. I've enjoyed bottles from their retail shop in the back more than glasses in the lounge. Best thing is the location! Perfect for when the train is delayed. Skip Whole Foods and get wine here!

Cute and cozy wine store with a wine bar inside. Great selection of natural and organic wines, and a knowledgeable staff. When we visited they have several wines available by the glass - 3 whites, 4 reds, and sparkling options. They also have small bites like bread and butter, pickles, and olives available for order.

Super cozy and lovely bar - if you are looking for a good chat with some great wine in a quiet place at Castro, here’s definitively the place to go

Stopped by at this new store a couple weeks ago. Small selection with many wines I would be interested in trying. I like this as its not overwhelming but clearly thoughtfully selected. First visit I tried two hard ciders. The proprietor told me how one was made half with apples brought from Spain and handled a special way, blended with apples from upstate NY. It sounded like a bunch of affected hooey, but boy was it amazing. Yesterday I returned and asked her to recommend something to go with what I was cooking. She chose something great, and moreover directed me to one of the less expensive bottles in the shop. I'm convinced she really knows what she is talking about. I will return here. I'm eager to see what else is in store.

Great place. Just what the neighborhood needs. Low key, cozy, great selection, knowledgeable and excellent staff, good prices. It's both wine market and wine bar. Why buy at Safeway with this gem across the street?

This quaint wine shop is a wonderful spot that showcases an array of wines along with an equally vibrant display of house plants for sale. The staff is both knowledgable and friendly. Great spot to stop in and be on your way as it is just off of market.
