Finnegan's Wake is another bar that I have always enjoyed coming to for years. It's always been a great drinking bar and also a little off the beaten path...far enough, but not too far from the other bars I frequent on Haight Street. As always, location is one of the important factors in what makes a good bar great.
Anyway, on a fun afternoon of barhopping and seeing old bar friends yesterday, this was my third stop after leaving Sweeties in outer North Beach and then the Gold Cane in the Haight.
Upon arrival, the bar was surprisingly crowded and a bunch of stools were filled, but much to my disappointed, I counted twelve guys (not including me or the bartender) and one girl. Not that I'm looking to scam or anything, but I do like a little balance and variety, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I was so amused by this that I ended up talking to the only woman in there and we had the greatest conversation about bars past and a new German place that opened up on Clement St. After that, I shot a little pool (noticed the bumpers are getting worse) and then it was time to move on since I knew I had some car friends (and non-car friends) waiting for me at the Dubliner.
All in all, it was a fun afternoon and evening. My elderly dad has absolutely been driving me crazy lately, so this was a most welcome and needed reprieve.
Four bars...Sweeties, the Gold Cane, Finnegan's Wake, and then the Dubliner. Nothing like the olden days, but still a fun itinerary for a pretty interesting cross section of humanity. Not one bar trendy or flashy...Bukowski would have been proud!
