I'm normally not the type to ever send back food at a restaurant because I hate wasting food, but I had to here.
My friends and I agreed that the first few dishes of the 4 course service were great, and the service up until we recieved our entrées was fantastic! However, when the 5 of us recieved our red snapper entrées, none of them were cooked properly. The skin was undercooked, almost rubbery. The middle was so raw that the normally white and flakey fish was red and rubbery in the middle (like red tuna), and it couldn't even be cut through without a lot of effort. The fish itself was barely seasoned, and this was the case for all 5 of the red snappers.
When we tried to bring this up with the servers, we were initially given many excuses: "it is 'red' snapper", "it's the stomach of the fish, so that's why it's not flakey and a different colour". No. I know cooked fish vs sashimi, and that fish texture and taste was NOT cooked. Eventually, after a lot of back and forth, the server brought our dishes back to the chef. The chef apparently said the fish was fine, but the server offered to replace my dish. Only my dish was replaced because the others had lost their appetites.
The second fish was WONDERFULLY cooked and well seasoned. It was white/very slightly pink and flakey, like properly cooked red snapper should be.
After all this, the servers were very kind and apologetic, and offered complimentary shots and gave extra dessert. They also thanked us for bringing up the issue and sincerely apologized. And while we appreciated this, this all came AFTER they first tried to come up with several excuses, and tried to make us think we didn't know what cooked fish was supposed to be like.
Overall, the experience was unfortunately soured by the horribly undercooked fish and the initially poor response of the servers.
Edit: The defensiveness of the reply from the owner below demonstrates the level of defensiveness that my friends and I encountered at this restaurant when we brought up the fact that all 5 of our snappers were undercooked.
Only after A LOT of insistence were any corrective steps taken (including offering to replace ONLY 1 out of 5 of the snappers).
If you'd like to eat at the restaurant that truly prioritizes your experience, immediately responds to poorly cooked food concerns, and doesn't condescend and immediately get defensive when you bring up issues, go somewhere else in Montreal.
