New San Diego Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened During the Pandemic - Eater San Diego

"Longtime Mission George restaurant Szechuan Mandarin has been remodeled and reopened as Fish Grub, where the menu centers around fish and chips — offering everything from Pacific cod to whole fried tilapia — but also offers seafood sandwiches, tacos, and entrees like ginger-soy salmon and coconut curry shrimp. Its weekday happy hour runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m." - Candice Woo

Excellent food, fresh ingredients, perfectly prepared. the fish and chips were spot on. The fish was thick and flakey, the fried zucchini was lightly battered with a nicely seasoned crispy outside and hot steaming zucchini inside. The poke was well balanced and fresh. The happy hour fish tacos were generous and crispy. We will definitely be back.

We just had an early meal there this evening. We enjoyed two fish (haddock) tacos each and some popcorn chicken with a yummy aioli sauce. It was Happy Hour, so the price was right for dinner and a glass of wine. This was formerly the beloved Szechuan Mandarin Restaurant which closed a year or two ago. The renovations by the new owners are nicely done, and instead of a difficult-to-maintain fish aquarium, as featured in the original restaurant, there's a monitor mounted on the wall featuring a digital aquarium. The tacos were bursting with fish, shredded cabbage and tomatoes. Very good, and we'll be back again to check out the rest of the menu. It's a great day in Grantville, as there's a new fish restaurant in town, and it's mighty tasty. A tip of our cap to Mark, Charlie and Mike who all made us feel right at home.

This used to be a random run down Chinese restaurant and I’m glad Fish Grub took its place and revamped this area. It has a cute outdoor patio that gives an illusion of windows like you’re in a garden in Italy. There’s plenty of parking and the space inside is huge! It’s one of those places where you order and pay first then sit down. However you do have the choice of sitting at a table and decide there too. 1st time 3/29/2021: We just missed happy hour which is from 4-6pm. It’s only for alcohol, not food. After we placed our order, we were given the buzzer. Due to COVID, the buzzer is wrapped in plastic sandwich bag and changed out after each guest. Peppery calamari ($12) - this was salty and more garlicky than peppery. I like how it’s lightly crispy fried. 1pc fish and chips ($12) - one piece of large pacific cod and choice of sauce. Either sriracha aioli, cusabi ranch, or tartar. We got the tartar. This piece is big and juicy. 2 battered fish tacos ($7) - corn tortilla, slaw and same choice of sauce. This time, we got sriracha aioli and it was the perfect combo. 5 wings ($9) - Three choice of flavors, either garlic peppery, tangy ginger glazed, or Kung pao bbq. We got garlic peppery. We asked for limes to squirt on the seafood. We also asked for extra sauce. We were able to taste the aioli, cusabi, and tartar. I’m not a fan of cusabi which is cucumber, wasabi, and ranch. I don’t like ranch and my bf doesn’t like wasabi. The tartar is the best with the fish and chips and the aioli with the tacos. This place is Asian owned, so you can taste the Asian inspired in the calamari and the wings. It’s not like typical American pub flavors. It taste like what you get at Asian restaurants like salt and pepper wings or fish sauce wings. 2nd time: 4/1/2021 We enjoyed it so much that we came back for more. We ordered take out this time. Coconut curry chicken ($12) - came with seasoned rice and a choice of sides. We got cauli potato mash. I didn’t taste the coconut but it’s probably what made it really creamy. There’s no heat spice. There was generous amount of chicken poured over the rice. The cauli potato mash is not all made out of cauliflower. It was mash with chunks of cauliflower. I would say stick to the fish dishes but if you’re craving for rice, this is not bad either. Wings ($9) - This time we got sriracha glazed (the menu says tangy ginger glazed). This was a wet rub and not spicy. The chicken was meaty and juicy. Fish and chips ($12 one piece) - boyfriend loved this so we ordered it again and asked for extra crispy so it’s a bit golden brown and so much better. A lemon wedge was also included. I’m happy to say that the seasonings have been adjusted. Last time it was a bit salty. This time, it’s perfect. They also added Asian Slaw for us to try. Loved it. It could taste the toasted sesame peanut sauce.

Fish Grub is a gem of a find on Mission Gorge Blvd. The service is friendly, wonderfully hospitable 💛✨☀️⚡️⚡️⚡️ and the food tasty. The oyster shooters are awesome. The batter on the fish (and chips) was super light with a hearty crunch factor. Fish tacos happy hour deal is solid. Outdoor patio seating or spacious inside seating. We had a teacher retirement gathering here and had a delicious great time. Thank you, Charles & Crew! 💛✨

We had the whole fried tilapia with fries, and the walnut shrimp with veggies. Everything was hot and delicious. The outdoor dining area is clean and very pretty. The service was amazing! We want to go back to try their other dishes!

Decided to try this new offering in the neighborhood and glad we did. The batter on the fish and chicken was light and crispy. The inside was juicy. The mahi mahi tacos had a generous amount of very fresh fish. The sriracha aioli and cusabi (cucumber wasabi) paired really well with the fish. Can't wait to try more on the menu!

Inside was spacious and clean. We got the corn chowder and fish and chips and enjoyed both. The prices are a little higher but I feel like portions are shareable so it can still be an affordable option for a night out. We will be back!

Decent fish and chips. Reminded me of home somewhat. Wish they offered more traditional chips but they were good nevertheless.
