I adore the great Kit F. but sometimes he doesn't know how to have a good time. Or where to do it. And sometimes, when the mood and night are right - that can be at 5P. It's not everyone's scene, and it's not always mine, but I will tell you this: go with someone who knows everyone who works there, and go on a nice night when you can be on the patio and enjoy the night air and said employees are speedy about getting your drinks . . . you'll dig this place, I'm pretty sure.
I have a soft spot for divey bars, the older school, the better. I think it goes back to the fact that one of my best friends from growing up is the daughter of one of the original owners of the late Mike and Angelo's, one of the BEST EVER divey bars, home of Swami, a place with a fantabulous patio, etc etc . . . and 5P is a place that has that same . . . vibe . . . in certain ways. Maybe it's just cause I grew up here, who knows, but when the stars align, there's something just freaking cool about the places that have been around forever, have dirt around the edges and don't look bright and shiny in the daylight (or maybe ever if you're honest, but they somehow seem to on that fun Friday or Saturday night, you know?) and the beer's cold, bartenders who know you will frequently spot you a shot (or three), and the people watching is always a hoot.
That's one version of my Atlanta, and I love it. Last night was exactly the kind of night at 5P that made me remember why it's so good to know what that feeling is like.
