The Best Dive Bars In Atlanta

"When you need a beer break and a bar with a come-as-you-are attitude, Five Paces is the move. Unlike its neighbor Red Door, this gritty bar largely attracts a clientele who want no parts of the otherwise sleek Buckhead bar scene. Beer is the most common thing in people’s cups, so don’t come here thinking you’ll get one of those cocktails that come with a little umbrella. The slightly older crowds pack out the long, galley-style bar room and often spill out onto the huge patio with an outdoor bar. Because there’s no food here, you’re bound to meet a few serious drinkers who enjoy trapping strangers in conversation about the good ole days. " - juli horsford

You Can’t Beat the Dive Vibes at These Atlanta Bars

"Open since 1955, head to this dive bar institution in Buckhead to watch sports and sip on cold beers or a budget-friendly cocktail. Five Paces can become a standing-room-only affair the later it gets, especially on the weekends when the DJs are spinning. Weekday evenings are generally quieter and filled with local residents." - Eater Staff

Bars and Nightlife in Atlanta

"The crowd here is young 20s preppy on the weekends, but the venue is 60-plus years old and still thriving. It’s one of several dive bars still prospering in Buckhead in the midst of rapid high-rise development.Where: 41 Irby Ave NW, Atlanta, GA 30305" - MATADOR_NETWORK

Left my credit card here by accident and went out of town the next day. When I came back 8 days later, they had my card safely secured and returned it to me immediately upon my asking. Trustworthy staff, cold beer, good vibes.

Stephen Keller

Google
I’m biased because I play for Dr. Kahn but I wanted to say that I’ve left my phone and wallet everywhere here, unattended, and the bar has always found and kept my wallet safe until after the show, and I’ve always found my phone before I left. I’ve probably played 75 coming up to 100 shows here. Also, I don’t drink. So take that into account too. But it’s one of my favorite places to play. Usually packed with an awesome crowd that loves us and rocks out with us all night.

Justin Brooks

Google
My gf drunk here and was roofied she tested positive for it in her blood work the next day when I went to ask the manager about the cameras ot see if we could catch the person who did it she said they don’t have cameras but she keeps an eye on the bar obviously keeping an eye on the bar is not enough to keep young women safe 5 paces inn should absolutely invest in some cameras now if they haven’t before who knows how many times this has happened and will happen. Also if you read the other reviews it seems this is not the first time people have drugged or had things stolen from them here avoid this bar at all costs.

Jared Anwar

Google
Multiple robberies have occurred here, people have gotten drugged and then taken into vans and fleeced of thousands of dollars from their mobile apps etc to be dumped at a gas station. Do not come here whatsoever. Terrible service and owners and bouncers lack accountability

Allie Haith

Google
I am new to Atlanta and I stumbled in here one afternoon while walking around the neighborhood. I got the vibe that everyone knew each other. It was super busy but the bartender Tawny was prompt and very friendly! she gave me the history on the bar and made me feel welcomed while still serving everyone else. I will definitely be back.

Abigail Cathcart

Google
used to love this place until my boyfriend and my friend both got their phones stolen here (on different nights). in my boyfriend’s case they got into his Apple Pay and Apple ID and changed all of his passwords and took around $10k in total. Also they spent $2k on a delta airlines gift card? Total nightmare to get it all back (and some he did not). The speed at which they were able to do this was astounding and makes me think it was someone smarter than the average hoodlum who does this professionally. sad because this used to be a really fun place and somewhere i felt safe but the past 2 years it’s gone downhill

Brandon Peterson

Google
Fun dive bar atmosphere with great bartenders and live music!

Yelp
Nice neighborhood bar in the middle of buckhead. They're open pretty late during the week so it's a preferred spot for night owls.

Yelp
Young Drunk Kids Half dance club half dive bar. The drinks were flowing and amateurs were all out to see. This quick write might be better if i wasn't almost 50. They do pour a good heavy mixer so in the end I can't complain. I'm just a little too old for this scene. Thanks, Boomer

Yelp
Great afternoon spot for a beverage and unwind . Top Notch bartenders , Cold beer and friendly service . A Buckhead staple since 1955! Out door seating , Dog friendly . Great jukebox, pinball and Top Golf game! I highly suggest taking a ride share after dark . Available for parties and reunions . You can bring your own food .

Yelp
LOVE Five Paces!!! Great music with a great vibe. Local owners who care very much that everyone is safe and having a good time!!!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
My friends and I have been going to 5 Paces for years! Every time we're in the area for a concert, we always meet there first to hang out. The staff is always super friendly and the drinks are always perfect! These guys are really top notch!

Brent B.

Yelp
Great vibes and good people. Always feel at home at 5P. Easily, Buckheads best spot to grab a drink with friendly bartenders and staff.

Yelp
Five Paces Inn is on "bar row" in Buckhead and eventually the bars all just blend in and look the same. There's nothing here that really stands out. It caters to a younger fraternity/sorority crowd. My friends and I stopped in for a drink and the mixed drinks are not that good. They had live music and there was some open seating so that was convenient. We only stayed for a short while.

Meagan C.

Yelp
One of the last genuine dive bars in Buckhead. Best drinks prices! On weekends they open up all 3 bars...a DJ, the main bar and live music...the place can get a little packed but the atmosphere is great for dancing, drinking and having fun with friends. Bartenders stay on their toes and keep the drinks flowing...whether it's for happy hour or a Friday night 5P never disappoints. It can get pretty packed but I've never had a problem with my phone or anything being taken from me...use common sense as you would in any crowded situation and you'll have an epic night!

Rodney B.

Yelp
Great All-American bar! Location, cold beer, awesome cocktails, and amazing staff! Highly recommend!!

Tawny S.

Yelp
One of the oldest establishments in town!! The live music on the weekends is consistently filled with incredibly talented musicians. The staff is prompt and kind and the prices are great!

Frank S.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years. The bartenders are top notch, and very hospitable. Great drinks, great prices, and a phenominal ambience. Best bar in Buckhead! I will never consider another my home away from home as I have The 5 Paces Inn.

Debb1967 ..

Yelp
Have been coming here for years now. Love the vibe and atmosphere. Great place to meet people. Bartenders are awesome.

Yelp
Great bar! Great service! Festive and fun with some really great music. We'll be back!

Yelp
Stay far away. I was sitting at a back table just after closing time. Without warning, the off duty police officer working security asked me (seated at a picnic table with five other people) asked everyone at the table if I knew them. They didn't, I had sat down to finish my drink. I'm assuming the table were regulars, but I was waiting for an uber while finishing my drink. When they said no, they didn't know me, he picked up my drink, poured it out, and told me to leave. Completely randomly. I was so shocked. There was no, "finish it quickly, we're closed." nothing of the sort. The place is filthy dirty inside and out with a crowd of mostly under 25, at one point 'moshing' to a band playing "Cotton-Eyed Joe" super weird experience. I won't be returning.

Shanna F.

Yelp
This place is the best! From the customer service, great drinks and fun atmosphere it is hands down the best bar in Atlanta.

Layne Y.

Yelp
Your phone will get stollen here. My guess is they have someone who takes the phones to florida and then ships them to china from there because l was able to track my phone on its entire kidnapping. Got to china in like 2 days and have hears this from multiple people.

Betsy K.

Yelp
Laid back, fun vibe! Have always gotten top-notch service (good pours by friendly bartenders)!

Jason B.

Yelp
I've been going here for over 20 years. Great staff and great atmosphere! Live music, good vibes, and lots of cold beer. Love this place!

Meagan B.

Yelp
This is one of the best bars in ATLANTA, I have been going to this bar forever. The bartenders are awesome and everyone who works there. When I have out of town guest this is where we end up for the night. Todd and Shana are amazing and make sure everyone is taken care of and are having a GREAT TIME!! This truly is one of the BEST DIVE BARS IN ATLANTA.
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
Dusty and dirty, there is a TON of character here at this very local watering hole. I highly recommend. Lots of great people, too, very friendly here. Downsides: all the beer is in cans, nothing on tap, AND the bathroom door doesn't actually shut, so that's weird and pervy.

Dan W.

Yelp
Greatest bar in Georgia-this place is an institution and I have been going there for 25 years. Thanks to the entire staff and keep the bar rolling!

reid s.

Yelp
This place is absolutely ridiculous. I'm convinced they are in on all of the valuables being stolen in this bar. My phone was taken (gone for 45 min) and then a random "magically found" it. I thanked him only to realize some kind of encryption was used to unlock my phone, where they proceeded to pay themselves all of my money. Only way your phone gets encrypted is with a computer. There's got to be some sketchy stuff going on in the back room. Do not go here. Any other bar is better. They're running a large scale thief operation in this bar.

Sarah S.

Yelp
First and last time going last night. My wallet was stolen from my purse and my friends phone was stolen. Listen to these reviews and do not go here.
google avatar

Yelp
So i have never given a 1 star review but this was just. I entered 5 Paces and ordered 2 Coors Lights and two shots, handed the bartender $40 and he walked off and never returned w my change. When i asked for the manager they pointed to a spiked haired gentleman that was Bartending in the corner. I patiently waited and asked for his assistance. He looked at me and shrugged his shoulders. I then handed him $100 and told him that if that's how they do business and if they needed money that bad then here you go. As a hospitality industry owner and employee i was very disappointed with my experience last night.
google avatar

Clara T.

Yelp
Great bar for any night and I love Nicole the blonde bartender she is greatest! They have a great music selection and the staff is always on point

Jamie W.

Yelp
LADIES!!!!! Don't wear open purses!!! My phone got stolen twice this year there. Many reviews have said phones being stolen.. Just be careful!

Paula B.

Yelp
It's too bad you can't give a place zero stars. This place is TERRIBLE! Family member possibly drugged and phone stolen. Took thousands of dollars. Bar nor police are helpful. Suggest you leave all valuables at home. It's a gamble, only take what you are willing to lose. BEWARE!
google avatar

Carrie Neal W.

Yelp
I adore the great Kit F. but sometimes he doesn't know how to have a good time. Or where to do it. And sometimes, when the mood and night are right - that can be at 5P. It's not everyone's scene, and it's not always mine, but I will tell you this: go with someone who knows everyone who works there, and go on a nice night when you can be on the patio and enjoy the night air and said employees are speedy about getting your drinks . . . you'll dig this place, I'm pretty sure. I have a soft spot for divey bars, the older school, the better. I think it goes back to the fact that one of my best friends from growing up is the daughter of one of the original owners of the late Mike and Angelo's, one of the BEST EVER divey bars, home of Swami, a place with a fantabulous patio, etc etc . . . and 5P is a place that has that same . . . vibe . . . in certain ways. Maybe it's just cause I grew up here, who knows, but when the stars align, there's something just freaking cool about the places that have been around forever, have dirt around the edges and don't look bright and shiny in the daylight (or maybe ever if you're honest, but they somehow seem to on that fun Friday or Saturday night, you know?) and the beer's cold, bartenders who know you will frequently spot you a shot (or three), and the people watching is always a hoot. That's one version of my Atlanta, and I love it. Last night was exactly the kind of night at 5P that made me remember why it's so good to know what that feeling is like.
google avatar

Tom N.

Yelp
Terrible. Bar tender kept bouncing customer songs from jukebox. Fine if she gives money back. She just cared to play her songs. No customer care here. Nasty attitude.
google avatar

Claire J.

Yelp
This is a GREAT place if you want your phone stolen. There's actually an underground ring there I swear. Otherwise it's the most fun bar in buckhead! Just keep your valuables in your hand. I know 6 people who have gotten their phone stolen.
google avatar

Adrienne S.

Yelp
NEVER GO HERE. YOU WILL BE ROBBED. I had my phone stolen here last Saturday night right out of my purse. I for some reason decided to come back here a week later because it's popular with my friends and my phone was stolen AGAIN. I strongly believe it is an inside job. Four of my friends also had their phones stolen in the same night. The bar staff did not care when we alerted them and reading similar reviews of people being pick pocketed makes me strongly believe it is the employees of this bar.
google avatar

Rob G.

Yelp
Was looking to kill an hour and landed on this spot. Early in the night didn't have too much of the frat boy crowd yet, welcome escape to drink some cheap beer ($5) and catch up with a buddy. Nice patio area on the outside and lots of space for different groups. Easy to walk here from the rest of bar scene and a great place to spend a warm night. I imagine it fills up with the typical Buckhead crowd late in the night so if that's not your scene prob look elsewhere

Abbey G.

Yelp
Phone stolen from my purse last night. When I told security they laughed and said it happens every weekend. Apparently it is a joke to them. From the rest of these reviews it sounds like this has been happening for a while and management just doesn't care, or maybe they are in on it.
google avatar

Craig Z.

Yelp
Most of what people said in these reviews I would agree with. It is what it is, and it was a lot of fun. They had a great band there the Friday night that I went, playing a great variety of hits and crowd pleasers. Not sure if the bars next door are the same or just connected, but I enjoyed wandering around, etc. It isn't a trendy place, or a cocktail bar, but if you are looking for a great time in a divey dump, I highly recommend.
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
Demographic: You've graduated from a big southern college (UGA, Auburn, etc). You recently landed a job in Atlanta, yet you still want to feel like you are right back in that same college town where you came from. This little "oasis" in the middle of buckhead is your spot. If you have stopped living in that southern college town fantasy or never lived in it to begin with, this place will look silly. Drink selection? Forget about it, you will be drinking bud light to chase the cheap vodka. Service is so bad, it's hard to even put a grasp on it.

Carly R.

Yelp
MY WALLET WAS STOLEN IN MY ZIPPED PURSE! My whole life was in that wallet I'm never going back here it is soooo sketch. A lot of my friends have had their phones stolen here too multiple times. I don't understand...
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
This is by far the best dive bar in Buckhead! Shana and Todd make you feel like family! Great attractive staff! They have live music and a DJ every weekend! Something to offer everyone. Best happy hour spot too!
google avatar

Cari O.

Yelp
So someone referred this place to me and I can tell You, the yelp Picture did not make me want to go. It's in Buckhead on bar row. Lots of people of all ages going from bar to bar. We hung out out back where Riley served up Some delicious and strong drinks!!! The regulars here were super friendly! I felt like I knew everyone when it was time to go. There are 3 rooms lots of TVs but no soap in the women's bathroom The bouncers were really nice, they did not try to intimidate the guests which is often happens at bars like these. I enjoyed the music, drinks and the good company.

Sarah N.

Yelp
Like many of the other reviews left on Five Paces... my phone was stolen out of my purse here the other night. Seems to be a big problem here and they haven't done anything about it so I would avoid going here
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Impossible to find a better bar. The place feels like cheers. Shana and Todd take great care of everyone. If you don't try this place. Your missing out on a hidden gem.

Moni C.

Yelp
Never go to this bar ever. My phone was stolen from my CLOSED ZIPPED purse while I was wearing it. The bar staff have to know or are working with the people because it apparently happens often and they do not care. Do not go to this bar unless you want to be pick-pocketed!!!!! When I spoke with the bar staff they said that "oh the phone is probably on it's way to China". They lack of care and interest of taking care of their customer is beyond horrible. This bar is ruining the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
For a guaranteed good time always trust the advice of people on street corners. In this case it was Jason W. and we ran into him as we were parking for an after dinner drink following Yelp Eats! at Valenza. Since Kit F. had my back and Pam L. was holding his purse I knew we'd be covered in case any of the Bulldog fans got rowdy. After we entered a few things entered my mind... Why is it so damn bright in here?!? Who are all these assholes? And why are they all wearing boat shoes?!? This is an odd place. It was kinda like taking Masquerade and turning it on its side, leaving Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell right next to each other. Heaven for me was at the far left bar where they played every of my favorite top 40 homo dance tunes... Purgatory was in the middle and the music was some kind of hip hop slop being dictated by a very intelligent looking jukebox... Hell was at the top of the stair (yes, a singular stair) where the live band was performing. It was really kind of funny watching Jason W. try to mack on some girls. Even funnier was that one of the girls had the price tag sticking out of her dress. Apparently she planned to return it to Filene's Basement the following day to get her $18 back. Don't worry, Pam's got a picture of it. Oh, and the drinks sucked.

Yelp
I love 5 paces.. after work at 7 pm mid week or 1 am on the weeks ends. This is my home Away from home. Staff is amazing (Dave, jack) they have 3 separate sections and there is something for everyone. Not even including the patio! Awesome vibes. Good prices and always feel safe. What else could a girl want?

Yelp
If you're looking for the popped-collar, PBR slugging, yuppie college boy crowd, you've hit the jackpot! After living in NYC, where the boys wear tighter jeans than the ladies, and the slicked back metro man look reigns surprise, 5Ps is a pleasant surprise. Granted, if you're over the age of 23, you're probably much too old to be rockin' out to the half-decent cover bands, but I assure you it's still a good time. The other side of the bar has a more sophisticated, older crowd (read 25ish bunch), but don't be surprised when you run into a small circle of 40somethings hanging at the bar, dressed in slinky nonsense, as though donning the trashy getups and drinking the natty light will somehow time warp them back to their "better years." Ladies - if you're looking extra hot, you may have the great pleasure of being "cupped" (note: not groped) by the one and only, very special HOLLYWOOD who trapses back and forth across the crowded bar, looking for the next lady friend's bum to target. Not so magical, but definitely a most memorable occasion. Mixed reviews be damned! This is a great end to a drunken nonsensical evening, and I'll come back time and again to throw back a shot with my fave bartender Danny any day.
google avatar

Candace L.

Yelp
My favorite dive bar . - NOT ON WEEKENDS. Weekend crowd is completely different than the middle of the week happy hour business lot. Very low key, this place has been around for years. You can smoke inside, and you never know how crazy or unpredictable the crowd is gonna get. Nice mixed crowd during the week nights, and afternoon hours. During the weekend late night, the atmosphere turns college fraternity central - would avoid going during those hours. Get to know the bartenders! Drinks are cheap - but tip the bartenders, and there even cheaper!

Yelp
Five Paces has to be taken with a grain of salt...followed by a shot. When I first moved back to the South from boston, my uber preppy "from atlanta" friends dragged me here. And well those are the people who hang out there. Being from Charleston, SC I am familiar with this scene so its fine. The bar is dirty, the bathrooms are gross, but the deck on the back is fun. This place is great if you are with a group of friends. I always seem to run into people I know. Yes they play journey too much, yes the bartenders are slow. But the crowd is fun and ready to have a good time. Minus the occasional cougar or two, the age range is 21-35 it is a younger set for sure. If designer labels offend you, especially designer clothing purchased by someones rich dad, then this place will really bother you. Most people in here have wealthy parents, and may or may not be doing anything with their own lives. I guess this place could really bother a hipster or someone awfully serious. This place is it for the preppy blue-blood southern happenings.
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
Check your dignity at the door... just be sure to pick it up on your way out. 5P is hilarious, but it can't possibly be fun if you're sober. The bar tar will ruin your shoes, the smoke will leave you gasping for air, the roof leaks before, during & after a rainy night, the bathrooms are disgusting, and the people are... interesting. But, as my friend says, you just have to take it for what it is and you'll have a ton of fun. I still can't get over the fact that I meet some of the same people time and time again, and each time, I get the impression that they think we're meeting for the first time. It's official- at 26, I'm about three years too old for this place!
google avatar

Suzanne E.

Yelp
What a freaking dump. One doesn't expect to find such a dump in Buckhead, but this place personifies one. Not only does it stink when you go in (they have a cigar bar that smells like old cigar smoke, wet leather, and dried Ben Gay) but their service sucks. I've never been treated so rudely as I was the other night, and by the manager, no less. He said, "It's our style to be rude. That's who we are." Okay.... The only reason this place is popular is because all the young kids who've gotten drunk at nicer places go there to finish up their night and "slum". Have at it...I'll never go back.
google avatar

steven c.

Yelp
This place is great if you're drunk, and horrible if you're sober. There is no space, and walking from the front to back is a serious undertaking. That said, there are lots of inebriated guys and girls that are typically in good spirits. Prices are a little below Buckhead average, but the biggest savings arises from the difficulty to get to the bar.
