Fleetwood Diner - Review - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Ann Arbor is on the receiving end of a lot of hippie jokes, but that’s expected from a liberal arts school that has a whole weekend dedicated to legalizing marijuana. Whatever your feelings on that, one thing we can agree on is the Hippie Hash at the 24 hour Fleetwood Diner – eggs, potatoes, and a mix of veggies topped with melty feta cheese. Pro tip – make it a Gyro Hippie Hash. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Google
It was good, but a bit pricey for what you get....a relatively small bowl of chili for $7? But other than that the atmosphere was pretty chill and was covered in stickers which were fun to read. The Greek salad with beets is pretty good, around $10. The beets - so so good, just wished it came with more than 3 pieces lol. The Greek salad also comes with a pita bread. Also ordered the Reuben which was also solid.

We were very enthusiastically greeted at the door, we were served fast and the food came out fast. The Chicken Club Pita was well seasoned but a bit dry. They have a bathroom in the basement. It’s small but functional if a little unkempt. It appears to be mostly for employees.

Google
Absolutely delicious! This place is a real classic diner. It's small and in the winter there aren't as many places to sit. In the warm weather you can go outside. It's definitely not fancy or luxurious. I think they have the best pancakes in the area.

Google
Weird, cool little diner located in Ann Arbor, MI! This place has a reputation for giving very generous portions! Fleetwood Diner is best known for its Hippie Hashbrowns but almost anything on the menu is good! A very popular place, getting in to actually dine can be tricky, so I recommend getting your order to go. Parking is also challenging, but don't get discouraged, something will open up, even if you end up walking it's worth it! Staff is friendly and helpful. Food is hot, fresh and well prepared!

Google
I don't usually write reviews, but this place is amazing. The Meaty Hippie Hash is stellar. The choice of music is wonderful. The atmosphere was amazing, and it was very cool to look around at all the stickers located inside and outside the diner. Fast and excellent service. Food was filling, well priced, and most of all, delicious. If I happen to pass through Ann Arbor again, I will be stopping by. Thank you for the wonderful breakfast.

Google
Nice title joint. Waitress and cook were very friendly and fast. I had the club with chili cheese fries. Simple enough. Sandwich was good but the chili tasted like cheap canned chili.

Google
This will always be my favorite 24 hr food stop anywhere. They will always have the best food I've ever had at an affordable rate. With smiles and loving staff, I give this a 10000/5 stars. Keep kicking butt you guys!!!

First time here—33 years after graduating from Michigan! Now wishing I could go back in time and enjoy the hippie hash again and again! They are so good. Can’t wait to go back!

Yelp
Food: Onion rings are plentiful, super delicious--crispy with just the right amount of batter (light), and not too much grease, but enough to satisfy a diner-style onion ring hunger. Half bacon half ground beef cheese burger is delightful, crispy around the edges and the veggies and mayo always make a burger great. Comes with mayo, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions and pickles. Excellent winter time or even anytime comfort food. The short order cook here is amazing! Service: Excellent, in and out in about 10 minutes but it was a very slow Wednesday evening around dinner time inlet November. Atmosphere: Funky with its distinctive Ann Arbor flair dating back to the '50s or '60s, yet cozy like every diner should be. No wonder this is an Ann Arbor icon! An oddity: My burger came with strips of bacon on top, which I did not order. Maybe the cook misheard me and gave me the regular cheese burger with bacon added? Either way I really enjoyed this meal!

Yelp
Worst service I've ever received in my life. The server couldn't be bothered with any one of the customers just trying to get some breakfast. She just sat on one of the stools talking to the cook all morning. Didn't check on me once. Don't go here.

Yelp
I FINALLY went to the Fleetwood Diner. I never went there when I was in school in Ann Arbor 41+ years ago, so I thought it was about time I tried it. I was actually a little torn between going there & going to Krazy Jim's Blimpie Burgers because that's right next door. But, I decide to stay true to my original decision, and I'm glad I did. At first, I went inside, but it seemed cramped and a little dark, so since it was a beautiful day, I decided to eat outside. I ordered the Meaty Hippie Hash. I didn't realize it came with an egg -- the hash itself would have been plenty! But they made the egg exactly how I like it -- over hard & very overdone for most people, with slightly crispy edges. It was perfect! It came with 2 pieces of toast (I had to ask for jelly) and a mount of hashbrowns with broccoli and chopped corned beef and a sprinkling of cheese. It was so good. And since I only ate half, I had plenty or the next day. That was fortunate, as it wasn't as "cheap" as I'd expect a diner to be, but since it covered two meals, it was worth it. The only real negatives were that the server seemed a bit distracted. For example, I asked her for a glass of ice & she did comment on how the ice melts really fast, but she never did bring it. I also didn't like that the credit card reader thing starts with 25% tip & goes UP from there. Tipping is entirely out of hand at that point. Unfortunately for me, I chose "custom tip" thinking it would be a percentage & not a dollar amount, and being bad at math & a little flustered, I ended up tipping too much.

Yelp
I've been to this diner twice, once for brunch and the other after going out at night. It has all you want for dinner vibes, good graffiti, stickers, greasy food, barstools, etc. When I went for brunch it was great I really enjoyed my meal and the outdoor patio seating was nice under the roof part. Going at night is an entirely different experience haha. I'd say the place is great for a diner but the service is a little slow. I think part of that is because it's always full and there wait staff and cooks are stretched a bit thin. This is just a fair warning that if the place is busy, the meal won't be as quick.

Yelp
Locals and travelers enjoy the hippie hash. I usually prefer something simple as a plate of eggs and toast. This small iconic 24 hour diner has been in AA a while. Small and cozy, there are stickers everywhere to keep your wandering eyes exploring.

Yelp
This is exactly the place you're craving at 2am after the bars shut down, which is perfect because it's open 24/7. Typical dinner food, and their greasy breakfast food always is exactly what you need. It's definitely small on the inside, a few tables but can't sit large groups. I loved how they have decal stickers covering their walls from people putting them on there, it's fun to read them all! Our waitress was not the friendliest. She was actually kind of rude at times, but she probably deals with drunk college kids so often that she has to be.

James J.

Yelp
Order took forever, they don't let you wait indoors but won't call out your name so I got my order cold not worth it for food either for this level of service.
google avatar

Yelp
My second visit here. This time I dined in. Great all meat omelette! Since I passed on toast and potatoes, she took a little off the bill. So nice! Really cool vibe inside the restaurant. I'll be back!
google avatar

Diego A.

Yelp
My lady loved the corned beef hash at this place. Service was what you'd expect at a good diner: chill, matter of fact, down to earth, and friendly overall. Loved the stickers on the wall. Gives the place a kind of disturbed diner aesthetic. Bacon burger was good. Also, you gotta love a 24/7 diner!
google avatar

Yelp
Now this is what i call original USA diner. So glad they are still around. Delicious breakfast this morning. The omelette and hash were done well. This is a got to come back and eat here kind of place. Super friend staff and great chef Andy!

Yelp
I love Fleetwood Diner so much and I hope it stays forever on this beautiful little corner of downtown Ann Arbor forever as well! It's a perfect little dinner and has the most unique charm that I find myself bringing people here as one of the must-eat stops if they've never been to Ann Arbor before. Yes, it's diner food, but it's just an quintessential part of Ann Arbor! The walls are covered with stickers and you're allowed to put one of your own up as well. Their hash is to DIE for and definitely worth being on the Ann Arbor bucket list that my friend and I had for our senior year at Michigan. It's perfect late night food, since they're open to the early hours of the morning, breakfast food, and all day food. A ton of people come here, naturally because of its hours of operations, after a long night out to sop up some of the alcohol in their system and I'm sure it's great for that. For me personally, since I don't drink, I can attest to the fact that the food here is good drunk or sober and is just proper diner food, but just with that extra little something that makes it shine apart from any diner kind of place! Love you, Fleetwood!
google avatar

Joe J.

Yelp
Solid menu, great-tasting food. The 50/50 burger is the bomb! Service is friendly, and the atmosphere is simple and welcoming. Love all the stickers with retro charm!

Rodney G.

Yelp
Great food at a reasonable price for what you get. Definitely a stop in Ann Arbor if you are looking for quality and value.

Yelp
Perfect place for a 1am diner run. The place is small so sometimes it's a long wait. Don't do takeout because they will make you wait outside, even if it's super cold. The food is really yummy. It's not the best food I've ever had by any means, but it's yummy nonetheless. The hippie hash is great, as well as the chocolate chip pancakes. The place is so homey, stickers all over, and just makes you feel happy.

Yelp
when you wake in at 2am and you can not go back to sleep where do you end up? Me I am visiting Ann Arbor and now I am visiting Fleetwood diner. If the hot coffee does not doesn't transition you to complete consciences the music will. This place is fantastic. It has about six table tops and 5 counter seats. They must be extremely busy when school is in session because it's packed now at 3:30am. I just grabbed the meaty hippy hash. It was reeeeaaal good and I would certainly get that again. The burger I would not.

Sam F.

Yelp
The omelette was solid, the hash browns crispy. But you don't go to one of the few still-remaining twenty-four hour diners for a Michelin star meal. You go for upholstered counter-style diner seating, an excellent atmosphere, and a sense that this type of thing should still exist. And, without a doubt, Fleetwood diner makes that argument well: it's easy to get lost staring at all of the stickers on the walls, accumulated over the years, or just enjoy the bottomless coffee served in truly classic mugs (with a spoon, of course). There's hot sauce and jam pre-stocked at every table; the inside space feels slightly cramped but is still very much enjoyable and not too loud. We visited in the morning, around 8am, and had an excellent and filling breakfast of eggs, omelettes, bacon, hash-browns, and toast. The price is probably in line with everything these days, which is to say slightly more than what you'd expect. The service is also exemplary (and what one would want): sit at any open table, order quickly (no nonsense), and pay at the cash register. Among American-style diners, this is an excellent example. Would recommend!

Yelp
Hard to believe, I have lived in Ann Arbor for 18 years and this is my first venture to Fleetwood diner. I am sorry it took me this long, a really solid place decent prices good quantity, and quality of food. It is in downtown off Ashley street, which convenience wise not the best unless you live near downtown, it is a little annoying to get to. However, after eating here, I will make an effort to come more. We came at 10:45am on a Monday so the place was not overly packed, but still a decent amount of people. The Greek breakfast was solid, I love how they make their hash browns crispy, the gyro meat was solid and a decent quantity of it for the price. My wife devoured her hippie has and gyro meat. The service was quick and efficient. Only knock on this place is inside is not that big so when it is crowded with students easy to get on top of each other especially in the winter time.

Chloe M.

Yelp
After a long day spent in Ann Arbor, this was definitely worth the 15-minute walk to get there! The food was amazing, and the service was very friendly. I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a good place to eat in town!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Burger was very good, and the half & half burger was absolutely delicious! (Half ground beef & half ground bacon) Ambience was very cool. Tiny diner filled with stickers. Decent amount of seating outside though.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
I love Fleetwood! It's awesome to have a traditional diner situation as a fun mix up from the normal Ann Arbor restaurant scene. The menu is pretty big so there is definitely something for everyone. My favorite is the grilled cheese because it's double decker (three pieces of bread with cheese between the layers). My friend I went with got the pancakes which were wonderful. Definitely recommend for a quick bite or late night snack!
google avatar

Homer M.

Yelp
It a small restaurant but it's a hot spot in the locals in A2. My son complimented his Hippie Hash and I had a coney hot dog and jalapeños poppers that were delicious. I recommend trying the chili sauce as a topping the poppers. I recommend the sell the nostalgia t-shirts, they look cool.
google avatar

Jimmy M.

Yelp
Always good food and love the atmosphere, I personally always get the paddy melt and it's delicious everytime.

Paul E.

Yelp
Food was great. Plenty to eat. Service was very good. We'll be back again. Seating a little limited but worth waiting to find a seat.
google avatar

Conner B.

Yelp
This is a greasy spoon diner with few frills, but just the comfort food you need. I wouldn't recommend the onion rings because the breading was a bit heavy (go next door to blimpy's instead!) - but the burger was classic diner style and hit the spot. I usually stop here for a big weekend breakfast but wanted to try dinner. Not bad, not great. The service was friendly but I can't imagine a time where 25/30/50% preset tip options would be appropriate for a diner. I'm looking forward to stopping back for more sandwiches!
google avatar

Raymond T.

Yelp
Hospitality: 3/5 Quality: 3/5 Value: 3.7/5 The taste is mid. The place can easily get crowded, but it's open 24/7 unlike most places. I left the place feeling hungry after eating a gyro. It has a lot of historical meaning in Ann Arbor, but its not my first choice to eat.
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
Fleetwood is an Ann Arbor classic, you have to visit at least once. That said, if you're looking for a fine dining experience - go somewhere else. Fleetwood is a classic diner with an eclectic feel, covered floor to ceiling in stickers, and it draws in a unique crowd. They know their niche and own it - greasy and delicious food, served with a side of attitude. I personally find it endearing and fitting for the overall vibe. It's also 24 hours, making it a great option after a night out or a marathon study session. You have to try the famous hippie hash - it's famous for a reason! If you don't want all the extras, the side of hippie hash is a great option. It's still a portion big enough to be a standalone meal, but without the eggs or toast on the side. Lastly, they have a restroom available downstairs - wouldn't recommend using it if it can be avoided.

Zane M.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely amazing! Everytime we are in the area we are stopping for the gyro meat breakfast that they serve! It's a very cool spot and the service is fast and reliable.

Gilbert G.

Yelp
Great diner in A2. Place was jammed for brunch but worth the 15 minute wait on a beautiful Saturday. Team members were friendly and efficient. Food took a while to come out but classic in-house corned beef hippie hash was terrific with food overflowing the plate. Right on!

Hashem A.

Yelp
Nasty ass chicken idk what is going on here with it the fries was good tho. Smh I ate two pieces

Gabby K.

Yelp
This place looks and feels like you're on another planet. It is small, but the ambiance and vibe of the diner is otherworldly. We sat outside on a warm weekday morning and it was absolutely perfect. Our waitress was incredibly kind, answered any questions we had. We loved reading all the stickers as we waited for our breakfast. It felt like we weren't waiting long before our food came out despite there being a decent amount of people coming and going. I really wish I had taken a photo of the food we ordered. I got the #7 French toast and bacon and my husband got the homemade corned beef hash with eggs. Everything was just beautiful, perfectly cooked, hot and fresh and beyond delicious. How have I lived in Ann Arbor 6 years and never been to this place? I think about it at least once a day. I can't wait to go back. Best French toast I've ever had in my life, no joke.

Yelp
Fleetwood Diner qualifies as a divey diner - An image that is shamelessly embraces. The seating area consists of a cramped counter where you can watch cooks at work on the flat top, a small indoor seating area, and ample outdoor space. The walls are filled with stickers, added by guests I presume, and that are beginning to creep onto window panes. Open 24 hours, Fleetwood draws an eclectic crowd, becoming busier as the night wears on and bar goers and the like wonder in for their food fix. The menu essentially consists of breakfast items, burgers, and sandwiches. Of course, they are known for their "hippie hash" - A delightful mix of chopped veggies over hash browns and topped generously with feta. On every visit, I order the same thing: Gyro hippie hash breakfast. It's so good that I can't bear to try something else! And, coffee - I love diner coffee and this is on point. I have to believe that it's the brown diner mug that makes it. Overall, Fleetwood Diner is an old school diner that is quintessential Ann Arbor and definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Vladimir S.

Yelp
Quaint, to the point. Resembles the good ol' burger joints back in the day. Kitchen and menu is small and to the point. The staff works incredibly hard given the tight quarters. There's only one stove/range in there which is stunning. That so much quality food comes off of one cooktop. I ordered two burgers, and onion rings. I had a great lunch. The father/son duo who were working took really good care of me and the other customers. I could taste the quality and care put into it. Even though the cooks fling food out fast: they come from the old generation of quality, fast, short order cooking. No complaints, maybe the diner could be a bit cleaner, but who cares? All around I really like Fleetwood Diner. I'd recommend anyone in Ann Arbor try this place.
google avatar

Gurleen K.

Yelp
The hippie hash and tuna melt were incredible! Kind of the perfect embodiment of a local diner that's full of life with students!
google avatar

Autumn L.

Yelp
Fantastic diner food with authentic vibes. 50-50 burger and hippie hash are a must! Service makes me feel welcomed.

Tay B.

Yelp
honestly I went in this place to wait for my Uber home because it was cold outside and raining . I ended up getting a burger just because I hadn't ate all day but the burger turned out really amazing. Every ingredient on this burger was FRESH . I also got a fry with my burger which also hit the spot . the fries were hot and not greasy. I can't wait to go back and order some breakfast or something . 10/10 I recommend yall stop by . THEIE OPEN 24/7

Craig F.

Yelp
The service actually can't get any worse. Feel like fighting with the "cooks" (not chefs), the waitress and the influx of drunk people?? Look no further!!!! Come here!!!

Rico S.

Yelp
You can get 24hour food is the only positive, the lady who works there with red hair acts like she owns the place and every single customer is a inconvenience and like they are stupid. The environment is extremely dirty the floors are covered in food every time I go there. The only good thing I can say other than the hours is the chef is pretty decent and always has a good attitude. Lately there has been a "homeless man who needs help" right outside who will chase you down the road to hound you for money that's actually for crack.
google avatar

Justin D.

Yelp
If you have a sticker fetish this is your place, you can stick them where ever you want. Food good

Elijah H.

Yelp
Great breakfast before a Michigan football game! The portions are generous and quality of food is very good.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Fleetwood Diner is the place to go if you're craving breakfast foods late into the night. My go to is their hippie hash with corned beef! I appreciate that they have really nice diner aesthetic. I must say though, if you're trying to get a meal while sober this may not be the best place to go, but it's a great place to grab food after a night out drinking.
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
Pretty solid diner food. Came late after a Michigan game at about midnight. Had the Gyro Hippie Hash Breakfast and it was very good, exactly what you'd expect. Also had a coke that was completely flat, but even though we didn't bring it up we weren't charged. Everyone was working their butt off to try and get everyone served, but I can't in good conscious give a place five stars when I had to wait about 80 minutes for my food after I ordered. Not the employees fault, clearly a limitation of the diner itself, but that's what I'm reviewing, right? Definitely worth it if you don't have a super long wait.
google avatar

Davontae F.

Yelp
First things first a friend and I stopped in for food here on a whim. Not going to lie we were drawn in by the beautiful aroma of the food being cooked inside :) I've heard great things about this place so I'm glad I was able to finally try it out. Both my friend and I wanted a afternoon breakfast and as you can see in the photos I enjoyed my meal! I ordered the short stack with scrambled eggs and hash browns! It was perfect for my hunger! I highly recommend this place especially if you're ever in need of food anytime of the day. They're open 24 hours a day!
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Their hippie hash is second to none, get it with an egg over medium and you can't go wrong. I wish they allowed 24/7 delivery because I work nights and have some crazy hours.
google avatar

Theodrick D.

Yelp
I'm a breakfast lover. Theirs is OKAY. No banana pancakes though. The "hippy" hash is okay, just not enough broccoli, for sure.

Malik H.

Yelp
Fleetwood is an area staple, it's where you go for a simple breakfast, a good burger, snack on the way to class or on your way home for work. It's THE place. Good peeps behind the counter, streamlined payment options and inside and outside dining. It takes a little while because it's all there in front of you, you see the cooks make the food, you can hear the fryers working behind the music. It's a small space inside but it's local and it's worth it.
google avatar

Jeongmin H.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast but everything was so filling that it ended up being more like a brunch meal. The hippie hash is a must try!! So flavorful and delicious. Great service as well.
google avatar

Carolyn W.

Yelp
You shouldn't expect anything more than fast, delicious, greasy food when you come to Fleetwood. Fleetwood is definitely not somewhere you expect polite service or excellent cleanliness. Often times, the floor is wet & muddy, and the wait staff are grumpy from all the annoying, drunk people they've had to deal with all night. If you're coming past midnight, I would prepare for the noisy, intoxicated crowd. Now the highlight here is the food. The Hippie Hash is a MUST-get. It's basically hash browns with feta cheese and broccoli. In fact, this dish makes you feel less bad about eating greasy food since there's so much green in it. The quality of food is consistent, and I really couldn't ask for more. Did I mention that it's open 24 hours? Nothing better than a 3am visit to Fleetwood after a night out.

Charles J.

Yelp
my wife just ordered from there. she saw the owner pick something out of her food after he boxed it up and ate it. wife said something to the server. the server replied they don't do that shit there. the owner then called my wife a bitch and told her to never come back. we will not
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
This is a classic Ann Arbor experience that merits a visit at least once every so often. The ambiance has remained classic, with stickers all over the walls, many bringing to mind different features of UM and AA. Contrary to popular misconceptions, the food was definitely NOT greasy. I had Hippy Hash, a specialty. Next time au would add gyro meat to it. There is attentive and friendly, fun table service. It was a wonderful morning.
