The Best Luxury Hotels to Book in France in 2023 - AFAR

"There are hotels with destination restaurants and iconic chefs and then there are destination restaurants that happen to have rooms. Fleur de Loire is a labor of love from chef Christophe Hay on the Loire River that falls somewhere in between. Following his time at La Maison d’à Côté, the award-winning restaurant and inn he ran for eight years in nearby Montlivault, he aimed bigger, taking over this 54,000-square-foot former hospice from the 17th century, erected at the behest of Louis XIII’s brother, Gaston d’Orléans. Hay turned it into both the new home for his fine dining restaurant as well as a Relais & Châteaux hotel & spa. The gastronomically focused hotel offers 44 rooms and suites, plus 2 multicourse restaurants and a pastry shop, that use produce from his 2.5-acre permaculture garden about near the property. A Sisley spa features an indoor and outdoor pool. Environmental considerations go beyond limiting waste and working with local ingredients: The hotel runs on a closed water cooling system that doesn’t require contact with the air. Reservoirs for rainwater allow staff to water the garden while the energy for the building is sourced entirely from wind power. In the guest rooms, amenities come from a local soapmaker, the Savonnerie des Muids, whose products are composed of oils, vinegars, and honey from the Loire (they’re presented in refillable containers). Wood used for furniture throughout the property was drawn from certified sustainable forestry operations. The design scheme, dreamed up by the architect and decorator Caroline Tissier, masterfully evokes the serenity of the river. She made liberal use of wood, brass, and stone and played up a soft aquatic-gold color palette in common areas and restaurants. Rooms feature carpets and linens in sandy tones and nature-inspired custom wallpapers—ideal spots to rest after a memorable meal." - Lindsey Tramuta, Mary Winston Nicklin

Great experience overall! Staff are very helpful and they even managed to remember our room number and the time of our train! Breakfast is great! The selection is quite big compared to most European hotels, but quite small if you’re used to other cultures. Nonetheless, they offer great coffee, hot chocolate, fruit and pastries! Definitely quality over quantity. I wouldn’t recommend the spa though (the free one, not paid messages). I’m not sure if it is a cultural difference but we were freezing throughout the whole experience and the shower area is not ideal bc it has almost no place for you to hang your towel and stuff. But this alone will not stop me from recommending this hotel! We loved it and a genuine thank you to all the staff!

After staying at a variety of boutique hotels in the Loire Valley it was wonderful to stay at a luxury level property. Staff were extremely attentive. Beds were quite comfortable. The hotel was extremely clean. They had valet parking, which was very welcome after struggling with some of the small offsite parking that is available at other areas in the Loire valley. Breakfasts were very nice. We were overall very pleased with our stay.

Fabulous stay - fresh, new hotel - delightful staff, manager, restaurants, and setting. Best hotel we have ever stayed in (been going places for forty years now). Stand alone restaurant is just perfect - fine food, very pleasant staff and comfortable. |Two starred main restaurant is just a wonder. Fine in every respect. Warm staff. Personable chef. Hotel manager, Kim, was just a gem - pleasant and helpful all the time. Go for a very special place to stay in chateau land of the middle ages.

We stayed at the Fleur de Loire for the first week of our honeymoon and it did not disappoint! Everything was top shelf - the room, the spa/wellness center, the restaurant, the bar, but most of all the staff. Superb experience from start to finish. We will definitely return. Thank you to all of the employees for making our stay so special.

A Beyond Five-Star Experience at Fleur de Loire My family and I had the most extraordinary vacation at Fleur de Loire, a hotel that epitomizes luxury and sophistication. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with unparalleled warmth and care. The gracious hotel manager, Ms. Lucie Jarry, personally welcomed us and provided an exclusive introduction to this magnificent property, leaving an indelible impression on us from the start. Having traveled extensively and experienced some of the finest hotels worldwide, we can confidently say that Fleur de Loire surpassed our expectations in every possible way. The property itself is a masterpiece—stunningly designed, impeccably maintained, and exuding an atmosphere of refined elegance. We stayed in the family two-story suite, which was not only perfectly suited to our family of four but also an absolute delight. The spacious layout, thoughtful design, and playful charm made it an unforgettable part of our stay. The hotel’s thoughtfulness was truly exceptional. Prior to our arrival, we mentioned that it was our daughter’s 10th birthday. To our delight, they surprised her with a beautifully crafted chocolate dessert and a charming stuffed animal, creating a magical moment that touched our hearts. This thoughtful gesture perfectly encapsulated the extraordinary level of care and attention to detail that defines Fleur de Loire. The culinary experience was nothing short of exceptional. Chef Christophe Hay is a true artist, and every meal was a celebration of flavor and quality. From breakfast to lunch, dinner, and the divine patisserie creations, we were consistently in awe of the impeccable execution and extraordinary flavors. The dining experiences at Fleur de Loire are among the best we have ever encountered. The spa was a serene sanctuary—a haven of tranquility that offered a much-needed retreat, beautifully designed and utterly soothing. The hotel’s location is ideal for exploring the enchanting beauty of the Loire Valley, making it a perfect base for discovering the region’s rich heritage and charm. We are already planning our return and remain profoundly grateful to the incredible staff, whose dedication and attention to detail made our stay so memorable. Fleur de Loire is a true gem—an achievement of luxury, hospitality, and elegance. Congratulations to this remarkable hotel for creating such an unparalleled experience.

A beautiful property. Excellent restaurants on site. Ideal location in near proximity to Blois by a short walk, and easy drive to Chambord and other beautiful chateaux in the area. We really enjoyed the wellness area and beautiful facilities including pools (indoor and outdoor), sauna, hammam, and whirlpool - a great way to start or end the day. Many compliments to Chef Hay and his lovely staff for a most enjoyable and relaxing stay.

We arrived spontaneously with our baby in the late afternoon. We stayed one night. The hotel is very exclusive and well maintained. We quickly got an excellent small meal and enjoyed the evening. Breakfast was also brought to our room in the morning - excellent service and quality. We would have liked to have stayed longer as the house and the surrounding area have a lot to offer, but we had to move on. Thank you for the spontaneous highlight.

We just returned from a visit to the Loire Valley and it would not have been the same without our spectacular stay at Fleur de Loire. This resort is very much focused on gastronomy (as it is chef owned and includes his incredible restaurant - separate review), but the most important aspect of this hotel is that they live and breathe excellence in hospitality. They are a Relais and Chateaux property and they deserve every bit of that distinction.||We got off to a very rough start when we arrived after an overnight flight and the room wasn't ready. Completely understandable as we arrived before check in. We were assured that the room was empty and would be cleaned right away, making it available within the hour. We still cannot figure out what went wrong but needless to say we were still sitting (sleeping!) outside their lobby four hours later. While we cannot blame them for not expecting international guests hours ahead of check in time, however, we cannot imagine how it could take over four hours to get one room cleaned, knowing their guests were waiting. No other guests were waiting so we assumed this would be taken care of quickly, but it was not. At this point, we were a little concerned about how this visit would go but I'm happy to say that everyone else at this hotel went above and beyond to make our stay special. From the valet (who apologized for his colleague not being more helpful), to the friendly bartender and most importantly, their AMAZING concierge, Geraldine! I had communicated with Geraldine several times in advance of our visit and she had arranged some lovely activities for us. By far, the highlight of our entire trip was our day with Jean Baptiste, their "cycling guy", who took us on an all day tour of the area with beautiful scenery, tastings at local wineries and inside the forests of the chateaux. One of our best travel days ever! It wasn't just the sights and scenery, Jean Baptiste was the ultimate host (not just a guide, but a host). If you have the time and ability to spend a day with him, you should absolutely do it. Thank you again, Jean Baptiste...we loved our day with you.||The food at the hotel is (obviously) spectacular on all fronts. I will submit a separate review for Christophe Hay (incredible, best meal we've ever had) but we ate all our breakfasts and one dinner at Amour Blanc, their other (more casual) restaurant. We enjoyed everything we ate and the maitre d in the mornings was very friendly and a bundle of energy. Do not miss the breakfast - they have everything you can imagine and you will be full for the day!||Thanks to everyone who made our stay one we will remember!
