Won't forget this place in May. Overheard a group of people who just said, "we have a new Pope! He's American!" While waiting for my husband patiently waiting to be served at the counter to place his order. Yes, you have to wait in line then they'll deliver to the table. Food was good. I do not like the plastic container for the chowder.

If you're in Rhode Island, you gotta stop by Flo's. Their famous fried clams and lobster rolls were exactly what I was looking for when I was craving seafood. The fiery stuffed quahog is also a tasty sidedish along with the clam chowder.

Wow! What a great find!!! Food was amazing, ocean views were great and prices can’t be beat. No wonder they win so many awards. The combo specials are amazing. Or feted the fish sandwich and it hung out both sides of the bun by at least two inches.

The best of the best. We got there when it first opened to avoid any lines and quickly ordered the Large Chowda and the Fisherman’s Plate. The chowda options were regular, creamy, and spicy we ended up going for a creamy and it was a bit soupier than expected. Aside from that there were heaps of clams and potatoes loaded in. Extremely well flavored and not too heavy for the weather. The fisherman’s platter is more than advertised with heaping amounts of fried clams, some scallops, calamari, shrimp and chunk of fish. All the seafood is so fresh and fried well and pair perfectly with their tartar sauce.

This place is exactly what it claims to be - a clam shack. Focus is on fried seafood made fresh at fair prices. We ordered the smaller size of full-bellied clams and fried scallops. The plate of clams and fries that came out would have been more than enough for the 2 of us!! Soooo good! And the scallops were sea scallops - the big ones - not bay scallops which was a great surprise!! We ate outdoors by a giant shark statue. The place has a beach nautical look to it. Food was cooked fresh to order. Oh and they have a small parking lot. It's one block in away from the main beach road, kind of behind the restaurant.

One of my all time favorite spots in Newport! I love their fish and chips combo! It is simple but oh so good! I've been going for two decades now and have always left full and happy! Im so glad they aren't cash only any longer though! That was a major upgrade! My friends have gotten other items there but I stick to what I know and love. Everyone is always so pleased by the prices and quality of the seafood! Every employee here is super sweet! The location is adorable too. It's very low key with the perfect seaside vibe. Parking sucks, but wait out getting a spot. Trust me it's worth it!

Clam chowder sucked. Very watery. I asked Chris the manager if this is normal since it was my first time there. He said yes they don't make it thick. I told him Anthony's, Iggys and Blount are all thick. Don't get the clam chowder. I believe this place is only in business because it is in a tourist area. Fries and fish and chips were extra oily. Clam cakes were good. Beer was good. Stuffed quahog looked like crap.

Flo's Clam Shack hits the spot if you're craving classic New England seafood. The portions are huge, the food comes out hot and fresh, and the stuffed clams and oysters were definite highlights. Great seating upstairs, a good amount of ventilation. Nice sun room with a breeze. Everything had that just-out-of-the-fryer taste, and service was quick even with a crowd. Parking could be better, and we noticed a few younger staff weren't as helpful as they could've been. Some elderly guests had to go up and down the stairs for things that staff easily could have assisted with. Still, the food was solid, the seafood was fresh, and we'll be back for those stuffed clams alone. The crispy fries were also bomb. Maybe have a condiment station upstairs as well.

Food was solid, but the wait for our food was over 30 minutes. We understand that it can get busy in the summer time; however, it's much appreciated if staff informs us of the quantity of orders pending to give us a realistic idea of when we'll receive our food. Clam cakes had a good amount of clam chunks and had crispy edges and chewiness on the inside. Fish n chips was standard, nothing bad but nothing spectacular. Tartar sauce was fresh. Crab meat patty was good. Ambiance is standard for a clam shack, nothing fancy Takeout is recommended to avoid the wait!

Not much has changed since our last visit in 2017 though I recently read that the restaurant changed hands in 2024. One thing that did not change is the clam cakes are light on clam flavor. In addition to the clam cakes, my wife and I each ordered Rhode Island clam chowdah (yeah I am originally from Rhody). Like the clam cakes, it was light on the flavor of clam though loaded with potatoes which made my wife happy as a "clam".

Flo's is an iconic summer destination in Rhode Island. Located across from the Town Beach in Middletown, you get the benefit of the ocean breeze through the open windows of their ground floor dining room or second floor deck. There is a small dedicated parking lot behind the restaurant on Wave Avenue, but the spaces are not delineated and there are no marked handicap slots. You find a table in the dining area, put your order in at the outside counter, then pick it up at the inside counter. I ordered the clam strip roll platter with a canned soda. With the tax and a small tip, it came to $25. Since I use a cane, it would have been nice if someone helped me get my tray to my table, but I was left to struggle with it myself. The young staff was friendly, just not terribly aware. The portions were large and the clams had a nice, light crispy batter, although they were pretty greasy. I didn't eat the toasted hot dog bun they were served on. The coleslaw was a little peppery for my taste. And I don't care for battered fries, although these were okay with a good dousing of malt vinegar. I probably won't return.

Actually pretty great lunch option if you're visiting Newport. The actual town of Newport gets too packed during lunch hour and it an be impossible to find parking, so just drive over to Flo's. Portion sizes were big, the fish tasted fresh, great for families, quick service, and great combos. We ordered a mix of fish and chips, fish sandwiches, and shrimp and calamari to share. The cocktail sauce is also great for those of us who aren't the biggest fans of tartar sauce.

Sorry, but being a Rhode Islander and have lived in Newport for a very long time, I was disappointed in my recent visit . I have visited this establishment for quite a while but the last two or three years have changed. I usually wait till after the busy summer season to stop by and usually try a cup of the Rhode Island. Chowder and the fried clams. The chowder is okay but the fried clams were disappointing. Not crispy and quite chewy. There was also fried calamari mixed in and it was missing tartar sauce, I'm not sure if it's due to being late in the season but hoping they will improve in the coming year.

Flo's Clam Shack has been around for years. It's a funky place by 1st beach. They have a very large shark in the front yard and nautical/beach decor all around. The staff are great! I do go here a few times a year for the fried clams and maybe the fish sandwich. The stuffed quahog is not bad and is big . The lobster roll is ok. I am not sure what changed but it's not like I remember. I realize that it's just a clam shack but the food is just mediocre now.

Great views from top floor of restaurant. Order downstairs they give you a pager, when it goes off you take it downstairs to pick up your food. The Crabby Cake Sandwich was delightful and the fries and coleslaw that come with the combo were perfect. Friendly service and good food. Small parking lot out back. Nice variety of seafood items.

Take out window or you can sit down look at the menu and then order at the window. There is indoor and outdoor seating and a gravel parking lot and more public parking down the street. The world famous clam cakes were 96% bread, which I was under the assumption that there would be clam pieces inside. Really the clam pieces are tiny. The lobster roll was pretty decent but not the best in Newport by any means. You can get it with either mayo or you can get it with butter. I do not recommend getting the platter because you don't get a whole Lotta fries or coleslaw so it's not really worth it. The fried clams half plate is market price, but it is worth it because it's lightly fried and they fried the whole clams and they're pretty generous with portions.

Wow. Fried clams all the way!! I like clam strips and my husband likes whole belly clams! They are fried to a perfection. You order at a window then you get a pager, and a buzz when it's ready. Steaming hot n crunchy clams. Delish fries too! Didn't care for the Cole slaw, I like Mayo in mine!! Thx Flo's for surviving many storms and rebuilding, reopening each time!! A true New England experience.

A Newport area staple!! I had so many RI natives recommend this spot to us! Classic "seafood shack" side of the road New England joint! The fried clamcakes were my favorite - gotta dip them in the chowdah. Creamy all the way!! Their clam chowder was actually way better than I was expecting. Top 10 in New England for me for sure!! My husband loved the stuffed quahog (stuffie) and the bite I took was spicy and flavorful. Like a stuffed clam if you're never had this RI staple. The clam strips were good on the first couple bites but they were VERY greasy and the batter kept falling off. They only gave us 2 little half filled cups of tartar sauce and I am one that likes more with my clam strips - why they hogging the sauce?! Tartar sauce aside, it was a great lunch. True New England classic! Oh, and they're dog friendly outside which was a must for us!! There's picnic tables in the front and a rooftop upstairs.

Worth it more for the experience than the food--this is a unique, charming, ramshackle spot that has clearly been here for ages. Has a cool sidle up to the bar and place your order and wait until your name is called (ok, until your buzzer vibrates--guess we have to make some nods to modernity) This spot clearly specializes in fried seafood. My friends and I shared some clam cakes (tasty) and my girlfriend and I both got a crabby cake sandwich. I also got a "creamy" clam chowder that was thin and incredibly disappointing. My friend had a fried oyster sandwich that seemed to be a success. Overall the food was mostly fine, but a bit one note (deep fried!). If you are in the mood for a quick and somewhat reasonably priced fried seafood meal, in a place with some accumulated, historical "atmosphere." this could be your spot. But you could probably get a legit and better meal--seafood or otherwise--elsewhere in this fine town.

Open air , walk up Window, grabbed a table on the upper deck like they suggest before we ordered. Counter person and all staff were smiling and helpful ! Go for the clams , hence the name ! The lobster roll was not up to par with some other ones. But the fried whole bellies and strips were fantastic . The fish sandwich was fresh and delightful! Good stop , got there at 12:30 on a Friday and had no trouble finding a table or ordering !

I love fried clams and my husband found Flo's because we were on the hunt for fried clams while traveling in Newport. This is a very rustic little shack with both indoor and outdoor seating. Don't expect much as it's a no-frills place. The cutest thing about the shack is the bamboo walkway from the parking lot in back up to the building; It's pretty basic on the inside with too many tchotchkes all over the walls. We walked in and chose a table as they suggested we do first. There are menus at our table, but you place your order outside at a window. My husband placed our order at the window and received a pager to notify us when our order was ready. There is no table service at this restaurant. That may explain the sticky tables. The staff really needs to be aware of when people leave to come out and wipe down the tables. I wanted an iced tea, but the restaurant doesn't serve iced tea, I thought that was pretty weird because iced tea is a basic drink that restaurants have. My husband and I ordered a lobster roll and fried clams, which we shared. The lobster roll was overflowing with huge chunks of tender and sweet lobster. It came with a packet of mayonnaise so the lobster was not mixed with the mayo and celery. It also didn't come with the usual potato chips on the side. The fried clams, though, were the star of the show for me. Lightly breaded, these clams were served hot and crispy. I don't know how they did it, but the clams were just airy and light. They were the best fried clams I've ever had. Eating the clams brought me back to when my parents used to take us to Howard Johnson's for the fried clams. Of course, Flo's blows Howard Johnsons away, but the memory was sweet. They've been featured on Food Network TV, the Cooking Channel and the Travel Channel. The only reason why I'm giving this restaurant 4 stars is for the amazing fried clams. I should be taking away more than 1 star for the misses...sticky tables, lobster not already mixed with mayo and celery , and no iced tea. It's worth the stop at Flo's, though, just to eat those damn delicious clams.

Well, I was in Florida, and the Florida Flos was shut down so decided while I was visiting in RI to go visit Flo`s. The food was very subpar not from what I remember and what to expect from Flo`s. the grease was bad, and all my guest were thinking the same. It actually had a smell that we all could not describe. That night I got so sick and toss up all I ate; it wasn't pretty and some of my guest felt some same .. The grease Definity needed to be changed Come on Flo`s I know your better than that. I have been a customer for over 40 years Naples, Island Park and Middletown, please step it up,

My family and I ate here after a trip to the beach. Food was very warm and fresh, and hit the spot! The batter on the shrimp was quite lovely. Was done at a reasonable time and the service was friendly. I liked that there was an outdoor and indoor dining area. Sharks are one of my favorite animals so I was happy to see one outside the entrance!

I have no idea how this place got such a high rating. My mom, sister and I were in town and spotted this place. Looked very busy so we figured to give it a try. I heard people in line talking about the clam cakes so we ordered those, fried shrimp, and my sister ordered just a hot dog and fries. We were all disappointed. The staff seemed tired, and stressed from dealing with customers all day. Not friendly or customer service oriented. The clam cakes what they are supposedly known for were mostly all batter and very salty. Each of us only ate one. The shrimp was soggy, and un appetizing. My sister said the hot was below average. Def don't recommend this place. Not worth it to even try.

I knew the rating wasn't very good before coming here so I didn't have great expectations. The only reason we went here was because it was the closest walkable distance from the beach. The food is so overpriced and it wasn't very good. The lobster roll sounded great but it was very average. The lobster was fresh however soaked in just plain water and butter, there was no flavor really. I don't get why there is lettuce in there either. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The food was mid and overpriced. The service was slow too, we waited a very long time for our food. It was super busy and super packed so it will be hard to find an available table. However the woman at the bar actually caught my attention because she was super nice. She just radiates positive energy and she was so kind.

AMAZING fried seafood- tender, lightly coated, not salty, the sweetness of the seafood really shines through. Couple that with an ice cold Narragansett logger, and a nice view from the upper deck with the seabreeze coming in, it's perfect for a summer afternoon. Flo's has been here for a long time. They know what they're doing! One of the things I appreciate most about Flo's is that they keep the oil fresh so the seafood is light with slight crunch not saturated. Quite frankly it's perfect. Friendly staff working hard to ensure orders come out hot and fresh which keeps us loyally coming back. Great seafood menu options fiery stuffed QUAHOG'S, homemade chowder, Greek salads, a serious raw bar, fried seafood platters with scallops, clams, oysters, and shrimp. They also offer cheeseburgers, and hotdogs. And of course, beer! A minor frustration is the lack of parking. The restaurant has four or five parking spots in the rear of the building, but it's very tight so good luck because it's rarely an option.

If you are looking for some fresh seafood at affordable prices in Newport, this is a great spot to try! We came here because it was walking distance from our Airbnb for the weekend. It is right by a beach and is in such a cute location. They have indoor seating as well as a large patio. Their menu options are actually quite affordable and there are tons of different routes to take with ordering (platters, combos, a la carte, raw bar, etc). They also have some non-seafood items if you came here wanting something else. We got some pitchers of beer, they were only $17 for domestic beer. My husband wanted to try several different types of fried seafood, so he got the Flo's Fisherman Platter--it was MASSIVE! He could only eat about half of it and left with tons of leftovers. It came with fried clams, clam strips, calamari, shrimp, scallops, fish, clam cake, and even fries. I went with a cup of clam chowder and the small size of a la carte fried shrimp! I loved the clam chowder, it satisfied the craving for some authentic chowder. I was surprised at how much shrimp came in the small a la carte size, it was definitely enough for a full meal. My husband and I really liked our food for the taste, quality of the seafood, quantity, and pricing. We had some friends who got the lobster roll and they said it wasn't the best. The lobster roll is described as "on a toasted buttered roll with mayo on the side" which makes it sound like one of the hot buttered style rolls. People were surprised when it came out as a cold lobster roll instead and they said it only tasted okay. Despite that, everything else was good and I enjoyed our meal here out on the patio!

Parking was okay and somewhat difficult to locate where to enter the lot. Service was okay. Order at the counter, get a buzzer. No muss, no fuss. Food was delicious and I excitedly tucked into my first clear clam chowder and quahog (I want another!). Lots of fried food options, so not the healthiest, but that's not what you're there for, right? Attempting to sit outside as a single person was a bit of a challenge. Tables were occupied by groups, so I squeezed up to an outside bar type space, but felt packed tightly in.

Came here on a Sunday afternoon and the line was pretty long. You order, seat yourself and grab food when it's ready. Tried the raw seafood sampler, which had oysters, clams, lobster, shrimp, and crab legs. It was ok; expensive for what you get. Also got their infamous clam cakes, which was mostly flour and had very little clams in it. Clam chowder was less creamy than I expected but still good. Fried clams were delicious! Very nicely fried and big enough to be pretty meaty. Fries were nice and crispy and cole slaw was pretty good. Frozen lemonade was fine. This is a casual spot next to the beach with some good seafood options. Prices are a bit on the high end but expected based on the location. Service was relatively quick. I definitely recommend trying the fried clam platter but you could probably do without the rest.

Every time we go to Flo's we have a great experience! This time we decided to get the baked scrod with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and a salad. The scrod is cooked perfectly; it's flakey, buttery and goes great with the mashed potatoes. The potatoes were so flavorful and creamy. We also got a lobster bisque, which tasted great and had that nice chowder consistency. Part of me wishes they would add some pieces of lobster or clam to it so it wasn't just soup. We also got two frozen lemonades, since we were thirsty after a day on the beach. These were so yummy! My only gripe was that you get a pretty small glass and from what I gauge they were a little pricey. This place is self service, so you have to go to a counter and order your food. I find this to be quite easy and quick, but I understand it can be confusing for some since there is a raw bar upstairs and you can order certain things up there. There are lots of places to sit, some outside and some indoors. Overall it is a cozy place with great seafood and a nice view since it's right by the beach.

Fried clams were.. Let's just say, cardboard would have been better. We got stuffed, the stuffing was like paste, just gross. Clam cakes were tasteless and my fries were soft. Appears that this place is just for tourists as the food later made me sick and I threw up in the back parking lot. I really don't see how they can be this famous for food that makes you puke. I gave 2 stars because at least the soft drinks were cold, and it was really hot out side. Don't waste your money here.

They do have some great fried seafood here. Their whole belly clams are amazing and even the clam strips are sweet and tender. The fried fish is just as good. The other offerings such as chowder and clam cakes are pretty standard. But if you're in it for the clams and fish this is your joint!

Ok so first- background on myself. whole belly clams are my favorite thing. I go everywhere for them and am open to trying new places. I live in Connecticut and frequent a place on CT shoreline called Lenny & Joes Fishtale. (Westbrook) (This is my benchmark for comparison) Lenny and joe's is the BEST whole clams ive ever had. I just tried Flo's for first time yesterday (August 18, 2025) and i still can say now i have to run back to Lenny & Joe's to redeem myself, Let's start with the good about Flo's: Great environment. Beautiful place to go ; location, and the seating is lovely - the inside is amazing. Cool places to sit in woth shade and sun. some outdoor too. its beautiful. Best looking place to eat clams in for sure- As far as their whole clams..(their claim to fame) - i felt like i paid market pound/price for Clam STRIPS! the bellys were soooooo tiny. Their breading / recipe is like.. no lie- (taste just like KFC!) which is fine for (strips) but i had to peel that all off to taste the tiny belly. Also- please dont say to me: 'was just a bad catch' because i was at Lenny And joes in westbrook connecticut 2 days prior and i had some of their biggest, best, flavorful belllies ive had in my life. Lenny and joes never would have served up these tiny bellies that Flo did. Good luck to you Newport Rhode Islanders... if you want Real Clams and dont want to over pay for STRIPS- head on over to Lenny and Joe's Fishtale in Westbrook Connecticut. Itd be about an hour and a half west from Flo's. I dare you to. Happy clamming!

This is must when visiting Newport, RI. It apparently has been around forever and came highly recommended. The lobster roll was great and affordable! That is sometimes hard to find for the quality! We also ordered the seafood platter to get a taste of everything. It tasted very fresh! The ambience is fun! Very "on brand" decor for the town! There is indoor seating and outdoor seating. The service was quick and friendly. You order at the window or counter. You'll be given a buzzer and wait for your food. You seat yourself!

Awesome place. Park out back and walk down a bamboo covered boardwalk. Really cool. Place order outside and find a seat in one of two floors. Lots of memorabilia on walls and ceiling. Upstairs they have a bar and oyster bar with outdoor seating with awesome views of the beach. We had a beautiful day to sit out on 2 nd Fl deck that had a bamboo roof that gives shade. We had the cocktail shrimp as an app that was very good ...size and flavor with a nice cocktail sauce ...horseradish on top made for a perfect shrimp dip. We both had the clam plate with fries. Light battered and deep fried in clean oil. Everything was very good. Would def recommend. We ate during the week at lunchtime in June. I'm sure this place gets jammed in summer months !

My family came here after a long drive from Maine. I was disappointed the not all the seafood is in fact fresh, despite the signage. We went up stairs to eat, as we were told by our hotel the view was fantastic. Upon entering the top of the stairs, we headed to the "patio". The bartender (an older gentlemen) was yelling at me (unbeknownst to me at the time) to not close the door. Apparently when you close it you can't get out. He was yelling at me not to close the door. I wasn't paying attention because I certainly wasn't expecting to be yelled at by the bartender. Little did he know ow as he was talking about me and how dumb I was and that I couldn't hear him, my husband was standing waiting to order a drink (of which he did not as he certainly wasn't going to buy anything more from this establishment after he yelled at me). As I did close the door, I was locked in. I was saying through the glass I can't hear you, and he was yelling at me he couldn't hear me. My husband said if you can't hear her why do you think she can hear you??? Then we sat down to eat and left the door open as to not lock ourselves in and a patron got up and close the door, but not all the way, so it could still be open. And we're complaining that they were cold. When our food was ready, my children went downstairs to get the food and the patron asked them to please close the door as they were cold. The amount of issues and conversation about that door was really ridiculous. The lobster roll was pathetic and cost 3295. It came with fries and coleslaw but no drink. I commented if you're gonna pay $33 for a combo it should come with a drink as the much lesser expensive fish fries and coleslaw came with a drink??? 100% would not recommend eating here. It seems like a place for locals and is not welcome to tourist, which is funny because I think the tourist are the reason why many of these small towns stay alive. When we were leaving, there was a local elderly couple who apologize on the bartenders behalf that were sitting in front of the bar. I spent $77+ dollars for frozen fish, terrible lobster roll, and to be yelled at by the bartender and chastise by the locals for leaving the door open. No thanx

Not bad. I mean enjoyed the meal. Could be so much better with some tweeks and love. Cloe slaw should be cold, chilled not room temperature. Clams would be Xtra yummybif served hotter. Honestly while I'm piling on , the Barqs Root Beer maybe served with some ice. Little things to make Flo's the must go to return visit.

I didn't expect this place to be good based on its reviews, but it hit the spot. I got to taste a variety of fried seafood. My favorites were the scallops and clam cakes. The oysters were actually pretty good and fresh. My favorite was the crabcakes and the wasabi sauce on top was divine. The lobster roll and clam chowder was mid but everything else was tasty.

Used to be a good place for fresh cooked to order fried clams. Nice venue overlooking the ocean. No whole bellied clams on the menu. Clam strips were mostly fried breading.. Too much success and no real clams for fried clam lovers.

Seafood was fresh, but nothing really blew me away. We got the fried clams (whole clams that were perfectly cooked, but barely tasted the clams over the fried batter), clam fritters (tasted like fried bread with some bites that maybe resembled a seafood type of flavor...however, they left me yearning for a better donut), New England clam chowder (don't get it, VERY watery with little flavor and lots of potato), and their frozen hard lemonade blueberry drinks (don't get them either, not worth it in any respect). I appreciated the view and the low keys vibes I was wanting, but overall I was disappointed. I really wanted to like it, but here we are. I've been there, I've tried it, and I'm good for the rest of my life. No part of me wants to spend $80 again for 2 drinks, a plate of fried clams, 2 fritters, and a bowl of soup. WASN'T WORTH IT. A lot was left over and felt no desire to finish it for the calories. Go for a regular drink from the bar upstairs, sit, enjoy the view, and move on. Maybe ask someone next to you if you can have one of their fried clams so you can say you tried it.

I could use half portions with actual quality, I had to throw most fried oysters and fried clams in the garbage, the only edible things were the scallops, still not good. The food tasted like dirty oil and the seafood wasn't fresh. Please do better we need places like this in town.
