Yelp
TL; DR version: Interesting & healthy fare in a busy, trendy atmosphere. The combo works quite well for the working crowd in the Tysons Corner area.
Disclaimer: as is my wont when traveling, I'm shouting this place out off of a single visit. Your mileage may vary.
Quality: I chose the Forbidden Rice bowl because: a) I love the distinct flavor and texture of black pearl rice, & b) it's a pain to cook correctly at home. This place nails it, with a good blend of umami, sweet, and a tiny bit of spice (by my standard, anyway). The dish is definitely a modern spin on a typical rice bowl, but even the details are correct. Flavor, texture, presentation, and method all work very well together. Five stars.
Service: this is an updated, fast-casual approach to the high-volume lunch hour. You order at the counter, pay, and wait for your food. There's little to evaluate other than speed and efficiency, but both are done well. I was rather surprised how quickly my dish arrived after ordering. +1 for the table service to clean up after the meal. Four stars.
Cleanliness: My table was clean, the beverage area was clean, the dishes were clean, and the restroom was clean. There's nothing to complain about, even given heavy foot traffic. Note for those who care (I don't): restrooms are gender-neutral. Five stars.
Value: Any place that uses organic food with quality ingredients in an expensive area like Northern Virginia is unlikely to wow you with their low prices, and Flower Child is no different. I suspect that they're doing just fine, and I paid around $20 for my lunch and drank only water. That's just above the going rate. Three stars for being on average.
Ambience: There is a lot going on in here. The bathrooms are Victorian yard sale; the tables & seating are decidedly modern; and the walls are filled with the kind of positive vibe paintings and slogans that you'd expect. It's not obtrusive, though it is loud both visually and aurally. I found it a nice shot of energy with my lunch. Four stars.
Bottom line: if you're a fan of the Modern Market atmosphere & fare, you'll like this very much. Plenty of vegetarian/vegan options; plenty of quality proteins if you're an omnivore. A four-star average makes this a good choice in the busy Tysons area.
