Your Guide to Eating in South Sacramento | Eater SF

"Opened in 1985 by Mr. Flowers and passed on to the Henderson family in 1993, this old-school restaurant fries chicken and fish to order. The heaping two-way combo of fried whiting and fried chicken pieces with a side of soft, hand-cut fries always does the trick. Don’t miss out on the fresh out the oven sweet potato pies, if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one." - Illyanna Maisonet

The fried snapper at this restaurant is a must-try. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, it’s perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. The fried coating adds just the right amount of crunch, making each bite a delight. Paired with a tangy dipping sauce, it’s a satisfying dish that hits all the right notes. Highly recommended!

My wife and I arrived approximately 15 minutes before they were scheduled to close for the evening. There were two additional customers waiting to receive their orders. The owner was finishing up the customers orders but was willing to accept our order so close to closing. We informed her that we were attending a church conference nearby but had just been released for dinner break. We felt fortunate that we arrived in time due to being very hungry. We order a snapper meal and a chicken wing meal. Both we hot and delicious. Thank you for blessing us real good. When in the area go by it is really worth it.

I had been meaning to try this restaurant out for a while now and I should have come sooner. The food is amazing. I walked in and was greeted by the owner who is really nice and a gentleman behind the counter took my order and fried it right there who was also a pleasure to talk to. The portions are generous. The fish is well seasoned and perfectly fried. The french fries are potato cut fries with the skin on. They have quite the assortment of fish to choose from and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I also snagged up some hand pies and the apple pie is great. I'll definitely be coming here again.

Google
Friendly little hole in the wall. The first is excellent. I had the sole and another had the catfish, both really good.

Google
Swung by here while out working and I’m super happy that I did! The owner is the sweetest and no one can compare when it comes to fresh fried seafood in the Oak Park area! Had the Whiting w/ fresh cut fries and it was amazing. I usually have to wait til my FL trip every year to have whiting. Flaky, perfect crust, & the fries are as legit as they get. Oh, did I mention the tartar sauce? Made in house by Evette herself. Best tartar sauce I’ve ever had! This place is a MUST try if you haven’t already!

Google
I love how they ask you how you want your fish fried. The owner is a very nice person.

Google
Stopped in to get fish to-go as we were in the area. Many, many years since I've had the food from this little eatery. Very small parking lot and not in the best of neighborhoods but staff was friendly enough and the food was worth it. I had the catfish fillet dinner. Delicious. Cooked perfect as requested.

Google
Flowers has DEFINITELY went down hill .. use to be the best fish in Sacramento…. Now it’s probably the worst. Ordered fish yesterday and it was soooooo much fat on the catfish … and it was suppose to be catfish with bones … there was no bones at all … the fish was super greasy and the fries were limp and soggy. Wasted $15 … just horrible. Won’t be going there anymore. Yes I ate The food BUT … it was nasty 🤢

Yelp
WOW! Boy oh boy am I glad we stopped here!! I am a foodie and also a yelper, I reviewed this place and almost let the 3 stars deter me, thank goodness I didn't!!! I have learned, sometimes people will leave poor reviews to be hateful or because they are having a bad day and to judge myself. My Fiance and I ordered over the phone on a Thursday evening, we were told about pricing in advance so there weren't any surprises, the owner was polite and very kind. When picking up she was grateful for our business, asked us to give her feedback on her food and even threw in a large peach cobbler! I am a southern girl, sometimes it's hard to come by good southern food in Cali but this right here!? TOP notch! Cat fish was fried perfect, not too crispy with the perfect seasoning, the chicken had crispy skin but yet was nice and moist, easily coming off the bone; the Mac and cheese? MY MY MY, that Mac and cheese made me feel like I was back home. I wanted to call her up and say thank you Auntie!! Even the potato salad, sweet with a great ratio of ingredients. My Fiance ordered prawns and he was heaven. We gobbled this food right on up! We both were full with enough left for a little midnight snack. We will be back. The food is worth the price, do yourself a favor and grab a plate!

Yelp
Great food, whomever takes the orders over the phone was super helpful. I'd recommend the red snapper or catfish plate. Great portion sizes

Yelp
Food was actually really good service was OK. I think they was a little bit slow. Overall the ambience is not the best but the food overtakes the OK service and the bad ambience.

Suzette H.

Yelp
Yum-O! Snapper, fried medium and fries. Perfect seasonings. Fresh cut french fries were great. Delish!

Yelp
I was at this restaurant yesterday and followed the reviews. I don't see how anyone could say this fish is good. No season. Fish taste old. Chicken was over cooked with heat to high on chicken. Fries over cook.and burn. I wasted my $50. This lady does not know how to cook fish or chicken. I don't see how she is in business. I will never go again. I stick with other good restaurants. If I could give her a 0 I would. I can cook better than her.

Yelp
I'm from Indianapolis and Whitening fish was everywhere when I was kid. When I came to California, it was hard to find a fish spot like back home. While working in Oak Park, I came across this spot. I placed my order by phone and slipped in just before any lunch rush to grab my food. I didn't catch her name, so I am going to call her auntie. Auntie was packing up my order when I came in. We started talking like we knew each other. All of a sudden I was back in Indianapolis. That feeling of acceptance and familiarity was there at that counter. When I got back to my desk and seen the mound of fish in the package I was ready to dive in. First bite was all I needed to make me want to come back for more. If you craving some fish, don't hesitate to stop in and see Auntie.

Yelp

Yelp
Placed an order over the phone and waited in the car with my new baby until the estimated time. The guy somehow knew the order was for and brought it out to me! Just wow on the customer service! His words were " I know you have a baby and didn't want you to have to get out". I ordered a 1/2 pound red snapper and the fish was fried to perfection in fresh oil and was perfectly seasoned.

Yelp
Thank you Yelp for recognizing Flowers as a Black Owned business to support. We phoned in our order and the pleasant man was so communicative about our options. He wanted to make sure that it was cooked to our preference, such a genuine class act! After he confirmed the type of fish, he wanted to ensure they did our oysters to our liking. "Medium" was prepared the exact way we expected....not squishy and not over done. Loved the big oysters! In about ten minutes, we pulled up to the restaurant. Easy to find and convenient parking in front. Before we could even step out of the car, this lovely lil' Lady came to our window to greet us. Super sweet that she came out to us and knew our order. She said she'd be right out with our food. Even with the covid situation, you can tell they adjust and make things work to continue serving really delicious food. We enjoyed the perfectly cooked oysters; the generous portion of yummy catfish; the potato salad was on point; and the slices of bread..so soft and fresh! We are most certainly coming back. Gonna save space for dessert next time :)

Yelp
Wow ! Flowers , just NEVER disappoints us! The catfish and red snapper were flaky and fried tender and crispy around the edges. Hot sauce and tartar were BOMB! Macaroni and cheese and potato salad were both delicious and flavor packed ! Denzel , gave us great recommendations and we love this family owned business ! If your looking for a taste of home- this is IT! Stop by and don't be afraid to try something new

Yelp
Delicious found this gem when visiting the area. The staff was great and the fish was delicious. Snapper, catfish hit the spot. I didn't even have time to take a picture, the food disappeared.

Yelp
This Place is one of the best Places in town the way the Originality and Fish and Shrimp Fry is Great to say the least thats why I give it a 5 Star cause its the best Fish Fry around Thanks Champ's. I first came hear years ago and they are still here Awsom.

Yelp
Excellent Fish. Prepared excellent. Tried many places since moving here 5 months ago. This had been the next thus far. Lived here years ago loved it. Moved back still love it!

Yelp
They have Hugh portions, I love the fact that they ask how you like your fish cooked. Customer Service is A1

Yelp
When I tell you this hits the spot all the time!! Fish is bomb! Tarter sauce bomb!! These prawns are the best!! Fresh and flavorful. I love when Mrs. Yvette is there to hook it up for me! My only complaint is they close early so you better get your dinner early.

Yelp
I come here for my fish craving at least once a week. Best fried fish in town with a great mom and pop atmosphere

Yelp
This is my new favorite soul food spot. Family owned and operated since 1985. You can see the love in the photos on the walls, and taste it in the food. The folks are very nice and the food is really great. I had the red snapper dinner, and there was really so much food, I could barely finish it, but I couldn't compel myself to stop eating it until it was all gone! I had my order to go and the food travels well, it stays nice and crisp without getting soggy. I'll definitely be coming back! Orders are made pretty fast but if you're getting take-out, call in ahead of time just in case there's a line.

Kendra C.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the service is very friendly. It's a comfortable place to be. I love seeing the Book open for all to see-- no shame in lovin the lord! Success!!

Yelp
Good neighborhood fish market. It's been a long time since I've been here after moving out of the area. Good memories and good food.

Yelp
I love flowers fish. It is so delicious, nicely deep fried. Their sides are pretty good as well, the potato salad and collar greens is what I normally get. They have fried prawns, which are pretty good, they also sale oyster and fries. You can get fish sandwiches or the combos which comes with a choice of one, two or three sides. The prices are pretty steep. The staff's attitudes are terrible and if you call in an order to go, they will wait until you show up to get it before they will start it. The seating area is large, but it looks like its too much stuff. They have three or four pinball machines and a table with business cards and flyers of different events in the community.. They have flyers and posters on the walls, a few seems to be out dated. The restaurant has been here a long time, it is a "hole in the wall" type of place. The parking lot is small.. This is a black owned business. I think because the food is good, people deal with the attitudes of the staff. Don't get me wrong all the staff is not bad! They are located on Martin Luther King in Oak Park. I like flowers and I will continue coming here because I love the fish.

Baby B.

Yelp
Great childhood memories here. Flowers is in middle of O' Park sharing good old home southern style food. You enter this nostalgic place and get a quick taste of the 70's and down south... service quick and a quick bite of hood love that will gather you up, and feed you!!! Eey, baaaby..

Yelp
Been to this family owned business twice and I love the warmness of the staff. We ordered snapper and cat fish filet dinners fried medium and they were friend to absolute perfection. Not greasy, overly salty, throw away pieces of fish. I needed to request modifications to my dinner and Tim explained what my options were and made recommendations. Half way through the dinners my husband and I had to tap out! Later we tried the peach cobbler which was good, but too cinnamon heavy and lacked adequate crust. There was a sort of soft, granola looking crumble inside (was not granola but for lack of better attempt to describe), whereas I would have appreciated more crust. Good flavor but the "crumble" was off putting, as I'd never seen anything like that in a (traditional) cobbler. I've had their sweet potato pie which is amazing. Our favorite fried fish (good prawns too!), we will certainly be back again and again

Bella D.

Yelp
Delicious food, owner is fantastic too! We got a meal with red snapper, shrimp, coleslaw and mac salad. All were very good.

Yelp
First off I just want to mention that this place has been open for many generations of local oak park community and family. I have been coming here since my high school days back in 2004. The place is a hole in the wall that may be out dated and not up to some people's taste but looks of a building never determined the taste of food accurately in my experiences. Mrs. Yvette is the wonderful woman who makes it feel like home. She always greets me with a smile, always giving out a hug if you need one. If I've ever had a misunderstanding with my order or had a need she is always willing to take care of it right then and there. It's important to take these tips from me to better understand how personable these people are. First off I always look over the entire menu just to make sure. I check to see what deserts are available. Then when I'm ready to order I usually get the 3 way with Medium fried oysters, prawns and cat fish. Comes with some bread and hot sauce. I get my fries a little crispier than usually served. I make sure I let whoever is taking my order exactly how I like my food and my plate. I always CHECK my food before I leave. Coming here over the years, I've had my order taken by Denzel since he was a kid. Sure he has made mistakes, maybe was in a bad mood some days or distracted. There has never been a time where it wasn't made right by him or whoever was making the food. The staple is that this is a family owned business long standing in the oak park community. There is no table service or 5 star rating service. The price and taste is worth the visit I'll put it that way. Denzel has definitely improved his customer service skills since the last time I've been here. He took my order today with no issues and made sure to ask how I liked my hot link made. My order was hot fresh and correct. The fish I ate did not taste old nor did I have any issues after I ate the food. Always give this place a chance despite what you hear because this place is more than what meets the eye. Make sure if you call in you're order ask for it to be repeated back to you over the phone sometimes it's pretty busy inside and can get a little loud.

Yelp
Man the fried fish was delish. Crispy just right. I didn't like the tarter was too egg-y for my liking. The bread the serve isn't all so great but the fries are good if you eat then right away. The dude at the counter was sweet and I enjoyed the lady that cooked my food. She had good energy. I will definitely support again. Take my money y'all

Yelp
So because of the bad reviews here on Yelp I almost did not go to Flowers. But I'm so glad that I did. I pulled into the restaurant at about 6:30 and it was closed. However, a lady in a nearby car rolled her window down and asked me if I wanted to place an order. I told her yes. She got out of her car re-opened the restaurant just for me and fried me up some delicious fish! I kid you not I felt like royalty. Best restaurant experience ever! We talked as my food was being prepared and I pointed out the negative reviews here on Yelp. The lady, who happened to be the owner, Yvette said that she was aware of the concerns and was working on getting an updated menu. I offered to help her. That's how we do it where I'm from (representing Oak-town)! I've updated the hours here on Yelp and created a new menu for Flowers. People let's not be quick to pass judgment on our black owned businesses because you think they are "too blackish" for your taste. As a matter of fact let's not be quick to pass judgment period. If being real, treating customers like family and running YOUR business like you're cooking from your home kitchen is something you feel equates to being "Ghetto-ish"...stay away. However, if you understand that when you OWN a business that happens to be in an African American community and you are keeping our youth off the streets by employing them, even though they might say "we bout to" instead of "we are about to" you're making a difference in that community then support Flowers. Go there and expect to be treated like family. Expect to have delicious seafood prepared for you. While you're waiting check out the memorabilia on the various walls. The tribute to the President Obama and his family filled me with pride; yes it happened within our lifetime. The friends and family collage has adorable babies on it. Grab a flyer off the table that supports other business and tells of upcoming events. Read the Midtown Monthly's review of Flowers, it's amazing. Lastly, take a moment to appreciate that Flowers Seafood Restaurant has been feeding souls for 30 years. I think that's pretty fantastic and speaks volumes.

Lorna L.

Yelp
Went to Flowers for the first time today and was very disappointed; I really try to support my folks but it is hard at times They were not wearing gloves; the shrimp were not clean/deveined. The prices on the website are not the same as in the restaurant, which is false advertisement; when asked why was there such a vast difference, the answer was that the menu on the website was VERY old and they haven't gotten around to updating it. the one thing I can say about the young man serving me "he was polite" but still needs to wear gloves at all times when handling food; COVID or NO!!!!!! If you visit Flowers make sure to double check the prices when ordering off the website menu
google avatar

Terra R.

Yelp
I had a taste for fried fish and was recommended by a close friend of this place. I ordered the 5 piece whiting lunch special with fries. I am truly disappointed as my fish tasted old and was fried extremely to hard. As a cook and foodie...I know when I am being served something not up to par. Out of 5 pieces of fish I picked at I probably had one whole piece. Between the bones and the fried hard behind recognition...My fries were good though. I am truly disappointed!!!
google avatar

Jeffery T.

Yelp
As long as the lady(don't know her name) is cooking all is good. The others are all out back smoking weed & god knows what else Over all review is that the food is good & I will go there instead of J.J's!!
google avatar

Ira L.

Yelp
I go this place if you want good fried fish. Tonight I had southern fried catfish fillets with macaroni salad .They have a few different options in desserts which are homemade. They have sweet potato pie and bean pie.
google avatar

Kristin G.

Yelp
Killer deep fried prawns and oysters, the best coleslaw I've ever tasted. Took home an order of red beans and rice with cornbread muffin ... great stuff. So, so happy to find this place and go back the next time we are in Sacramento.

Martha M.

Yelp
Food was cold and the chicken tasted like it was cooked in fish grease I ordered the two-way red snapper and chicken wings with fries. I should have kept my money because it was all bad!
google avatar

Yelp
This used to be a good hole in the wall spot... Now it's just a hole in tje wall... No disrespect intended. Gotta give it some stars for the longevity in the hood. It used to be all good. The food just isn't the same... They are not consistent with business hours either.
google avatar

Brandon E.

Yelp
The fish or chicken had no seasoning they forgot to give me all my sides .. but they got potential tho they just need to season that meat
google avatar

Dee De B.

Yelp
Called Flowers fish market told my Coworkers that there FISH IS OFF THE HOOK....but we called to do a phone order the man that answered first was rude, when we asked him about the price he said $21 FOR A 3 AND 4 WAY. BUT THE MENU SAID $15 dollars. When we decided we didn't want to go forward to order he said "y'all wasted my damn time"...
google avatar

Carol P.

Yelp
We used to get our fried fish fix from JJ's on Fruitridge before a kitchen fire sadly put them out of business. They did catfish right. Seasoned cornmeal and perfectly fried. I know Flowers was also a staple in Oak Park for fish, but over the years, I've only tried them a couple times. Well, on a recent "Fish Friday" I called in an order to pick-up after work. Going off an old menu posted on Yelp, I ordered a catfish filet dinner and a prawns & oysters dinner. Each dinner comes with a gang of fries and a slice of bread. Total was $32, maybe a bit pricey, but it really is a lot of food. My favorite was the shrimp. I'm sure it was all the same seasoned cornmeal they used to coat everything, but it seemed that it really just brought out the natural ocean flavor of the shrimp. The catfish and oysters were also tasty and fried to a perfect crispness, while staying moist and tender inside. By the time I got the food home (about 20 minutes later), the fries were limp and soggy. That was the only negative. Service was fast and friendly when I walked in. All the staff were smiling and laughing and having a good time jamming to old skool music, while still taking care of business. I felt very comfortable and welcomed. My food was already waiting for me when I got there (15 minutes after I called it in), even though the girl who took my order didn't give me an estimated time to pick up. One side of the small restaurant is a dining area, and I actually wouldn't mind eating there (during the day, of course) to enjoy my food directly from fryer to plate. So whether you dine-in or get it to go, just know that you'll be getting some deliciously fried food, prepared with pride and joy!
google avatar

Yolanda R.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. Who tells the Customer that they wasted there time? That attitude is the reason the order was cancelled along with the fact that the online menu prices are different than what was estimated. Didn't even deserve the one star.
google avatar

Ros M.

Yelp
The premises are filthy. Dirt in the corners. The floor is dirty. They furniture is old. The staff is rude. The son of the owner is arrogant and rude. He tried to over charge me. Then tried to tell me I ordered things I didn't order. And even though I I tried to just say ok we obviously misunderstood each other. But he just wouldn't let it go. And then when he rung it correctly it snidely said oh it's only a ten dollar difference. But it's my ten dollars. He got really mad and told me to get his restaurant. Which I happily did.
google avatar

Renee F.

Yelp
I called in my order and they answered pretty quick, had my food ready in about 10 min. I was randomly craving some sole and didn't really know where to go since I haven't lived in Sacramento long so I got on Yelp. I saw a few options but they all had mixed reviews so I was skeptical but I also knew that I wasn't in the mood to cook. I didn't come in expecting the best fish I've ever had I just wanted it to be good and it was. My 1/2 lbs order of sole was a huge portion for me and I feel like I got my money's worth. I can do without the fries but the fries aren't important to me. I didn't have any customer service issues, they were nice to me when I came in and I will be back. This was my first time here so I'll have to update the review after a few more times.
google avatar

Brandi J.

Yelp
This place was terrible I usually wait a day before putting up my review but I had to now. I'm from Louisiana an u can tell the red beans were boxed or bagged not fresh at all. The corn bread muffin was microwaved u could smell it soon as she set it down an the top was hard! The fish was fried so hard there was no fish in it no more. And the fries were worse it was no point in complaining I just won't ever be back here again. If y'all want someone to come in an show u how to cook hire this girl. I'm from Louisiana haven't been here long an we know how to fry seafood an certainly Kno how to make homemade red beans. Y'all need to do better this place is awful!
google avatar

Katrina A.

Yelp
Diamond in the rough! I love southern style seafood and I'm usually disappointed but this place definitely delivers. We had the fried catfish, which came with potato salad, and an order of mac and cheese. I'll be coming back for sure, next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
Really good shrimp and chicken. It came with a good amount of food. I wasn't a fan of the macaroni and cheese. It tasted like it had amaerican or velvets cheese in it. Not that it was altogether gross, it's just not how I like my Mac. This was a Togo order and the lady that helped me was very sweet!
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
I came to flowers with my girl and this lovely lady greeted me when I came in reminded me of my grand mother ! Instantly felt welcomed ... they had wonderful pictures all over the wall you could just feel the history within the business ! We ordered the pound plate of catfish And fries !
