Yelp
We used to get our fried fish fix from JJ's on Fruitridge before a kitchen fire sadly put them out of business. They did catfish right. Seasoned cornmeal and perfectly fried. I know Flowers was also a staple in Oak Park for fish, but over the years, I've only tried them a couple times. Well, on a recent "Fish Friday" I called in an order to pick-up after work. Going off an old menu posted on Yelp, I ordered a catfish filet dinner and a prawns & oysters dinner. Each dinner comes with a gang of fries and a slice of bread. Total was $32, maybe a bit pricey, but it really is a lot of food. My favorite was the shrimp. I'm sure it was all the same seasoned cornmeal they used to coat everything, but it seemed that it really just brought out the natural ocean flavor of the shrimp. The catfish and oysters were also tasty and fried to a perfect crispness, while staying moist and tender inside. By the time I got the food home (about 20 minutes later), the fries were limp and soggy. That was the only negative.
Service was fast and friendly when I walked in. All the staff were smiling and laughing and having a good time jamming to old skool music, while still taking care of business. I felt very comfortable and welcomed. My food was already waiting for me when I got there (15 minutes after I called it in), even though the girl who took my order didn't give me an estimated time to pick up. One side of the small restaurant is a dining area, and I actually wouldn't mind eating there (during the day, of course) to enjoy my food directly from fryer to plate.
So whether you dine-in or get it to go, just know that you'll be getting some deliciously fried food, prepared with pride and joy!
