Fly Awake Tea House

I’ve been to this place a couple years ago and was delighted to go back and bring another friend. I’ll be back again! It’s a lovely spot great folks and a fantastic experience. Great card readings as well.

In this city, brimming with concrete, electricity and microcosmic experiences, its denizens are desperate for connection and spirituality. This Tea House will sell you a dream. If but for a moment in time and space.

Originally I was looking for a tea house where I could order a nice drink to-go while running some errands on a someday, but I ended up here and the place was so nice that I ended up staying for over an hour, procrastinating my chores. But I have no regrets about it, sitting alone at Fly Awake Tea House with a calming cup of chocolatey tea and some samosas was a great way to start my day and slow down, which is something a lot of us forget to do. The atmosphere of this place is absolutely lovely and inclusive, and the employees here seem to know a lot about the menu while providing great service. It's somewhere I'd love to stop by again due to having such a nice experience. I would definitely recommend this place.

Seriously one of the coolest businesses in Portland, and it is what makes this city so unique! The tea is excellent and fresh - served gonfu style. The staff is friendly, and the vibe is immaculate. A great place to visit by yourself or with friends!

A truly beautiful space! The tea menu is expansive and wonderfully described. Diana was very accommodating and knowledgeable. Highly recommended, especially if you can take time to enjoy the beautiful setting!

I miss this when it was a garden, it was so much more welcoming. A couple times I have been at the new location and I overheard some sexist conversations that the owner was actively participating in. Gross.

Whenever I seek the company of reverent, warm, and kindred tea folk, I know where to go. Fly Awake is my go-to cozy tea nook in town where I trust I can carry my wary or light heart in and be met with *just* the perfect tea suggestion from someone I can feel cares for the ritual and steep as much as I do. I cherish getting to introduce tea lovers who have not yet found this tea-easy sorta place and witness as they marvel at the space and menu and then receive care one lovely steep after another. I've taken a few of the sweet dream in watercolor classes offered in the space as well and adore the community support and collaboration that allows such a perfect practice overlap. Grateful to the entire Fly Awake team for years of beautiful tea experiences, with hopes of many more to come!

Super cozy and cool spot for tea lovers! Tea flight is a good option for your first time here. I didn't care much for the snacks, mostly too salty for my taste. This is such a special establishment and space! Fly Awake is an experience and a joy to share in every time I go. Beautiful tea list, attentive staff and delicious little treats! Tons of books, oracle decks and curiosities to dig through. Upstairs and downstairs intimate setting. There is a ton of intention and thoughtfulness put into Fly Awake, i love it and I feel it! I was in the area running some errands and had some extra time to visit Fly Awake. While the aesthetics seem to aim for a hippie-chic vibe, I found the layout to be quite sterile and impersonal. It gave me the impression of walking into a Starbucks. As an enthusiast of gong fu cha, I have been practicing pouring tea since the pandemic began and love to geek out about tea. I was looking for specific items and asked for assistance. Instead of addressing my questions, the staff member proceeded to explain my hobby in a way that felt condescending, offering unsolicited suggestions without asking any clarifying questions. To make matters worse, when I inquired about sourcing, he simply stated they did not have any information without follow-up or curiosity. This experience, coupled with the marketing language on the website, left me feeling disappointed, as I was hoping to find elements of tea culture that I've appreciated in over nearly a decade in various settings. It raises the question of whether this place lacks authenticity or if its focus is simply to provide a stylish environment for remote work rather than fostering genuine engagement with tea culture. This experience would not have been so bad if the server admitted to being out of their depths. There not being any sourcing information besides region is wholly inappropriate for these luxury goods.

Great little place in the Mississippi neighborhood. It seems like a well-kept secret as the teahouse is tucked away in an alley. The staff is very nice, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about tea. I was not sure what to get, so I told the teamaker the flavors I did not like and ordered a dealer's choice. He gave me a cup of something called princess with a dagger. Very tasty. I would have stayed longer but needed some wi-fi to do some job hunting. The tea is free-flowing, so do come here with a friend to have wonderful tea and conversation!

LOVE THIS TEA SHOP!!! This hidden gem in Portland is a unique place to enjoy bottomless cups of tea and conversation. While I don't have photos in the tea shop, I have their snow chrysanthemum tea because I fell in love. This tea is high quality and I love that they feature teas that are hard to find. A great to go recommendation: Get. The. Chai.

Very cozy tea shop. It was a packed day when we tried the tea house for a meeting. Though it was packed we felt attended to and the tea refills were always right on time. The menu was so interesting with a little story like description of the teas available. Quirky, quaint and small but with a try if you are a tea connoisseur.

This is probably one of THE BEST places to go to in Portland if you like tea. It's a small and cozy blink-and-miss place but trust Google maps. The decor is very creative and artistic but also calming in a sense. The tea selection is amazing. I would recommend the flight because you can try different teas and the service is unlimited so you can drink as much as you want. The owner of the place personally served us and helped us pick our teas and everything he said was spot-on. The teas are all different and some of them, I've not even heard of before. Kudos to their creativity. The food is limited but everything I tried was absolutely great. It's all made fresh and full of flavor. They make better samosas than most Indian places. I would have loved to see more food choices, some more small bites because I think they can really do a great job with whatever they choose to have on their menu. I will definitely be going back to try more of their teas and experience the place to its fullest.

Fly Awake is a quiet, calm, tea shop with great snacky food. I love their decaf chai tea! The employee who helped me was friendly and efficient. I've been to Fly Awake. Several times, each time being a positive experience.

Highly recommended to my friend and I by the local host we were staying with. Tucked in an alleyway, this is the type of place where you can ask for suggestions around any problem you are facing and they will suggest a tea to help. I told the owner that I wanted a tea that would give me more focused energy and he suggested "Princess with Dagger" a chocolate, sweet potato, hearty rooibos within seconds. He originally suggested Wizard's Eyebrow but that was a little too focused. I also want to try the snow chrysanthemums. Wish I lived closer to try more teas!!

Chill and inviting for us tea - newbies! They were super welcoming and took great care and time in explaining things. We will be back!

This place is really hard to find. Walk around the corner from Ruby Jewel's, past She Bop, and into the alley. It is worth finding, perhaps after you've shopped for that special someone next door... I thought at first that this place was too expensive. But I also didn't realize they weren't simply going to pour hot water into a pot with 4 tea bags and call it good. Each cup we had in our 'service' was individually prepared by hand from a variety of very interesting teas, such as Wizard's Eyebrow, Snow Falls on Monkey, etc. Hands down, this is the best tea I have experienced. No bitterness (from tea or staff!), great flavors and scents, great experience. Stick all that in a chill place with tarot cards and friendly people, you have a place that you want to hang out in for hours, if not days!! So if you are a bit nervous about bringing home that new toy from She Bop, and need to chill for a bit while you think of an answer to the question of "You're putting what, where?"? This place is perfect. Tip 1: We'll definitely be back, our only regret was that we only had about 20 minutes, and that just doesn't do the experience justice. Plan for at least 30 minutes. Tip 2: They host a lot of events that seem interesting, so check that out as well!

I visited Fly Awake PDX for the first time today and it was an great experience! The choice of teas is amazing. I had the chai and was very pleased. We had a few Indian food items, all were very good! The atmosphere is just incredible! It's a great cozy spot to visit and has a fantastic vibe. Our server was very friendly and helpful in making our decisions. Definitely will be back!

I discovered the art of tea here! This is the place to ponder and grow tea appreciation. I'm journaling now and plan to be back to journal more...or share this conversation catalyst with another pensive soul. T

Cute little tea shop hidden in an ally behind other shops??!!! Absolutely! There was no way of knowing what I'd find when I walked through the nondescript door. But dude, I'm so glad I did. Take my advice, and go! I had the Guru chai; it was spice as advertised. And there are so many other lovely choices.

This place is truly a hidden treasure. Just happened to stumble upon this place, walked in and got the best tarot reading of my life and for only 20$. I will be coming back again!

This is an incredible and unique place. With a group of four other girls during my bachelorette weekend, we came here extremely hungover and struggling and Kevin welcomed us with open arms. He recommended me a tea to help me with my physical state, and it worked. Maybe it was the placebo effect, but even so I would come here anytime if it made me feel that much better. We loved the first tea so much that we stayed for another. This time, Kevin recommended a tea for abundance in my upcoming marriage and told us the beautiful story underlying the tea. I ended up buying some of this tea to bring home. This tea shop makes me wish I lived in Portland! I now have a tea subscription and have enjoyed all of the teas they have shipped. Come here for a magical tea therapy experience.

Best tea. Authentic vibe. This is my go to tea shop. Kevin is a tea wizard ! Check out some of the events they host in the space. If you like high energy tea ask for fire ants or 8100.

I haven't had the pleasure of going here in person so I'll update this review someday, but my experience is online. Their online shop selection is tiny! Which is ok because I guess calling is good... but they never seem to answer the phone. So I message them on Instagram and they said I could buy the tea I was looking for that way, so I gave them my shipping address and asked the best way to pay them. I guess something about that was uncool or something because they ghosted me after that. Would "see" all my messages and refuse to respond. Not only bad service but just unkind to a fellow human being to just not respond.

Cool spot, found it by happen stance while wandering down Mississippi. Showed up to find out that there isn't a tarot reader on Mondays, but there are cards to use if you like. Ended up trading spreads with another patron. Super cool place for a out of stater, like myself to find like minds. Ordered the dirty chai which was really good for a vegan option. Will definitely return next time I'm in Portland.

We came in on Christmas Eve after shopping and eating on Mississippi Ave for a nice tea before home. Server was rude, no greeting. The first thing he asked was if we wanted our tea to go. It was so uncomfortable, I actually checked the time to make sure we didn't just come in as they were closing. The tea was expensive and served scalding hot. He immediately walked back upstairs to continue his conversation without so much as a thank you. We were so uncomfortable, we left immediately. After 20 minutes, the tea was still scalding so we took the tops off and one accidentally spilled. It was still so hot it burned my leg. We won't be returning and we are posting this review so no one else will either. With so many wonderful choices in Portland, don't waste time here.

An enormous tea menu to choose from in a cozy and comfortable space. The person who helped us make our selection was very kind and extremely knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the tea that we shared and the service was incredible. The person who helped us joked that they would "keep pouring tea for us forever". We stayed for about 90 minutes. I must have drank more tea than I ever have in one sitting in my life. Although we chose to sit in the loft space, like magic, my cup was always replenished nearly as soon as I set it down empty on the table. That was impressive! I look forward to coming back to try other teas.

I love this off the beaten "alley" tea spot. A great variety of teas to choose from, and the man who was working each time I went in was friendly and informative. Limited seating, but great for a mellow conversation/hang out (which I personally prefer over more crowded, loud spaces)

Fly Awake is not just a Portland gem, but a gem of West Coast tea culture. Kevin and the crew are super knowledgeable about the array of Chinese teas they have, and more importantly are very intuitive about which tea would be right for you, given your taste and where you are at emotionally or energetically in the moment. It's more a salon than a coffee-shop, meaning that you will be welcome to join the conversation, like you are at the Cheers of tea. Soon, everyone will know your name. As we liked to say, it's where "introverts come to extrovert," though you can still also comfortably curl up around your warm teacup and keep silent. Even though I moved to the Bay Area, I can't find any place down here which even approaches Fly Awake's quality and community. So, I still order my tea from Fly Awake.

I love this little hidden gem. The owner was so friendly and helpful and the menu of teas along with the continual pouring was such a wonderful experience. The samosas were great as well. I'm so grateful this tea house exists. If you're looking for a mindful, true tea ceremonial type space this is your spot. If you're looking for a Starbucks type spot for a quick mindless tea, you've come to the wrong place - but I still suggest you try Fly Awake because it may just alter your awareness of what a tea experience should be. Amazing experience. Not overpriced. Great place to chill, take your time drinking tea, check out fun tarot cards and other style reading cards. Quality tea and super friendly staff. Very clean place as well! Front door is Located in a back alley, love the vibes! Super earthy.

On the up side, they have a big selection of interesting tea and a pretty nice environment. It is not the same place as the earlier reviews mention, there is no tea garden etc. They sold that (really lovely) house and moved into a garage on a back alley off Mississippi. It's still cute but has nowhere near the charm of the tea garden mentioned in earlier reviews.

I just went here for the first time with my friend Rick. This was Rick's idea. I had never heard of the place before. But I figured it was worth a shot. We walked down a cute driveway to this small structure at the back of a house and a garden. When we came in the proprietor was giving a tarot reading to someone. On the counter where we ordered tea, they had a little bowl of merit badges, where you could pick a badge, tell them why you merited it, and then get the badge! They also had little zines about how to achieve your dreams. It was then that I knew I was going to love this place. But how is the tea? I hear you asking. In a word, phenomenal. Indian chai straight from Indian Chaiwalla carts that the owners lived near in India. It comes unsweetened, and you have a choice of different sweetners there. I also tried Chinese Red Robe Wu Yi Oolong, which we got for free, from the proprietor of the shop! He was also kind enough to share the history of this tea. We spent a happy hour reading poetry, laughing and drinking tea. My friend also got a samosa that he really liked too. When we asked the proprietor what his reasoning was behind this teashop, he said, "I come from Iowa, where people are neighborly. That means we want to create gathering places for our friends to come together and help each other achieve our dreams." He continued, "We are in Portland now, where people are very friendly, but they are not necessarily neighborly. They will be kind and polite to you, but you won't necessarily get invited to their houses." So I said, "Wow, you've created a place to help people achieve their dreams" and he said, "Yes. Also a place for me to tell stories! We've only been going since May but it's come along very well. We've had some good musical acts here as well as connections with people who lived next door to each other for 30 years and never knew they had similar hobbies!" I love his vision for this teashop, and I love the tea, and I love the positive vibes of the place. Do you think you'd like some excellent tea and more friends in your life? Then you need to run to Fly Awake. I know I'll be back. Maybe I'll see you there.

The guru chai is great as is, no sweetener needed. The guy behind the counter offered great conversation and a great cuppa tea! Will be back

No words can describe the varied and amazing experience that is Fly Awake. Don't go with expectations or preconceptions about tea or what a tea bar should be and you will discover the possibilities.

You know how when something is so wonderful that you think, I have to Yelp about this place...?! We were invited to Fly Awake to meet with friends to discuss wedding ceremony plans. We sat outside under the shelter of a beautiful sprawling tree in the garden and were served delicious hot cup after cup of tea chosen by the proprietor. (You can always choose your own but he says it is nice to share a specific tea if it is group gathering so everyone benefits from the same medicine from the tea.) His choice was amazing, as was the chocolate morsel he served with the tea. A perfect late afternoon. I'll be back!

If you're looking for comfort, sip an authentic Indian street chai and absorb the beauty of this healing garden. If you're looking for adventure, taste some tea! The terrior can easily transport you halfway up Mt. Yunnan in the springtime . . .

Oh wow, this is a great place to relax outdoors. This quiet and peaceful spot is just a few blocks from Whole Foods on Fremont. I came for chai but stayed to unwind and try some samples that Kevin (one of the owners) gave me. I really enjoyed the uniqueness and quality of the tea selections. There were some very rare treats that Kevin was happy to discuss. I highly recommend the lime iced tea. Bring a book!

A friend introduced me to this gem yesterday. A place you can go and instantly feel at like you've been going there for years. What a loving group of humans. Those who work there and those that go there. Went on my first tea journey. Just a magical place. I will definitely be going back regularly.

Absolutely delightful! One of Portland's little secrets. Staff are extremely knowledgable and friendly. I got the house chai and my partner got the hazelnut chai, both delicious!

This place is so cute. A great option for a getaway when you just need to decompress. There is no wifi, no lines, no loud thumping bass. The tea experience is ideal and they have tons of goodies for sale like herbal chocolates! Highly recommend, if you're a tea person.

Fantastic service, holy heck. And the two most important things are here: great tea and approachability. The seating is outdoors in the summer which is so lovely under that giant Japanese maple. Drinking tea served perfectly in a new-american-post-chinese style; from the right brewing vessels in the right drinking vessels. If you want healthful and happy tea, go here. Whats more, if you don't know what to have, let Kevin curate the sitting for you. Trust him. He knows good tea the way so few folks do.

This place is amazing! The environment is magical. The owners are awesome and both super knowledgeable and willing to share about about teas and herbs they serve. The food and truffles are great, and the tea is absolutely top notch. Definitely worth many, many visits.

Fly Awake serves the best chai I've tasted in Portland -- plus a fierce array of teas, homemade herb-infused chocolates, and artisanal snacks. It's feels less like a business and more like a home that's been happily opened to a tea-drinking, garden-wandering public. A total gem!

On a warm day, the green tea at tip of the cold tea menu was excellent. The savory samosa was excellent - great flavor. Cool interior design. Friendly owner who was happy to share interesting info about our tea.

I really love to sit and drink tea in the beauty of a backyard garden. It is very relaxing and has areas of sun and shade. The people are friendly and it is a neighborhood kind of place where you can take friends, meet friends, or just have time by yourself. A wide selection of teas - my personal favorites are the oolongs and their fresh made Dirty Chai (made with soy milk). Both the traditional and the dirty chai are great and not oversweetened. I also usually have a chocolate lavender truffle and one or two samosas with fresh mint chutney. They have free WiFi and now in the winter, an indoor space.

It is rare to visit a business and feel that your worth is defined by something other than your wallet. Fly Awake understands this, it has soul (today, I had the thought that spending time there is like spending time in someone's soul). Apart from their refreshing tea blends, amazing weekend food menu, and unparalleled service (these other reviews are right, these people know their stuff and genuinely care) there is a certain aura to this place that draws me back. A regenerative oasis. A reciprocal love.
