Best Holiday Desserts in Philly | Eater Philly

"From October to January, Reading Terminal’s Flying Monkey Bakery brings back one of its most iconic offerings: the pumpple cake. This unique dessert features a pie baked inside a cake and is made in two variations: a chocolate cake with pumpkin pie baked inside, and a vanilla cake with apple pie baked inside. Stop by to grab a few slices, or place an order on its website (just be sure to give at least 72 hours’ notice)." - George Banks-Weston

Inside the Magical Early Morning Hours at Reading Terminal Market | Eater Philly

"I experience the "magic hours" at Flying Monkey Bakery with owner Elizabeth Halen, who starts baking and prepping—everything from cookies to bars—bringing wet and dry ingredients to room temperature, and even sometimes brewing coffee before the lights turn on because getting the coffee ready is number one; she says the market remains serene and easy to shop for locals even after it opens at 8 a.m." - Dayna Evans

Flying monkey was decent. We tried the classic and red velvet whoopie. It was fun to try something new but it’s not something I would need to try again. They were a little dry in parts with not enough filling on the edges. Just wasn’t blown away by any means. The guy working the counter was friendly and had $2 waters which was cheaper than most other places I saw. Not something that I’m dying to get back to but would eat one if it showed up in front of me.

Don’t waste your time. I’ve bought cupcakes from this place in the past - they were dry. Today, my family and I were visiting and I saw no line at this counter and ordered my kids some lemonade - it is so bitterly tart. As if they threw lemons with the rind on in the blender. - I did tell the flying monkey staff that the lemonade was awful. That my kids refused to drink it - it’s that bad. The lady at the counter asked rudely if I tried it. I told them yes and I’d agree, it’s gross - they did not care, did not offer to refund my money. Stating they use real lemons. And also said that I could add simple syrup to it. - Like what?? If you know your product needs a little extra something then why don’t YOU fix it? I wasted $12. Go to the pretzel booth next to this one and get a much better tasting lemonade with friendlier staff to serve you. This place is not worth your money.

You HAVE to stop here to try the classic whoopie at its absolute finest! The intense chocolatey goodness of the cake is perfectly balanced with the sweet cream filling. Wish I could have waited for it to get to room temperature because it probably would have been even better - if that's possible. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Apparently, they have other tasty goods, but I only had eyes for the pies. Currently calculating how many I can pack for my trip home!

I will highly recommend you try the ginger molasses cookie and the fudge brownie. The top two items on the menu that I personally enjoyed. The lady at the register was very welcoming and polite.

I've purchased food from this bakery a handful of times (usually on Sundays when a lot of the Amish businesses are closed). Their cupcakes are edible but often taste stale, dry, or overly dense. Of course taste is subjective and impossible to quantify. Earlier today I stopped by RTM before I headed to work. I'd gotten a coffee from Old City Coffee and was circling the main seating area looking for a spot to sit. The Flying Monkey Bakery has a little narrow counter that faces the seating area, so I had VERY briefly set my coffee down (I'm talking maybe 10-15 seconds max) and took the lid off to stir it. It was literally the only available flat surface in sight. Almost immediately an employee poked his head around the corner and started yelling at me, which I couldn't hear over the noise of the crowd. I asked him to repeat himself and he told me "That's from Old City Coffee, you need to go do that at OCC"...and then pointedly wiped the counter from underneath me with a dishrag. I was flabbergasted 😂 maybe there's some kind of coffee rivalry going on that I don't know about lol? (To clarify, there is a sign posted that states "NO EATING ON THE COUNTER" which I obviously wasn't doing.) Based on their responses to other user comments I get a kind of antagonistic vibe from this business that doesn't make me particularly inclined to revisit their bakery...sometimes it's best to just give a person a napkin than risk establishing a reputation for being hostile, defensive and unwelcoming, unless your margins are so slim that you're willing to go to war over this kind of thing. +3 stars for vegan options and liveable wages

Google
$4 per whoopee pie and it was interesting to try but nothing amazing. It would be nice if there were sets like buy 1 for $4 and 2 for $7 but nothing of the sorts. The size were underwhelming and the flavors were nothing special. Won an award once back in 2014.. I think it's time to let the past go....

The s’mores are fantastic!! Proportions tick all of the boxes: marshmallows, chocolate chips, and graham crackers! And quick and friendly service in the terminal market. Iced coffee also very good.

This was my first time at this bakery in the Reading Terminal. I’m very picky with my desserts. The line was moving quick, so I decided to try this place. My choice desserts: Coconut Macaroon and Classic Whoopie Pie. The Coconut Macaroon is a flourless crunchy sweet treat. And the Whoopie Pie was delectably delicious. Oh my goodness, both desserts were deliciously flavorful and totally worth it. The counter people were friendly too. Definitely returning to this bakery next time I’m in the city.
