Where to Dine and Drink in Downtown Houston

"With more than 60 drafts on tap and more than 100 bottles to choose from, the Downtown outpost of this local favorite is a haven for craft beer lovers. Score a rare Lambic or get a flight of the best seasonal beer that Houston breweries have to offer and immerse yourself in the Bavarian-style influences on its food menu, with dishes including a German bratwurst plate or the Saucer Bratzel (a heaping toasted pretzel topped with gooey Swiss cheese)." - Megha McSwain, Brittany Britto Garley

Bierocracy Review - Long Island City - New York - The Infatuation

"This big Eastern European beer hall has lots of communal tables filled with groups watching sports on projector screens, and is a good spot to drink beer and eat nachos while playing drinking games with strangers. In terms of food, there are bar snacks like buffalo wings and giant pretzels, as well as mains like pork schnitzel and sausage platters. The bacon cheeseburger with crispy onions is good, but know that you’ll almost certainly wind up with melted cheese and aioli on multiple articles of your clothing. Bierocracy is on Jackson Ave a block from the 7 and G trains, so keep it in mind if you’re looking for an alternative to Radegast, Spritzenhaus, and Houston Hall." - Matt Tervooren

Google
I had honestly forgotten that there is a Flying Saucer in Houston. After being downtown to catch a show at the hobby center we decided to walk a few blocks and have a nightcap The interior is deceptively massive. Everything looked clean, the lighting was more or less intimate, and we were there late so, there was more than enough seating We were greeted by a server who asked what we wanted almost immediately. Flying Saucer boasts dozens upon dozens of different beers from around the world, and we needed a minute. We asked if we could take a seat and look at the menu and she sort of rolled her eyes and talked back to us. Maybe it was a misunderstanding because she was relatively nice the rest of the night, but that initial interaction really rubbed us the wrong way While the FS is a lot of fun, I prefer more theme or dive bars, and there are so many other ones in this area to choose from. I would definitely consider checking out the Bad News Bar Some tips: Flying Saucer has a beer tour if you want something to work towards. Ask your server how to get started. If you don’t like beer they actually have non beer options, just ask. Parking isn’t great but there are some parking garages in the area. I would recommend using a ride share just to be safe. They also do trivia every Tuesday evening - play, test your knowledge, and win prizes Cheers!!

Google
Stopped by last night for a drink and to see this landmark place. Each plate/saucer represents at least 200 different beers tried over time (and no more than 3 a night). Brought a German coworker who was beyond impressed (and that's not easy to do with Germans with American bars). Emi took care of us, and really made the experience great. Helpful, funny, and attentive. This place has overall great staff. Must try place, and I'll certainly be back.

Google
We came for a beer and a bite on Thursday night. The beers were great, but the Nacho Libre and the Hungry Farmer's cold meat board were a disappointment. I recommend coming here to drink, but the food quality is below average. The staff were nice.

Stephen M.

Google
Very cool Spot. Interesting story behind all the plates around the Bar. Fantastic service. Great selection of Beers. Great thin crust pizza. Thanks for an enjoyable stop on a wander around Houston.

Olivia G.

Google
But for this disgusting sign, I would have given the place 5 starts. Service was great, food was good. But this??? This is repulsive, unacceptable and disgusting. As an establishment, you have the ability to ok trivia names and you have the power to say no. You don’t need to make it political - it is straight up offensive. I will be following up with the GM to make sure it is taken down. I encourage anyone who is there to do the same.

Lindsey

Google
Always love to visit a Saucer, and this doesn't disappoint! The BEST Mojo wings made in the entire company!! And, as always, killer beer choices!

Drew S

Google
Great spot, huge selection of beers that will please anyone from the average drinker to the connoisseur of rare beers. Great deal on local beers for Sunday. Had the German Plate which was excellent, waitress forgot to ring it in, but they noticed promptly and without my thought of even asking they went above and beyond to make up for the small mistake. Only suggestion for improvement is one more TV at the bar. Will definitely be back in the future.

Jhordan P.

Google
My fave plate is the 12” Pie. You can choose what you want on it. Sean is a bad ass bar tender. As soon as I walk in the door he has my beer ready.
google avatar

Katarina C.

Yelp
Sean is the best bartender Vibe is fun! Honey Sriracha wings Cheese fries German potato salad Paco bowl
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute. Great environmental and mood Quality service Service is great A classic elevated dive bar
google avatar

Ron S.

Yelp
The special pepperoni pizza was not available but it was because they were out of the thick cut pepperoni. I OK'd 2 pepperoni plus the hot honey and they special ordered it and it was wonderful. Great service. It's a fun place with lots of regulars and other characters. Menu is consistent across all locations, with an enormous selection of beers.

Yelp
After a long morning flight I wandered into Flying Saucer for a late lunch. Not crowded at all and the staff were very friendly. I had the charcuterie platter (Farmer's Platter?) and it totally hit the spot. Washed down with a nice dry cider and I was set. The pic says it all!
google avatar

Walter R.

Yelp
The beer selection is extensive. The service is quick and friendly. The decor is German beer hall. Go for the German inspired food because the Reuben sandwich was pretty authentic , and the fries were crispy outside and tender inside. The chicken Pico bowl was not as good, so that's why I say stick to the German stuff.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited this awesome spot on a Monday night while in town for work. I was able to snag a table with an outlet to get some work done, and I ordered a flight to sample a variety of beers on tap. They had a great selection, including some I had never heard of before. My server was very knowledgeable, and the atmosphere around me was just what I was looking for. I ended up staying longer than I expected, so I ordered buffalo wings and a Reuben-esque sandwich, both of which were excellent. If it weren't for the fact that it would seem like I was flirting with the staff, I probably would have gone back the next night. I can't recommend this place enough if you are staying close by!!
google avatar

Tysyn E.

Yelp
I'm quite a fan of this place, they offer various deals each day of the week, the ambiance inside is very much like a pub with high ceilings & wall to wall saucers or plates signed by the individual for completing a variety of drinking tasks. The Saucer offers at least 50 beers on tap & many more on the menu. The food portions are massive & imo the Wings here are amazing at $17.99 for a 10 piece with celerys/carrots, this is definitely one of the best prices compared to most places, also ask for them extra crispy. Staff can be hit or miss, I think Saucer runs a skeleton crew, so ask for everything you need at the start, double waters & so on. You may not see your server often.
google avatar

Ellie L.

Yelp
Got here a bit too late so we couldn't try the food but the drinks were delicious, service was quick and you can sit anywhere there is also an upstairs. Loved the plate decorations.
google avatar

Raymond S.

Yelp
My kind of place. Huge, HUGE tap. I had a great, if a little strong, Belgian beer-Duvel. Don't see it here often but I have had it many times in Belgium. ok, I will save the best for last so now I will talk food. We had a Space Club sandwich that I loved, just great and great bread too. We also had a monstrous Bavarian Pretzel-congratulations it is actually bigger than the ones at the Hoffbrau House in Munich. Now, as promised, the best. Our rock star server was Casey, super friendly, prompt and really a doll. Thank you Casey!!! We will be back (next time we are in Houston). I think Casey said the bar was 24 years old-that is ancient for a bar so you know they are good (and it's a huge bar in downtown Houston).
google avatar

Scarlett S.

Yelp
I come here every Tuesday for Trivia! The food, service, and ambience are great. Sports is always on, wait staff is super friendly, and they have an excellent schedule of events happening at the bar!

Vanessa B.

Yelp
This place has an Irish pub feel with its food menu. It has a large beer menu. Unique decor of flying saucers. Service was slow for a small crowd on a Saturday night.
google avatar

Binoy V.

Yelp
Awesome bierhall with huge selection of curated beers on tap + german style pub grub. The ambiance is dominated by mostly dedicated saucers hung by the walls and some quirky decor. Servers are relaxed and helpful. Nice place for a happy hour - $5 drafts.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Good food, nice atmosphere, great service. Service is a team effort so one takes your order and another delivers your food or drink a couple minutes later. Very efficient without sacrificing personal touch.
google avatar

Yelp
10 out of 10... do recommend pretzel loaded tots with 2 fried eggs fish and chips rueben sandwich Go with a few people so you can get all that and share! You're welcome!
google avatar

Arkadiusz S.

Yelp
Super awesome selection of beer including some hard to find brews. They not only have boat load of drafts but also plenty of cans and bottles. Food is just okay!! The grilled chicken in my sandwich was very dry. Some of the bar tenders are bit standoffish. I used to tend so seeing this type of behavior screams low tips. Place is fairly big with a beer hall / long bar in the front and large sitting area in the back. There is also outdoor patio right on the Main Street.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Tremendous beer selection, maybe 100 beers on tap. Interesting ambience. Food average, service slow. It's an odd neighborhood pub. A bit on the loud side.
google avatar

Stewart M.

Yelp
Fantastic bar with an amazing amount of beers to choose from. Service is excellent, friendly staff. Really good atmosphere and personally for me there's a couple of dartboards situated in a decent area of the bar. Well worth a visit if you're in Downtown Houston

Kyle W.

Yelp
Flying Saucer never disappoints! The Saucer Bratzel is absolutely amazing! Highly recommend! I also had the Pink Pony cocktail and it was amazing too -- delicious drinks, great food, and an awesome atmosphere!
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Looked appealing from the reviews and lengthy beer list. They were out of a few beers I wanted to try and the food was average at best. Nothing memorable from eating here.
google avatar

Da Deacon H.

Yelp
When staying downtown in any city there are are a plethora of restaurants to choose from but for me depending on what time I check into my hotel I'm on the search to find a good spot in walking distance. Flying Saucer was that spot for me. Walked in sat down and a waitress appeared in less than 5 mins. She pleasant, professional, and quick with my order. I had a fried chicken sandwich with the Cajun mojo seasoning...good Lawwd it was good! Kentucky Mule for my drink as well as some sort of cider beer that was delicious as well but I can't remember what it was.... All in all great place for dinner in late evenings and 2 min walk from AC hotel.
google avatar

Heloisa D.

Yelp
Nice place to go, good ambience and the staff is really friendly! The pizza is good, Recommend!
google avatar

Tae K.

Yelp
When you think about those bars on tv where the main characters hangout, I think the Flying Saucer is that bar. A bar with a huge drink selection and plates decorated all around. To get a plate you have to drink X amount of beers they offer (I believe). I used to go to the one in Austin before it closed, so hearing Houston had one it was a go to spot. My friends and I went on New Years Eve. The service for New Year's Eve was great. Very attentive waitstaff and had no issues. The food is your standard bar food. I'd recommend coming for their appetizers. The pretzel is huge and buttery. The rocket tots are great too (there is goat cheese on them I'm not the biggest fan but they make it good). Being NYE I got mixed drinks and they were okay a bit pricier than I would have liked compared to glass size.

Yelp
Awesome beer selection and great Rueben - friendly staff, great service! A great spot in downtown Houston.
google avatar

Yelp
My 300th review and I couldn't think of a better eatery/gastropub to fill that role. Really great place! My lady bestie and I ate here a couple of times and just loved the food and ambience. Super friendly service and just a lot of fun.

Ryan D.

Yelp
Amazing food! Loved the pizza and ambience Will go again! Great beer selection ! Good staff
google avatar

Christina N.

Yelp
I came her because I heard it had gluten free beer and a great gluten free menu. It does not! However it is pretty awesome. If you like beer their selection is off the charts and the cider selection isn't bad either.

Nia H.

Yelp
This place was great! The pizza was good and $5 beers on Monday is a bonus! Will definitely be back for pizza, beer and wings!
google avatar

Pete S.

Yelp
Come for a beer and sandwich during Final 4 weekend. The beer did not disappoint- large selection of local and international favorites. Tried the arugula and prosciutto pizza - cold, hard crust and smattering of arugula. I'll pass next time. We also tried the Big Dipper - advertised on a hoagie roll - came out on sour dough. The pretzel was warm and came with spicy mustard and queso - "bussing" was the quote around the table! All in all stop by and grab a pint - stick with the pretzel!
google avatar

Cliff M.

Yelp
I thought I had already given 5 stars so I apologize in advance for the late review - best beer bar in Houston - A++ food and great service. Best spot for beer variety in Houston!!
google avatar

Cielo M.

Yelp
Food: The food was good; not amazing. We went on a Friday brunch time and it was pretty busy. It took a while to get the food to us but my group was pretty large so it was understandable. Service: The service was great! The ladies who served us were sweet, patient, and accommodating. Cleanliness: The place was very clean. The restrooms were spotless and they practiced Covid protocols. Ambience: The place is such a cool spot for a beer. The inside is covered in a million plates. I bet this is the perfect spot to hang out, maybe watch a game, or just talk and grab a beer.

Yelp
Excellent beverages and amazing chicken nachos here! My friend and I came here prior to attending a show at nearby Jones Hall. This was a large place within walking distance. The space is open and huge and I was happy to find a table right near the door. We sat down and within in minutes a server was there to guide us and see if we were ready to order. We asked for time to look at the menu then decided on a flight of beers. We got two stouts, one sour and one cider. I tasted the sour and it was phenomenal. I'm a huge fan! The nachos arrived a bit later and they were pretty good. This was the perfect place to get a bite to eat and catch up with a friend. It wasn't as loud as the reviews were saying, thankfully! Id recommend and I'd come back!
google avatar

Autumn T.

Yelp
The place was ok, pretzel app and cheese was very good (though you don't get nearly enough cheese sauce) as was the queso (chips were okish). I got a chicken Caesar wrap and side salad. Chicken was super dry, wrap was stale.. I sorta merged it into a chicken Caesar & Italian dressing salad to salvage it as I was hungry. It didn't go well but I got a few bites in. My co-workers felt everything was meh. The topper was our server.. very large table (over 20), but she was incredibly rude and notably irritated off the bat. Maybe a bad day, something going on in her life.. I don't know but I do know I certainly won't return.
google avatar

Luis T.

Yelp
Great variety of beers. Food was good, but not over the top. Definitely worth the visit.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Appalled at what I just witnessed at this location. The MANAGER on Saturday at 4:25 came and grabbed this homeless man's food that we provided food too. Literally ripped it from his possession as he was eating and said he didn't pay for it. WE PAID FOR IT. Manager gave me the most disgusting stare when I asked him return it and if he asked if the man was finished with his food. Disgusted. Will never be back. Worth a fire.
google avatar

Cerena S.

Yelp
This place was awesome! Great vibe and customer service with a smile! The food was delicious and the server was helpful in selecting a beer to my liking! No rush everyone taking their time. Spacious and great decor, of lots of saucers. The game was on Texas Rangers vs the Houston Rockets and it was a great evening in Houston!
google avatar

Kristin W.

Yelp
What a great pub! I was in Houston for a work conference and our hotel was a block away. We came in a couple times, once for food and the other for drinks. It is a large establishment with lots of seating and I believe there is upstairs seating but didn't see it. The walls were covered in plates and I didn't ask the significance of it, but some kind of recognition, probably for drinking a lot of beer. For food, I got a build your own pizza with lots of meat and arugula and with red sauce. It was thin crust and I enjoyed it. Second time in I got a fruity hard kombucha, not a beer drinker, gasp. The kombucha was interesting. More filling than I expected :) Our servers were all very patient and efficient. Definitely a cool spot to hit up if you're in the area. Wish I got a Flying Saucer shirt while there :)
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
I understand this place is more of a beer place than anything else. I did order a beer and it was good, that is the only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. I ordered fish and chips and the fry batter was practically black it was so overcooked. After my one beer I ordered 2 cocktails, one margarita which was OK, and one called "Crime of Passion" which was supposed to be a passion fruit cocktail, but I think the only crime is poisoning because both my wife and I spat that out. There was some ingredient inside that either had expired or the bartender added something they shouldn't have because I thought it tasted like a tire and my wife said to her it tasted like they added some sort of cleaner. To top it off our server was ok at the beginning, but towards the end it would take her about 15 minutes just to get a box. Another server had to help her towards the end of service. This was not a very good place and I do not think we will return.
google avatar

Tureen P.

Yelp
This place was so yummy!!! The food came out super quickly, I would say within 10-15 minutes of ordering even when it was busy. I came to Houston on a business trip and this place was close to my hotel and I'm so glad I came here!! It was so delicious I came back the next day and ordered the same thing lol. This place is a sports bar located in a very nice part of downtown. Coming here after an Astros game, it was packed!!! But that's what sports bars are about. Thanks for the hospitality.

Shelby D.

Yelp
Potato salad is divine! Love the food and the girls always play great music. Big TVs good beer
google avatar

Anna K.

Yelp
Love coming here for lunch. Never had a wait. And perhaps I'll do a happy hour there one day! It's a great downtown spot with lots of options. We like to get a tasty sandwich and fries ... and ranch! Lots of folks are having beers. I think that have a few wines and also cocktails as well. Anyway, love the food. Service us usually good. Atmosphere is fun and upbeat. Like the dark environment. Personally am a big fan of the hippie hollow sandwich. With fries. And ranch! Very tasty and filling. Especially with fries Would suggest this spot for lunch if you work downtown. And happy hour as well. Not sure it's high on the list later in the evening for those who do not work downtown but who knows? There may be a late scene I don't know about!
google avatar

Jordan P.

Yelp
Came here after an astros game. It was seat yourself and we luckily found a table big enough for our party. Our waitress was nice and did a great job. The food was really good for being "bar food". Keep in mind the food is bar food... I would not come here expecting a 4 star sit down meal, it's more 4 star drinking food. Overall, it's a chill place to go to watch sports or hangout with friends and eat and drink.
google avatar

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
Poor service. Food was meh - got a salad and had to ask for dressing which it took forever for my server to pay attention to me for me to get it. Pretzel didn't have much queso with it and what it did have wasn't very good.

Chris M.

Yelp
I went with my family in the afternoon before an Astros game. The service was exemplary. All members of my family were so pleased with the attention we received. They wanted to come back the next day.
google avatar

Yelp
Me and my buddy walked down from the office..We ordered our food as we walked to the resturant. When we ordered to eat in they said we couldn't . It had to be ordered to go only. When, we got there we had to wait a few minutes but that was ok. I love this vibe, the music the scenery I only wish that the staff would seem happy that we were there. But oh well. We ordered our food as we walked to the resturant. When, we got there we had to wait a few minutes but that was ok. We got there and advised the waitress that we would eat our meal there. I informed her that we would take care of her, just make sure we are taken care of. Well our food came out and it looked good. My buddy said that his pizza was good. My wings were great, seasoned too perfection. and hot. My fries on the other hands looked great but tasted like they were cooked in old grease.

Yelp
Well damn, it's been bout 5 years since I stepped into this place and they didn't disappoint! On Wednesdays the folks at Flying Saucer offer specials on certain beers. Tonight it was O'Neil 90 Shilling, an American Amber, very very good! I also got the Flying Buffalo Chicken Wrap with a side salad. It was so good yall, so damn good. The service was top notch too. My bartender was polite, helpful, and not a chatty Kathy.. lol, sorry, I'm just one of those, if I wana talk, I'll talk. Anyway, it was great, and even though in my last review I was justified in feeling let down due to them running out of the special beer glasses; they redeemed themselves tonight. So, Flying Saucer staff, great job all around! If you are looking for a lively place to kick back a pint or two with friends and enjoy some damn good food, this is your place!
google avatar

Amber B.

Yelp
This place is great if you're looking to go somewhere after work after a hectic day! It's downtown so it's definitely in a good area and next to other places if you want a variety. When I went, you seated yourself which was fine since it wasn't that busy yet so I'm not sure if that changes as it gets later, but I sat at the bar regardless. The bar stools are one of the most comfortable I've ever sat on honestly. Haha. The bar is huge, has plenty of seating and it's nice being able to see all of the beers that are on draft. They have a HUGE selection of draft beers as well as bottles and cans so if you're a beer lover, this is your place. I also got the buffalo wings which are very good. They're crispy, the right temperature and they're spicy but not over bearing to where you can't taste the flavor. I'd definitely get these again. They're also great to pair with a light beer! The service was ok. We had encounters with quite a few people actually and it wasn't too bad. I'd go back!
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
I'm not a beer guy so I'm reviewing only based off of the food. Well, the food sucks. Pricing is reasonable but it's labeled as typical bar food with a slightly americanized German flair. The food is below average from what I've seen.. the best thing is perhaps the pretzel. My Buffalo chicken wrap felt like a HEB precooked meal at best. Reheated frozen chicken nuggets dunked in Frank's red hot then wrapped in a pre-made Tortilla? Check. Maybe people like this place for the beer selection and hanging out with bros on weekends but the food isn't great for what that's worth.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
The service was great because of Rave'n however, when we received our bill, they added a dollar for Ukraine. I'm all about donating but at least ask and make it an option. If the company wishes to donate, maybe they should consider donating a percentage of their earnings instead of adding a donation to their patrons bill automatically. How about giving options to donate to our country like to those families who lost their children in Uvalde? This was not acceptable. Sure they give you an option to decline after they charged you however, when you're out with friends drinking and having a good time, you actually have to look at your bill to notice the extra charge of the donation and then request to decline it. This is bad business and NOT ethically right.

Yelp
We dropped into the flying saucer very late looking for a midnight snack. We decided to sit outside and enjoy the sights. The waitress was very helpful and courteous. The food was very good. We had a wrap, wings, and pizza. Don't let the pub atmosphere fool you--the food danced on my tongue! The wings were the perfect mix of hot and sweet. The pizza was amazing with arugula. It was so much food for a great price! Highly recommend!
