Seattle’s Fob Sushi Restaurant Reopens Following Keith Lee Review Backlash | Eater Seattle

"When TikTok influencer Keith Lee visited Seattle in November he focused on family-owned and operated restaurants and ultimately rated one above the rest; after his video of a piece of nigiri prompted followers to insist they saw a "worm" moving in the fish, the restaurant was forced to close all of its locations. The restaurant reopened on Tuesday, December 3, following what the owners called "a brief, voluntary closure." The operators say they used the downtime to review their supply chain, as well as their food storage and safety protocols, and “[We have] confirmed that all ingredients are safe for consumption, in compliance and up to code,” they write. They also say they were visited by Public Health for Seattle and King County on Wednesday, November 27 — some nine days after the closures — and that no health violations were found; the business retains its rating of excellent, the highest recommendation the county offers, according to the owners. “We provided all necessary paperwork related to parasite destruction in the fish we serve,” the owners said. “We have been fully cooperative with Public Health’s investigation. Health investigators will return at an unannounced time and date after reopening for an additional inspection and we welcome them at any time.” After the viral reaction to his review, Lee posted a statement on TikTok decrying any efforts on behalf of the restaurant to dissuade viewers from the idea that they were seeing a worm or other parasite; he has not posted further comment and has since moved on to creating sponcon for the Dallas Wings WNBA team in his newly adopted home state of Texas." - Courtney E. Smith

Google
FOB Sushi is such a great find! The self-serve concept makes it fun and fast — you pick exactly what you want, and it’s just $14.99 per pound. The chefs are constantly rolling out fresh sushi, so everything tastes incredibly fresh and flavorful. I tried a mix of rolls, including a few I wouldn’t normally go for, and they were all excellent. It can get busy, especially at lunchtime, and there’s not much seating, but the line moves quickly. The quality easily rivals many full-service sushi restaurants at a fraction of the price. Overall, FOB Sushi is a must-try in Seattle — fresh, delicious, and great value for the money. I’ll definitely be back!

Google
FOB Sushi Bar is a solid spot in Seattle if you’re craving fresh, well-made sushi without the fuss. The fish quality is consistently good, portions are fair, and the rolls come out nicely balanced without being overloaded with sauces. It’s casual, quick, and dependable — the kind of place you can drop into for a satisfying meal that doesn’t disappoint. If you’re in the area and want straightforward, tasty sushi, FOB delivers.

Google
This was an interesting experience. There isn’t much seating room, but we still found a place to sit. Plenty of choices and taste was pretty good. At first I was a little sketched out, because of how it’s sitting unrefrigerated, but turned out totally fine. I actually really enjoyed the lobster roll. Price is really fair too.

Google
Where do I even begin? I have been to many sushi places in South Florida so I had high standards and low expectations. I have never been to a self serve sushi bar before. This was really cool! They were constantly making new sushi and the process was very quick. We got just over 2.5 pounds at 14.99 a pound. The sushi was absolutely fantastic! Im not adventurous when it comes to sushi but I tried about a dozen types of sushi. They were all amazing. This place is an absolute must if you’re visiting or living in Seattle! Delicious and so fresg!

Google
Highly recommend! I was visiting Seattle for the weekend and ended up coming here two days in a row -that’s how good it was. After trying a mix of things the first day, I had to come back to get my favorites again (like the torched salmon and lobster/salmon inari). I love the concept because you can build your own tray however you like. Usually, with party trays, there’s always something I don’t care for, but here I could pick only what I actually wanted. The first tray was about $30 and the second was around $16. The inari was on the heavier side just because it’s dense, but everything was still perfectly balanced. They don’t skimp on the fish either — I was a little worried they’d pack it with rice, but the ratio was just right!

Jiyeong L.

Google
OMG they are so yummy! They charge by pound(14.99$) Various options for you to choose, quality is chef kiss. It isn't fishy!!!!! Staffs are super sweet too! I’ll def come back again!

Hadi C.

Google
This has to be one of the top sushi places I've been to. It's almost too good to be true. $14.99 per pound and you can pick anything you want. I ended up trying a bunch of stuff I normally wouldn't. There is barely any place to sit and the place gets really busy so keep that in mind when planning.

Em V

Google
Great place to go to for quick sushi. I love that you can pick exactly what you want and how many. Lunch time can be quite busy but line moves pretty quick. Overall, it’s a solid place and I would recommend.

Yelp
I am surprised I've never left a review for FOB. My husband and I come here often, sometimes multiple times a week! The fish is extremely tasty for the price. We feel that it is fairly fresh and tastes great, but we also love that we aren't spending so much money on sushi as we would at a typical restaurant. The staff are all very kind and you can tell they care deeply about the restaurant. We love that we're able to support a family-owned establishment and will continue to come back.
google avatar

Brenda S.

Yelp
A coworker and I stopped in for a quick lunch and decided to try their sushi-by-the-pound option. For the amount you get, the pricing is pretty decent and works well for a lunch crowd. Our sushi came out quickly, even as the place started to fill up, and there was a good variety to choose from. Quality-wise, it's about middle-grade -- fair for what you pay. The seaweed was a bit on the chewy side, but overall the flavors were fine. Seating is mostly countertop with high chairs, but many of them looked pretty worn and stained. If you're looking for a fast, grab-and-go lunch, this spot does the job. Just don't expect anything fancy -- takeout is probably the better option here.
google avatar

Tracy N.

Yelp
Pretty good quality fish and definitely worth the price, especially considering it's the only sushi place I've been to where you can choose exactly how many pieces you want of nigiri, rolls, or whatever you like. I wasn't super hungry so I got the smallest size tray and filled most of it up and it was a good amount. If I was hungry, I probably would have filled the tray as much as possible and it would have been enough. There's some seating indoors and a couple tables outside. They also have water cups and the typical side items available (ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, spicy mayo)
google avatar

Wendi K.

Yelp
There aren't many places I would say I could literally eat every day but this is one of them. I think I just died and went to SUSHI HEAVEN here. Fresh, surprisingly great quality sushi that is pay by the pound. The boxes and packaging are luxurious black and gold. The staff are very efficient at replenishing the astonishing variety of sushi/nigiri. And the way the line is organized is extremely seamless - grab a box of your choice, grab tongs, grab sushi, weigh, get chopsticks & dressings. There's a decent amount of seating inside and a table outside as well. I got sushi that filled me up for just $15. Omg, JUST GO
google avatar

Haroon Z.

Yelp
Oo this place is such good value imo. $15.99 a lb for nigiri + sushi. Sushi was pretty fresh to me and it passed the smell test for each cut of fish I ate. I even brought one box to the airport with me 2 hours after buying and it still tasted pretty fresh. Rice is mid but it's to be expected at this kinda place. I'm coming here any time I go to Seattle.
google avatar

Yin K.

Yelp
Good selection, decent quality and price by pound. Long-ish line if you come at peak hours but moves fairly quickly. Plenty of seats in/outside the restaurants
google avatar

Diane C.

Yelp
Such a cute spot for a quick, casual bite! You pay by weight, and I stuffed my box for around $25 which is totally worth it for how much food you get . Is this fancy, top-tier sushi? Absolutely not, but it's super yummy and such a great bang for your buck. I really like the inari here because the rice -to-fish ratio is good. Totally recommend!
google avatar

Marylyn T.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with anything you pick here! Quality is great for the price. Employees are always putting out new stuff and making sure it isn't out too long. It's always a must when I'm in Seattle. Great place to go in groups but it is to-go only, but I love that you can get your own sauce because I can never have enough.
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
Really great experience, the sushi & inari's were fully loaded & surprisingly quite delicious. Quick & efficient service, everything was super clean & staff was nice.
google avatar

Huong L.

Yelp
I love fob. When they were doing poke and now when they are doing sushi. They know how to do it right. This is my first time at the Seattle location and it's just as good as the Bellevue location. The fish are fresh and flavorful and melts in your mouth. Love all the different combos they have as well. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Ashlee S.

Yelp
Sushi Heaven by the Pound! FOB Sushi is such a VIBE The whole concept is genius--you grab your own set of tongs (love that it's more sanitary ) and walk down this beautiful line of sushi rolls, picking whatever catches your eye. And trust me... nothing here is basic. No boring spicy tuna or Cali rolls in sight ‍ Instead, every single roll is dressed up with fun toppings, sauces, and flavors that make you want to try them ALL. The best part? You pay by the pound which honestly is such a fair deal considering how packed my sushi box was. I wish I remembered all the rolls I tried ‍ but the recipes were so intricate and unique that it was impossible to keep track. Just know... every bite was delicious. I also love the little details: fresh ginger + wasabi packs, plus eel sauce and soy sauce you can grab at your discretion . It makes the whole experience feel customized and fun. FOB is a must-visit if you love sushi with a twist. Can we PLEASE get this concept in DC already?!
google avatar

Diana T.

Yelp
I postponed the trip to Pike Place just to come here for a quick lunch because I heard so many great things about FOB. The storefront is unassuming but has a large sign on the window. Upon going inside, you're welcomed with a WHOOOOOLE bar of sushi. The place is small but organized. You grab your box at the beginning of the line and make your way through to grab all your favorite sushi to weight at the end. My entire box of sushi was perfectly 0.99lbs. I wish we had this place in the Bay!
google avatar

Aleksandr F.

Yelp
Great location in downtown Seattle. If you're hungry and don't want to wait in line, this sushi bar is a perfect choice. They offer a nice variety of sushi -- just grab what you like, have it weighed at the counter, and pay. The sushi is delicious!
google avatar

Tina N.

Yelp
I love this concept of grab and go sushi! This place is awesome, because the sushi is actually high quality and the price is great. It's self service, so the process was quick and easy. They have utensils, sauces, and napkins in a separate area for you. Everything was so convenient. I was full and happy when I left!
google avatar

Sandy M.

Yelp
Came here twice on my trip to Seattle because it was that good! Beware of the long line, but it does move fairly quickly. This is a sushi place where you pay by the poind. There are a good variety of rolls, sashimi, and nigiri. Don't go too heavy in the beginning because there are lots of good stuff towards the end and that's how I overdid it. There are some really good nigiris such as seared salmon, salmon belly, scallop, and toro. It looks like they have slightly differently nigiris every day, so hopefully you get something good!
google avatar

Celina T.

Yelp
Fish used was not as fresh as Japan, but it's pretty decent for US. Quick service, no line. Similar to a buffet, you grab what you want and pay up front. Wished they cleaned up the dining area though. The bar seems more presentable than the dining area, but I guess most would just grab and go. I think my fav was the unagi cooked tempura shrimp tamagoyaki bean curd garlic chili.
google avatar

Willy N.

Yelp
Fantastic concept at FOB Sushi Bar! As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by the most amazing display of fresh sushi. You get to choose from so many fresh and delicious options. You would think the quality would slip with so many different options at your choosing, but every bite was exceptional! The pricing is by the pound, and it is so affordable. You are able to get the quality of fancy sushi restaurants at only a fraction of the price. You really can't miss this spot!
google avatar

Stacie V.

Yelp
Large selection of rolls and nigiri. Everything was super flavorful, def lived up to the hype! There's some indoor seating, some tables and bar seats, but I feel like it's for a quick bite and takeout place.
google avatar

Alice X.

Yelp
This place is so good! It's pretty overwhelming for newbies when they first enter the place. There's just too many sushi selections to look at! $15 a lb just too good of a deal to pass off. I will be a repeat customer. The place is pretty much a to go spot but couple of one person seats. The ladies working here are all so nice!
google avatar

Neel K.

Yelp
I was definitely worried about them after the worm incident... But wow they have bounced back better than ever. The absolute strongest comeback! If anything I actually think their nigiri has become even higher quality and comes close to comparing to the sushi I've had at popular sushi spots in Tokyo like Kaisen. I wish they made it more clear what days they have what, but when I occasionally managed to visit there when they're serving Salmon Belly? 10000/10. PLEASE TELL US WHEN YOU HAVE IT BECAUSE I ENJOY THOSE VISITS THE MOST
google avatar

Abhinav S.

Yelp
Holy $hh, this place is amazing. Super fresh and delicious sushi and sashimi for a great price. I'm generally neutral towards sushi, but this place is an exception. I'm gonna try visiting this place often. Though I usually have my dog with me, so not sure how I'll be able to quickly fill up my box if they don't allow my doggo into the store for a few minutes
google avatar

Chloe N.

Yelp
Had a short vacation in Seattle and I HAD to try this spot after hearing so many good reviews. It did not disappoint. This is my type of sushi. The variety and the complexity of each nigiri and roll made each one soooooo good -- I came here two times in the span of 4 days! Service is prompt. Interior is tight, and the chairs are a little dirty, but it was doable (and worth it) for the food and the price. I need something like this in the Bay!!! The price and quality are unmatched.
google avatar

Aubrey B.

Yelp
I thought it was priced great, the sushi was a good size and it was very clean inside. I was a bit disappointed with the options because of how few there were. The staff was nice!
google avatar

Ariana M.

Yelp
Sushi by the pound is something that I wish was everywhere. We arrived around 1:45pm on a weekday and although there were people selecting their sushi ahead of us, there was no line. You grab a tray and tongs, and if I remember correctly it's $15/lb. The selection was extensive and the size of each piece is so good! It's buffet style, and there are people watching over the sushi and making sure everything is fresh. There's limited seating inside, and it was all full at the time. Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Isra A.

Yelp
yeah..unfortunately not impressed. I like the idea. I was definitely excited to try it, but I agree with many of the criticisms (which all make sense logically) - larger rice portions (add to the weight of the box), rice did not taste fresh, fish wasn't the worst but not the best either. I mean all these criticisms are logical. You can't have an open sushi bar like this and expect fresh fish and rice, can't expect the rice to be heavier than the fish, etc. It's all part of the experience. I don't regret trying it, it was fun to pick out different pieces and it's a cute photo moment, but probably won't be back. Space was on the smaller side, but there is some seating inside and outdoor tables+chairs. Service was quick, they were rapidly replacing the options that were running low and the manager/owner was happy and quick to explain the concept of the store to everyone who walked in. Parking - street parking or a pay-to-park lot about a block away.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Some of the best sushi I've had. Everything is so fresh and their portions are huge. I love the concept of pay by the pound! You can try so many different rolls in each sitting. We paid $18 for the whole tray! Such a good deal. Love how fresh the salmon is and huge thick pieces.
google avatar

Kat Z.

Yelp
This is such a fun concept! I'd 14.99/pound and despite getting ~12 pieces, my meal was still under $20. I'm a huge fan of the variety of options and getting to mix and match. The sushi seems to be refilled frequently and the quality was good. Each piece had a bunch of ingredients on there and there were a wide variety of sushi's, nigiris, and inaris. This is a self serve establishment, except for check out. It's straight forward and a fun concept!
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Heard about this place from some friends and the hype didn't disappoint. I came here on a Saturday evening around 7pm. The place was packed and l had to wait about 15 mins in line. The inside is small and compact, with single seats around the window (no tables or booths). The outside front stairs were also scattered with people. There are so many varieties of sushi and rolls. They are nicely labeled with their ingredients so you know what you are getting. The rolls are fresh and they are constantly re-filling and rotating the rolls. In the back, my favorite section is the condiment section filled with wasabi, ginger and different condiments. I love how you can get single pieces here for a variety. Everything is weighed by the pound of $14.99. I thought the prices were fair. I felt just slightly rushed as I'm going through the line like cafeteria style and you really can't go back (as the line is moving in one direction). I do like the concept and would definitely come back. Also love the message in the to go box.
google avatar

Da-Eun L.

Yelp
Affordable sushi buffet with creative flavor combos! A lot of the sushi did seem a bit mayo-heavy and don't expect omakase-level fish quality. I was impressed with the selection though and my huge box only came out to be $19!
google avatar

Mel L.

Yelp
Didn't think we'd be so close to the viral FOB Sushi Bar! It was a dilemma for us because of the paranoia surrounding the viral video. But, we were craving for sushi so we decided to go for it. It did not disappoint. $40 for this big box of variety was worth it. We had some left over too. Maybe next time we'd go for the smaller box.
google avatar

ThuyVy N.

Yelp
Went here for a quick bite in the area. Love the idea of a pay by the point sushi spot with variety of sushi, would love one in cap hill area. All the sushi was really good and all the service was really good. Only thoughts were rhat it usually gets really busy and crowded here and I think the placement of the fridges and boxes and sushi is a bit cramped. I also kinda wish there was an easier way to see what sushi options are out because with the amount of people there it's hard to see what's down the line to see what to get. Not very much seating but I think it's more of a grab and go place but would love another spot that offers this.
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
This is such a cute concept of build your own sushi box. I love that you can try different rolls without ordering the entire roll. When I went there, they had plenty & variety of sushi rolls & nigiri. The fish is so fresh. The amount of rice was typically of what you get at a restaurant. For $14.99/lb it's quite affordable for how much sushi you can get. I was able to get two meals out of my box & was filling every time. I wished that there was something like this in the DFW area.
google avatar

David X.

Yelp
The lunch rush here is unreal. The line can take up to 15 minutes sometime. It just shows how great of value this place is. 15.99 for one pound, yet some of the selections are very high end sushi. They all taste great and is comparable to quality of fancy sushi restaurants.
google avatar

Selina H.

Yelp
The sushis were pretty good in my opinion! They tasted decently fresh and there weren't any worms in mine lol. The price for them is pretty decent too. I got a tray with enough sushi to be full and the price is a lot cheaper than ordering sushi at sit down restaurants. However I wouldn't rely on fob sushi bar to have the freshest fish around here though with the way the sushis just sit out for a while and with their reputation.
google avatar

Edith Y.

Yelp
Ok, so first off, don't be intimidated by the long line during lunch time. It moves quickly and efficiently. The concept is great as someone who appreciates buffets and all you can eats. It's sushi by the pound. You grab a box or tray and you make your way down the line picking up as little/many pieces of whatever sushi you want. At the end, they weight your box and you pay. My 10 pieces ended up being around $18 which isn't bad. Quality was good, their raw and cooked fish were delicious. If I worked in the area, I could see myself having this as part of my rotation. They have a few seats on the side if you are eating there but its not really a place for groups. Water, condiments, napkins, and utensils are self serve after you pay for your food.
google avatar

Denise R.

Yelp
It was my first time here and I thought the sushi was so good! It's like a buffet of sushi. We get to choose as many or as little sushi as we want. The line gets long but it goes by really quickly. There's some seating inside to accommodate small groups but you can also eat outside where there's steps. It's a really nice place for quick food and a good atmosphere.
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
I have seen this place go viral (for good and bad reasons) but wanted to check it out myself. They had a wide variety of different sushi all elevated with some sort of sauce and/or topping. I got a couple pieces to try and thought the quality and taste was great for a fast casual take out spot. While it's not the best quality and definitely rice heavy, it's great for what it is and has lots of options. If I worked in the area, I could see this as go-to lunch spot!
google avatar

Christy N.

Yelp
It's such a shame they went through so much controversy because this place is bomb. The location is in DT Seattle. There is usually a line, but you're not waiting for that long. Upon going in, you got multiple boxes to choose from. Then the hardest part, which sushi pieces to pick. I always get so excited so I just pick one of each to try. The flavor is better than some of the sit-down sushi restaurants I've been too. They have eel sauce and spicy mayo at the end. Spicy mayo is like crack lol. I'm addicted. You can eat inside, but it's small. I always take mine to go. This place is such a gem and I would hate for people to judge it because of social media. It's really good and I don't think there's any place that does it like FOB sushi. I would 100% recommend.
google avatar

Hucky K.

Yelp
Pros: food is tasty, impressive options for such a small establishment, obviously popular and beloved by many Cons: food is tasty but not super high quality, sushi is Americanized which is pretty common in the U.S. and not surprising, line can be very long near standard meal time, parking can be challenging
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Great quality at a great price- ya can't beat it! They do it by weight so just fill up your tray/box with whatever you want and pay after they weight it. And all their rolls are interesting too, they're not just your boring classic rolls. This whole tray was only $22! My favorite was the corn and mango Inari. Would totally come here all the time if I lived in the area
google avatar

Johnny M.

Yelp
This place is tucked away inside of a high-tech office building in the commercial / downtown district of Bellevue. I loved how much toppings they offer. For example I never had tamagoyaki at a poke place. The grab-n-go sushi was also decent, not bad for the price. Only downside is the parking: garage parking is available but it is $8/hr. If you're coming to this location to eat, I recommend parking at the nearby Safeway for free and walk over.
google avatar

Ant P.

Yelp
Oh my goddddd yes. I love this concept but I also love this quality, variety, and pricing. Specialty rolls but you don't need to commit to a whole roll. This is how it should be. The items were well stocked, love the complimentary sauces and ginger they have readily available. Service was nothing out of the ordinary. I'd come back again definitely. Love that they also have outdoor and indoor seating.
google avatar

Si Si L.

Yelp
What a cool concept! We came here on our way to the airport. Not far from the public bus route. The place is not huge. The line was out the door, but it moved quickly. Right when you walk in. You grab a box. They had different sizes depending on how much sushi you plan on getting. Then you just go down the line and pick what you want. It's nice in that you can get as much or as little as you want of each type of sushi. They also don't make too much at once, so you won't be getting sushi that has been sitting for a while. At the end, they weigh th sushi you got, and charge by weight. You might think, "oh, then it would suck that a cucumber roll cost the same as a salmon roll". I didn't see any simple rolls there. Every roll seems to have ingredients that would make it worth the price. After paying, you just grab soy sauce and wasabi packets on your own and chopsticks. Easy peasy. We didn't get a chance to eat our sushi until we were on the plane. Let's just say my kids and I loved it, and wished we had gotten more. It was a quick, fun and yummy experience. I'll definitely be back next time I go to Seattle. This place is a must try.
google avatar

Mandy W.

Yelp
Undoubtedly my favorite sushi place in Seattle. I love the build-you-own-plate concept and all of the options they have are always so good. It is my go to spot for sushi. Been a fan of FOB Poke and I feel like their food is always very fresh and have never had anyyy problems with it.
google avatar

Yixin L.

Yelp
The sushi is always so fresh and delicious. There is a wide variety to pick from and you pay by pound. The price for the quality is outstanding. Went back twice, and it never disappoints. Definitely a go-to spot for sushi!
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
Good place to get a quick sushi. After trying it after the year of hype, I unfortunately would say it's overrated. The rice didn't taste as fresh, most of the sushi's tasted the same from what I got. The price is good I suppose but if you want fresh tasting sushi, you might want to go somewhere else. This place is definitely better than your grocery store sushi however.
google avatar

Naliyah L.

Yelp
I still love coming here! There's many assortments of rolls and nigiris. They've kept some of the rolls the same, but I like how they occasionally switch them out with new ones! My favorite so far would be the shrimp roll with fish roe on top. You're not so much interacting with the servers, but they'll answer any questions you may have. It's a grab and go type of thing, so it can be a bit fast in line
google avatar

Tony H.

Yelp
A cool concept it's pretty much grab and go sushi with a good variety and nigiri to choose from. I got here about 30 minutes before they closed and they still had a good amount of freshly made sushi to pick. The set price at $14.99 per pound is a good value too. It's a cool option for fast dine in or to go sushi.
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Came here from Chicago and I had high expectations for this sushi spot since the fish would probably be fresher in Seattle. I love the concept of the sushi spot with such wide variety of options. The employee was great and thoughtful to their customers which I appreciated. I'm a tuna gal and I absolutely did love the spicy tuna with the rice and jalapeño. The other rolls were okay. In my personal opinion, it was too much rice for me. Overall, good spot to come to grab sushi. Pricing is not too bad.
