Brazilian steakhouses were born about twenty plus years ago in the Bay Area. It started with one at the start of upper Market Street.
I'd never been to one on the mainland with my only experience actually on Oahu at the start of the trend there too. This restaurant opened within the past decade, a welcome addition to SOMA, especially with the booming convention events in Moscone Center and the sprouting number of neighboring hotels. It was such a different time back then, till 2020. When the world figuratively stopped, so did the city and many of its businesses.
Coming here on the 1st Friday in April which coincided with the baseball Giants' opening day, I walked up to a crowd of people. Some wore Giants jerseys or shorts with a mix of young couples and families.
My friend hosted this dinner, a birthday celebration for another friend. Getting here a little early for a 6:15 pm reservation, the lobby area was packed with people (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=tqP7Hpz9MrMiGkJZIy0rYg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). I guess the logistics are pretty similar with other Brazilian steakhouses with a bountiful salad bar, buffet style, before your main meal or the meat courses. We were given cheesy puffy breads that one friend found addictively good, crispy polenta, caramelized bananas, and mashed potato plate to share. The salad is definitely more than salad with a variety of cold meats including prosciutto and charcuterie style meats, smoked salmon, and fruits. To the side, there was a table with white rice, beans, and a soup tureen. After getting my 1st plate from the salad bar and munching on the provided sides, the experience began. Using the provided message coaster (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ehS3K04IZQeD16_2r8gbxg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) or (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=LO9xUBn3muBmHfSZayZ7Kw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), each diner flips it to tell the walking carving staff whether you'd like to try their offerings. Consistent with most buffet afficianados' behavior, we saved our stomach space mainly to enjoy the variety of meats with varying sources, cuts, and forms (ie beef, lamb, chicken, and pork; sirloin, ribeye, tenderloin; bacon stuffed, sliced, and sausage). I liked almost all of the meats as most were either rare or medium rare. My only regret was not being able to try the tenderloin which I didn't see being offered in our two plus hours there. Being a soup person, I finished the savory portion of my meal with the spicy tomato soup, which I sprinkled with the provided Parmesan cheese (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=9qG2UecIceBvzpCO36w79A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). I enjoyed how spicy it was, bold and appetizing. We were offered three dessert choices of which I tried the Tres de leches cake (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Sy3Xj7DE0mXD5nm3HFaJJw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). I could only finish half of it, bringing the unfinished half home. About halfway through my meal, I studied the QR code menu and ordered a Paradise Spritz (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=uBuDvTpV63MJm9ofkPM65w&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), which our waitress described as a mix of pineapple and guava juice. It was a welcome flavor change from the seasoned and salted meats that we feasted on.
As our meal came to a close, a gentleman came to our table and checked on us, asking us how we enjoyed our meal. He made a few jokes and shared his business card with us which read Milton, gaucho. Though he was amusing, our waitress was the star of our experience, refilling our water glasses and replacing the shared sides that were provided. I didn't catch her name and, not paying the bill, I don't have her name. She worked the tables in the dining room just behind the greeting podium. I enjoyed this meal and would dine here again for celebrations and get togethers. Given my advanced age though, I can't afford to dine like this often. Oh, and big thanks to Al L. (https://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=8qpFUPR1wd3uz8N1QaWj_A) for his generosity in treating us to this meal.
