Where to Eat and Drink Around St. Philip’s College in San Antonio

"The vibe is a bit at this punky Government Hill spot, but the coffee drinks smooth out all the rough edges. Try the Siouxsie, a latte made with Mexican chocolate, cinnamon, and roasted marshmallows. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Brandon Watson

Stopped by after seeing them on IG and it did not disappoint. They were open on 4th of July weekend despite the heavy rain. We absolutely enjoyed the food, the vibe, the music, the service. It is targeted for a specific demographic and they nailed it! Happy to support local businesses and our community. This place did not disappoint.

Google
The place is cozy and spacious. I can't comment so much on the service because she only said about 5 words, but it seemed overall welcoming. The drink choices were lacking for me. They do make them iced and hot, but they were a little over the top with flavors in the very few choices they had. I do like the knock box style machine they use. My drink was just ok. Heavy on the sweets, not strong enough. Despite the cozy environment, the vibe is completely distorted by the violent metal music blasting at you so early in the AM. It can wake you up for sure, but I was just wanting a place to relax on my morning off. This is a good place for a specific audience. It was just not my cup of tea.

Rad coffee house with Beetlejuice and punk rock vibes. Fun coffee flavors that don't miss. Staff that knows how to take care of their customers. You won't regret visiting this place!

Google
Can’t drink coffee, so I was looking for matcha tea. Did a search on my GPS and it took me here. I’m so glad it did! Matcha was delicious! The place is great! Will be coming back. Service was also great!

You gotta love a good punk themed coffee shop. I love the decor. Service was great. Nice vibes & music playing. I ordered the iced vato rudo, which was superb & croissant chicken salad sandwich. The sandwich was delicious! They do have downstairs & upstairs seating. Get you a couple of stickers to rock the Folklores brand.

I needed a place to study for a few hours. Ummm?! Of course need coffee and some eats. I only had black coffee BUT....they can take care of any of your coffee needs. Service was great. Atmosphere is chill but music is high energy without being overbearing.

Somehow, Folklore Coffee found its way into my life through the magic of the world wide interwebs. On a cold, blustery San Antonio winter Saturday, I finally had the chance to stop in—and I was not disappointed. From the moment we walked in, the welcoming staff made us feel right at home. As if that wasn’t enough, we happened to glide right into a poetry slam, adding an unexpected and awesome vibe to the experience. The lattes were light, delightful, and crafted by some of the happiest baristas I’ve seen in a while. To top it off, I enjoyed a very tasty bagel that hit the spot. Y’all have got to visit this all-inclusive coffee shop—great drinks, great atmosphere, and even greater people!

Super cute place! Really good options! Good atmosphere and service! Google maps is not accurate but it’s close by all these other things too if you park in the wrong spot

Yelp
I will just leave you with this: The Sheena: A blend of banana-infused milk, espresso, and cinnamon, topped with a brûléed banana half. 10/10 Recommend Service is always great & Ambience so fun!! We have been here too many times to count!

Yelp
From out of town but we love trying local coffee shops. We really enjoyed our coffee here. I got the cowboy (espresso with protein. Added another shot) and my husband got the bexar. Loved how different this coffee shop is. Staff was friendly and had no problem giving us a moment to order. We will be back next time we are in town again!

Yelp
Ohhhh Folklores Coffee House, you are the coolest little spot to come in and either chill out with a great coffee or pick one up to-go. Now that you moved around the corner from your original OG spot I like you even more! Now you got a second level with couches and a whole good vibe going up past the coffee bar. You are so so dreamy now and with all this room I am jealous I haven't been able to come in when you got live music or musicians playing. There are tables for couples or groups to meet nearest the register. I also noticed there is a cold case filled with other drinks in bottles as well if you are feeling another way of getting caffeinated (without coffee) on soda or have a Topo Chico. Looooove the decor, posters, and the even the community board around the corner of the coffee bar/register. Be sure to check it out read that during a few nights within the week or month there are book clubs, hangouts, and get togethers that make this spot their meet up spot. Service is fast but depending on when you go (weekend verses week day) you may have to wait a little but chill out. Take a look at the artwork on the walls, ready the community board, and / or connect to the WiFi and browse your socials. All of the coffees and drinks they offer here are super unique and always make me smile on the naming conventions for their drinks. I recently went during Halloween and they offered lattes and iced coffees with the coolest names themed around Halloween. Also if you are not into coffee no worries - they have juices too. I also love that they now offer bagels, croissants, and even oatmeal for you to get if you come in during the morning time. Don't even bother by going to chains around this area for your coffee or juices - you need to come here and support a local spot that makes you feel like you are hanging at your coolest friends house.

Yelp
I love horror and coffee so this place did it for me. The lady was very friendly and the cafe set up was really cool. I got the Cuban latte which was really yummy with the croissant brie and strawberries

Yelp
Love the vibes of this place!! Staff is super friendly and welcoming. If you don't know what to get ask them for recommendations and you cannot go wrong! Parking is in the back of the building past the gym on the corner.

Yelp
So I can't have coffee, and I had no electricity at the house because of the rain, so I couldn't make my matcha at home, i searched for local coffee shops close to work, and this gem came up! So glad it did. See, I refuse to go to big chain coffee shops! Would rather support local economy. Will be coming back, best matcha EVER! Great service and it's super cute in there.

Yelp
Great coffee meets Tex-Mex punk. Been coming here for years and glad they were able to move to a location that allows them to maintain a very unique vibe while also offering the more "traditional" local coffeehouse setting. The bean blend is my favorite in all of SA; they get their beans from What's Brewing, which is my favorite coffee spot, but the blend is exclusive and can only be purchased in-house at Folklore. Staff is always friendly and makes drinks to specifications. Always excited to stop in.

Yelp
I feel like I've been hearing about this coffee shop for years but it was not at all what I expected - the horror/punk theme was somehow a surprise despite being a big part of their brand. Came by on a weekday afternoon for drinks after a day at the zoo. The barista was super friendly, and I like that the menu has a mix of traditional coffee and tea drinks with some unique specials - my mom had their version of a horchata latte with caramel while I had the rose vanilla latte special, and my husband had a hot chai. We all enjoyed our drinks and it was nice to get out of the sun for a bit in their large dining room. I wish this spot had been here when I went to UIW!
google avatar

Yelp
My go-to hot coffee is sugar-free vanilla latte. Not many spots still offer SFV but Folklores does! Best part was super cool barista who made that delicious SFV latte with coconut milk. Great service. And happy to see the alternative milk options to more than just almond milk. The ambiance is super chill with a vibrant, edgy and nostalgic decor. There's a comfy loft if you want to hideout and enjoy your treats. Bonus is there is a small parking lot right next door.
google avatar

Gabby M.

Yelp
got the bexar latte and it was sooo good. the barista was super nice when i asked her about her favorites since they had a lot of specialty drinks. they had a good amount of tables to do work. i will 100% be back
google avatar

Iliana H.

Yelp
The theme really is grunge and is heavily decorated that way from the seating area to the bathroom. I honestly just wasn't a huge fan of the lattes. They also were very stern about their five o'clock closing and we were scooted out the door so the barista could leave.
google avatar

Tom W.

Yelp
A funky '80's Punk- themed shop with a radical vibe that makes an excellent espresso served quickly with a smile and accompanied by some great music tracks. I had a cappuccino which was perfectly made and drank it in their loft lounge up the stairs in the back (it's great as long you don't mind it being warm). If you are going to Ft Sam and want a cuppa joe, it's just outside the gate.

Yelp
If you come here for a regular latte it won't do much satisfaction. However if you come here to get one of their creations then you would be happy you did. This is not a place to get a good standard latte but a place to go all out. The service is good and the upstairs is a nice little nook for a book although the music is more rock music then coffee music. I give it a 3.5 but since there is not half system I'll go to 4 as I choose wrong at first but was glad I got of their there crazy creation after my regular latte. Banana milk latte does not reach Bright levels but is okay. Get anything with marshmallow here.

Yelp
What a fun hidden spot near the quadrangle. Loved all the art on the walls. I was told several items were donated and many of them have interesting backstories. Apparently, some of the skateboards have been donated by a local well known skater who signed them. Some of the pictures featuring famous artists were donated by a local who loves that the owner takes a day to give all the daily earnings to the baristas. How amazing and how often do you find such generous bosses like this?! I ended up with a chocolate banana americano and it was delicious! My only issue was parking. Best to get here early to get parking out front or in a tiny parking lot around the corner. The rest is parking at your own risk. It's a bit small inside so not great for large groups, but great for solo , couples or on the go. I will have to come back on another day I can get here early and try some of their other coffees and goodies.

Yelp
This small grunge/ punk rock/skater /ska / 'Rocky horror picture show' themed coffee shop is located in a not so busy part of town. I came here for a private show a friend played his music at and let me tell you the selection of caffeinated sweet drink were soooo delicious! The sweet pastries we got here were sooo yummy and original! So anyone that enjoys a little weirdness in their life mixed with sweet coffee drinks and pastries you need to check this place out like yesterday! The owner is really nice and the whole place has a unique retro cool style about it! I loved the color of the tinted glass windows here and the pretty plants in their cool pots!
google avatar

Yelp
We really enjoyed the campy spookiness of this coffee shop! We found free parking in a small parking lot nearby but it looked like there was more parking in the back of the building. This location has an upstairs room that you can reserve for free as long as your party is purchasing drinks. They have fun themed drinks that are quite delicious. We had the pumpkin spice and nutshell, both were great. Loved the decorations! They have craft nights and other events here as well. Follow them on Instagram to keep up with their latest news.
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
This coffee shop is really cool! I had the pumpkin horchata coffee! You tasted all the flavors and it didn't overwhelm the espresso! The place has a rock vibe and a private nook at the top of the stairs! The baristas are friendly and attentive! I will be back again! Especially since there's a a brewery next door!
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
I loved the coffee here! So many good options that a lot of other coffee places don't have to offer. I got their pumpkin churro latte and I asked the barista to please make it not too sweet. She made it perfect! I also liked the decorations inside very cute! :)
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute little coffee shop with yummy drinks, nice merch, and great art. I ordered the cowboy(iced) and it was very sweet with really no coffee flavor - more of just a vanilla protein shake taste but it was good and I'd order it again. The cowboy I was told only comes in a medium...but as a recommendation to the store, I would serve it in a large and dilute a tiny bit of the sweetness by adding more coffee to it. That would have made it perfect. It's a bit too small for quiet book reading, working etc. As it can get loud when there are a bunch of people in line in a small place. I hope to come back when I'm in town again and I recommend others to try this place out.

Yelp
Tatu is the man!!!!! LOVE this coffee house. When we want something special besides our Valero coffee, we don't go to Starbucks we come here! The staff is awesome! If you're in the area come here!
google avatar

Yelp
Iced Bexar 1/2 sweet with oat milk was so so good. This coffee shop is so awesome. I love the decor and throwback to movies like Beetlejuiceand Little Shop of Horrors. Love this gem of a coffee shop.

Yelp
Amazing drinks, great music & superb customer service. This is my husband and I's new favorite spot only regret is not finding it sooner
google avatar

Amber P.

Yelp
Such a chill, relaxed vibe! I love this place. But, I also don't do well w coffee, hello caffeine headache lol. But! Their drinks are soooo good. When I was ordering, the cashier and I were just talking, talking, talking that I actually forgot to order my breakfast.

Yelp
Folklores Coffee House is a unique coffeehouse that gives you a mixture of feelings once you step inside. It feels like a mixture of fun, novelty, folklore and coffee. The place is small, the ceilings are high, and the wall art is everywhere. I ordered the iced Siouxie Latte for myself and a bagel for someone else. I walked around to view the wall art while I waited on my order, which was an additional treat. The barista was kind and completed my order pretty fast. The latter was really nice and I enjoyed the toasted marshmallows on top. I was told that the bagel was delicious as well. I will put Folklores Coffee House on my list of places too stop by when I'm back in the area.

Yelp
One of the coolest coffee shops I've ever been in. We're just visiting but I will definitely want to come back next time we are here. Really good coffee and hot chocolate. Punk, metal, and horror fans will love it here.

David P.

Yelp
Chill spot with a Chill vibe. Good people & Good coffee. Iced Bexar latte pinpoints the taste of San Antonio. Definitely give this place a try.
google avatar

Galicia L.

Yelp
I had been dying for a banana latte for literally months before I moved back to San Antonio and I happened to stumble upon Folklores where I had the pleasure of ordering the Sheena latte iced without the caramel. Jesus I genuinely have never had better coffee. Currently writing this in the parking lot because of how much this coffee slayed.
google avatar

Ino R.

Yelp
Cozy little coffee house. With plenty of options for the coffee fan. This first visit, I went with the Siouxsie, a roasted marshmallow and chocolate topped caffeinated delicacy. If you're a coffee commoner like me, maybe this option may be slightly a bit too much. It was good, but very rich, and the marshmallows temporarily complicate on the go options...I made the time, and enjoyed every sip. I also ordered a strawberry pop tart, from Cakes by Felicia. It was amazing. I was torn between the pop tart and the apple pie, but... the pop tart looked fancier. Pop tart was bigger than your Kellogg's size, it lasted just as long . Great pastry. Tha ks Felicia. I would certainly make another stop by there if I'm that side of Post. There are competing coffee shops on the same corner. Street parking is available. Some lots in the back.
google avatar

Bridget A.

Yelp
Great service, great coffee, great atmosphere. I've tried most of their specialty coffees and they've all tasted good! Love all the art in the shop, and they have a super cute and comfy seating upstairs area.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Really great vibe! The prices are good and so is the coffee. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Ambar A.

Yelp
the coffee is good and I got a croissant not knowing what would be in it and it saved my life. It had cheese and ham and PESTO!! it was incredible. The server was super nice and the place is really cool. There is a lot of art, mirrors, it's like spooky old-godzilla themed. The only complaint is that the music was BLARING and it was like a scream-o songs so my ears were kind of bleeding, but besides that everything else was great.
google avatar

Alvin L.

Yelp
One of the best cold brew coffees I've had. The regular cold brew tasted well extracted with hints of toffee/caramel, just slight acidity to balance. I usually order my cold brews black
google avatar

Howard K.

Yelp
Recommended by a local in the area, and they did not disappoint. I was able to grab a cup of coffee and a little breakfast on the way to meet a client. Loved the vibe and the folks inside. Everyone was super friendly and welcoming. But most importantly the coffee was on point!! I'll definitely be coming back if I'm in the area and would recommend to others!

Yelp
Let's talk about Folklores...this is an amazing San Antonio based coffee shop located in the historic government hill area. They always are friendly with a variety of delicious drinks with a punk rock nostalgia vibe. They always clean their machine regularly and espresso valves after each use. The Vato Rudo is my favorite and I frequent this establishment. Go check them out also if you want something off the menu they are able to assist and make it for you. Go check them out. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Yelp
As a coffee lover, I wanted to like the coffee my husband and I ordered so bad, but I just couldn't. It had a weird flavor and aftertaste. We ended up wasting it and threw it away.

Victoria S.

Yelp
Service was so accommodating and thank you for the suggestions, the coffee was good! I appreciate the cute little vibe and little loft upstairs.

L G.

Yelp
Took a business trip down to San Antonio and I was staying at a Nearby hotel and was walking around to the military base and found this gem and went in and ordered the Vato Rudo. The vibe inside the coffee shop was so amazing.

Alex D.

Yelp
The Service was great, and I like the matcha drink that was made for me ... it did not have to be strictly from the menu.
google avatar

Cynthia T.

Yelp
My last review was back in 2018?! They're not even in the same location anymore! No, no, let's have an update. Oh. They're still awesome. Let's expand on that, haha! Now located in Government Hill, the downsize in size does not mean a downsize in service and flavor. The eccentric flavors still exist, and they are still super happy to see and serve you. There's only two tiny tables for seating, but totally not worth docking points, especially with drinks like The Bexar Latte. I felt like a little honey be(x)ar enjoying this sweet drink! So GLAD that longtime favorites like The Siouxsie and the Sheena are still on the menu, too! Newer drinks like the Vato Rudo and Cuban B. Latte were also enticing, and had I not eaten, I would have ordered their oatmeal, because I remember that being super delicious the last time I was here, like 4 years ago. If you're the artsy kind, you need to swing by and admire all the gorgeous art, too. I'm super happy I stumbled across their newest home. I was reminded how creative and tasty their drinks were and how goshdarn nice they are, too.

Yelp
A friend organized our own "coffee crawl" this last weekend, and this joint was one of the places we tried. I've actually had the place bookmarked for some time and I'm glad I was finally able to try it. Opted for the Cuban B latte, which I'd definitely get again. I always get my flavored lattes "half sweet" because I'd rather feel like I'm still drinking coffee than dessert - and as usual - the drink came out just sweet enough for me. Personally, I think the shop is kind of in a strange location, on Grayson right across the street from Ft. Sam Houston gives the area a partially abandoned feeling. And, it's too far to walk from the Pearl. Not a whole lot of traffic inside the gates of Ft. Sam on a Saturday. Just felt strange. There were a few vendors selling items on the street in front of the shop, but I just couldn't shake the - "why here?" feeling. I hope they know something I don't know. The biggest downside to this location: seating - there is none - not really. The shop is designed in a long shotgun way - a couple of benches on either side of the door will accommodate maybe four comfortably - and very limited outside seating. It's definitely a "pick up and go" layout, which was a drag for a group of guys looking to hang out and chat. Isn't the point of a neat, locally owned coffee shop to get people to hang? Definitely has that potential - very cool vibe - but there is just nowhere where you don't feel like you're in the way of everyone walking through the door. Overall, really enjoyed the latte; I wish the shop was bigger.
google avatar

Kenia S.

Yelp
I got a Chagaccino! I was a bit skeptical to try the mushroom coffee because it was my first time but I trusted the tastebuds of the barista! It was the perfect flavor, I ordered it hot and it tasted a bit earthy, not too sweet, and surprisingly tasted not much different than a coffee based latte. Service was speedy and I was greeted so kindly on my way in and out! Will definitely come here againnnn, woohoo!
google avatar

Xenia M.

Yelp
One of the best coffees I've ever had. Service was fast and welcoming. Atmosphere is great, especially Audrey II.
google avatar

Jorge G.

Yelp
Great coffee spot, creative drinks. Service was fantastic. Food was also delicious. I've been back multiple times and this place does not disappoint.
google avatar

Nanisi W.

Yelp
This was a cute coffee shop! We visited when we came to town for the weekend. I ordered the Cuban and Souxie lattes. They were so delicious! There was no one there when we arrived at opening, unfortunately the wait was pretty long. It took about 20+ minutes to get our drinks. Later we figured out they had to go to the store to buy milk. I wish we would have known that since we were on our way to an important meeting,
google avatar

Shanesta H.

Yelp
This place was amazing. The wall art, love of music, and the notorious plant! I came for a vanilla latte and it was delicious, but they have other awesome drinks too! Service was great, and I love the vibe! You should come too :-)
google avatar

April H.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance, food and Baristas were so nice and friendly but I'm sorry I did not like the coffee/drinks . I got a ham and cheese croissant which was so good but the iced matcha latte was just ice and milk, I even asked for more matcha but the flavor just wasn't there so I ended up order something else (an iced americano with hazelnut syrup) again the favor just wasn't there. The drinks were unfortunately not good. I loved everything else about this place and REALLLY wanted this to be my next coffee shop to work out of because I love the vibe.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Cool vibes alert! I remember when Folklores started up on the Southside of SA and they infused flavor with passion by showcasing what they could do with coffee and morning treats! I love the ambiance of this new place. This area is expanding now and you can find this place busy on the weekends. Their decor is so fresh and their coffee is too! The flavor profiles are diverse and anything can be made with whole milk, oat milk or almond milk. The staff is friendly and is always supporting local small businesses by allowing them to do pop up shops on various weekends throughout the year. Check them out! You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Quaint little specialty coffee shop. Stopped in with my trusty coworker to grab a coffee because our office was freezing. We had the Siouxsie and OMG! It truly was delicious. We both said the marshmallows were magical, because they were huge and refused to meltdown (you will use that provided spoon). Eating the marshmallows at the end of your coffee is like an added bonus/treat. Perfectly toasted, cinnamon-y deliciousness! Everyone inside is kind and willing to answer any questions you may throw their way.
