Rick Bayless Shutters a Standalone Restaurant for the First Time in Chicago - Eater Chicago

"Fonda Frontera, a restaurant by Rick Bayless, has closed after three years in Wicker Park. Initially opened as Xoco Bistro in August 2014, it rebranded to Fonda Frontera in November 2016 following slow business. Despite strong weekend business, weekday crowds thinned, leading to the restaurant's closure. Bayless expressed gratitude to guests and mentioned challenges faced, including efforts to evolve the restaurant's menu and concept." - Alisa Hauser

The food was good and the drinks were better. The service was good as well but one of the dishes we asked for didn't get to the table. The plantain rice only had two slices of plantain. The food was salty. It's not kid friendly since they don't have slings.

This place is great! I brought my Turkish friend here (so totally different tastes) and we still loved everything. The ingredients are really fresh and the dishes are full of flavor. We thought the service was excellent too with all the waiters adjusting and personalizing our orders since we can not eat very spicy dishes. The atmosphere was relaxed and eclectic with excellent music. We came on Sunday for lunch and I would come again any another time!

the waiter was slow. the tables are close together. the chips and salsa cost extra. but the food was amazing. i was in such a grumpy mood about this place until i got the food and it was awesome. the waiter also hooked us up with an extra chips and salsa because he knew we were starving. highly recommended.

Nice restaurant in the heart of Wicker Park on Milwaukee. They have a bar area with big bay windows they open in nice weather while you wait for your table. Open kitchen to see what goes on behind the scenes which is always fun to watch. Food is very rich in flavor and lots of different Mexican styles to choose from. The seafood guacamole appetizer is very good. The Chiliquiles and the seafood cazuela (both pictured below) were amazing and the Chiliquiles was easily enough for a second meal later! This is a Rick Bayless restaurant and I've never had a bad experience at one of his places!

Delicious! Great Mexican food. The half chicken entree was awesome. Tacos al Carbon are great. Loved the guacamole. They open it up during favorable weather which is nice. Also has a patio area. Cocktails are reasonably good and they have beer that's worth drinking, though not exactly a huge selection.

EDIT: After a few more trips, I'm dropping another star. The food is consistently overpriced (5 bucks for a side of rice!?), and the service has been poor every time we've gone since I wrote this review. We just can't justify going here anymore when there are so many more reasonably priced options nearby that are just as good or better. We've been here a few times now, and it's been hit or miss (more hit than miss, though). It is definitely more on the expensive side, with some prices being pretty ridiculous (5 bucks for a side of white rice? Really?) and the amount of salsa that comes with a 3 dollar order of chips & salsa is way too low. But, the Tortas are top notch and the brunch menu is pretty good too. As far as service goes, its always been good except the last time we went. Our waitress was pretty inattentive despite it not being terribly busy, and took a good 10 minutes to pick up our check after dropping it off despite us giving no indication we were sticking around. We'll probably end up going here once in awhile, but the high prices combined with some mediocre experiences will probably end up keeping this place out of our regular rotation.

Food was delicious, but portions were quite small for the price. Our food was never turned in to the kitchen, so we waited and waited and waited, until we asked where our food was. It wouldn't have been a problem except one of our group needed to leave. To make up for this, we did get free churros (so good), but that's the discrepancy for not being 5 stars. I would still go back, just make sure you're not in a hurry!

We only had desserts, so I can not speak to the rest of the menu. The churro is the best I've had outside of Texas and Mexico. The chocolate is exceptionally good. I had the flan, which I liked, but not as much as the chocolate dip for the churro. Skip the mediocre coffee and have hot chocolate instead. We also sampled the guacamole, which was excellent. There was a swarm of people just clearing out as we headed in, so the rumors that this place is busy busy are true. We lucked out on timing.
