The 26 Best Restaurants in Panama City | Eater

"Mamá Gallina offers the kind of home-cooked dishes that have fed generations of locals. Located in the heart of Obarrio, this fonda has expanded in recent years to welcome more customers into its open-air dining area without straying too far from its roots. The staple combo of arroz, poroto (spiced, stewed red beans), and meat (shredded beef, baked chicken, or chicken stewed in rich tomato sauce) reigns supreme here. Don’t miss the sides: tajadas (fried ripe plantains) or plátano en tentación (plantains caramelized in brown sugar and cinnamon). Fresh chichas (fruity drinks) like pineapple rice or passionfruit juice make the perfect pairing. Join the buffet line and let the aromas of sofrito guide you." - Jorge Chanis

Fonda Mama is one of the must-try local food establishments in Panama. The staffs don't speak English but they are very helpful. The food is great, especially the chorizos and fresh juices.

DISCLAIMER: this is not a restaurant with luxuries servers or whatever. This is a typical Panamanian food and excellent savory of what Panama is. One of my favorite go-to vegan spots if I want to save some cash. The portions are relatively good. I order a plate of rice, lentils/beans, and sometimes "tajadas". Once paid, choose a table (if eating inside) and find one of the spicy Caribbean sauces. Is not super spicy, but it does add a good umami taste and kick. A plate of rice + lentils is 2.25$ (or 2.75$ I don't remember). With the tajada, is like an extra 1.50$ for 2 tajadas (normal portion)

We loved this place! So cheap, delicious and authentic. Our Spanish wasn’t great but the locals helped us translate and everyone was super friendly. We would definitely come back and highly recommend this place for an authentic experience.

We were looking for a place frequented by locals in Panama, and Mamá Gallina definitely delivered. The ladies at the counter were very patient with us as newbies to Panamanian cuisine and helped us choose what to order. Even a lady who was in line after me helped us! The food was good, and the portions were abundant (by our European standards). Prices are very affordable compared to other places in Panama. For example, I ordered a full meal (see photo) for about $8. Credit card payment is available. There is no air conditioning, but fans were enough to keep us cool enough on a very hot day (34°C).

Food was cold, lacked flavor, and cashier attempted to give a marked up price for foreigners. First and last time at this place.
