Came to Food Fix Butcher and Baker with a friend for a weeknight dinner catch-up. Apparently this place was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri, so I was excited to try it!
Located right off 11th Street next to
With the large black shades covering most of the storefront, signage is almost non-existent. So when I accidentally walked next door to the bakery, I thought the restaurant was closed. After walking back to my car across the street did I realize I attempted to enter the wrong establishment. Whoops!
The inside consists of a bar area and an ordering counter for food. There are also a couple of arcade cabinets, which gave the place a cool vibe. You order at the counter and then seat yourself.
We ordered:
- Banh mi nachos - I liked the wonton chips, but the flavor profile was NOTHING like a banh mi. Tomatoes? Lack of pickled carrot/daikon. My head is in my hands with the gentrification/misnomer of this dish. Do not call this Banh Mi nachos, please.
- Crossfade tacos - Super oily/dripping wet, and honestly $13 for 2 tacos seems like highway robbery? The meat wasn't the star, and instead the tortilla was all I could taste.
- Luau tacos - Definitely more flavorful than the Crossfade, but only because the pineapple overpowered the dish. Both taco dishes came with pickled jalapeno and carrot on the side, which felt a little out of place (since the tacos were very fusion vs. traditional Mexican).
- Swine Dive sandwich with red pepper chipotle mac n cheese - The Swine Dive was SO salty. The au jus only made it saltier and greasier. The mac n cheese had a nice spicy kick, but the Cheeto dust that they sprinkle on top was very stale.
We were SUPER hungry so finished mostly everything despite not everything tasting as good as we hoped.
Coincidentally, we came on a Thursday in which the establishment hosts trivia nights with KingTrivia.com. We were able to stick around for 2 rounds, but this seemed like such a fun spot to play trivia and grab a beer or two with friends.
I could not see myself returning to Butcher & Baker for its food, but could possibly be convinced if it's for trivia night.
