D.C.’s Refugee-Run Delivery Kitchen Adds Packaged Food From Other Companies - Eater DC

"D.C. restaurant incubator Foodhini was ahead of the curve when the novel coronavirus reached Washington. Operating out of a kitchen in Brookland, the company was built as a delivery service that gives partnered refugee chefs a place to share their food and culture. Although it has added pop-up stalls at two local Whole Foods stores and has moved into catering, delivery orders have sustained Foodhini during a dine-in ban put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19." - Tierney Plumb

Foodhini is incredible. The food is (deliberately) delivered cold, with comprehensive reheating instructions, usually in the oven or microwave. Everything reheats very, very well. In terms of the food itself, there's such a great selection, and everything is super tasty. Foodhihi also provides the opportunity to buy "welcome meals" for recently arrived Afghan families, which is such a great idea. Good food for you, good food for families in need.

Such a flavor packed meal! I was least excited about the crispy tofu lettuce wraps and they were the best part! We also had a curry soup and Afghani eggplant dip. Seriously the best take-out we've had in months.

I wish I could shout from the rooftops to get everyone to try Foodhini. I'm a person who never writes reviews, but my experience with Foodhini was so overwhelmingly positive that I couldn't resist. We ordered a Laotian menu of scrumptious deliciousness that I cannot begin to describe. My husband liked some dishes more and I liked others, but each dish was so subtle and yummy and the portions were very generous. Truly, the whole experience from beginning to end was exceptional. Food was excellent. Customer service was tops - so responsive when I had a gift certificate malfunction of my own making. Delivery, packaging, instructions on reheating all super helpful (my only wish is that I'd been clear that we don't own a microwave). And of course the concept is wonderful. We made it through the entire pandemic without doing any delivery food... Until now and Foodhini is the only service we'll use from here on out.

We really enjoyed our vegetarian selections. The food was so nicely prepared and flavorful. We were easily able to coordinate the delivery. I got a nice note from one of the chefs. We took the food with us on a picnic and it was so enjoyable to have the tastes from around the world as if made for their own families.

Google
foodhini was awesome! nothing but great things to say about the customer service and the food (for a very good price too). i love the personal touch they added too when we had chef mam's laotian food delivered for a dinner party we had. all of it was delicious but the laotian lettuce wraps were probably our favorites. 100% would recommend and order again.

I get the packed meals at whole foods every now and then. It is delicious nicely flavored. The vegan split pea and spatini is my favorite.

Google
We tried a dish from each chef last week and all of them were stellar - I only wish we had discovered Foodini earlier!

We get the weekly meals delivered to our house in Arlington and they are always delicious! Highly recommended.

Yelp
#ThankYouThursday to Foodhini for bringing heart and soul to food delivery services! High quality, delicious food from and often hard-to-find cuisines from talented local chefs at reasonable prices with a low delivery fee and no subscription required. But wait, there's more! I've been relying more on food delivery in the pandemic but third party food delivery services make me uneasy as they don't always seem to benefit restaurants. Foodhini, on the other hand, employs immigrant and refugee chefs and celebrates their stories. One of their chefs that I ordered from recently is an Afghan refugee and there's currently an offer to buy a welcome meal for Afghan families arriving in the US. It's easy to feel helpless when seeing chaotic world events unfold; while buying someone a meal may not fix the big problems, it is nevertheless a small act of consequence. If you haven't already tried Foodhini, stop reading and make an order now. And you're welcome :-)

Yelp
Thanks to our neighborhood drop, I was able to try food from other cultures that I normally would not have. First up, is the Cangrillont. This is a salad dish from the Ivory Coast. It consists of shaved zucchini, eggplant, cucumbers, onions, carrots, tomatoes, and lettuce. The dressing is a creamy honey chickpea blend. I also ordered the Laotian-style chicken meatballs and added them to my salad. Even though, the packaging came with instructions for heating, I assumed the meatballs were deliberately cold! And since I intended them to be eaten with salad, it made perfect sense to me that they were cold. But, one should read the heating instructions. They're there for a reason. LOL. I really liked the sweet & spicy. I thought it was more sweet than spicy so if you don't do spicy, this was just fine. Next up, is the Gormeh chicken. We thought it was a generous portion of rice. The chicken was very tender and soft, almost like it was cooked for a very long time where the meat falls off the bone. It had a lovely sauce and the dish was thoroughly enjoyed.

Yelp
So excited to finally try Foodhini and support some amazing chefs representing cultures from all over the world. One word: amazing. Would order again ima heartbeat. First up: Jeun Mak Pi (Crispy Banana Blossom Bites) with Sweet & Spicy Sauce. The lightly fried bites were reminiscent of a fritter with a ton of perfectly cooked veggies and blossom batter inside. The sauce was served on the side and was a quick pickle of cucumbers and red onions. Even though it was a sauce I ate all of those veggies too. Couldn't let them go to waste! Ingredients: Banana blossom, Tempura mix, Green beans, Kaffir lime leaves, Basil, Red curry paste, Peanuts (on the side), Sugar, Salt, Soy sauce, Oil. Next in line: Chicken & Pumpkin Curry (Gang Gai Sia Mak Eu) with Jasmine Rice. The sauce is coconut forward, and it's a pleasant color orange due to the presence of beautiful chunks of squash. Ingredients: Curry paste, Chicken Breast, Fish sauce, Sugar, Basil leaves, Kabocha pumpkin/squash, Shallots, Garlic, Coconut milk, salt, jasmine rice Last (but not least): Chicken Peanut Butter Stew (Chicken Sauce d'Arachide) with Jasmine Rice. Heavy on the peanut flavor and large, roughly chopped vegetables (mostly carrots and potatoes), light on meat. It reminded me of a rich Winter stew. Ingredients: Potatoes, Chicken, Tomatoes, Red Onions, Jalapeno Peppers, Ground Peanut Butter, Garlic, Carrots, Ginger Powder, Salt, Black Pepper, Bay Leaf, Red Bell Peppers, Green Bell Peppers, Jasmine Rice

Yelp
I love what Foodhini stands for--featuring immigrant and refugee chefs and the beautiful and tasty food that they make! The concept is awesome in that the overhead is kept low so most of your money goes directly to the chef who lovingly prepared your food. It's also an amazing mission in that it supports these chefs through typical challenges that immigrants face when they come to the US--education and employment. I feel inspired reading the stories of the chefs on their website and learning about the challenges they've faced and how they overcame them all to be a chef in the U.S. The thing that stands out to me most is how most of then have had to leave behind a loved one to be here. There are many people right now in this country who are anti-immigrant and anti-refugee who would really benefit from expanding their knowledge by reading these stories. Anyway on to the delicious food! The choices are amazing--Syrian, Ethiopian/Eritrean, Latioan, Iranian, while they're always working to expand to new chefs and cuisines. The chefs share a community kitchen in DC so there is no storefront. The food is delivered to you in microwaveable, ecofriendly containers with specific instructions how to heat it up. And the food is simply amazing. I've had it 4 times now and have thoroughly enjoyed every meal! My favorites are the caramelized chicken and eggs stew, okra curry, lao stir fried noodles, and yam salad. Also--like many businesses in the DMV area, Foodhini offered to assist furloughed families with complementary meals during the 2018-2019 partial government shutdown. It was such a caring and thoughtful effort on their part to help those of us that are struggling. I highly recommend supporting Foodhini--your money so rarely goes to such empowerment when you buy food!

Yelp
I ordered an assortment of dishes and every last one of them was phenomenal. The portions were ample, and the food arrived right on time. Chef Mina wrote me a personal note about the dinner I had ordered, which was a wonderful touch. I particularly loved the Adas Polo (rice with raisins and lentils), Kashke Bademjan (eggplant and walnut dip), and Nam Khao (crispy rice and tofu for lettuce wraps).

Yelp
First of all, why is this food so good! Foodhini will cater my wedding and graduation party! I'm not even engaged! This restaurant has me thinking about my future, truly life changing. Foodhini's message is amazing, creating new opportunities for our immigrants and refugee communities! May God continue to bless this business. Now let's get down to it, the food:A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. My taste buds did cartwheels on the first bite, love At first bite, truly magically. I can't wait to wake up and enjoy my leftovers tomorrow. The chicken perfectly moist, potatoes perfectly crisps and the rice, even the rice was great. I am truly impressed, keep up the great work.

Yelp
I ordered the Lao Mee Aka Ti (Coconut Chicken and Peanut Noodle Soup with Tofu Slices) from Chef Mem and Syrian Chicken Shwarma from Chef Majed. Both were delicious and had generous portion sizes. They came well labeled with a card that told you how to reheat it and eat it properly. The food is reasonably priced (about $10-15 per meal) and I had some leftovers with both. I love the concept of ordering food from immigrant chefs, many of them refugees. I would definitely order again and am looking forward to trying other cuisines! I only gave them 4 stars because my delivery window was from 7:00 - 8:00 pm and my food arrived at 6:00 pm. The time was correctly indicated in my confirmation email and on the bag it came in but was delivered early.

Yelp
Wonderful service with varied, tasty food. Food is delivered in a timely fashion. It is also a way to contribute to our immigrant community. Highly recommend them. I tasted the Afghan offerings and look forward to sampling other cuisines.

Yelp
Foodhini is amazing. I have the Taste subscription, so I get sent a selected set of two-three meals weekly (unless I choose to opt out). This also gives me access to newer dishes that Foodhini is trying out. I truly haven't had something bad from here (though I do have my top top favorites, like the chicken and pumpkin curry, which is honestly the best curry I've ever had in my life). I also appreciate that everyone is paid a living wage, and the set up of the business gives immigrants (so far, all women!) the opportunity to start being chefs without a large infusion of upfront cash. Foodhini is one of those businesses that provides a great product but also feels great to support. Looking forward to more delicious Foodhini meals in my future!

Yelp
Had this when my office had ordered catering. I had the Persian Adis Polo dish--the label did not state that it was not vegan and had butter in it. I was sick afterwards since I have been vegan for a very long time. Aside from that, it was very heavy/oily and had no other flavor. Pretty much the same with the glass noodle dish. The tomato sauce that went with the beef dish had a layer three fingers deep of oil on it. I very much am behind the premise of this company, but you need better chefs.

Yelp
I'm an SF transplant in DC, so my food expectations are incredibly high (shout out to Puerto Allegre #2 in the Mission). Foodhini surprised me. I've never tried Laos food, but I love it! I've traveled to Cambodia, so I know a thing or two about South East Asian food (not really, I just know I like Cambodian and Vietnamese dishes). Laos food is different. It had this unbelievable use of fresh herbs and meats. Nothing was too heavy. Nothing lacked flavor. I had the lettuce wraps, sticky rice and papaya salad. It was off the chain! Apparently this is a startup and there are new chefs coming soon. I'll say I'm coming back to check this out again. Highly recommend it.

Yelp
Very impressed! Ordered a meal in advance for home delivery, and the food arrived as ordered and within the given time frame. Ordered a few Syrian dishes from chef Majed and found the food delicious. The Okra dish was spectacular and the hummus delicious as well- was similar in style to the kind found abroad. Shish Taouk was good. Portions were good for the price. It's a few dollars more than we'd typically spend on a weeknight dinner but no more expensive than other local delivery options. Give it a try!

Yelp
Foodhini is great. A few reasons why - -new foods I've never tried (never had Lao food before) -very tasty -streamlined service and order process (always on time, packaged well) -great portion size (leftovers for next two days) -great mission (empowering immigrant chefs) -Love (Chef writes me a personalized note!) I get Foodhini every week!

Yelp
We ordered our individual dishes from Foodhini for a team lunch. Each person paid $10-$15 and the menu accommodated vegetarians as well. It's really heartwarming since the chefs are refugees - each meal comes with a postcard that gives a story about the chef that cooked your dish. Most of the food came with instructions on how to eat it and if we should it room temperature or warm it up. They don't deliver outside the D.C. area and there's a minimum delivery fee during lunch ($100 I think). We scheduled the delivery and they were on time. The food was really good and everyone enjoyed trying something they had never tried before.

Rachel K.

Yelp
I've never had anything bad from Foodhini. I think my favorite item is the vegetarian pumpkin curry but everything's great, and I love knowing that I'm supporting immigrant & refugee chefs. You do have to plan ahead a little by ordering the day before (or by 2pm same-day if you live close) but it's worth it. As other reviewers have said they are really timely with delivery, too!

Meagan B.

Yelp
Delicious and great mission. Diverse and fresh cuisine. I have had their delivery and their catering for a large corporate event. My friend even had them cater her wedding! The flavors are great and if you get the weekly meal it is a wonderful surprise and you can break out of your pad Thai rut, with amazing food from all corners of the world!

Yelp
Delicious food with an amazing philosophy supporting women and providing opportunities to thrive. Great variety of food and great customer service. Kudos to the team and owner.

Yelp
There's a lot going for Foodhini and my only regret is not knowing about it sooner. Being able to order from different ethnic cuisines from one place is my takeout dream. Supporting the chefs who make them and who might not otherwise be able to showcase their talent makes this an even better cause for adding Foodhini to our takeout rotation. Our dinner started with the Afghan Vegetarian Dumplings. The dumplings were fine but the addition of the yogurt sauce on top gave it the flavor boost it needed. Our main entrees were the Afghan Chicken Gormeh and the Ivorian Pepper Steak. The Chicken Gormeh was overall good but lacked intensity in flavor - a good dish if you have kids who don't want anything too crazy but I'd love to see this dish amped up a little more. The Pepper Steak was delicious. Although there was a lot of oil, it didn't taste greasy as long as you mixed it all in. It could use less oil but a definite go-to dish. We ended with the Eritrean donuts. I love anything with cardamom and I could taste a hint of that with each bite. This is by no means as light as a donut and is more like fried dough. All the dishes came in eco-friendly (bottom) containers (tops are plastic) in which you can reheat your meal. I have no problem with the delivery fee as this money supports the staff at Foodhini. We look forward to more takeout from Foodhini and to seeing it thrive and grow.

Yelp
We ordered Foodhini after hearing about their mission to help local refugees find sustainable jobs. We saw it as a practical way to help. As a bonus for us, the food was absolutely wonderful. We ordered on a day where Chef Ghosoun was preparing Syrian food. A meal for two costs $39, and you have the option to choose 3 dishes from the 5 being prepared. The price point felt a little high, but we weren't ordering just for the food, we were ordering to support the mission. We chose the Syrian salad, Falafel with Laban, and Mandi (chicken over rice and almonds). When the food arrived, I was worried it wouldn't quite be enough for my wife and I, but I was wrong. We had leftovers! There was a hand-written note from the Chef personalized to us, heating instructions (which took just a couple of minutes), and a little bit of information about the chef. The Syrian salad was what you'd expect from a normal salad with a lemon vinaigrette. I wasn't sure if I'd like the falafel, but they were wonderful, and they came with pita, laban, lemon slices, and a variety of vegetables to add. That alone could have fed us enough for dinner. The Mandi was heavily seasoned with a variety of middle eastern spices, and the almonds in the rice gave it a crunchy texture that I rather enjoyed. We can't wait to try it again!

Melissa L.

Yelp
Wow! I'm so glad eating such good and reasonably priced food helps people on their way to establishing themselves in DC's foodie scene as they settle into this country. And they deliver right on time. I will be ordering again soon. We have not tried nearly as many things as look delicious, but we had a few Iranian dishes from Mina that were awesome (the herb/bean stew and the lentils). We wish these chefs much success!

Narges M.

Yelp
Ordered food from Foodhini for World Refugee Day and it was amazing. The food was delicious and Chris did an amazing job of setting up the buffet. Chris was very patient, very helpful and a very friendly person to interact with. We had an amazing time. Definitely 100% recommend ordering from Foodhini

Steph K.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food and wonderful mission! I am working full time in DC and going to evening grad school and Foodhini has been a lifesaver for nights I don't have time to cook. The Founder frequently drops off the deliveries himself - which is so refreshing to see. I struggled with deciding to go with other food delivery services because they lacked variety or complexity (I don't want to eat something I can easily cook myself) and Foodhini is totally original and keeps you on your toes! I am a happy "taste the world" subscriber. Their chefs write handwritten notes to you and really believe in their food :) Also, where else can you easily access Laotian or Syrian food in DC?
google avatar

Gloria L.

Yelp
We have had Foodhini three times now. Delivery has been prompt and the food has been excellent. Both Syrian options have been fantastic and we had Laotian last night. The tilapia lettuce wraps were amazing. Prefect for an easy summer dinner.

Geneva P.

Yelp
So good! I ordered Filipino short ribs and Laotian lamb patties. Both were delicious and came with fresh veggies, sauces, and sticky rice. My food was delivered within the time period I requested. Will be a regular customer for sure...

Isa M.

Yelp
1st takeout yesterday and it exceeded our expectations: we got some dishes by Chef Majed, (okra, chicken with potatoes, baba ghannoush). They were all delicious, especially the okra which was on another level. Can't wait to order again and try more dishes. I had the food delivered to my office in DC and took it home, but hopefully there will be delivery to Arlington soon. Great cause and excellent service, thank you!

Sean M.

Yelp
We've just finished a terrific meal of Shish Tawook and Falafel and sides of Mutabbal and Hummus. The food was amazing and authentic, and I like all the wins here: we get to eat well, and I feel it sends just a bit of a signal of support for the Syrian people, of whom the two chefs here in DC, Majed and Ghusoun, are clearly excellent culinary representatives. I liked the portions and the sense of having eaten a home-cooked meal in our home that we couldn't possibly have reproduced ourselves. I wish them every success and hope Muhammara and Hummus bal-Lahmeh make it on the menu soon!

Chris F.

Yelp
Incredible food, and the constantly rotating menu means that there is always a great new dish to try!!!

Mary V.

Yelp
I ordered the first time after reading about the company and their mission. I reorder again and again for the fantastic food and service. Usually at least every other week. I haven't tried every dish, but I have tried every chef and all are great. I'd never had Lao or Syrian food before but now I'm a fan of both. And I had to order twice this week due to the limited edition Tibetan dishes. While I'll miss the ginger lamb when chef Dorjee leaves there's always chef Majed's chicken swarma and two new dishes I've been planning to try.

Caroline M.

Yelp
Our meal from Foodhini was amazing! We had the ful, the vegetarian moussaka, and the shish taouk. I am smitten with the ful, the moussaka was truly delicious, and my boyfriend thought his chicken was some of the best he's had. There was enough left over for me to have leftovers the next day, so we really got three meals out of the one order. I can't recommend the food enough!

Melissa S.

Yelp
While the flavors were great... having to microwave overcooked the meal. I am not a fan of microwaved meals and I'm sure if it were served hot it could have been very tasty.
