The 8 Best Coffee Shops In DC

"There is no better coffee shop to work in than For Five Coffee Roasters. While we come to the downtown cafe just for the strong, creamy espresso and the artisanal BEC (its stuffed with caramelized bacon bits, scrambled eggs, avocado, and a tangy aioli, all on a flaky croissant), the best part is that it’s  open from 7am-7pm. It’s set up for laptop warriors to plug in and tune out– most of the tables wrap around the edges of the cafe and have enough space for one or two people to sprawl out and get busy (and there are outlets under each table). There’s also a patio, if you want to get some fresh air between Zoom calls." - tristiana hinton

Went out for a walk and happen to pass by this place, the atmosphere just told me to go in a have a coffee! Vibes were great and the two people working there were so nice !! I ordered an iced vanilla latte and it was DELICIOUS! Not overly sweet nor bitter, you could tell it was good quality coffee. Also, the space was super clean and had lots of seating options for anyone coming in, whether it was for work or to sit with some friends. Will definitely be coming back !

Google
This was THE CUTEST cafe- the aesthetics and decor were gorgeous! I’d totally love to hang out here and work, but the prices were super high. I spent $15 for a chai latte and a cookie. The cookie was awesome, the tea was way more airy than I was expecting and kind of felt like I was drinking a cloud, which could have been nice except it was so airy and frothy it kind of felt like nothing… and $7 is a lot to pay to drink nothing. In sum, I’d come back for their cookies and stick around to enjoy the space, but skip the chai.

Google
Well, I will keep this short. I came in for an Espresso Martini and when the price came up to $21.00 (top shelf vodka without asking), I was shocked. I mean, the cocktail was not very good and it was extremely overpriced. The atmosphere is cute, but it doesn’t outweigh how pricey this place is.

Google
Been here twice now but this time the head chef came out and presented our small brunch with a lot of genuine pride I felt I should write a review. Food has been incredible and the service was also top tier. Clean and modern atmosphere. Would recommend to anyone!

As a person who LOVE coffee , I have a very hard to satisfy taste in coffee quality I like it - very quite - very neat I am looking forward to try more products I tried the cinnamon roles and it was good ! With reasonable sugar ! The double espresso is good Americano is good Would back again for sure

I decided to stop pass to check it out…not a bad experience. The Environment is clean and welcoming, the staff are super professional, and understanding of the menu. I ordered the overnight oatmeal and the Macadamia lavender iced latte. It was really good with the strawberry syrup added . I will recommend this place and I want to try their coffee next time :-).

Google
Had the weirdest experience. I have been to this location several times and enjoyed the coffee and pastries. This time I ordered the coffee which was quite a bit more than the Starbucks across the street. Anyway, I remember paying about $8. Found out that more like $14 for a pastry I never ordered had been put on my card. I did not ask for a receipt-a mistake I will not make again. I disputed the charge a few days later. The price of coffee alone is a put off. I don't think I will ever return.

Google
Be careful guys, the price is not as listed on the wall. Instead they put a tiny sign right next to the counter as their “new price.” The food is great, but way too expensive. The matcha latte is ridiculously expensive. The price on the wall for a large cup is 5.25, but the “new price” is 9.12 after tax. Everything is 3 to 4 dollars more compares to the ones on menu. Even thought the food is good, I will never come again as this company is not even respect their customers by putting up the corrected pricing.

Yelp
Incredible. I got invited to breakfast with a friend and I'll be honest, I never heard of For Five coffee before. I'm glad I went! There's lots of seats, and even some at the counter area. People were working on their laptops while enjoying their food. The service was quick and we were offered some additional in-sight regarding the menu. Berry French Toast Coffee | Raspberry Tea | Ice Coffee Full pastry bar with lots to choose from Breakfast sandwich - would never have tried it and it was my favorite thing we ordered Seating area, plenty of room Raspberry tea 10/10 give me 5 more Cinnabon, delicious Steak and eggs - definitely 5 stars Parking is streetside with ParkMobile meters available and also a district parking meter machine. There's also a parking garage if you do not want to run the risk of having a $50-$100 ticket. I was able to park right up front with no issues. Loved the place and will definitely return!

Yelp
I was super disappointed with For Five coffee. I came in here around opening, i walked in and said "hello!" The barista did not even care to look up. I stood there for about 3 minutes without being helped while this barista stood there. Then another guy came in and stood behind us in line. After about a minute or two of both of us standing there, she goes "I'm waiting for you to come up and order", I think we were all stunned! We get a large matcha and a latte. Total was 25 dollars?!?! (I have a receipt if you do not believe me) What!!! I was expecting some strong coffee and matcha, instead I got watered down, mostly almost milk beverages. Not to add loud rock music playing almost the entire time. To add on, their wifi is awful. Probably the worst coffee shops I've attended, and I have been to hundreds around the globe. Skip this one when you are in DC.

Yelp
First time at this particular location, been to another location that I wasn't super impressed with. I stopped by because I was in the area and wanted a warm beverage while I took a few minutes to sit and relax. The inside of the shop was pretty big with nice seating. I ordered a "large" hot matcha latte with almond milk. The large was 16 oz and there was a surcharge of $0.95 for the almond milk! My drink cost just over $9, I found this expensive. Their matcha latte was kind of a let down. Matcha was not particularly good or bad, and the foam was disappointing. It was overall kind of basic for what I thought I paid. Sometimes the matcha lattes from other places will have a subtle sweetness from adding a touch of honey or something or even from the milk or alternative milk in this case. Not sure I would come here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Atmosphere is absolutely perfect--nice bar top and or comfortable table settings to do work or catch up. Very open and aesthetically beautiful. If you're going for coffee drinks, I would pass as I found it to be very underwhelming and disappointing. Everything tasted very weak and bland. I ordered a matcha iced latte and felt super disappointed. My boyfriend got their coffee latte and felt the exact same. I ordered their spinach pastry and while the pastry itself had a very nice flaky crust, the filling itself didn't leave me craving for a second bite. My boyfriend ordered one of their s'mores cookie and thought it was ok. Overall, I wouldn't come back as the pastries, cookies, and coffee was a huge miss.

Yelp
This coffee shop was across the street from the embassy suites I stayed in. On check out day I decided to give them a try. HUGE mistake! I opted for a small matcha latte with oat milk. It took maybe 5 minutes for it to be prepared. I knew immediately that it was all wrong! It came out steaming hot! If you don't know anything about matcha please know that you don't utilize boiling hot water to prepare it! Boiling water burns matcha powder! The entire flavor profile is ruined when it is made with boiling water. The consistency of the drink was also all wrong. It was really thick and gritty. The drink cost me nearly $8. I had to first let it cool and then I attempted to drink it since I did pay for it. I can't speak to the quality of the coffee drinks or food, but for matcha- it's a no!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
They told me that .. this is one of the best coffee place in DC after the first sip I said yes! Ambiance is very clear and it's a good spot for business meeting.. complmentry cookies was good too

Yelp
I came here to do some work for a little bit, and was pleasantly surprised by the service and the food. Luckily, I went on a day when they weren't busy at all and also it was closer to closing time. I was looking for a vegan pastry and some coffee originally, but after asking the guy at the front, I found out they don't have any vegan pastries. He offered me their vegan chicken salad sandwich & I was surprised on the portion size. It's a pretty big sandwich, I ended up having to take half home. I'd give it a solid 6/10 , it needed to be seasoned more and the bread needed to be crunchier to offset the texture of the chicken salad. The employees were very kind and went above and beyond to make sure to cater to my dairy allergy which was very sweet. The overall ambiance of the cafe gives your typical cafe, the coffee is pretty good. Would definitely come here again.
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
Fairly standard cafe. Wasn't wow-ed with the drink (chai with a shot of espresso) as it tasted a bit watered down, but my sandwich was good and croissant was crispy. There's plenty of space inside and outside to enjoy your treat. And the workers are speedy, so it doesn't take long to get your items!

Yelp
Any city we're in I try to go to new coffee places and steer clear of the green siren. While in DC we went to @forfive daily for coffee and they have fantastic breakfast and lunch options as well. We were actually at the 901 K street location but that one didn't come up on Yelp for me to review so I'm leaving it on this one. There's lots of businesses around and we were there for the AWS conference at the convention center, so that one was really busy with other conference attendees and assuming there regulars who work in the area. They did a great job of handling how busy it was and we looked forward to our easy access to coffee and breakfast before a long day. My husband got the peach French toast with thick slices of brioche bread with soft and warm peach slices. The croissant was soft and flaky yet crispy and sweet. Filled with lots of scrambled eggs with cheese and thick cut maple bacon with a bit of spice. of course we had coffee every single day, and they have a buy 8 cup get 1 free program. I really enjoyed their iced latte and added caramel per my usual every time. Their coffee is strong, but taste great. Overall, I look forward to them having a location in Orlando one day!
google avatar

Clare O.

Yelp
I had a work meeting here this morning and somehow had never been. I got a caramel cold brew and it was shockingly good. I think they ruined me for coffee, it was stop you in your tracks good. The barista was super sweet and fast too. 10/10 recommend, also want to come back to try their delicious looking cookies.
google avatar

Serena X.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by how nice the inside was for working, and how delicious my oat milk latte was! Don't forgot to ask for a loyalty card as well - I honestly love when places still have a physical card!

David B.

Yelp
I stumbled to this place and it looked nice. I had the raspberry iced tea and the Bacon Egg + Cheese croissant sandwich. Both were amazingly good: Tasty, nice croissant, arrived nice and hot. For a brief moment, I thought I could pick up the whole sandwich and nibble. Oh no, it was so larges I had to cut it in half. Yes, I liked the place, the food, and the people.
google avatar

Whitney H.

Yelp
The food is so fresh and so tasty. It is not too salty which I appreciate. The environment is welcoming and relaxing. There is a cute little patio in front that you can study on. Highly recommend coming here!

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Coffee is okay. The customer service was horrible. The guys acted like we were an inconvenience for ordering anything and like we were interrupting their conversation. I asked where the lids were and I just got a side eye.
google avatar

Yelp
I was very disappointed by my experience at For Five today. I am generally a fan of For Five, and I think their coffee is a bit better than the other speciality coffee shops. However, I ordered a small chai latte today, which you can see from the large print board is labeled to cost $5.25, but it rang up at $6.70. When I asked the barista, he said "oh the prices are not updated on the board, I'm sorry miss" and then pointed to a small sheet of paper with the updated prices. This is a big price difference, and customers should be informed about the prices. They need to update their board asap. Also, for a chai and a cup of 24hr oats I paid over $22. I get that this is a luxury coffee shop, but the prices are extremely inflated. I will be rethinking coming here when I am planning to treat myself. I just do not know if it is worth it.
google avatar

Varun S.

Yelp
Great place to work and grab a bite. A bit pricey but I believe that's every place in DC. Wish they made their syrups in-house.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Great coffee shop with baristas who know their stuff. Very good pastries, sandwiches, yogurt and a plethora of cookies. Prices are DC reasonable. Indoor banco seating and outdoor tables. Perfect place to grab something on your way to work or hit up during a cafe break.
google avatar

Yelp
Came on a Saturday morning with a friend and was pleasantly surprised! For Five is not just a coffee shop but offers a wide variety of food for breakfast and lunch more on par with what you'd find at a restaurant. I had the peach french toast and it was delightful! Had a matcha latte to drink which was also fabulous. Cute little spot. Perfect to come sit and work or read or have a catch up with a friend or coworker. Sat here with a friend for a couple hours and it was perfect. They have a fair amount of chairs outside for a nice day. Service was quick and efficient and friendly. The only downside is the portions are quite small and it's expensive. I paid about $30 for a drink and French toast but enjoyed it nonetheless. Will be back!
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
My food and coffee were excellent. The line was long but the service was quick and efficient.
google avatar

Doreen L.

Yelp
For Five is a coffee, brunch spot chain. I've visited the one in Astoria, NYC and that focused on baked goods and coffee. This For Five serves coffee, baked goods and a decent brunch/lunch location. We were in DC for a wedding and For Five hit the spot. Healthy salads, a perfect matcha latte and the acai bowl was delicious. I'm excited to return if I'm ever in the area.
google avatar

Kristin V.

Yelp
This coffee shop was just a couple of doors down from our hotel. We visited there every morning during our visit to DC. The coffee was good and the food was delicious. I tried their oatmeal, two different breakfast sandwiches along with a chocolate scone. All were very good. The coffee shop vibe was modern yet warm filled with students from George Washington University and staff from nearby embassies. It was a great way to start our morning's in DC!
google avatar

Shelby G.

Yelp
This was my first time at For Five , I enjoyed my hot chocolate and the cinnamon bun I would definitely recommend. The store was really clean and the workers were really kind. I enjoyed reading about the owners of the store and their story. We heard about how good the cookies are and went back the next day to buy some before we left D.C . I got the cookie and cream and I would 100% get it again, it had amazing taste and the cream filling topped it off. :)

Yelp
I wanted to love this place after seeing all the photos online. The interior is nice and it is in a prime location. I stopped by as soon as they opened to try the matcha before I was flying out. they sell baked goods and other cafe food items. Being so early, they were not busy. I saw a photo of the iced lavender macadamia matcha latte and was intrigued. I asked the cashier if this was the same price as the matcha latte on the menu. He said yes so, I placed my order. He took a very long time to make the drink. I nervously watched my time hoping to check out soon and get to the airport. Finally, it was done and to my surprise it was not the same price. Instead of $5.25 this came to $8.21. It looked nothing like the photo of the drink and tasted a bit watery. For that price I'd expect an amazing drink. What's worse is he mentioned the price was the same. If I knew it would take this long and cost more, I probably wouldn't have ordered it. I wanted to love this place, but this drink was not it.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
space is very nice, lots of seating inside and out, overall looks like it should be good - but it's very average coffee, both espresso and drip.
google avatar

Raquel M.

Yelp
I will save you some money and from pretty rude service and just do not come here. It's very unfortunate that our baristas did not care at all and even gave us attitudes when asking basic questions. The interior of the coffee was awesome & super classy. Wish the people were up to those standards. Coffee: my mom's drip coffee was actually cold. The barista then proceeded to tell us they had not even brewed a fresh batch, so we asked them to make a fresh new batch. He proceeded to ignore us. My latte was missing any sort of flavor, so I'm sure it wasn't vanilla. Pancakes: I'm disappointed. They were not warm. Had such high hopes. (Super expensive). Anyways, hope this helps!
google avatar

Vivian H.

Yelp
I think the cafe is great, with big windows and tables to work from, but I do agree that the prices are a bit steep. They do offer food like brunch style and even pasta. I stick to coffee when working here!
google avatar

Bari D.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh. Down one star due to price. Breakfast for 2 was $72! That was for coffee, yogurt bowl, sandwich, cookie, croissant.
google avatar

Rodger S.

Yelp
Great cinnamon roll! Decaf cappuccino! Lovely setting for reading! I'm so thrilled that I found For Five Coffee Roasters, totally by chance. I'll be back soon to try more pastries, including the cookies & chocolate cake.

T J.

Yelp
Dishonest pricing. I ordered a large cold brew which is $5.25 on the menu posted. The total came out to $6.84. I looked at the receipt and I got charged $6 for the coffee itself, a 4% fee which is not posted anywhere as required by law, plus the usual tax. One star for deceptive business practices.
google avatar

Carlton M.

Yelp
Very good spot. Coffee was good. I had black coffee and a chocolate croissant. Service was good. Good ambiance. No bathroom inside. Good overall. Id come back.
google avatar

Alesia S.

Yelp
Visited for the first time after winning an Instagram contest. My friend and I went in for lunch today. Started with 2 iced chai lattes. Then we order the chicken pesto and Mexican birria sandwiches to share. We finished off the meal with two cookies. Everything was great and the portions were huge. The barista took great care of us and he was very helpful. I will definitely be returning to try their breakfast.

John B.

Yelp
A wonderful place with a welcoming staff. this is just what the neighborhood needs. The coffee prices are comparable to Starbucks but you get a lovely environment in which to enjoy your coffee (and meal if you so desire) and a staff that makes the experience warm and friendly.
google avatar

Lita G.

Yelp
Came here because of the good reviews and this place was a total flop. First, it wasn't so busy, but the girl taking orders was still very distracted, which wouldn't be a problem if the stuff I got had been good. I ordered the ham and cheese croissant since it was the only savory option, and they wouldn't warm it up, so it was kinda stale and super cold. Also ordered a mocha, beware because they only have a small cup size, and the mocha is almost $6. Total check was over $13 before tipping. The mocha was blah, not a very strong flavor and zero sugar, maybe some sweetness would have helped enhance the flavors. Anyway, overpriced, cold pastries, bland coffee.
google avatar

Otniel L.

Yelp
Stopped in to this coffee shop for a matcha latte and a quick snack. Matcha latte has a really strong flavor...maybe less matcha powder/more dilution would be better. It did taste like some good quality matcha, but too strong for my liking. I also had a wrapped cookie near the register that was blah, lol. This spot looked like it had many fresh pastries - my girl asked for the packaged instead of fresh, so you know how that goes. A lot of folks were there enjoying some drinks and studying/working. The staff were nice, efficient and pleasant. Give it a try! -ODL

Amy W.

Yelp
Ordered online so I didn't have to wait and wouldn't be late; got here --no order and no refund available "they don't do refunds" management said. I had a choice to wait and be really late and get my food ($80 worth) or walk out with nothing. I ordered early because I know how long it takes to get food here. Thanks for the AWFUL customer service.

Fong H.

Yelp
First off, the coffee is good. However, I ordered coffee beans online end of August 2024 and received the wrong coffee bag. I emailed them about the wrong order and they told me a replacement would be sent right away. It has been over 1.5 months and still no coffee replacement. I have emailed them again twice and no reply. There is no telephone number to call and speak with someone. I won't be ordering any more coffee. I really enjoyed their coffee, but this service is unacceptable.
google avatar

Shweta S.

Yelp
Decent cappuccino but probably one of the worst almond croissants I have had. Its located in downtown DC so you bet it will cost you an arm and a leg. Cute ambience though!
google avatar

Sabrina P.

Yelp
I agree with the other reviews that this place is a bit pricy BUT the customer service is excellent! I went twice so far about a week apart and both times the service was great. The cashier did a great job explaining the menu and remaining very pleasant although a crowd started to form the second time I went (gets packed early afternoon). The chocolate chip cookie was good but a bit more on the hard cookie side (this could've been because I was in a rush so couldn't get it warmed up). Overall the study lounge atmosphere and great coffee is a great break from the office.
google avatar

Joshua K.

Yelp
Extremely expensive but delicious. I went here on a recent weekday morning and got the chocolate chunk cookie and the chocolate chip scone. Combined, I paid almost $15 for them. As good as they were, even for downtown DC the cost is outrageous. The chocolate chunk cookie was rich and fudgy, but should have been bigger for the cost. The chocolate chip scone was incredible-rich, buttery, perfectly sweet with the right amount of chocolate chips. The rest of the menu is just as expensive ($21 for huevos rancheros). I would come to For Five for a special occasion but this would not be a place where I could be a regular due to the cost.
google avatar

Chris Z.

Yelp
Stopped in for a coffee while on vacay in DC. Energy is nice, I like the vibe inside. Was greeted by a very nice barista. It's my first time trying the place and so it took me a bit longer then it would at, say, Starbucks. But she was patient and pleasant. The coffee (and the chocolate chip cookie I definitely shouldn't have had for breakfast) were both delicious. Only ding is the price, it's pretty high. But not enough to dissuade me from coming back!
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Such a unique find! My friend dropped by to do some work, and got me a croissant on the way back. The croissant itself was nice and yummy! On the downside, I feel like it may look a little better than how it actually tasted, but overall was very yummy and was great.

Lauren H.

Yelp
The best latte I have had in my life!!! Macadamia nut milk and NOTHING added and it was amazing, I will be dreaming about it. Breakfast was also delicious and fresh. It was slightly over priced in my opinion but honestly a great seating area and I would to again so I'm willing to pay the price for the wonderful service and food.
google avatar

Aviva M.

Yelp
Went here for breakfast on a Saturday morning, had a great time 8/10 - the açaí bowl was delicious and so pretty, the only thing was the white chocolate was super hard (basically indestructible lol) 9/10 - the chocolate chip cookie was amazing, levain style 10/10 - great tea/coffee - the man serving us was really mad for some reason? Which is why I took off a star
google avatar

Kembral N.

Yelp
This coffee shop was accidental find and I'm glad we did! Ordered a Gotham Mocha with Lavender flavoring and Nitro Cold Brew. Also ordered a croissant and banana nut bread. Ambience: clean, spacious, indoor and outdoor seating. Chill Background music plays. It's a place you can bring your laptop to to work or just chat with friends. Service: extremely welcoming and upbeat service. Quality: the coffee what the best we've had so far in DC! Not watered down, super flavorful, bold coffee. The pastries were delicious and fresh. Covid precautions: Mask Fun facts: this coffee shop also serves several types of teas..and if you don't like whole milk, no worries, they have about 5 whole milk alternatives. They also have gluten free and vegan menu options! Price: Reasonable.
google avatar

Travis W.

Yelp
It's in a convenient location for those working downtown, but the convenience may or may not be worth the quality. I found the iced vanilla latte way to sweet, but sometimes you just need caffeine and it doesn't matter where. Other than that the other times I've visited the lattes have been good enough and Isabel goes enough to get a free coffee from the punch card! Travis' Rating Taste - 2 Quality - 2 Ambiance - 2 Overall - 2 Isabel's Rating Taste - 3 Quality - 2 Ambiance - 2 Overall - 3
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
For Five's always solid. I recently visited their DC location to try some of their new menu offerings and ended up getting the following three dishes: smoked salmon toast, vanilla creme brulee french toast and spicy vodka rigatoni. All 3 were priced around $20-21, and portions were quite generous. My favorite out of the bunch was the pasta - the sauce had a really nice kick to it, and the noodles were cooked beautifully. The salmon was a close second, and I loved that they topped this tartine with salmon roe and chili oil. As much as I wanted to love the french toast, it was a little too sweet for me - I can definitely see others liking this combo though. All in all, great experience. Service was prompt and everyone there was super nice!

Raymita B.

Yelp
I'm leaving this here because the Yelp profile for the new K St location isn't up yet. However, this is an issue plaguing all For Fives. They lie to you about pricing! We got a small iced chai which according to the board should cost $5.75. However, we were charged nearly $3 more. Why? Because it was iced. Yes, that is correct. Iced drinks cost $2-3 more. The staff said the board is only for hot drinks but failed to mention this. It also doesn't say so anywhere on the menu. This place is a scam. Don't come here.
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
I absolutely loved my matcha latte here. The decor and ambiance in For Five is also perfect and so relaxing. It is rare that coffee shops have authentic matcha that tastes like ceremonial grade. This is definitely a place I am going to bookmark and keep coming back to! The cookies look SO good as well! I can't wait to try those in the future.
google avatar

Gene S.

Yelp
i normally have fine experiences here, but i wanted to get something special for a friend's birthday so i bought some of the "fresh baked" cookies. sadly, they were like giant hockey pucks...dry, flavorless, and very expensive hockey pucks. we picked at a few before finally chucking them in the garbage. it was pretty embarrassing tbh.
