"At Fornax in Roslindale, bread is the star. Kim and Chris Fallon opened Fornax — named after the Roman goddess of baking — in 1997, and have been providing their community with high-quality breads and pastry ever since. A few menu highlights include the English muffins, or any of their loaves such as the sfilatino or rye. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, be sure to try the unbeatable salami and onion, which can be ordered on your choice of their house-made breads. Catch them at the Roslindale Farmers’ Market or at one of their many restaurant wholesale partners like Sophia’s Grotto in Roslindale or Antonio’s Bacari in Hyde Park." - Katie Draisen

"Since 1997, this Roslindale bakery has been highlighting European-style breads, particularly slow-fermented boules but also a variety of Italian white breads, French baguettes, pumpernickel loaves, and lots more. In addition to selling bread at its storefront — where customers can also get sandwiches, soups, and salads — Fornax distributes to various area restaurants, cafes, and stores, including Allandale Farm in Brookline and City Feed & Supply’s two Jamaica Plain stores." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

They’re priced between $16 and $30, depending on size and type. Consult the menu and order by phone or email by the end of the day on December 18; a 50% deposit will be required. Bread is fresh every day. Their sandwich and soup combo are amazing. The manager, staff, and service are exceptional and very accommodating! The price is very reasonable for the big portions you get. They got a beautiful outdoor patio, too!

Awesome bakery with very reasonable prices. Ordered a cake and have been buying sourdough bread for a few weeks. They have a great selection of pastries, bread, and sandwiches as well. Highly recommended

Had and cheese croissant… where’s the ham .. that’s borderline disrespectful. Even if you didn’t use a whole slice of ham .. at least half l. Looks like they took a slice and made 5 croissants with it.. and this $4.42… after the fact that the new kids don’t know to not handle money with the gloves they’re touching bread with and this .. I umay had to be done with them

Rough. Was so excited. Just needed bread to make garlic bread with pasta… At the cash register I decided to treat myself to a chocolate chip cookie. It was terrible. Dry. Hard. Cashier said - oh, those were baked on Sunday - it was now Wednesday. I asked for a different cookie. I thought I’d try an oatmeal raisin. Cashier said - oh, people don’t like those. Ugh. I ended up with a giant Oreo. It was meh. Got a batard for garlic bread… I’d give it a 7 out of 10? It was a day old too, as per my cashier… So, not fresh. Not good.

I stopped by here during my morning walk, and it was awesome! Can tell everything is made fresh. Highly recommend!

Bought a whole of bread and was dry, i am pretty sure was old. I threw half of it away. Came back to give another try and bought chocolate cake. Also dry. Didnt offer to warm it either.

Both of the cashiers at the counter were very nice and pleasant! I ordered a portabello sandwich to go, and upon further inspection of the menu after I placed my Order, realized this consisted of spinach, peppers and mushrooms between bread with no cheese or anything else….so veggies and bread…I waited for about 20 mins for the sandwich and only two other customer walked in and placed an order during this time so I’m unsure why it took so long (they also got their sandwiches before me?) The sandwich itself was bland, the bread was floppy and covered in butter. I took the Sandwich home, put cheese on it and threw it in a pan in order to crisp up the bread, like it should have been done in the bakery….I spent 15 dollars on this “sandwich” and a medium coffee. I am not going to go back.

Yelp
Really nice bread place in Roslindale. Has a variety of type of breads. The challah is top notch, nicely braided, with a good chewy texture. The ham and cheese croissant was decent, though some of the layers of croissant were more dense than I had anticipated. The baguette was rather unique - a bit denser than usual but enjoying the outer crust.

Yelp
Came here for the first time today and was very impressed. I initially came in for cupcakes for myself but wanted to try other things if they looked appealing. I was greeted once I came In by a very nice young woman who was super helpful as a first timer. She was gracious and happy to help me, such a true rarity in Boston these days. I liked the cupcakes, but I actually think the homemade Oreo cookie and the banana bread were the strength for me. Lovely! I wish I got more banana bread when I was there!!!!

Yelp
Under new leadership and ownership, this bakery is really shining! All the same classic recipes and menu, but the place has been seriously cleaned up. Can't wait to go back. The bread and sandwiches are delicious! Sandwiches used to take forever to come out, but now they're prompt and still just as delicious!

Yelp
Delicious, homey baked treats. Food I've tried: - WALNUT CURRANT SCONE ($2.95): very nice and crumbly scone - simple, yet delicious. - BUTTERMILK BISCUIT ($4.50): this is a crumbly biscuit, with a bit more springiness in the dough than the scone. Initially I thought that the dough was a tad too salty, but the more I ate, the more the salt paired well with the butter. - For the price, both pastries were generously portioned, especially the scone. They have rotating scone flavors throughout the week. I was also sad to find that at times my two favorite pastries (scones and biscuits) were sold out by the end of the day when I visited. Atmosphere: - Small amount of seating inside, around 3 tables. It is definitely a take out place rather than a dine in location. Decor is very homey. Service: - The staff are friendly. Overall: - Great bakery, with delicious bread for a reasonable price.

Yelp
FOOD: Subpar. The ingredients are listed in such a way that you would anticipate an artisan sandwich, but really all you're getting is average toppings and a blob of melted cheese over pretty good bread. PRICE: Uncomfortably overpriced. The menu cites an $11.00 full sandwich, but somehow I ended up paying $40.00 for two. I wasn't offered a receipt and I was so aggravated by my experience at that point that I just left the counter, but I have no idea how or for what I was charged. I made one addition to one sandwich and somehow that doubled the price of my entire order. What a joke. SERVICE: Really odd vibes. The staff was not friendly, nor were they attentive or helpful. I stood in line while one cashier looked at me strangely but didn't say anything to me. She then looked past me at another customer I assume she'd been helping before I came in. OK, no problem. A little weird that she decided not to communicate that but I stepped aside so she could assist the other customer. Then, the other staff member walked past me to the person in line after me and took her order. I just stood there waiting patiently. I have no idea why that person did not want to serve me. She just left the counter after taking that order and the first cashier was finally ready to take mine. The was ready soon enough, maybe 10 minutes. So that's a plus? If you're sitting outside, you just have to check in inside periodically. AMBIANCE: Well, needless to say the vibe was off given the horribly dismissive service. Sitting inside wasn't an option for us: we did not want to be in that place. There are a few tables outside where you can share your meal with flies and wasps that will harass you the entire time you're there. I can say with confidence I won't be going back there, not even to get a refund for the money they stole from me.

Yelp
Solid spot for goodies and a quick breakfast or lunch- everything has been tasty so far, and we're looking forward to trying more. Note that their English muffin seems more like a Portuguese roll IMO, and the paninis don't keep much in the brown paper bags (they steam and make the bread kind of soggy, so best to eat immediately), but still good nonetheless. Fair warning that space is tight so it gets pretty chaotic during busy times (like lunch)- and there's a $10 minimum on credit card and no real POS system to speak of, so things can get confusing, like the time someone else grabbed a bag meant for us and the staff was kind of like, oh well? So the experience and organization could be better- I know it's good to be patient and understanding in Covid times, but like, simple non-Covid-related fixes like designating an area for pick-ups, or offering online preordering via Toast, or labels/names on bags so you know what's yours, could go a long way I think. This place has a lot of promise if done right.

Yelp
Fornax is the cutest and it might be one of my favorite places in Roslindale. No frills though -- this feels much more like your grandma's kitchen than a fancy bakery, so keep that in mind. Everything I have ever gotten here I could have definitely made myself in the same quality, but I am not complaining because I believe the cost to be reasonable for the time and labor required of Fornax's staff to bake these goods so I don't have to lol. This is the only local place in Roslindale where I am able to get an iced latte that didn't taste burnt (I tried the local "coffeeshops" multiple times and resorted to Dunkin before discovering Fornax). So far, I have tried -- Iced vanilla latte (whole milk): Yes. Very yum. Note that for the iced coffees there is only one size option (which is huge imo, it looks to me like 20oz), unlike the hot coffees which have different sizes. I have never been able to finish the iced coffee. Ham and Cheese Croissant: A little greasy and heavy, more like the Pillsbury croissant can in texture than a fluffy authentic croissant. I personally would get it again, but I wouldn't consider it the main attraction compared to everything else available. Breakfast Sandwich (w/ avocado on the "english muffin"): Many of the reviews on here mention that the English muffin is nothing like an English muffin.. I personally am not a fan of English muffins, so bought this off of those reviews which are entirely correct. This bread was very yummy, but nothing like an English muffin. It was sort of like a dinner roll that is heavy instead of fluffy. I was thrilled. As for the other ingredients, it tasted so authentic and homemade that I was instantly transported back to when I was a kid and my mom made homemade breakfast sandwiches when I wanted McDonalds but she wanted me to eat healthier. The only possible downside to this sandwich was that it was very very salty. Again, this worked out well for me as I love salt, but I could imagine it being too salty for a lot of other people. It takes a lot of a lover of salty food to say "hey, that's a lot of salt." Not sure if it was the bread or if they put salt directly into the sandwich. Rosemary Bacci: A good bread but could be heavier on the rosemary in my opinion. I put it in my fridge, which I recognize is blasphemy to the bread lovers, but it lasts a long time and was still good even with a slightly firmer texture from the fridge. Also, a note on aesthetics: This is the cutest freaking shop I have ever seen. The decor is so fun and cozy. I have not tried the sweets yet, but they look straight out of a storybook: not in an artificial and perfect kind of way like some of the fancy desserts in Boston proper, but instead like they were just pulled out of the grandmother's oven in a fairytale cottage. Particularly the miniature pies and the strawberry jelly boat pastry thing.

Yelp
Their bread is awesome, as are their pastries. Ordering was a little bit wonky as it was unclear who/where I was supposed to order from.

Yelp
The food is good, but the service is increasingly bad. It's consistently slow and sometimes inaccurate in terms of what food is provided and / or the price charged. My husband and I are regulars for weekday lunches. We know to call ahead since the lunch rush is busy. But even when we arrive 10-15 minutes after the estimated time we're given, we still end up waiting a while. Recently we waited for more than 30 minutes even though we showed up later than the estimated pickup time. I get that it's busy, but the reaction from an employee behind the counter made it worse. The first time we asked for an update, he shrugged and pointed to the kitchen. After another 15 mins, we asked if there was any way we could get a status update and the same employee said, "This isn't that kind of restaurant." This employee has also repeatedly under- or overcharged us for orders, which we've always taken in stride and helped clarify what we should pay. When we got home, we discovered that part of our order was missing. We like the food and want to support a local business, but customer service matters, and we'll be looking elsewhere for business.

Yelp
A fairly small store in Roslindale Village that honestly wasn't impressive. I came here on a weekday morning to check out their bread and pastries. I wanted to get a croissant, but they all looked pretty burnt. Instead, I opted for a butter horn danish and 2 1lb white batards. They have a $10 credit card minimum, so keep that in mind. The danish wasn't super flakey, but it was pretty sweet with the sugar and icing on top. One of the batards I got had a burnt end. You can get them presliced or unsliced, I chose unsliced to try to keep the bread fresher. They just stick your items in a brown paper bag. The batard was a semi-hard, chewy loaf that would be great toasted. Maybe it was an off day for them, so I guess I'll have to try out something different if I go back next time.

Yelp
Huge disappointment. Why do people like this place? If it is just the closest or most convenient place to you, I get it, but their food is terrible. I keep trying to give them new chances but they keep failing. Croissants: poor laminations, not crispy or light, and leaked oily butter (is it shortening?) toward the bottom. Overall it is heavy, chewy, greasy and dry Butter cookies with jelly: about the quality of my first from scratch cookies when I was 20. Wedding cookies: Dry, bland Breads (one sourdough, and another one that I think was intended to be a baguette): tight dry crumb and dry tough (not crisp) crusts. they need less salt and a wetter dough, a little more proofing and a little more kneading to develop gluten and to let the yeast really do its work. They also need a better oven with moisture to allow for a crisp but not tough crust.

Yelp
one of the cornerstones of Roslindale. This week to warm me inside and out I had the vegetarian chili and the vegan tomato veggie soup. Both incredibly delicious and full of heart healthy vegetables. This restaurant never disappoints! Don't forget to grab a sour dough boule and something sweet to take home.

Emily N.

Yelp
Love this place! They accommodated my custom bulk order of mini pies for a baby shower and were fantastic. The pies were a huge hit and people were grabbing boxes to take extras home.

Graham P.

Yelp
Found a slice of heaven near my new apartment when I moved recently nearby to this gem. Amazing bread! We tried a baguette and a rosemary boule, both were on point. I am a bread fanatic and this place lived up to the hype, plus they have coffee and beverages

Gina S.

Yelp
I was so happy when Fornax opened. Roslindale just didn't have anything like this a funky coffee bread bakery but in all that time they haven't done anything to keep it fresh. The outside is definitely showing it's age, a little paint would help. The inside hasn't changed either. Just one more thing, a couple of weeks ago two of the employees were smoking outside and came back in and started serving people. With all that being said I love there products the sourdough is amazing. Please spend some of my money on paint lol please.

Linda A.

Yelp
Cute, cute shop! Roslindale village is full of great little spots and I really like this one. So things can get a little cramped but with the biting wind don't we all just need a little reprieve from the frozen ears? They have bread of course and random other life necessities like bananas nut bread, biscotti and brownies. I was surprised to find out they have lunch offerings too. I've gotten the ham and cheese sandwich and it was super nostalgic deliciousness. Simple classic lunch fare. I had two sides that I wasn't crazy about (soup and coleslaw) but their moneymaker and namesake (the bread) is yummy. Parking can be crazy in the village but it's very close to the Roslindale commuter line.

David S.

Yelp
Amazing, homemade pastries and bread that are used for sandwiches not just at Fornax but at local restaurants as well. I usually get the tuna salad sandwich with chips and a side salad. For pastries, I'll get their homemade hostess cupcakes, homemade dingongs, cupcake, or cream puffs. Because everything is made from scratch and the cafe is small, service can take a bit - so I highly recommend calling ahead to place your order. They're continuously expanding their hours as we try to climb out of COVID, so don't assume they're closed without calling.

Kelsey S.

Yelp
A great local go-to spot for interesting breads and sourdoughs. Don't miss out on the breakfast sandwich: griddle sausage patty with crispy edges and just cooked through egg on a homemade English muffin. Comes with breakfast potatoes! This bakery fills the neighborhood with the scent of fresh baked bread and never disappoints!

Daisy P.

Yelp
So yummy! So tasty! Plus the dog biscuits are so cute and the prices aren't bad either. I just wish they were open for longer

Karen L.

Yelp
Long overdue review because I come here so often! It's one of the best local places, full of personality, great sandwiches, salads, cookies and BREAD! The staff always have pleasant attitudes, friendly, respectful. Now to the goodies: The squash soup is the best thing ever made in this world but it's only seasonal. The split pea and ham soup, add that to your list. It's delicious. The ham and cheese, simple no dhskwksjdn added and it's just perfect that way. I come here often and I love everything about this place.

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Great local shop...very cute place. Nice variety of items, however service and overall presentation of food somewhat lacking. Arrived at 503 pm and it was my mistake for not realizing the kitchen closes before bakery. Yelp just said "open" and I was from Virginia. My bad. Why did the cashier let us look a kitchen menu and decide on food before informing us the kitchen had closed 3 minutes ago! Ok. No problem. We selected alternate items. Baked items looked a bit messy. I'm used to imperfect frosting at home and yes it tastes the same. But this is a bakery...and several items looked like my teenage daughter could do a better job with decorating. Just looked homemade not bakery made. No pristine Georgetown swirl that's for sure. Cashier had issues fitting items in boxes. As they didn't have the correct sizes available. For us, it wasn't an issue but another customer wanted an item as a gift and a smushed cupcake would be less than nice. The customer declined the large cupcake and bought small sizes instead. Great!! Why not give her a free one?! No "thank you" or offer of a bag. Just plops items on counter. The last straw for me was the taste. The bread was good, and selection was excellent but the before mentioned cupcake- not super good. Average. If service is like this all the time, I'll pass! I'm sure with some extra training the young lady could improve. With so many options in Boston, I value customer service!

Odin H.

Yelp
Best bakery in town. Never let me down in my life and the cinnamon buns and twists are elite.

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
Walking into Fornax is like entering a bakery-sized version of your grandmother's cupboard. There are more than a dozen glass jars full of cookies - peanut butter, lemon sugar, chocolate biscotti, just to name a few - and they're all good, including the many vegan options that are available. There is always a smell of fresh bread in the store, and the loaves - baguette, garlic twist, organic whole wheat, many more - are stacked from nearly floor to ceiling. They're fresh because they sell fast, just as they do on Saturday morning at the local Roslindale farmer's market. I buy my bread here instead of the grocery store because Fornax's bread is much, much better. The best part of Fornax is the staff, who are bubbly and fun to talk with. Every customer is a "sweetheart" or a "honey". You can sit outside in the parklet, but if you're not there at peak hours there will be plenty of seats inside, where you can get your coffee refilled quicker, always with a smile.

Caitlin M.

Yelp
Visited Fornax for breakfast sandwiches. You get a sandwich and some potatoes for under $6, which is a great deal. The sandwiches are served on English muffins or brioche. The portions were large. There's not a ton of space inside but there's a little parklet outside where we were able to get a seat. Update: now have gotten a loaf of bread. Huge and delicious.

Mike T.

Yelp
Found there Baguette to be excellent; scones are interesting combo of fruit and pastry but did have one recently kinda dry... Love most their breads, have had many and not been disappointed at all. Not disappointment was last time in 2 weeks ago Bread was sold out! Credit given for following strict rules of 2 or fewer in store at a time.. kudos for doing your job responsibly. Mike T

Lauren G.

Yelp
Really lovely food & staff but the service is so slow - not good for a quick pick up. But the breads keep me coming back when I do have time!

A C.

Yelp
Really cute little breakfast and lunch spot with good bread and a nice assortment of pastries, soups and salads. As the only place of its kind in Roslindale Village, it's such an asset to the neighborhood. Service has always been great for me - fast and friendly. Four stars instead of five because the space is desperately in need of an update. Refinishing the floors, a brighter paint job, and a deep clean would go a long way, as would rearranging the space so the counters are aligned horizontally towards the rear, rather than vertically down the middle. That would really open up the space, which is often so crowded that it's difficult to move.

Arnold H.

Yelp
Soup was too spicy for me to evaluate. Cupcake and cookie was average. Bread was decent.

Kathleen L.

Yelp
The food here is great. That is not the problem. I went there for my family's breakfast sandwiches, I only got 2 of 3. I had to go back on a busy Saturday morning. This is not the first time, and it had been a while since I've been in due to prior bad service. The counter apologized, but clearly the message did not sink in..I walked out, opened my wrapped sandwich to find it was the WRONG ORDER! Gave me the opportunity to show them EXACTLY what I was talking about...and then replies, 'Oh, I gave you the wrong bag, someone else's sandwich. Sorry about that.' Certainly no offer of a refund or anything. Maybe bake an extra batch of cookies to give the recipients of bad orders. Considering a long-standing pattern of bad service I don't see that happening. I finally got the correct sandwich but missed a rare opportunity to have a quiet breakfast with my family on a Saturday. Fellow local business supporters- order by phone early and check your orders! There is a very good chance it was screwed up.

Nick S.

Yelp
This place is a local treasure. Incredible bread, pastries, salads sandwiches and more. Probably my favorite single bakery in the United States. Down-to-earth, neighborhood atmosphere, friendly staff and the owners are terrific people. This is the kind of place you want in your neighborhood. They have an old world approach to bread that reflects an impressive pedigree of quality and tradition. Drive however far out of your way you need to visit Fornax. Favorite foods? Sourdough boule, apricot envelope. If you're starting to feel like real food is dead, this is your place.

Alan B.

Yelp
The one paper thin slice of salami on their salami and onion sandwich. The ingredients were excellent, service was fine, but putting this amount of salami on a $9 sandwich is egregious. Salami is not expensive at all so the serving size shouldn't be so sparing. Feel absolutely bamboozled.

C. R.

Yelp
Based on what I've ordered so far, I give this place three stars for being ok. The chicken vegetable soup tasted weird. Maybe because of the root vegetables in it, specifically rutabaga and turnips. I love turnips. Not sure why it tasted so odd. A friend tried it and also thought it tasted weird and not so good. The butternut squash was pretty yummy but it was cold like it came from the refrigerator. I had to heat it. The ham and cheese croissant wasn't very tasty and very greasy. The vegan chocolate chip cookies were hard and not so good. I'm not a vegan. Next time I'll try the regular ones. I've had pastries there in the past that were great so maybe I'll go there for just that in the future. The menu is impressive, with salads and sandwiches. Will update my review when I return. The folks there were very nice and I hope that when I return the food I order will taste better.

Michelle N.

Yelp
We tried Fornax for lunch after reading all the amazing Yelp reviews. We were not disappointed. I had the roasted vegetable sandwich on multigrain and my friend had the Grilled Chicken. Both were delicious. Although, I do wish they offered chips other than just Lay's potato chips to go with the sandwich - like a multigrain or baked chip. We also ordered a peanut butter cookie for dessert (soft and chewy) and a treat for our pup! Everyone left happy and full!

Mike S.

Yelp
We love Fornax. Great sandwiches and fresh baked bread. Delicious pastries. All of their sandwiches can be served as a half-sandwich, so you can always have just the right size snack. The decor is a little beat up, but I think that is their style and not a mistake. Small but great outside seating in the warmer months. Great place to stop an get and get a bite!!

Lina P.

Yelp
Love the fact we have a place to get fresh baked bread! Didn't like the service! No great parking, seating inside is minimal! Soup I got was ok! The staff does not like if you have to check out what they offer before you order! New people have to see what you have to offer! Check it out and make your own opinion!

Christine T.

Yelp
This place is just another adorable local shop in Roslindale. I was walking around the neighborhood one morning just exploring and I do love me a bakery not to mention I wanted a little something to much on to go with my coffee. They have a great selection of pastries, cookies, and I was seriously tempted by the cupcakes which also looked amazing. There's not a large seating area inside, however as others have noted there's a parklet just off to the side of the building which is open to anyone btw. It was a beautiful day so I figured I'd enjoy my treats al fresco. I'll certainly be back to check this place out again when I return. It was terrific not to mention I love supporting local businesses too.

Daniel I.

Yelp
I love this place, Very friendly staff love the atmosphere, but what made this place 5 stars is the vegan Brownie... I was gonna post a picture but they way my mouth is set up... This brownie was chewy so good that it made my year and it's only June... I will continue buying brownies but I may have to file a complaint if I get dierbeetus ...the way my health insurance is set up I can't get a cold

Jamie H.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop. All the folks who work here are always super friendly. Clearly a hit with the locals which is always a good sign! In terms of vegan food there is always a soup and usually some variety of oatmeal cookie. Sometimes they also have muffins, scones, or cupcakes. They also have delicious, fresh affordable bread and they'll cut it for you. Try it! There is also a sweet little parklet for outdoor seating, but not much in the way of shade.

Zack D.

Yelp
Religiously make the trip up here once a week from JP for a loaf of bread. The multigrain boule is great for sandwiches! In the warmer months they also have a park-let which is nice to sit at on a nice day. Very friendly staff. Overall, it's a great neighborhood stable in Rozzie. You can occasionally find their loafs at Harvest Co-op and City Feed, but it's best to get it fresh from the source.

Shannon B.

Yelp
I don't understand the hype about this small, cold, outdated, hippy-dirty place. When I think of a bakery I think of a warm and inviting place with the smell of fresh baked bread in the air. This ain't it! It's a corner-closet restaurant and store with old and rickety tables that need a good wiping down. The counter to order is awkward and the baristas don't make any effort to assemble the people who crowd around waiting to order into any line. After we ordered we chose to sit at their window bar seats as all the tables were either filthy or loose ( think sitting there eating and having to press your foot down the whole time to level it). When the food arrived it came out on plastic french fry trays with a bit of parchment paper over it. I couldn't believe how unsophisticated that was for a $12 sandwich I was expecting a plate at least. We asked for ketchup and waited for almost 10 minutes until someone got us some that was literally at the end of its life and sooo crusty. She promised that the kitchen staff were getting some from "downstairs" but never returned with the new bottle. The food was average at best, dry and nothing I couldn't have made at home and the bread was actually dry and overly toasted. We ate what we could and upon getting ready to leave we collected out plastic baskets and asked the man behind the counter if someone will come collect it and he pointed to the back of the store and told us to put it in the different bins. I couldn't believe that he didn't offer to take it for us, that he would make us walk through the piles up crowd to disassemble our trays and cutlery. Whew! The customer service is lacking! Overall the lack of quality from the bread combined with the watery, spice-less chai tea, the small and rickety hard chairs and the total lack of ambiance or warmth will not bring me back or recommend this place at all. Shame because I brunch with a group of friends weekly and would've liked to make this my new spot.

Yelp
I want to give love to a local store holding its own in a hopeful corner of Roslindale Square. I've gone in 4 times and been disappointed every time. Sigh. The cookies arrayed in smudged jars behind the cash register are not large and they are not fresh. This small, stale, double chocolate cookie was sadly lacking any chocolate chips and cost $2.25! Part of the problem and the charm, I suppose, is their decor. The coffee dispensers are on top of a plant stand-- the kind where 5 widely spaced, tubes of metal make the shelf. So you can not set your cup down on a plant stand and add sugar or milk---you have to walk it over to the counter. The milk is in the fridge next to the plant stand. However, the coffee is so weak, milk is unnecessary. The oatcakes are displayed in an antique cookie tin at the register. I thought about trying one, but I did not want to reach in to the corroded tin and risk tetanus -- and how many other people had already had their hands in there to get an oatcake? I had a breakfast sandwich with egg and avocado on a brioche bread. It was really just a bread sandwich with nearly nothing in it. And it was $9! The skimpiness of the filling was criminal. Finally, I bought a sourdough loaf. It was not sour. It was not crisp crusted. It had no large bubbly structure. And tragically, it deflated/dented just by resting on my arm as I walked home. It was a fine loaf of white bread, but it wasn't sourdough. The stars are for the long hours they are open, and for trying in Roslindale Square.

Yelp
Yummy! I went to this place in search of a delicious chocolate chip cookie. I told them it was my first time and they gave me the breakdown of their wonderful selection. I went with the chocolate chip cookie and brownie. Both were excellent! The cookie was crispy on the edges but soft in the middle...perfection!. The brownie I was hesitant about because I don't like cake-y brownies but this one was incredible. It still had a solid texture to it. Definitely coming back! Next time I'll get bread too which looked legit.

Yelp
Come on, Fornax! You get Boston's Best of award for bread so you're done trying? I ordered a Roasted Veggie sandwich with chicken on a baguette and it left a lot to be desired. Now, I can understand if the place was packed and the sandwich station was slammed with orders, but my girlfriend and myself were the only ones in there. What came out was a toasted baguette with sparse amounts of eggplant and peppers, with the saddest amount of hummus. No caramelized onions or chicken to be found, and I know with it costing $9.15 that I paid for the add-on. The baguette was good, I'll give that to you, so yes maybe your award was valid. But that's no excuse to overlook an order and serve a sparse sandwich. Until next time!

Yelp
I've been craving fornax and last week we didn't have clinic so I couldn't get my fix. Today I got the Danish snail and it was too good! Cinnamon taste with raisins and walnuts amazing! Too bad i scarfed it down before I could take a pic!

Yelp
My husband and I absolutely LOVE Fornax. We've considered moving out of Roslindale to relocate closer to our jobs but I always say "I don't want to live in a neighborhood without Fornax!" what would I do without their amazing breakfast sandwiches and potatoes every Saturday/Sunday morning? or their freshly baked bread, and treats! I have not experienced bad customer service - we are regulars here, it can get busy at times especially on the weekends but the kitchen and counter staff keep things moving! The decor and revolving art exhibits at Fornax creates a really homey/farm-housey feel - it's one of my favorite spots in Rozzie

Yelp
Wow!!! What a gem! Discovered on an Off The Beaten Path Food Tours tour, I was blown away by Fornax and wish we had a bread bakery like it near me. Everything I tried was fantastic from the bread to the sandwiches to the cookies to the English muffins to the scones. Loved the soup as well, and the staff is super nice and accommodating. Would give them 6 stars if I could!

Yelp
Best! Butter! Croissant! Ever! It has fantastic flakey crunch on the outside, yet the inside is dense and buttery. I didn't think it would be anything special when I first ordered, but by the end I was really sad I was going to finish eating it. I also got the breadstick, which has a delicious garlicky savory exterior and a soft interior. The cafe au lait is admittedly whatever, but my friend said she really liked the earl grey tea. Overall, it's a great way to start off your Saturday away from the crazy city.

Yelp
Ok I'm not going to rehash what everybody else is saying. It's all true. The main reason for this review is a recent addition, well two recent additions if you include the Roslindale Main Streets "parklet" that just got installed outside. ** THEY HAVE AN ESPRESSO RIG NOW *** This is a huge deal given that the other coffeehouse in the village closed up months ago. You can get coffee at many places nearby but the espresso-based options are few and far between. Parklet, pop-tarts and espresso. Can't go wrong there.

Yelp
Great bakery cafe and the freshest bread you can find. Had a tuna melt on semi sour and a spinach salad. As good as it gets!

Yelp
Fornax was one of the first "new" businesses to put down roots in Roslindale Village over 15 years ago. Not only is all their food prepared from "scratch", their bread (and you can smell it rising after hours -- such a fabulous aroma that emanates from their kitchen) is the only bakery bread I will eat when I decide to jump off the gluten-free wagon. No other bread is worth the belly-ache, in my opinion! In addition to feeding us with genuine food and warm hearts, owners Kim and Chris Fallon consistently donate food to neighborhood events and show up to support the community in other ways as well. I recommend the genoa, tomato and carmelized onion sandwich, the chicken vegetable soup whose broth is rich with pureed squash, and for sides, the mayo-free cole slaw and tender roasted potatoes. I'm proud to have a business like Fornax in my neighborhood -- a great place to meet with new clients, too (I'm a Realtor) to show them the best of what Rozzie has to offer.
