The 38 Essential Amsterdam Restaurants

"Fou Fow Ramen was founded in 2011 by Chinese-Dutch filmmaker Fow Pyng Hu as a ramen shop on the second floor of the famous Toko Dun Yong market on the Zeedijk. That location has closed, but three full-fledged restaurants followed: Fou Fow Ramen locations on Elandsgracht and Van Woustraat, as well as Fou Fow Udon on Prinsengracht. Try the sophisticated shio ramen with salty chicken broth and sababushi (dried and smoked mackerel), or the tonkotsu ramen, the ultimate hug in a bowl, which delivers deep, fatty flavors." - Monique van Loon

We went there really spontaneous for dinner and were happy that they still had a table for us. The restaurant is really cute and it has nice seating space outside (many people walk through it, a bit annoying). The menu offered many vegan options which was really nice! The ramen were okay but nothing special (the noodles were fine but the tofu didnt taste really fresh). All in all it was quiet okay and the prices were reasonable.

Probably my favorite place to eat in Amsterdam for the last year and a half. All ramens are great, size large is amazing, I get a proper meal! People working there and kind and warm and atmosphere is always good and cozy, as many people are enjoying themselves!

My friends and I were making our way to another ramen place (but realized it was closed that day) when we stumbled upon this gem. We were a table of three—two of which are vegetarian. They had great vegan/vegetarian options. Will order the lemon ginger ramen next time. 5 stars!

Google
The food was quite good! The dumplings were delicious, and the ramen was decent. We went with a stroller and a toddler (which I’d say was quite brave of us), but the staff was very friendly and did their best to help us get settled!

Google
It’s our favourite spot to eat ramen. You can feel that the broth has been properly boiled for several hours, as it should be. The taste is amazingly rich and delicious.

Google
The basic Ramen portions are normal and will suffice with the starters. The large Ramen plates are really filling and more than enough even without the extra starter plate. Sugar free tea reallllly sugar free, not like standart sugar free tea can from market. I haven't come across a very special taste, but if you prefer ramen to fill your stomach during the day, it's definitely a restaurant to go to in Jordan. the service is fast and the staff are generally friendly.

Google
It is really good, ill try other menu next time. but why the hakata has onions inside? it taste weird. i dont think it is common to have hakata with onions.. and the noodle should be thinner for hakata no? but next ill try the original...

Google
Delicious Vegetarian Ramen! This place reminds me of the crowded heated pho restaurants in Vietnam and the quality is almost as good. The vegetarian broth was so flavourful, it was maybe slightly a bit too salty but delicious. The noodles were chewy yet perfect for the bowl. A bowl will cost you €16.40 for a classic but the portion is generous. The ambiance is nice as it’s chill for a friend catchup or a nice place for solo dining. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options! Would recommend as it’s in a nice neighbourhood of Amsterdam. Follow me on Instagram @abiratesit for more reviews 😄

Yelp
Felt like I was in food hell for most of my time in Amsterdam. This place was one of the lone bright spots. We both ordered the tonkatsu ramen, which was great and really hit the spot on a chilly evening. Place is really crowded as it seems quite popular with the local folk.

Yelp
Expect to wait for a few minutes if you come on a weekend day. After a brief ten minute wait, my husband and I enjoyed delicious ramen to warm up on a chilly day! I ordered the Tori Ginger Lemon Ramen, and the chicken itself was possibly the best chicken I've ever had in my life. So tender and flavorful--I would order any dish with chicken there! My husband also enjoyed his Tonkotsu Ramen, which has a heavy pork flavor. The service was great, and I would come back if I was in the area again.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner one night knowing there were no reservations and were seated right away. Our table was in the far back left corner, which ended up working perfectly, but we did receive some negative attitude/energy when initially asking how long it would take for a seat outside. We ordered pot stickers and tan tan men ramen dishes and food was good - would be ideal on a visit during cold weather. Transparently, could have gone without this stop on our 9-day visit to Europe, but if you're looking for something familiar and comforting, worth a shot!

Yelp
The ramen was great and the service was efficient. I came in on a Saturday evening, a little bit after their opening time but they still had a couple of tables inside. You could see that they are very efficient. As soon as someone leaves, they turn the table over quite quickly. I had the Tori Lemon Ginger Ramen, which had chicken instead of pork. It was a unique taste for ramen. For appetizers I had the Rayu Tofu and Goma ae (spinach in sesame dressing), which were both outstanding. I might have liked those more than the ramen! I also tried the Iki beer and it came in a bottle. I would definitely come back the next time I want ramen in Amsterdam.

Yelp
Can't beat the location and chill atmosphere here. Prices are good and food is delicious. Overall a 5-star for me since I've returned here many times. Large meals and lots of food. A big plus for tourists. It's a no-frills type restaurant and will be warm in hot weather and also no reservations. Usually not a long wait though.

Yelp
We stopped in for an early dinner, having noticed they have vegan ramen options. They have at least 3 different ramens that can be made vegan: a shoyu, a miso, and tan tan men. We each got the vegan tan tan men (€15.50), plus a side of goma ae (€5.50) and sui vegetable gyoza (€6.50). The goma ae was solid, but had an unusual tartness to the sesame paste. The gyoza was solid, but not the greatest value. Now, the ramen: the ramen looked incredible. It came with spinach, a couple pieces of tofu, menma, vegan mince meat, seaweed, and green onion. The broth was very spicy and extremely oily, but lacking depth to match. It was tasty enough but I was expecting more -- the szechuan peppercorns were not noticeable and by the end of the bowl, there was what seemed like a couple tablespoons of chili oil sitting there. Good, friendly, quick service, and a nice dining environment. Just not the most memorable ramen.

Yelp
I recently visited this restaurant with a convenient location, but my experience left me with mixed feelings. While the location was certainly a plus, I found the ramen itself to be underwhelming. In addition, I couldn't help but notice that the portion sizes were on the smaller side. For those with heartier appetites, this might leave you feeling a bit unsatisfied. In summary, while the restaurant's location is a definite perk, the ramen and portion sizes left something to be desired. If you're in the area and craving ramen, it might do the trick, but there are likely better options out there.

Yelp
Boasting a clean & sleek interior as well as great outdoor seating Fou Fow Ramen definitely has the curb appeal too draw you in! Lucky enough the flavors are here to match too! Tonkotsu ramen is my favorite so I was beyond ecstatic to see they had it on the menu. I ordered the basic Tonkotsu ramen + half a boiled egg Broth lived up to the name and had the rich flavor you'd come to expect! The added veggies were also crisp and fresh and offering great balance to the fatty chashu + rich broth. The staff were also super warm and accommodating. Our boat tour ended late and we found ourselves sitting down close to closing time. Staff never rushed us and were quite friendly~ If it's rich flavors and and a ramen itch that need scratching then I definitely recommend Fou Fow Ramen the next time you're strolling the canals in Amsterdam!

Yelp
Waited for probably 15 min on a Saturday @6p, I'm from SF where ramen comes by the dozen and just came back from japan. Was craving something warm and soupy and glad I stumbled upon Fou Fow. Lemon ginger broth was flavorful, noodles were perfectly chewy and delicious. Shio and shoyu broths looked terribly tasty as well though :) €12 for ramen (would get again) €5 for spinach salad (would pass) Service was friendly, food was yum!

Kaelani A.

Yelp
Came highly recommended from a friend and Yelp. However, we found the food very lackluster. The attempt was there and it looked amazing, but the flavor was disappointing. It felt too light for ramen and lacked the deep, savory flavor you would expect.
google avatar

Grace Y.

Yelp
This restaurant is overrated. It was pretty packed when we came, but we didn't have to wait. There are about five different broth options, including tonkatsu, shio, etc. and for each option, you can get basic, classic (has spinach, bean sprouts, and a couple more toppings), or large. I wanted a broth without garlic due to my garlic and onion intolerance, but there unfortunately wasn't one. My boyfriend and I both got the tonkatsu classic. The broth was super oily, the chasu pork didn't taste that good, and the egg was still cold. The only redeeming quality was that the noodles were pretty bouncy. I wouldn't recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Good place to get a quick Ramen fix and get out of the cold. Service great, it's a price performer for what you get. Soup was good but not great.... noodles perfect. I come from a area that has Great Ramen as well as travel to Japan a lot so my Ramen expectations are high. It's worth the quick stop.
google avatar

Alysia W.

Yelp
This place is what ramen dreams were made for. Their broth was very flavorful and filled with collagen. The noodles were fresh and prepared to order. My favorite was the marinated egg and slices of pork. I ordered the tonkotsu classic and my family had the shio ramen plus drinks for 52€. Again, this was a decent price for dinner in Amsterdam (or lunch for that matter). Similar to other restaurants in the area, the seating was limited, but the service was fast. I'm not usually a fan of ramen and this place changed my mind. I guess I need to travel to Japan next for the ultimate experience! I will definitely keep this on my list of places to visit again in the future.

Yelp
My hostel recommended Fou Fow for lunch, and I was actually very pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was! Ramen-wise, the menu covers the major ramen broth base categories, shio (salt), tonkatsu (pork), shoyu (soy sauce), and miso. They also have dan dan mian and cold noodles. They also serve small dishes, mainly gyoza. I ordered the basic tonkatsu (€10.50) and was struck by how great the noodles were - they were thick and almost al dente, making them a wonderfully chewy vehicle for the tonkatsu broth. (I know some other people prefer the thinner alkaline noodles, but I love the thicker, slightly kinky noodles, and Fou Fow does them well.) The broth itself, though on the thin side for a tonkatsu broth, had decent flavor, and the pork was flavorful and reasonably tender. Service was quick and friendly - as a time-strapped tourist, I appreciated that I spent tops 20 minutes at Fou Fow. It was one of the more reasonably-priced and filling meals I had while in Amsterdam, and definitely worth a look if you're in the area.

Maddie B.

Yelp
Pretty yummy and decent price--I've had a lot of ramen and this wasn't a great broth for me, but it still tasted good. My bowl was also less salty than normal so it's probably healthier than most ramen I've had! Our waiter forgot part of our order but they were otherwise nice and moved fast at a busy time of night so we had a good time.

Yelp
Ramen. Not something I go out of my way to get. I usually hate it because I don't eat pork and that's a hard substitute (despite originally ramen was made with chicken only). That said here they can make it with chicken - they slice the chicken slim and it's got a great flavor. The broth is solid and you can spike it with some hot sauce. Hand-made gyozas were freaking fantastic. Ya. This is legit.

Yelp
I was meeting up with a girlfriend for a quick lunch and decided to try out Fou Fow Ramen. Food: The menu is basic with different types of ramen (miso, soy, tonkatsu) and gyozas. I ordered the tonkatsu classic (I judge my ramen houses by how well they make their tonkatsu ramens) and my girlfriend ordered the miso classic. We also ordered the pork and the veggie gyozas. The pork gyozas were definitely better than the veggie gyozas. My tonkatsu ramen was ok, but lacked a bit of the pork flavour that its known for. Drinks: We ordered two glasses of green tea. Price: 42.00 EUR for two people. Ambiance: The restaurant is located at the end of Elandsgracht. It's a very simple narrow restaurant with seating on the left and the right and a couple of tables in the back. Service: The service is friendly and efficient. Would I go back? Not sure since there is some stuff ramen competition in Amsterdam now.
google avatar

Linda R.

Yelp
Quaint ramen restaurant that is crowded. The tables are small, but the service is adequate. Both Hubby and I got the miso classic ramen. The broth was flavorful and there was a generous amount of toppings, but the meal was not terribly memorable. Ok value for two miso ramen and large still water for €33.
google avatar

Yurybett S.

Yelp
This ramen spot seems to be very popular. Many locals rode passed it to see if the wait was worth it. The wait was worth it! Good broth and good noodles. The egg could have been cooked a little more for my preference but it was still good. I got the spicy ramen w/ out meat and added corn. I would for sure come again.
google avatar

Yelp
Before everyone goes crazy... Let me explain, I understand everyone loves this place.. But it really lacked depth for me. I mean i've had amazing ramen in Paris, NYC and even back home in Pakistan (their i said it) but this is just average, at least for me. It's a really small establishment an they are usually packed. So I understand a lot of people prefer it. The reason it got three stars from me is because it has good and fast service and average doesn't mean bad (mostly). I would not be coming back. It's quite sad but so far nothing in Amsterdam from the Asian restaurant has wowed me so far. I'll keep looking.
google avatar

Lynn M.

Yelp
I give it four stars for Amsterdam. Compared to NYC, I would give it three. Amsterdam doesn't have THAT many amazing restaurants so this is pretty dank. The soup base, for the pork broth ramen, was too salty. It didn't surprise me because most ramen places are like this. I should really go to Japan and find out what's good with this situation. My friends got the summer special cold noodles. That dish was really good. Very lit. It had fake crab meat, seaweed, some sauce (not too salty) and many other toppings that went well with the noodles. Overall, I would go back but not the best ramen I've ever had.
google avatar

Viet L.

Yelp
I think Japan has ruined ramen for me. I try to be as unbiased as possible since I know there isn't much to be compared but the ramen here was just decent. There was a short line (where you have to put your name on the board) when I arrived but I was delighted to see some good food on the menu. Ordered some gyozas, chicken wings, and, of course, ramen. The service was good, but the food was just okay. It didn't have a richness to it that I'm used to. The apps were pretty good though.
google avatar

Madison K.

Yelp
Fire ramen shop! long wait and good yelp reviews initially drew us in! Good warm sake and amazing ramen! We got the basic chicken and the spiced broth chicken (which we subbed with the standard pork). A great lunch in Amsterdam!
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Loved my experience here! I have been looking forward to eating here, and it was definitely what I was hoping for. The ramen was amazing, we had the classic one/ We also ordered the homemade gyoza, which were delicious. Unfortunately, they were out of kimchi, but at least there is something to look forward to next time around. The place itself has a nice atmosphere - light, a bit canteen-y, but still trendy due to the decoration. You cannot reserve. I was with a friend, late lunch, just made it 15 minutes before they top serving. So my advice would be to come with 2 persons, or max 4, do not come completely famished, so you can bear waiting for a bit...or hope for the best, is also an option ;) I would give the place 5 stars, but I feel I have a duty to come back, order some more dishes, and check on consistency, before I can do that :) And have some more Iki beer. So - until next time, Fou Fou!
google avatar

Teresa Y.

Yelp
Awesome ramen place that always has a line but it's worth it! We got the fried gyoza, fried chicken wings (delish!), tonkatsu ramen with corn and tan tan ramen (spicy) with corn. Really hits the spot especially on a cold rainy night!
google avatar

Nevbahar C.

Yelp
I'm living only 3 min. walking distance away and just tried the place this weekend. Regretting it big time! I'm not an expert of Japanese cuisine but depending on my knowledgable friends' judgement this should be one of the best in town. It's hard to find a table especially during weekend so get ready for waiting. I loved boiled vegetable dumplings and classic veggie ramen. The menu is short and simple so you'll easily find your way. Prices are decent and Asahi is a bonus!
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Do you want a tasty warm soothing bowl of broth, noodles, and pork? This is a great little restaurant with really good ramen and gyoza. If you are in the neighborhood, you should definitely stop in. The menu is fairly simple with choices of beef broth, chicken broth, veggie soy broth, and chicken broth with miso, then you pick basic, classic, or classic large, and you can even add extras of pieces! So you can customize it a bit. And if you like dumplings, please try the gyozas. I would eat them all day! The restaurant is bright and small but feels more cozy than small. And service was very nice, fairly quick, and just really pleasant. Overall, very nice place with tasty dishes!
google avatar

Telmo O.

Yelp
Japanese food = sushi, right? And sushi is really tasty yummy, right? Well it's fine for you bourgeoisie to indulge in this sophisticated delicacy, but speaking for the rest of us in the proletariat, I say that if we wanted raw fish we'd chomp on some traditional herring (back me up dutchies). Fortunately, there is more to japanese cuisine than that, and this restaurant is the perfect example. Everything is good here, and not that pricy in my opinion. Go for the pork stew, that's one of my favourites. What I actually like the most about this restaurant is that it combines its oriental theme with a modern/urban setting. Usually asian restaurants have these over-the-top decorations and background music, that actually does not cater to my taste that much. I find this environment much more inviting :)
google avatar

Asia L.

Yelp
Love this place! I'm so excited there's a new ramen place in town and in a great location. (This is the same owner as the Le Fou Fow above the Dun Yong grocery store. He's moved his restaurant here.) First of all, as a vegetarian/pescetarian, just having a veggie option makes my day! How many times have I sat with my carnivorous friends watching them guzzle pork broth to their hearts content? Even better though is that the veggie ramen is delicious! I've had veggie ramens that seemed to fall short and you have the feeling that meat would just give it more flavor, but this one was delicious in itself. The housemade veggie dumplings were also tasty and cooked well, but not the main stars of this meal. This place is no doubt already a hit. I just hope that it doesn't mean waiting out the door next time! As for the decor, it's light and playful with a beautiful mural on the wall. This atmosphere matches really well with the spirit of the place and the graciousness of the owners. They couldn't have opened at a better time with the winter chill approaching. Already thinking about how to pace ourselves so we don't go every day. Some ramen and warm sake -- ahh, who could ask for anything more?
google avatar

Aj J.

Yelp
Really good ramen for Europe! The gyoza, classic ramen, aubergine, and salmon were very tasty. For a quick lunch, it hit the spot. If you're jonesing for Ramen, this is a great spot. Next time I'll try the ginger flavor.
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Updating the review to add one star due to the autumn special. it's a lemon ginger chicken broth and it's spectacular. If they take it off the menu, one star reduction. It's that good.

MIke F.

Yelp
I came here for lunch and did not leave disappointed. I ordered the large special ramen bowl and a side of boiled vegetable/pork dumplings. Both were very tasty and i would come back here again.
google avatar

CK H.

Yelp
This place is very authentic yet down to earth Ramen place. We got so lucky and got a seat outside as we walked up when people were leaving. The food is really, really good, and a great place to people watch.
google avatar

Simon L.

Yelp
This is the branch from the Fou Fow Ramen @ Elandsgracht. Now you don't have to wait in line and enjoy the same good quality of Ramen in the Pijp area.
google avatar

Kelsey V.

Yelp
On these cold days, I crave soup. Soup, soup and more soup. And I had been wanting to try this place for what seems like forever, so when I was in the neighborhood, and it was cold, it was my go-to. And it didn't disappoint! I had the basic shio and it was warm, tasty and filling. Bonus points for the attentive and fast service - I was in-and-out of there in a flash! But a review from me would not be complete without a comment on hygiene. It wasn't the cleanest place I have ever seen. Tables were dirty (although I saw them wipe down a few), floor was dirty, etc. I didn't look in the kitchen as it probably would have scared me. But that aside, four stars for a great lunch for just 10,95 euros.
google avatar

Yu-Hsien L.

Yelp
Best ramen place that I have been in Amsterdam. The food is very authentic. I especially love the Shio ramen and dumpling :-) The service is also good. It's hard to find the good quality of food and service when it comes to ramen place in AMS.
google avatar

Max C.

Yelp
Very tasty ramen, cozy place. A bit too salted but we finished the soup till the last drop. Expect me once a week :-))
google avatar

P B.

Yelp
You won't find a more authentic Japanese ramen house in Amsterdam. So stop looking! Fou Fow prepared each bowl to order, with painstakingly fresh and homemade ingredients.
google avatar

Viktoria K.

Yelp
Best ramen noodles i have ever tasted. Also i reccomend the iki juzu beer, it goes perfectly with the noodles. The place is very popular and crowded especially in the weekends, so try to come outside normal dininghours to avoid standing in a Line.
google avatar

Marcos S.

Yelp
Lovely broth and the ramen was good. Chicken was a bit dry but overall a very good experience. I'd recommend.
google avatar

Chu Z.

Yelp
I don't know the difference between this Fou Fow and the one in de pilp. It is tasty but the one in de pilp is more tasty for me . I went Fou Fow Ramen for about 5/6 Times , it is so good to have a warm soup in the winter . Ramen is a very good choice .
google avatar

Marc B.

Yelp
One of the best in town! Not that there is a huge variety of ramen places to choose from...but this soars. The restaurant is warm and tasteful...and so is the ramen. Simple menu. Cooked in an open kitchen. Always busy but never too long a wait.

Ingolf H.

Yelp
English: This is my favourite Ramen restaurant so far, even compared to "Na Ni Wa" and "Takumi" in Dusseldorf, Germany. I got the Tan Tan Ramen XL bowl and it was fantastic. The broth had the right amount of spiciness from different spices and was incredibly rich. The egg was on the point. The noodles were perfect. I don´t know how to make a bowl of ramen better than this. My compliments! Respekt!
google avatar

Derek C.

Yelp
Very good noodle and always with a queue at night. So please make sure you are earlier than 20:30 ensure to be seated before 21:00.
google avatar

Alberto G.

Yelp
Very good traditional Ramen soup in the heart of the 9 streets. I love this place for a quick bowl of Ramen. The menu is very simple and uncomplicated but it hits the spot just fine. Service is also pretty fast and efficient, as most of the items in the ramen are prepared beforehand. Also you can taste the "local" ingredients as the people in the kitchen and some of the staff are Japanese natives. As far as drinks they have the usual Japanese brands, Asahi and Sapporo. All in all highly recommended if you are in the area!
google avatar

Charles L.

Yelp
Not a bad place to end up if you're looking for a ramen fix in the Jordaan. The tonkotsu was competent for Amsterdam but wasn't as good as Ramen-Ya's. The egg was perfectly cooked, but everything else was just ok. The tebasaki wings were good, but they cost €1/wing. TL; DR: OK for Amsterdam, expensive. Try it once then go to Ramen-Ya instead haha
google avatar

Nick J.

Yelp
Yes! Japanese ramen in the Jordaan. The chef used to run a small Ramen spot in Chinatown by the same name. This new establishment has the same great service and delicious noodles. Nice variety of dishes including vegetarian options. Best part is drinking the warm broth at the end - you can feel it traveling all the way down to your feet. I'll be coming back...a lot. Oishii !
google avatar

Ellen C.

Yelp
Great find! We were in town for a few days and were sick the first couple days. When we finally were able to eat, this place hit the spot and it was a perfect hideaway from the cold. The ramen was really good, and the staff was great. Our meal was 30 euros for two huge bowls of ramen and two teas. It was also nice that it was out of the super touristy area, so it felt like more of a local spot. We would definitely go here again.
google avatar

Jacob T.

Yelp
Just what I needed on a damp fall day in Amsterdam to get me back on my feet and enjoying my weekend there. The gyoza were very good and the ramen was outstanding! Quite simply, if you find yourself in Amsterdam and want to rejuvenate on a cold day, go here!

Kriszta L.

Yelp
Very good athmosphere. We had the veggie ramen (Classic): great spices but it wasnt very warm. The service was nothing special- kind/fast but very silent. Will go again and would recommend still!
