Best Breakfasts in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Step inside this small cafe for a weekday breakfast that blends California cuisine and Filipino classics. The tight menu includes the usual fare — think avocado toast, waffles, and a breakfast burrito stuffed with tater tots and bacon — but also items leaning into Filipino inspiration. A sisig breakfast burrito makes a solid start to the day, or a sisig rice bowl with brown garlic rice and two sunny-side-up eggs. Orders can be placed online for pick-up if you’re running late to the office." - Matt Tillquist

Google
Small, clean and welcoming. Perfect for quick breakfast. I had the avocado toast with ricotta and hubby had the excellent breakfast burrito! Their coffee is better than most chains…service is fast and professional.

Google
Good breakfast choices for someone looking for a quick bite. Prices are a bit steep. Customer service is excellent. Plenty of seating for dine in. Street parking only.

Google
We came here for breakfast travelling from New Zealand, the coffee, orange juice and breakfast was just amazing. Coffee was perfect, orange juice was fresh, and the eggs / toast and bacon we had was absolutely delicious. Totally recommend

Eve Guymon

Google
This place is cute. It has fun seating and the food has a southwest/asian flare. And the Sising rice bowel is divine. Service was also 10/10. Great selection of Teas

Google
Love this place! So good I had to double back for breakfast after my coffee. The staff was friendly, attentive, and fun to be around. My drip coffee was delicious and the breakfast sandwich was exceptional - made to order, with a generous serving of fresh bacon and melted cheese (real cheese, not American). If you need a coffee or a bite downtown, look no further

Google
If you’re looking for a healthy breakfast options on Kearney street, Foundation cafe is the answer. Their avocado toast is the best I’ve had in this city.

Google
Tried to sisig fried rice bowl today cause I was craving Filipino food and it was fire!!They give you a lot so it almost makes up for the fact that it was $20. I’m Filipino so charging this much for a bowl of sisig and fried rice is atrocious but totally expected in this area

Google
Honestly the BEST place we could have found. My kids are picky eaters and we were downtown, nearing hangry, and looking for a spot to have lunch where everyone could find something off the menu. It was near closing time but the person working the front (the owner?) was incredibly sweet. She completely got the kid food situation and went above and beyond to make sure that we would all have something we were happy with. The kids loved their waffles and the grownups oohed and aahed over their breakfast sandwiches, delicious drinks, and amazing ube brownies. I'm only sad that we don't live nearby so we can't become regulars. 1000% would go back.

Yelp
Such a perfect little cafe with a very creatively curated menu. This is a marked step up from the typical San Francisco sandwich/bagel shop. Open early for breakfast and lunch which is very convenient if you're in the Financial District. Don't miss them!

Yelp
Really impressed by this place. It's clean, hip, and energizing to be here. The service is very friendly and helpful. The food and menu is a nice combination of the familiar and innovative. I tried the Grilled Salmon Rice Bowl. It was excellent: brown rice, kim chee, marinated soy cucumbers, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, and then a ginger-soy vinaigrette served on the side (so you can put as much or as little as you want on it). Fantastic flavors. Filling but healthy too. There are many lunch items I want to try on the menu: Fried Shrimp Po'Boy wrap, Shake Your Banh Banh, Sisig Fried Rice, and so many things. Also, the breakfast burritos and morning items sounded good. The place is small (not a lot of seating). A lot of to-go orders were heading out in the short time we were there. This is an excellent spot.

Yelp
*Celiac review* Went out of my way to grab to-go breakfast here, because they're one of the very few eateries around Market street I'm aware of who serve gluten-free breakfast options. This particular restaurant serves gluten free bread (I think from Mariposa bakery?) so I requested it for my breakfast sandwich with bacon. While the ingredients in their own tasted delicious and good quality, the bread was so stale and dry (not to mention it was a sourdough baguette type roll - too tough for the cooks to cut in half, thus too tough for a customer to realistically eat as a sandwich) so eating it was a chore and definitely not enjoyable. Also ordered an iced latte and I was disappointed at how bland it was. So bummed about this, but for two sub-bar items for $25.... Will be crossing this off my list.

Yelp
Great service. Reasonable priced foods at high quality. Make sure to get some hot sauce for your breakfast burritos!!

Yelp
So it does feel a bit excessive to pay $16.24 (including mandatory service charge + tax) for a bánh mì, especially as a grab-n-go office lunch. But it was a step above the sandwich place just a block away that churns out very mediocre sandwiches for about $2 less, so I suppose you're paying a premium for quality. All the items definitely felt a bit fancy for a FiDi lunch, so a nice indulgence to break up the workday. Avocado Toast w/ Spanish Jamon: I don't care if it's a cliché, I still love a good avocado toast. Especially when the avocado rests on a delicious thick grilled piece of ham with ricotta underneath. With the addition of meat and cheese, it's getting very close to sandwich territory, which might be why I enjoyed it so much. Shake Your Banh Banh: Easily the most expensive bánh mì I've ever had. But I did love the generous amount of fried chicken on it. Thin and crispy, kinda like chicken schnitzel. The deep fried crunch played well against the pickled veggies, which had the nice vinegary tang and a little sweetness. Sisig Fried Rice: Not crispy like sisig, but the pork chunks did hold a lot of nice marinated flavor. A lot more personality than the rather generic "rice bowl" you'll find at sandwich/salad places in the FiDi nowadays. I liked the garlic rice, but I kinda wish they used white rice instead of brown rice because is anyone ordering fried rice trying to be healthy?

Yinlan Z.

Yelp
Had the eggs and broccolini on toast. Eggs were cooked nicely, fluffy and well seasoned. Service was very friendly. Good coffee. A great cafe!

Natalie C.

Yelp
That older white lady with the thin hair and glasses is so rude. The way she speaks to customers is despicable. I did a pickup order the other day and she only put one out of the three orders in my bag for whatever reason. The other 2 were sitting right next to it. I asked for hot sauce and instead of handing it to me, she leaves it on the counter right in front of her and walks away, and trust me, I wasn't the only one she was giving bad service to. Never again will I go back and I will discourage anyone I know not to go. Not only does she give disgustingly rude "customer service", they tack on an automatic 2 - 5% to your bill as a service charge. Get out of here with that....pay extra for repulsive service?? No thanks....

Alex V.

Yelp
I was looking for a place to sit down, have a great sandwich, a cup of coffee, and just a tranquil spot to recharge in this part of downtown - - and I found it! Unexpected - because this block's strip of the doors wasn't promising anything special (to be fair, some places were still closed in the morning), but what a bright morning star this place is, on the backdrop of the grey and dull same-ol-same-ols around. A relief indeed. A separate word on the service - I am not often served like this in the restaurants even. People operate while literally running, valuing their customers' time. I was asked about 10+ different options of all kinds, all with humor and such an upbeat, that I woke without even having my coffee yet. In short - - return here I must.

Yelp
Came in for a weekday breakfast with a friend, we noted they had a variety of breakfast choices that worked for us both. We both ordered the Sunrise Bowl (garlic grain mix, spicy corn & pepper relish, braised greens, tomato, grilled spring onions, 2 eggs your choice, melted cheese, moringa pesto) which is vegetarian and gluten-free friendly. Very hearty and yummy breakfast (we ended up skipping lunch for the day since it was so filling). As for interior seating: there's a long picnic bench for larger crowds, and If I recall two smaller tables with chairs that can seat 2-3 comfortably.

Yelp
Two years ago Foundation was much better, now not so much. Their Foundation Bowl was filled with big chunks of fresh veggie, greens, etc and really good. I recently went and paid $18 for a Foundation Bowl filled with brown rice, 10 pieces of cherry tomatoes, peeled thin carrots and three slices of onions. I could have bought bags of brown rice for $18 at the grocery store! Very disappointing and never going back. Do better!!

Yelp
So psyched that this place opened up! The food is great and the portions are really generous. It's my new favorite downtown lunch spot.

Yelp
Great little cafe restaurant with fresh, organic ingredients. Loved the avocado toast here with fresh lemon zest and delicious ricotta cheese on fresh bread.

Yelp
Foundation Cafe has earned its fifth star from me! I stopped in today and discovered their new (to me) "bowl your own way" option and pretty much fell in love. The choices are diverse and I saw a lot of intriguing ingredients like grilled rainbow carrots, house kimchi and marinated tomatoes. I went with brown rice, cashew broccoli, bacon braised chard, roasted kabocha squash and topped it with soy ginger dressing and added avocado. I'm eating it in between keystrokes and it is divine! But this fifth star isn't just for the food. It's also for the dedicated dude at the register who was courteous and quick (as well as a tad bit flirty, in a completely appropriate way). Even though the California Donburi is no longer on the in store menu, they still have it. Ask for it by name if you're a fan.

Yelp
We used to do weekly office lunches. We stopped a few months ago, but for our last one, I picked Foundation Cafe. It arrived via Caviar on Friday, February 8th around 11:45am *All Kale Caesar Salad: Baby kale, classic Caesar dressing, and parmesan, brown butter croutons ($7) *Personal Cheezus: Brie, provolone & parmesan grilled cheese, truffle oil, sourdough levain, and a cup of tomato soup ($9.75) *Deviled Ranch Egg: Per Piece, Pickled Onion, cornichon spear, scallion ($1.50) The cheezus was nicely grilled and had a great truffle-ly aroma. Good amount of cheese as well. The tomato soup was okay. A little thin, a bit too sweet, and slightly too acidic. I think it would have been better if maybe it was a little creamier. I loved the salad. Lots of baby kale. But for most people, I think they would find this salad under dressed. They were only little bits of dressing as I rummaged through the salad. I find salads are normally over dressed for me, so this was fine. I like the pure taste of greens. (I know. I'm weird.) The deviled egg was okay. I like mine super savory (like with bacon) so this was an interesting play. Nice place for a salad and sandwich. And moderately priced. 4 stars.

Yelp
This place deserves so much more love! I am surprised that it wasn't busy at all when I was there for lunch on a weekday. Probably it's because there's construction right outside but I am not complaining because I didn't have to wait in line. You build your own bowl by filling out the paper they have at the counter and you just hand it over to the cashier when you're ready. I built my own bowl with 50/50 kale and quinoa, squash, fried eggplants, brussels sprouts and avocado with soy ginger dressing. Beside the quinoa being a bit too dry, everything else was delicious. The flavors are very well balanced and the food is perfectly seasoned. The squash was cooked perfectly and the fried eggplants were crispy and not oily at all. The portion is huge and will definitely keep you full for the rest of the afternoon. The service was super fast; my order was ready after 5 min of ordering. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
I was very excited when foundation reopened and have attempted to eat here about 10 times. Unfortunately they seem to close early almost everyday. Three stars for great food but minus two for closing between 130-200 daily rather than the posted 3.

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
This is my go-to breakfast spot when i'm traveling to SF for work! It never fails to be delicious and service is awesome, such nice people. The breakfast burrito is legendary
google avatar

Lynn T.

Yelp
Their memu seems appealing - like "fried eggplant", which I loved! Quite pricey for my overall bowl, all because I added shrimp (plain). I'd recommend their muso wasabi sauce for dipping and not for salad because it's not watery/creamy enough. I was only disappointed at the shrimp, I feel that did not worth $5 extra. Tight space, weird seating at the windows. Unless you have a super long back, you would awkwardly (low chairs and high table).

Yelp
We were looking for breakfast and stumbled upon this gem. The staff was fantastic with our dietary requests and modified their menu to meet our needs. My son and I had the avocado toast which is amazing and sooo filling. My husband had scrambled eggs which was off menu. Overall, the service was wonderful and the food was top notch. This was exactly what we needed.

Yelp
Vanilla Bean Latte was excellent! I would recommend the breakfast burrito w/ avocado as well!
google avatar

Sophie K.

Yelp
popped in for a quick empanada -- ended up ordering a vanilla latte as well and it turned out to be one of the best latte's I've ever had! I never write reviews but the guy who served me was so nice I had to share. he even let me taste the vanilla bean syrup they have as he was very proud of it--has it sent in from Madagascar! Empanada was phenomenal as well, can't wait to go back for a full breakfast or lunch. super interesting menu.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Tater tot breakfast burrito was killer!! Healthy dose of tots which is essential. Generous portion of avo as well! Really good and the best breakfast burrito I've had in SF!

Yelp
Foundation cafe is definitely worthy of 5 stars! To start off, the cafe is the cutest and the staff is extremely friendly. They have a variety of things on their menu that accommodate vegetarians and vegans and people who love their mean haha! I decided to order the Shake Your Banh Banh (best friend chicken sandwich ) and my friend got one too and substituted it with grilled chicken breast! This place is HEALTHY, ELEGANT, and FRESH! It's a definite go to when you want something light and flavorful. Prices are very reasonable and I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order. I'm glad I bumped into this place and I look forward to coming back again.

Yelp
*BIRD FEATHER IN MY SALAD* Yesterday was my first time at foundation cafe, I ordered through Caviar to save time on my lunch. I ordered the All Kale Caesar, and my coworkers Personal Cheezus. Walked back to my office ate my salad happily with my coworker. 1. salad was good 2. cheap I had a quarter of my salad left until I crunched on something hard, I thought...kale? I crunched on it again and pulled it out of my mouth. It was a bird feather. I walked back upset that i ate nearly all my salad and found something terrifying and unsettling. I talked to a young lady and she apologized, and grabbed Charles, the manager. 1. He didn't even acknowledged me, only handed me a new salad. -after I said I would not like the salad, I would like a refund he apologized and said I would have to call Caviar because I ordered through there. -If I found out a feather was in my customers salad, I WOULD IMMEDIATELY CALL THEM MYSELF. Charles only requested my salad to be refunded. Seriously? I would have refunded my whole order (I ordered my coworkers) 2. He never told me where the feather came from. When I asked he blamed Bi-Rite, and then offered me a free coffee card. after that, I took the salad, bc I was not satisfied or happy and Caviar did reach out. Charles should have told me not to worry about calling Caviar, instead of making me more stressed about the situation. It was not professional how this was handled, I hope future customers will never have to go through this experience.

Yelp
I ordered their avocado toast and added a poached egg on top. I definitely enjoyed how simple, fresh and flavorful it was. It had ricotta cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, and sprinkled sea salt on top of a piece of grilled sourdough levain. All in all, it was $7.25 plus tax. The place is cute and industrial looking inside. I would definitely come back and try out their other foods as well!
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
I keep hearing rave reviews about the avocado toast but have yet to try it...maybe that's why the only two times I've been here the food has been just alright. First time I got the make your own bowl. The ingredients are interesting but for $10 before adding any protein...eh I'll pass for the portion size. Second time I got the California sandwich (turkey, bacon, avo, arugula, green goddess dressing). The sandwich was fresh and on a lil wheat roll. For $11 I was expecting this thing to be loadedd, sadly it was a little more like thinner baguette size and I had to munch on some chips to fill up. Very basic and could find that at a deli for $7 I'm sure... So far it's not a go to place for me but like I said...a few people have raved about the avo toast so I might give that a try and see if that ups my stars!

Yelp
Nice little cafe on popular Kearny Street. There are a couple of tables but mostly it's a place where people who work in the neighborhood get lunch or breakfast to go. They have a selection of sandwiches, soups and salads. Menu selections are centered on fresh food and wholesome selections. They have Four Barrel coffee and Sherpa coffee selections as well. Here are what stands out for me: Breakfast: Avocado Toast ~ super love this with ricotta, olive oil and sea salt on sourdough Cherry Bomb Toast ~ sweet tomatoes, ricotta, sea salt another light healthy option Donut Muffin ~ when you want to indulge Lunch: Como Soy Cubano ~ braised pork, honey ham, bacon, melted swiss on soft roll Goin Back to Cali ~ grilled chicken, bacon, avocado Salads: Steal My Sunshine ~ baby kale, wild arugula, romaine hearts, grilled yellow corn, california avocado, farro, pepitas, house goddess dressing California Donburi ~heirloom brown rice, fried eggplant, avocado, soy-pickled cucumber, green onion, watermelon radish, napa kimchi, sesame seeds, soy ginger dressing I love the look of Foundation with a clean, minimalist appealing space , white subway tile, chalkboards, and reclaimed wood. If you want healthy & nourishing food you can find it here! Four stars!
google avatar

Lori C.

Yelp
Updating my review to 4 to 4.5 stars! My colleague ordered lunch for our office today and I can tell you right away that my CA Donburi Bowl was SO much better this time around! It wasn't overloaded with green onions, the eggplant was nicely fried without being oily, and I added grilled chicken, which was perfectly cooked and flavored. To me, the chicken paired much better with the rest of the ingredients than the shrimp, but either works. By the way, I love the kimchi from here. Can't wait to try more items on their menu!
google avatar

Kristie C.

Yelp
Love the hipster vibe here. Lots of fresh, high quality and healthy options here...though i ordered the wrong thing haha... The food: - $14 bento box salad with shrimp: Shrimp was fresh and well marinated, but there wasn't enough food overall to keep me full. Was definitely eyeing the chicken kale caesar and any of the sandwiches. .. all of which were ~$11 Tip: - packed at lunch but line moves quickly - they serve four barrel coffee here!

Cameron C.

Yelp
WELCOME BACK! Foundation reopened on Kearny Street and it is so great to have them back. The egg sandwich is a little different from before (more savory with spanish jamon and braised greens), but just as delicious. Looks like the have some really tasty new offerings that I can't wait to try. Stop by and support this business! I thought we'd lost them to the pandemic, but they fortunately reopened. Great addition to what once was a great FiDi lunch zone, but which got crushed during Covid. FYI - they now charge an automatic service surcharge, which goes to support the great staff.

Yelp
A very delightful find. We came here a little after 12pm and beat the rush. Line was out the door plus some. The cafe was very charming, love the warm and cozy decor. Super cute place to have lunch with friends or even for a date. My friends and I got: Fried Chicken Banh Mi on a soft roll. Love their sweet-pickled jalapenos. I think the bread could be alil more on the softer side. $10 and comes with a side of pickled veggies. Big Apple Dreamin' SALAD - its with baby kale, arugula, apples, fennel, avocado, house granola, yogurt poppyseed dressing $9 and I added Grilled Chicken $3. the salad was so yummy. I don't prefer lots of dressing, I will ask for less next time. But its delicious. So refreshing and fresh especially with the apples. YUM!! Five-Spice Roasted Cauliflower, ginger pears, sesame. was super good. Very light and tasty. Going to try and make it myself at home.
google avatar

Yelp
I've had a long week. Sometimes on a Friday before work I'll go to my favorite cafe and I'll get my favorite avocado toast (I know very millennial). The woman working there asked me about my weekend plans, but then kept asking me more questions, eventually about work, law school, interests. I'm so stressed with finals coming up and work being so busy, the small things are starting to become overwhelming. Then she wrote a note on my to go box "don't work too hard:. So thank you to that woman, for just making my Friday a bit brighter and putting me in such a good mood. Thank you for being so genuinely kind.
google avatar

Richard B.

Yelp
One of the few places I know of to get something close to a bulletproof coffee other than my kitchen.
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
BEST avocado toast ever. I am terribly addicted. I try to make it the exact same way at home but it's never as perfect and crave-able. Sometimes I have to get 2 orders even though it's a generous size because I can't help myself. Please keep making avocado toast forever. And I wish you would serve it all day! Also get the fried chicken as a side order or salad add on. Perfectly crispy, non greasy and very large filling portion especially for the small price.
google avatar

Monica I.

Yelp
Love me some avocado toast here! The avocados always look perfect and the flavor is super lemony (you can get it without if you're not into the lemony flavor). The sea salt gives it a nice crunch too. I tried making this at home and I couldn't recreate the awesome flavor it has. It's a special treat! The price is on point as well for the amount of avocado they give you! Their staff is super friendly and nice to. If you go there a couple times , they generally remember your name. All my coworkers that go there often say the same thing. I mainly go for breakfast but they have awesome lunch items too. Definitely check it out if you're in the area.
google avatar

Radhika W.

Yelp
They make the best avocado toasts. They're only available for a few hours every morning. Go and grab them. They are really flexible with making salads and sandwiches for lunch. You can easily substitute the ingredients and make your own little lunch.
google avatar

Deb G.

Yelp
Meh. I got a really crappy cold brew and a fig pastry that looked beautiful but had not flavor. Maybe I just picked poorly - my friend liked her mint Sherpa coffee (basically bulletproof coffee) and egg and avocado toast. I would not go back - there are too many other great places in SF.
google avatar

Maurice O.

Yelp
At the recommendation of a co-worker a few of us came in for lunch around 12:30 and there was a bit of a line, however, it moved quickly. I ordered the "Shake Your Bahn Bahn" and also opted for the corn chowder soup. The food came out decently quick despite the amount of people and the staff was very kind. My sandwich was amazing and had a good bit of spice to it which I didn't expect but I really enjoyed. The chowder was okay but a little on the sweet side which I wasn't too fond of. Would definitely check this place out again.
google avatar

Elle W.

Yelp
My go-to place for breakfast in Fidi... the avocado toast is out of this world!! Everything about it is decadent, and here's what I mean: Thick, toasted bread that absorbs the olive oil beautifully. Ricotta gives you a little bit of a creamy texture. Enough avocado to make you feel healthy, and it's sliced in small enough bits that it's easy to bite. Have to add an egg (costs extra)! I get the poached egg, which is such a pleasure to break open and have all that delicious yolk soak right into the bread. Pair that with a Jasmine tea and I'm in heaven!
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
I stopped by here for a lunch during work on a friend's recommendation. When I got here, the place was super crowded and I was wondering if it would live up to the hype. I ordered the California Love sandwich and it was just average. It's a pretty good price point for FiDi, but I feel like there's a lot better sandwiches in the nearby area. Maybe this isn't what they are known for, but I probably won't be back.
google avatar

Robbie P.

Yelp
The staff is so helpful and friendly and the salads are huge! Really they're giant. Okay prices for the city especially considering how large and tasty it is. Get a cookie :)
google avatar

Yelp
This is part of the tidal wave of healthy lunch options saturating the city as of late with tsunami-like ardor. You know the usual suspects by now - Darn Good Food, Market & Rye, Heyday. All of them are upwardly mobile, order-at-the-counter places that focus on local, sustainable and organic ingredients like they were going out of fashion (photo: http://bit.ly/19nKx43). Truth be told, they serve their purpose well for the busy office drone looking for something fast and healthy to make up for that weekend of gluttony, and Foundation Cafe is no exception. Coincidentally, right across the street from Darn Good Food (review: http://bit.ly/19xE0QP) on one of the busiest blocks of Kearny between Bush and Pine, it appears to be thriving during the lunch hour (photo: http://bit.ly/179AwTN). Chef Alex Placencia offers an eclectic mix of salads, sandwiches and soups that all sound and look pretty appetizing (photo: http://bit.ly/12fTqqJ). Although I was tempted by the Barley Mushroom Burger, I went instead for the $11 Chopped Salad with radicchio and endive mixed with crisp shallots, carrots, white beans, green beans, a spritz of vanilla, and shaved Parmesan, all of it lacquered liberally with a lemon mustard vinaigrette. For an extra $3, I had huge chunks and tentacles of Grilled Calamari tossed into the mix, and the result was hearty, healthy eating at least for that day (photo: http://bit.ly/11XvGDG). Porcini-dusted tri-tip and grilled chicken are other protein options. I find the big challenge is finding an empty seat here, so expect to take it to go. FOOD - 4 stars...fresh, abundant salads with plenty of calamari for flavor AMBIANCE - 3 stars...busy, bustling place at lunch SERVICE - 3.5 stars...reasonably efficient TOTAL - 4 stars...I'd go back for anything on that chalkboard menu

Yelp
Foundation is my new go-to coffee spot in FiDi. Why? I'll tell you why. 1. Sherpa Coffee! It's like Bulletproof Coffee, but without the trademark dilemma. It's coffee with coconut oil and grass fed butter, with a little vanilla. If you're keto, just skip the vanilla. They can also add a mint sprig. Yay for my not-Bulletproof-but-still-bulletproof fix! 2. Quality coffee. It's craft-roasted coffee, and it's damn good. 3. Friendly people. I've had some great conversations while waiting for my cuppa. 4. It's preciously hip inside. 5. Interesting food offerings - not just your usual sweet pastries. Legit breakfast stuffs here. Yeah, 5 stars. Easy.

Kristin R.

Yelp
This was my go-to when staying near the financial district for a few weeks. They serve Sightglass coffee, good breakfast, and have friendly and prompt service. They're also open earlier than a lot of the coffee/breakfast cafes nearby, which is puzzling but welcomed. I only tried the avocado toast once and thought it was just alright (I like a high avocado:bread ratio) but the morning oatmeal is pretty great. You can add your own dried fruit, maple, etc. from the oatmeal bar so I guess I'm just a sucker for choice. Either way, $9 total (with tip!) for a large tasty coffee, hefty oatmeal with fixins and a banana is just about all I could ask for at 7am in the city. Would totally go back!

Yelp
TLDR - nothing special plus multiple hairs. Don't get me wrong - the soup was really bomb, as well as the hotsauce. Pro tip; put a few spoonfuls of the hotsauce in the soup to up the flavor a bit. It is pretty oily but that's where a lot of flavor comes The grilled cheese is nothing special, tastes like every other grilled cheese to be frank. My coworker got a hair in his sandwich. I got a hair in my soup. Pretty gross stuff! But to be fair they have better food than my barber shop!

Yelp
Foundation Cafe serves up one of the best morning breakfast sandwiches in the area. Unlike many place that start getting things rolling around 8 AM - Foundation will have you nourished with sustainable fresh morning menu items at an impressive 7 AM. Foundation doesn't serve up the typical microwaved eggs wedged in between a lackluster croissant. Nope - they will serve you culinary eye opening egg-cellence, coated with melted cheddar cheese and nicely complemented with wild argula, roasted garlic aioli. And if you're feeling ambitious - some bacon and avocado. The best part? You can get this magic on top of a buttery biscuit or croissant from Devil's Teeth Baking Company. Looking to avoid gluten? You can get all of the above delicious on gluten free bread. Now that's what's up! In addition to satiating carb-ed up sandwiches - Foundation Cafe also offers up avocado toast, Chia Seed Pudding, D.I.Y. Steel Cut Oatmeal, and a small but formidable selection of baked goods from Devil's Teeth - that include dangerously good donut muffins, scones, and thick slabs of chocolate banana walnut bread. For your sipping pleasure they are well stocked on Four Barrel drinks and even have mastered the Sherpa Coffee (aka Bulletproof coffee) thick with a coconut oil and grass-fed butter foam. I personally stick to their subtle green tea Five Mountains Tea to start my day. The Financial District is painted with mediocre breakfast spots. Treat yourself to an elevated breakfast at Foundation. Trust.

Yelp
Ok so this place is probably the best lunch spot and my coworkers would agree. We probably go here maybe 3-4 times a week, so pretty obsessed. The salads are AWESOME and filling, with flavors that you don't find at Mixt Greens and those chains. They also have specialty items, kind of like a buffet-but-nicer-gourmet type of choices. The prices are good for the area, especially since their food is delicious and fresh. Try the Spanish Bombs salad with grilled shrimp (my fav, I'm biased). Shout out to the awesome friendly staff, Miguel & Chris you guys are stellar! If in the FiDi or anywhere in SF for that matter, come check it out. Just be warned, it does get crowded during lunch :)

Yelp
One of my favorite places for lunch in the downtown SF area. I would call this clean & flavorful food with great ingredients. This is not the cheapest place for lunch but one pays for what one gets. I love the veggie sides that they have (one could mix and match). And the soup that I had today (beef and potato stew) was phenomenal. You think of what your grandma makes in the countryside when you have it. 10X better than the soup kitchen. They recently rolled out "make your own bow" concept, pick one base, three vegetable add-on's, and additional protein add-on. I got the quinoa, with long beans, kale and beans, squash, and adobo chicken. Delicious!!! Free water (with some fruit infused) in a cute cafe layout. (they do need to make the seats a bit taller at the window though). They deserve more visitors!

Yelp
If you're looking for the best avocado toast ever, come here. It's grilled sourdough with ricotta, lemon, avocado (obvs), and I get the egg on top. The coffee is really great. Love the espresso and cold brew. It's great for lunch, too. I love the donburi with the fried eggplant. The only downside is that after a certain time in the AM, I think 11?, you can't get breakfast anymore, meaning you can't get avocado toast. :'(

Yelp
A little cute cafe that is great for lunch. They have a wide variety of sandwiches, salads and small appetizers. Their choices are very different to me, not your plain old things you would order at other cafes, they have their own style and kick to it. I got their California Donburi, it had heirloom brown rice, fried eggplant, avocado, soy-pickled cucumber, green onion, watermelon radish, napa kimchi, sesame seeds, soy ginger dressing. You can add protein such as chicken, shrimp, and beef. It was pretty good, I definitely recommend esp if you are feeling a bit asian fusion. I like their little appetizers such as picked carrots. Definitely recommend for lunch when you in the fidi area!
