Fox and Lion Bread

As a vegetarian, finding a good veggie sammy is like striking gold. The Green Dream sammy is SO good that I will make any excuse to pop by and grab one (sometimes multiple times per week!). The team here clearly care about making great baked goods and food and it shows in the quality of everything they make. If you are looking for a solid neighborhood staple bakery, Fox and Lion is it.

This is actually my perfect cafe. Food is DELICIOUS and I'm grateful for the litany of vegan options that are high quality and unique; they didn't feel like an afterthought at all. I came in expecting one sandwich option and was so happy to see that they've just expanded the menu and now have several more vegan sandwiches! Additionally, I would normally reject a cheeseless pizza but after trying a delicious sandwich I decided to give it a chance and I'm SO glad I did--it's all in the crust!! So good!! The atmosphere is super cozy and welcoming and the service was lovely. I love that it is open later than other cafes as well. This is definitely going to be my new go-to spot!

High quality, owner-operated local bakery — with freshly baked loaves, savory pastries and pizzas. Easily, a meal and not just a snack. The passion and attention-to-detail is demonstrated in every tasty morsel.

Literally the best sandwich in the world. Perfectly baked bread that was slightly crunch and soft in the middle, fresh lettuce and the tang of dijon paired perfectly with the roasted peppers and the cheese was exquisitely delicious with the fresh salami. I have eaten this sandwich every time I go and they never disappoint. Will forever be raving about Fox and Lion!

Came in for a sandwich in the evening. The pastrami was super rubbery and there was hardly any sauerkraut. A big disappointment.

All in all my favorite sandwich in the city. The food and service at Fox and Lion feel completely down to earth yet still full of passion, and the price is great. I find it really standing out in a city full of over-priced, highly-marketed restaurants. The sandwich is gourmet quality while the price tag is very approachable. The ingredients are visibly very fresh, the baked-in-house bread is always excellent, the sauce and olive oil really elevate the presentation and taste. My favorite is their Janga's Club the very friendly lady at the shop recommended it to me the first time I visited here after a long run. Is it BIG! A three-decker stacked with lots of turkey, salami, cheese, and veggies, it tastes fresh and flavorful, and definitely satisfied my huge and eager appetite. I keep coming back to Fox and Lion even though now I don't live in SF anymore. Whenever I'm on my way from the airport to the city I'll try to stop by. It's such a pleasure to have their sandwich in my hands and to know that I'll have a blast. Last visit: September 2021

This place is a little slice of heaven. Wonderful atmosphere, cheerful service, and good variety of food to choose from. It feels like a charming European cafe.

love this place, flavors and service are all 5 stars. Just went vegan and they have some of the best vegan options for food in the SF, especially the super salad. As a SF native I'm extremely proud to have a great lunch spot like this in my community. good food, good peeps, great service!!

Zimmerman Sandwich The sandwich consists of a unripe olive oil, which adds a grassy flavor, textural crunch from the lettuce, thick slice of turkey, and the creaminess from the avocado. This is all sandwiched in between bread, which was a bit hard to chew but I like the flavor of the bread. The seasoning was well balanced from the freshness of the lettuce, avocado, and olive oil, the savoriness from the turkey and additional salt and pepper. I got this to go, so the service was fast in preparing the sandwich. Worth it.

Had the green dream and it was delicious. All the flavors melded so well together. The sandwich was large and filling. Service was great. A ton of veg/vegan options and a cute spot for a quick lunch!

There aren't many places left in SF where you can get a sandwich under $10, but Fox & Lion Bread delivers a great sandwich for just $9 (as of May 2024). I got the famous turkey sandwich for $9, and while there might be more gourmet sandwiches in the city, this is definitely one of the best quality/price sandwiches around. As you might expect from a bakery, the bread is fresh (an absolute must for a good sandwich), and it was surprisingly big for just $9. They even included roasted red peppers, which are often an extra charge at other places. I only wish they included tomatoes and spinach for no extra charge, but it's understandable given the base price of the sandwich is only $9. It would be easy to miss this place if you're not looking for it (there is not much signage out front), but with delicious sandwiches, pizza, baked goods, and more for reasonable prices, this is a place worth seeking out. You can also order and pay ahead online - I did this and my order was ready within 15 minutes during peak lunch time on a Friday.

Excellent sandwiches, pizza, salads and cookies! It's located on a not so clean area of the mission, we almost missed the shop since it is very unassuming from the outside, almost looked more like a convenience store entrance with graffiti Small bare bones interior with a couple of tables The sandwiches are great- made with fresh bread, packed with delicious ingredients. I loved the Mary's with the cooked bell peppers and melted cheese. My husband loved his green dream- I didn't like the tapenade sauce, but he loved it. Sometimes sandwich/pizza shops don't have the best salads- but my Nico's salad was huge, with tons of colorful toppings- I was happy with it If you're wondering whether to get the cookies at the counter, the answer is yes! Their freshly baked cookies are a must!

This is a great place to grab a sandwhich or slice of square pizza. The variety of sandwiches all were great and the pizza was super tasty. The staff gave great recommendations and customized our orders. There are only a few seats so its best to get take out but its a good spot in a fun and clean neighborhood in San Francisco. Also, if you got kids then ask for chocolate milk. Its awesome! ! !

Had to also add that I've come back several times for their avocado toast and vegan cinnamon rolls and they're the best in the city!

Awesome new bakery. The fact that I just had avocado toast with delicious olive oil, fancy sea salt, perfectly ripe avocados and house made bread for $6 has me in shock. I didn't think it was legal to charge San Franciscans under $15 for avocado toast. What a deal. The bagels and cinnamon roll were a total delight and I love that they have Proyecto Diaz coffee, truly one of my favorite local purveyors. Staff is very friendly and takes time to give you the details. Small cozy seating area, warm hipstery vibe but without pretentiousness. Will definitely be back.

Love this spot! It's got a cute indoor space with tables and even though I got my sandwich to-go, I could see hanging out in the future. They sell coffee and also alcohol but I did not get a drink. Service was super friendly and kind; I felt instantly comfortable. I ordered the New Orleans and also got a chocolate chip cookie. The sandwich was so fresh and had a very homemade taste. The bread was amazing and the flavor of the sandwich was delish. I want to try all the sandwiches on the menu, especially the green dream and egg salad. The cookie was soft and moist and perfect. This part of the mission is not wonderful but it's worth it for these sandwiches! Parking is sporadically available but beware of break-ins. Might want to park on Valencia St and walk over.

VEGAN REVIEW: this morning I google searched for "vegan cinnamon roll SF" - how did I not know this place is in my neighborhood before now?! The cinnamon roll was so good I gobbled it up before getting a photo. Great coffee too. Then I stuck around long enough get lunch hungry and the Green Dream did not disappoint - fresh bread and deliciously unique ingredients made this vegan tummy very happy! All at very reasonable prices. Also can't wait to try some of the cans of unique craft beers they have in the fridge. This cafe has a very chill vibe and friendly folks, there's wifi and you can hang out and get some work done with sun streaming in the wall of south facing windows. This is a new favorite spot for me!

We love Fox and Lion Bread. The fresh bread is amazing, the sandwiches are great (they bake bread there daily, and everyone knows the secret to a great sandwich is great bread!). The baked goods (especially cinnamon rolls and chocolate chip cookies) are really good. Staff is really friendly. There are nice windows and tables to sit out if you want to eat there, afternoon light is really pleasant. Thank you!

Fox and lion is a great cozy space in the mission right off 18th and mission street!! All the staff are so friendly and they have great lattes here!! I have had the green dream which is a really good and filling vegan option the baguette is so good!!! And their vegan cinnamon roll is also super yummy but i definitely recommend an oat milk latte with honey it's always yummy

Cute environment, nice style and menu and chill SF style vibe. Tuna sandwich pretty good, veggie one excellent! We'll be back

Sadly the super salad was skimpy, not even a normal serving of lentils, two slices of avocado, a sprinkle of kraut and literally barely a tablespoon of hummus.. $14 for a salad that had barely any toppings- all greens. I wanted to like this place but sadly it's not worth it given the really small portions and price point :(

Cute little sandwich/coffee shop tucked away in the Mission. I had the Mary's sandwich and it was so so good. I added tomato. I want to come back and try out some of the other sandwiches. Some of them are so interesting, and I bet the salads are good too. They have an eclectic selection of craft beers and sodas. The employees were super nice. When I went in there was the cutest scene of several senior ladies enjoying coffee and bagels while chatting. Seemed like their hangout spot. Who doesn't love a Golden Girls vibe? Yep, I'll be back to test out other sandwiches, although it will be hard not to order the Mary's.

I hereby declare it the best sandwich in San Francisco. Her bread is amazing too, and that's saying something if you are only a few blocks from Tartine.

There are lots of vegan options, and the food is fresh -- even the bread is made there every day. I admire the commitment it takes to start up and run a bakery (or any small business in SF). Making bread has got to be long hours, starting early in the morning. The place is clean and comfortable, and you can see everything being prepared. Oh and the prices are reasonable! I wish the outside were even nicer so folks would be tempted to walk in for the first time -- then they could grow. Because I want Fox and Lions everywhere all across town!! PS: The owner is way cute.

Great place, and great variety. The country loaf is delicious, and all the prices are really fair. A nice addition to the neighborhood. You can also get some of their bread to go at the Mission mercado on Thursdays.

The frittata sandwich was very generous and extremely delicious (highly recommend adding the ham as an extra). They make all their bread from scratch and you see them baking bread while running their restaurant. They only use the best and freshest ingredients. Can't wait to come back and try their pizza. The staff are very friendly! Grateful to be able to support a small locally owned business.

Wow. I got a basic $10 sandwich and it's fantastic. I think it's the quality of the bread that's notable.

The sandwiches are uniquely delicious. So far I've tried the Terry's Veggie, the Green Dream, and the Mary's Special. Also the baguette. All are very reasonably priced and so good, plus the service is friendly and efficient. Looking forward to trying more of their breads, sandwiches, salads, pizzas, pastries, etc.!

Came here a few days ago looking for a quick bite. Got their vegan cinnamon rolls, was so good. Very cozy place and friendly staff. Love how they make their bread in house. Will come back soon to try their sandwiches

such a great place!! And great prices. Best tuna sandwich I've ever had truly! I think it even has pickled celery in it?! So, so good. Their famous turkey sandwich is also amazing. Tons of pescetarian, vegetarian, vegan options. Also mushroom lattes! Go here you'll love it!

Excellent New York-style bagels! They are so dense and chewy. Definitely my new favorite bagel place. And their other pastries are so delicious without being overly sweet. Highly recommend!

Just had prolly the biggest club sando of my life. Bread was amazing and had the perfect combo of crunch and softness. Primo meats, cheese and crispy veg made this sando so tasty, and more than enough for two people. Very impressed with this new addition to the hood and can't wait to try the pastries and pizza!

Whenever I travel to San Francisco, Fox & Lion is always on my must stop to eat at list! Over the years, starting at their old location, I've had a little bit of everything (coffee, cocoa, sandwiches, cookies, & most importantly the loaves of bread), and all has been great! I hope to return soon. Highly recommend!

I stopped by Fox and Lion's new location in the Mission last week. I frequented the bakery when it was in Bayview and really loved their pizza. I hadn't really tried their sandwiches before. So this time I tried the Zimmerman sandwich and wow-it was great! The bread was amazing-fresh, tasty, a little crispy but not hard on the teeth. The ingredients were wonderful together (I added pickles and Calabrian chilies). It was the best sandwich I've had in a while and I will definitely be back.

Great food at reasonable prices. Their sandwiches come on fresh bread and the ingredients are quality. You'd be hard pressed to find a spot where you can get a sandwich, chips and cortado for under $20 other than this one. They also have a rewards system if you spend enough, definitely gonna be coming here quite a bit

Wish they had vegan cheese for the pizza. The pepperoni on the "vegan" pizza was good. Update: they have vegan mozzarella :)

Often in the neighborhood and Fox and Lion is the perfect place to grab a cup of joe, a sandwich, a freshly baked baguette for your avocado toast, or a pizza to be heated for dinner later...whatever it is, everything is just so darn good. Highly recommend the Green Dream sandwich--marinated artichokes, sliced roasted potatoes, balsamic onions, avocado, and lettuce on a baguette slathered with green olive tapenade, mustard, and chili oil. Omnomnomz for days... Xan is such a presence that it's almost inevitable that Fox and Lion will be more than San Francisco's best kept secret and explode into the scene. You heard it here first. Bonus: check out their t-shirts. How cute are they?! Someone get me one, small please. =)

we've been wanting to come by since the beautiful mural started going up and today i ran in for a potato, onion, artichoke stuffed dough. it was great. glad they're here and will definitely be back!

Sweet new spot that I believe moved to the Mission from its original location in the Bayview. Feels like its been in the neighborhood for years, has super reasonable prices, and plenty of seating. Offers several vegan options from pizza to sandwiches to cinnamon rolls. Pizza crust is the perfect combo of crisp on the outside-chewy inside and loved the potatoes on top which you don't see often. Also enjoyed a grassy nettles iced tea from their Mushroom and Adaptogen Tonics menu. Friendly staff and dreamy blue-grass music were a huge pluses. Get yourself over to Fox and Lion!

I had a break in between work and was looking for a coffee shop to get some work done and get a quick snack. There were no coffee shops in the area coming up on Yelp (there was a Peet's but it was in a supermarket so that doesn't count), so it was great to see this one come up! It's on a main street but it's a wider, quieter street than other parts of San Francisco so it was easy to get you. There was free parking around the coffee shop which made the positive experience (so much of a San Francisco is finding parking, so finding a spot within 10 seconds was exciting). It was in the afternoon, super mellow and we were served quickly. I ordered the house iced cold lemonade- it was so refreshing and delicious! The only thing is it's pretty small for the cost and a lot of the glass cup is filled with ice. There were homemade croissants being made for the next morning which looked delicious, and I loved how they were making it where we can watch. Overall, great coffee shop and I'd love to come back and try their food items (pizzas, salads, sandwiches) and hopefully can have a larger lemonade with less ice!

Great place to get your daily bread in more than one way...great food and fellowship! The service is always great. Xan is great and her coworker is on top of it....you can get in and out a quick as you want. The ambiance is nicely remodeled.

I go in here frequently. There are only a couple of good sandwich places in the neighborhood and one is really expensive (Chuck's Takeaway - From Slanted Door). I always get the sandwiches because I love the bread. It's the only decent bread maker in the Mission. There are places you can get Acme. This bread is great for sandwiches. I like the chocolate chip cookies as well.

Fox and Lion has some of the most unique house made breads I've ever found. The toast loaf is amazing and I usually buy two to freeze one for later. They also have a great selection of specialty grocery items to stock up on. Highly recommend stopping in for a bagel or pastry for breakfast and taking a loaf home to make toast.

Today I had the best frittata sandwich and coffee at this instant neighborhood favorite. Can't wait to come back and try something new!

Was working in the Bay Area for a few days and my fiancé told me to look at this menu as he was going to bring me lunch. He got me the Nicos original salad!! Omg the salad was amazing!! Can't wait to visit again soon.

My first impression: horrible customer service. I walked in and was curious about their bakery. I'm new to the area and wanted know how long they've been around. I asked a few normal questions- trying to spark a friendly conversation. In response, the owner was extremely standoffish and short with me. I did not feel welcome at all, there was no warm greeting when I entered but her demeanor changed dramatically when my wife came in (who is white) They gave her a menu but never offered one to me. After I decided I didn't want the menu I went back to return it so I didn't waste it and when I walked in the owner was saying "why does it matter how long we've been here". Pretty rude. We will not be back. Why would you react negatively to a black man entering your business when your business is in a black neighborhood?

Been coming here at least once a week since discovering this place. Top notch pizza, the crust is absolutely delicious. Have tried the half sheet and the pie, and personally the square pizzas are what hits the spot, maybe there's something nostalgic about the square ones as it brings back memories of school pizza. Parking here is easy enough, but call ahead so you don't have to wait around.

LOVE their bread!!! I live in San José but I try to stop by every time I come to SF to grab at least 2 loaves of their delicious bread. Ordering is easy online, it's always ready and Xan is a sweet heart! Thank you so much!!!!

Fox and lion bread has some fresh and delicious food. I personally like the bread and my son's favorite pizza is from there. Xan works very hard to please her customers. She's passionate and you can see it/taste it on the food she serves.

The sandwich menu here is unconstitutionally delicious!! Everything sounds amazing. I ordered the tuna melt and the egg salad on avocado toast, mushroom mocha - all absolutely delightful! *pro-tip: they have day old baked goods for $1! And they still taste fresh and amazing!

I ordered the Nico's Salad bc the photos on Yelp reviews looked so good! I was already drooling over since two days ago when I stumbled upon it. Unfortunately, it wasn't very fresh bc the avocado was brownish and mushy with the woody black top of the avocado inside my salad, the romaine lettuce was soggy and dark, and I also bit into some sand...

I love this spot! Located on the ever-bustling 3rd street this cafe & sandwich spot is perfect for running in before work or during my lunch break. Their mushroom tea is great! Definitely a must-try dirty-chai. I love their sandwiches too! Can't go wrong with a turkey, egg or avocado sandwich! I also collect stars for every $5 I spent. I use these stars to collect free rewards like $5 off your next purchase or a free sandwich!

Just tried the Fancy Pants sandwich for the first time. Prosciutto, goat cheese, grilled onions, lettuce and apple slices on a chewy baguette - YUMMY!

First time here. Ordered an iced coffee only to find out it was $6. It was small and ... fine. Mostly ice and just ... way too expensive. I can't afford to come back here

Best Pizza and bread in San Francisco. Square pizza is having its moment and Fox and Lion has the best in town. Incredible loaves to go and sandwiches and salads as well. Highly recommended for a neighborhood place as well as destination for those in search of great sourdough and pizza.
