"I discovered an overlooked corner of the Mission District is getting a colorful, yeast-scented bakery when Fox and Lion Bread opens its first dedicated shop on 18th and Capp. Founded by former bartender Xan Devoss, the business grew from a sourdough CSA–style pickup nine years ago and seven years of shared kitchen space in the Bayview to this standalone location; Devoss favors a warm, active levain (a French-style preferment) over the cold, liquid starters popularized by places like Tartine. The menu will include her loaves (about $7), bagels, pizzas, an expanded salad menu and sandwiches aimed around $10 with add-ons like bacon or extra cheese pushing some items nearer $20. The space features a fire-engine-red counter and a coffee bar serving East Bay roaster Proyecto Diaz espresso, and a corner-wrapping mural by Pablito of a girl surrounded by California poppies; she passed final inspection March 15 and debuts March 29 with projected hours 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Saturday–Sunday, while continuing Haight Street pick-ups and her Mission Mercado installation." - Paolo Bicchieri
