"Spicy Mexican in the Arts District Tucked amongst the galleries in downtown Scottsdale’s art district, Frank & Lupe’s is a charming hacienda with delectable, down-home Mexican food. Its shaded back patio is one of the best places to sip ice-cold Tecate or margaritas on a nice day. No doubt one of the restaurant’s shining stars is the carne adobada burrito plate, a warm tortilla wrapped around pork marinated in red chili sauce, vinegar and oregano. It’s on the spicier side, but a nice dollop of sour cream balances it out nicely."

Friendly staff from the moment we walked in the door. The homemade chips & salsa immediately told me I'm in for a real treat! The food was excellent. Since I was new to the restaurant, I ordered the combination plate & my wife ordered the soft shell tacos. Super flavors & the sopapillas that came with the combination plate were homemade and delicious.

Nothing angers me more than dishonesty… this place is lowest of the low… they have a menu outside the front door, easy to read proclaiming a happy hour with 50% off appetizers, $4.50 beer, $20 margarita pitcher and $8 large margarita. We shopped for an hour and came back for the happy hour… we were seated and handed a menu with 20% off appetizers, $5 beers, a $12 large margarita and no price for a pitcher - we were told by the waiter it’s $30 for a pitcher during happy hour. I brought this up to the waiter and he claimed he has repeatedly told the owner to change it but he hasn’t yet… look at the photos you can see they whited out prices and changed them. We had a beer each and left. Just be honest and admit you are shady! Hope this place goes out of business!

This is a “hidden gem” !! I am letting visitors to Scottsdale in on the secret … Situated right smack in the middle of “old town” Scottsdale, this Mexican Restaurant has its own parking ( hard to come by on Scottsdale) andthe warmest friendliest waiters of all time !! But perhaps more important to you if you are looking for tasty authentic Mexican Food is the quality of their food !!! Oh my gosh !!! Heaven to a Canadian who only has Taco Bell to compare it to!! The food here makes my mouth water all the way from Canada !! I start imagining the complimentary chips and salsa before I even board the plane . Their entree’s ( incredibly priced ) and absolutely yummy!! We really enjoy everything about Frank and Lupe’.

Overall, it was a great experience for authentic Mexican food, atmosphere, and service. Had our lunch on the patio, nothing fancy, but enjoyed the sunshine and the birds chirping! They have private parking too, which is a bonus.

Frank & Lupe’s is exactly what you want in a classic Mexican spot—no frills, just great food, solid drinks, and an easygoing vibe. The enchiladas were flavorful, the chips and salsa kept coming, and the margaritas were strong (in a good way). We sat outside on the patio, which has that cozy, colorful Southwestern feel—perfect for a relaxed evening. Service was friendly and fast. If you’re craving traditional Mexican food in a laid-back setting, this place hits the spot. Definitely coming back.

Service is delightful. Their food is delicious, especially Teddy's Carne Asada Burrito.

Was here with my buddy from back home in St. Louis joined by our Scottsdale host. Our local host hadn’t been here before and was excited to visit. We opted to eat on the patio out back. The wind was fairly strong that night and the design of the patio area was essentially a wind tunnel. Beyond that the space was very fun. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Kept up with drinks and helped us make our meal decisions. Our food was super yummy and I’d gladly return.

I began to drive it was interesting taco Tuesday I thought I would go and take my hawt date 🌹 to Hulas witch is amazing but they were packed so I accidently took a right turn trying to get to Coaches and VWalla this little old Mexico looking place appeared like a shiny pearl that fell out of a Conch Shell I. Decided to go in I ordered the Carnitas the inside reminded me of My Nannas Cocina growing up when the Carnitas arrived it brought back memories of when I was kid playing in my Nannas Chile garden and her calling the Carnitas is ready ! It Melted in the mouth like butter the perfection that this was cooked to was astonishingly incredible absolutely but don't take my word for it get lost in Scottsdale one day !

Yelp
I went to Frank and Lupes today for the first time in well over a year since I don't live in Arizona anymore. We had seen a lot of bad reviews saying the service and food had gone down hill. My experience there today brought me back to when I first started going there 15 years ago. The service was quick, they have blue corn tortillas again, the food came out super fast and really hot and it all tasted amazing like it always did. I can't wait to go back there again next time I'm in town. Thanks for a great experience again.

Yelp
We have been long time fans of the long running mom & Pop New Mexican restaurant nestled in the Beautiful allure of Old Town Scottsdale. We stopped here after spending the day with our son at the Mayo Hospital. This is a small locals favorite & Old Town shoppers refueling stop. The private parking lot is a postage stamp with one handicap space. There is ample road side parking however this entire area is beaming with shoppers enjoying everything the quaint shopping and eating destinations offer. The restaurant is an old original building that existed as Old Town great up around it. Ambiance is dated and decorated is the colors of the Sonoran SW. Seating is limited. Menu Favorite New Mexico style dishes. Wife chose the Green Chili Chicken and I change up from my typical and tried the New Mexico red Chilies Rellenos with beans. Both were good! Best part is I ate my wife's leftovers LOL. Service Our server was attentive and friendly. If your in the area and enjoy or are curious about New Mexico style food give the a try. Off peak times is my recommendation. $$

Yelp
Great Mexican dive bar / restaurant. The menu is full of unique and delicious options. Wait staff is helpful and engaging. Not your run-of-the-mill Mexican food restaurant. Lot's of character and well-worn in an awesome way. Don't bring your first date here, but after you've decided she's the one this will be your go-to Mexican bar / restaurant hangout. There are plenty of other hoity toity places to go to in Scottsdale. This is not one of them. Laid back, relaxed, fun and did I say casual? Portion sizes are of a generous size and the drinks are great.

Yelp
The ambience is unmatched! Such a cute outdoor patio and SO COLORFUL. The food also melted in my mouth. This place gives such mom and pop shop vibes and is an excellent choice if you're looking for some good authentic Mexican food in Scottsdale

Yelp
Food here is terrific! I think they're understaffed so service is hit and miss. Last week was a complete miss.

Yelp
THE BEST SALSA!! Really good service and clean restaurant. Had the shrimp fajitas, yummy! Love this place.

Yelp
Located in Old Town, Frank and Lupe's Old Mexico restaurant offers down to earth family staples. The interior is rustic cute and the patio, at a peak, looked fun and inviting. We started chips and salsa and the nachos (it was half priced at Happy Hour). Good portion size for the nachos and I loved the amount of cheese, sour cream and guacamole offered. So happy with the nachos. My friend and I both had the Combination Plate ($17.00): Tamale, rolled enchilada, taco, rice, beans and 2 sopaipillas. Our lunch was tasty and not salty. Really enjoyed the tamale. My friend added the Chile Relleno for an additional $3.00 and it was well worth it. Our other friend had the soft chicken taco platter and said it was delicious. They had a few parking spaces on site but we parked our car on the street which is free for 3 hours.

Yelp
We needed some food after a wine tasting at Salvatore Vineyards and Amari recommended Frank and Lupe s Mexican restaurant. We walked two short blocks down this beautiful artsy area of Scottsdale Arizona. It was a Monday night and the place was almost empty but that changed quickly. By time we left the place was packed. Our drink order was taken right away but we sadly passed on margaritas this evening due to the wine tasting. We were brought chips and a spicy salsa. I ordered #1 which included a taco, cheese enchilada and a tamale with beans and rice. The food was very good but the red sauce was too picate for me. My dinner companion ordered #8 which was a chicken enchilada with green avocado sauce which was not spicy also served with rice and beans The #1 also came with sopes for dessert. We really enjoyed the meal and due to the crowd I'm sure the other items are just as delicious.

Yelp
Fantastic is all I can say. They've been in business for over 30 years and you can taste the authenticity in their food! This is New Mexican style cuisine and it is absolutely delicious! The ambiance was great (sat on the patio) and my server, Michelle, was delightful. She kept me very entertained as I dined alone that day (I was on a business trip). I ordered the sopapilla with carne asada and I was not disappointed lol! I am hoping to come again before my trip concludes. If not, on the next one! Great job to the team here!

Yelp
Came here last night and service was somewhat slow but they get a little leeway since we had a large table. The chips and salsa was quite good and my chile relleno was good although it wasn't entirely what I expected. Where things really fell apart was with the check. They added a gratuity of 30%. My friend, whose birthday we were celebrating and formerly a server, flipped out and made them change it. She also notified the other large table in our group to have them change it as well. We were not loud, we were not demanding and we did not burden our server with extra effort aside from having to serve more people. Evaluating the service as it was, a 10-15% tip would have been appropriate even though I generally tip 20% no matter what. 30% is outrageous and I have dined in Old Town with large groups before and have never ever been charged that much.

Yelp
Really a 2.5 Happy Hour menu: margaritas yummy and strong, ceviche very good packed with shrimp and large portion, mini taquitos: beef flavorful but chicken dry and flavorless, nachos were acceptable but meatless. Unfortunately the carne as asada in the burrito and tacos was subpar lacking any flavor. Huge disappointment in a Mexican restaurant. The price tag on this did not match the poor quality. Very cute outdoor seating and fun vibe. I cannot recommend unless you are just coming for drinks and appetizers. ~EG Eats

Yelp
I feel bad for the family that has run this restaurant for generations. The food could be good if they served it hot. But the service was so bad it was like they tried to do everything possible to screw up. Big party auto gratuity so why actually make the experience good even if it's a $500 plus bill? I asked my wife why we never eat there because I love Mexican food and cantina theme places. The. I found her one star review from three years ago and I remembered the complete incompetence that day When you ask to talk to the manager you realize that he is serving tables and part of the problem Shame that a legacy like this is so terrible but then again it takes work to have three stars on Yelp Please do not support this place they don't deserve your money

Yelp
Wow the food was excellent. The customer service was very good. Loved everything about it. I think if you are looking for some authentic amazing Mexican food then come here it's amazing. The decor in the place was authentic as well. Overall a A+

Yelp
This will definitely become a go to Mexican restaurant for me. This tiny spot hidden in old town Scottsdale has some great food and service. It was pretty empty when we arrived but the service was great. Nachos were loaded and the entrees were a great size. Everything is made to order so if you need to customize anything they are more than accommodating. The sopaipillas came with one of the meals which was a nice treat!

Kevin H.

Yelp
This was a yelp find and in my opinion, it is way underrated at 3 stars. We had great food, excellent service and beautiful atmosphere out on the patio. My family raved about it as well. We'll definitely remember this place the next time we're in Scottsdale!
google avatar

Yelp
This is some of the freshest Mexican food I've had in a long time. Perfectly located in Old Town Scottsdale, the service here is welcoming and casual, like the decor. If I were local, I'd make this a regular stop.
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
This is a tale of two restaurants. One with authentic New Mexico mexican recipes and the other with awful service. Went back recently and service improved a little. Here's hoping that's a trend line up.

Yelp
Happened upon this place while looking for some grub this afternoon. All the usual brunch places were packed so we drove around the little backstreets and saw this place with an open parking spot right out front. What are the chances? So we parked and walked in. We were seated right away and were given menus, chips and salsa almost immediately. Served took drink and food order. Food took quite a while to come out. There weren't many other people there. I only point this out since I saw some comments about slow service. I will say that the food did taste incredibly fresh, so I don't mind waiting a little longer for fresh food and ingredients. We will be back. The carne asada burro with green poblano sauce was amazing. I asked for red chile sauce on the side and I'm so glad that I did! It was MUY CALIENTE and I would not have been able to eat it if it had come out with sauce all over the top.

Yelp
Good spot for an outdoor drink and taco! We love this spot for an outdoor meal with a relaxed vibe. The tamales never disappoint and service is quick and reliable. Can't go wrong with a Paloma and chips and salsa.

Yelp
Tonight, my wife tried to find the restaurant she visited one year ago. She was mistaken it was Frank & Lupe's. The restaurant she remembers was good. Unfortunately this place fails on a couple of levels. We arrived at 7 ish on taco Tuesday and no one was in restaurant. They had music and lights which provided a feel of Mexico. Should have known right away there was trouble. We were seated promptly and then water with chips and salsa. Super! But then the waiter disappeared. I mean disappeared, gone, no where to be found. So I searched and found our waiter. We ordered Cadillac margaritas and split steak fajitas. The margaritas were ok. The fajitas at best were terrible. They decided to cut the meat into tiny squares. Without a spoon it was tough to put on tortilla. But the lack of taste made it worse AND they used no onion or peppers to cook the steak. AND the condiments of rice, beans tomatoes and guacamole were very small. They didn't offer cheese or sour cream with our fajitas. The price seemed proper however truly not worth anything it was so bad. Sorry to say I'm crossing this one off my list. Will not return.

Yelp
Bland tacos, no seasoning on the fish and nothing fresh on the plate. Nothing to write home about but the portion was large.
google avatar

Taylor C.

Yelp
The BEST Mexican food in all of Old Town Scottsdale. Fast, friendly service. The margaritas are always great. The best chips & salsa. I always get the poblano cream chicken enchiladas or a taco salad and it never disappoints. It can sometimes get crowded here, but it's worth the wait if there is one!

Yelp
Bad night, zero service, Avoid! I have been a customer of this restaurant for years. We had some out of town friends come in and we went there for dinner on Veterans Day evening around 6pm and there was a special event in the area a few blocks away. The restaurant wasn't busy, but there was only 1 person working that was doing everything (wait, bartend, cook?). We patiently waited for 30 minutes and gave up. When I went to the server to take our order, I got some bad attitude and was disrespected. We will never come back. An employee can damage your brand and reputation quite easily. If a restaurant isn't properly staffed for dinner, maybe the decision should of been made to close for the evening. The good news, is we found an outdoor venue that was significantly better that put the C in customer service.
google avatar

Nina P.

Yelp
The place was honestly the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten. Everything was painfully bland and was severely lacking any seasoning. There was no salt on the chips, the salsa was like tomato water, and the guacamole was basically just a mashed up avocado. The only plus side of this place was that the staff was friendly.

Patrick H.

Yelp
Place is pretty cool but overall experience was not very good. We had to ask for napkins and were told they didn't have many. What is that. When they did bring some they brought two for a table of four. My meal was ok but the fajitas came out on a lukewarm, at best, cast iron and were not hot. Chicken had very little seasoning.
google avatar

Salim Z.

Yelp
The food was great, again, I love the atmosphere and the service. I I had the tacos last time they were amazing. Chicken quesadilla was great too. Thank you.

Michele C.

Yelp
Visited this restaurant with a group of 10. We were seated immediately. Orders were taken quickly. Drinks and food were delivered quickly. Three orders were incorrect. Cheese crisp did not have meat as ordered. One taco salad that was ordered with steak was served with ground beef but was charged for steak. Tacos, taco salad, and carnitas were all delicious. Spanish rice was unseasoned. Multiple tickets could not be accommodated as per the menu which may cause difficulty for those on business trips. There was an extra $2.50 charge for additional ketchup beyond the tablespoon that was served without warning or explanation. Food was mostly tasty but service was problematic. Would not recommend or return.

Mike O.

Yelp
Service very poor. They forget you're even there. And when you ask for something they don't bring it. Food was really bad. How do you mess up Mexican food. Probably the worst I've ever had in my life. I couldn't eat it. Either could my friend.

Ric L.

Yelp
EVERYTHING ! This place needs to be sold and out of the food business. Its dated and It's completely of it's league to be located in Scottsdale. There's Nothing of it's food selection that's worth ordering. It's cold and old and right out of a can. Ie: beans were horrible and cold. Service is nonexistent here other than being told to sit down and we will consider serving you . No seat No Drink ! That's an order ! WTF ? High School orders ??? Nope I won't comply and wouldn't pay any money to this place and will never mention this place to ANYONE !

Yelp
I like that this place has a laid-back and decidedly non-fancy atmosphere, while being surrounded by the often hoity-toity feel of most places in Scottsdale. As another reviewer said, you need to go out the back and through the garden patio for a restroom! But don't let that hold you back from coming here for an authentic Mexican meal. The fact that a place like this has been around for so long, without opting for some kind of fancy upgrades, suggests some really great continuity, community-building, and giving a feel for the name of the place - Old Mexico. As an added touch, the garden patio is really nicely decorated with a Dia de Los Muertos feel all around. Food was solid - I got a fajitas platter and it was delicious. The chips and salsa were memorable. Nice crispiness, just enough salt, and they didn't leave my hands ultra greasy. Service was a bit slow, but the place was quite busy on a Saturday, which is very understandable. One issue here is that if you come here with food allergies, you're on your own. The menu suggests you talk to your server about any allergies, but the typical response is that they 'can't be sure' or 'can't be responsible.' And I felt that as a direct result of those statements, your server won't care to remember your issue or do anything about it. As one example, I have a gluten problem so I asked for corn tortillas with my food - they came out with flour tortillas. I had to ask for corn ones. It took almost 7 minutes after asking to get new tortillas. That should take a few seconds, not 7 minutes. Maybe the server was busy and overwhelmed, but it's not like I was asking for a whole new plate of food. It's just grabbing another thing of tortillas, which they keep pre-wrapped in the back. My final complaint is that they skimp on their tortillas. I already had to "send back" the flour tortillas, and then the server came out with 2 tortillas. For an $18 fajita plate. I asked for more tortillas and I got one. Bottom line, come here for the feel. Come here when you've got time and patience, especially if it's the weekend. I think that "feel" also translates into service that's honest but not at your beck and call. And do not come here if you're worried about your allergies.

Yelp
We really loved this place. The food was amazing, the service was prompt and friendly, and the portions were huge. I got the chimichanga and absolutely loved it. We sat on the patio; enjoying the Arizona December weather -- back in Michigan, there was snow on the ground. Should my travels bring me back to Scottsdale, I am definitely coming back.

Yelp
Everything and every person is always creating this family owned restaurant to be a 10/10. Every single time! Food is amazing Service is friendly and amazing each time Love Frank & Lupe's

Yelp
TL;DR come here after hiking camelback; you will not regret it! Food (5/5) - Got really mixed reviews for this place from my friends, heard that quality varies a lot across the menu. Get the mole enchiladas / mole anything; never had anything quite like this and prices are pretty in line for Old Town. The sauce is flavourful with a sweet aftertaste, evens out the really well spiced (and spicy!) chicken; no cracking in the enchiladas and the cheese was not overly salty. I couldn't stop eating the arroz y frijoles and I normally see these as sides... also well spiced, beans were neither overly mushy / watery or too cakey / crunchy. (Probably two meals portion, $16 all in) Also please eat the chips and salsa; they're complimentary and I don't think I can eat store bought Tostitos with the same gusto ever again. Chips had a tiny bit, really really muted salt with just the right crunch, no oil or flavor residue on your fingers... really don't know how this is done Service (5/5) - 4/5 for speed but 6/5 for attentiveness. We were bothered the right amount, and while a little slow they were aware and gave us chips to while away the time. Ambiance (6/5) - by far the best decorated / cutest spot around. The patio is all cheery colors, looks like Día de los muertos all year round, and they sat people every other table, decently Covid conscious for AZ.
google avatar

Tami B.

Yelp
Food was great! And once we were seated, servers were attentive. Bit of a challenge getting seated even though they were not busy. We were a party of 5; husband & myself, our daughter and two grandchildren - 13 & 4. All other patrons were 40+. Feeling was they were not excited about our youngest needing a full size seat. We truly needed a table for six. I would go back, but maybe not during Spring Training.

Elliott V.

Yelp
Good food bad service. One male server in particular shouldn't be working in the service industry. I won't be recommending this establishment to anyone who asks me for a good Mexican restaurant in Old Town.
google avatar

Aprile W.

Yelp
Love how home feeling this place is when you sit inside. The chips and salsa are very good. The poblano chicken enchiladas are too die for the best flavor not to spicy. Tacos are good don't break apart or get soggy. Only issue we had was the staff it took awhile to get refills and the check
google avatar

Marylin C.

Yelp
Our last visit to Frank & Lupes was disappointing. We have been going there for many years. This time was for my birthday. I ended up embarrassed that I invited everyone to go there. Service was slow with many mistakes. Extra baskets of chips now cost extra. We had a large party and did not split the check. We were lucky to get one round of drinks. When saying our goodbyes we were told that we were a fire hazard in order to get us to exit quickly. It's like they believe they can do whatever they want due to location in old town and getting concierges to reco them. We tried to reach out to the owner directly and got no response.
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
The food was average at best, which is very disappointing in a city that has good Mexican food. The service was worse than the food which is unacceptable for how underwhelming the food was. The ambiance of the restaurant is pretty good, but don't let that trick you. I will not be back.

Adriana P.

Yelp
I have been wanting to go here for a couple years . Came in around 5:00 and saw it was happy hour . We ordered rolled tacos and nachos on happy hour menu . Both were horrible , the tacos were mushy and nachos were also not good. I'm Mexican , I know good food and this was not it. Even the service was not good. Our bill was $14.00 but honestly not worth that money at all . Don't eat here .
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
The food was standard Mexican food, but the service was so rotten that I can't give anything more than one star. From the moment we entered the door, the host treated us poorly and made us feel so unwelcome. We asked to sit in the patio and he asked us to leave the front door and go out in the back and enter the patio that way. Okay fine. We did that. Then the same guy came out into the patio and ignored us for a good five minutes. We asked to be seated, and he said we had to give him a few minutes, even though there were plenty of open tables right up front. He seated us and we ordered. The entire night, our waters were never filled, and I had to go to the server by the door and ask for water. We asked him to take a photo of us and he rolled his eyes. Worst offense was us asking him to split the bill between two credit cards and he said he couldn't do that. I am quite familiar with the point-of-sale system they use and I know for a fact that they can. It was atrocious and I am embarrassed that I brought an out-of-towner here.

Michelle P.

Yelp
I'm a customer service person. It makes the meal either better or worse. We walked in at 8:25pm. They close at 9pm. We felt like the guy was upset we came in. I don't like feeling that way. I'm sure he's tired but hey we made it in on time. I love Mexican food and thought it was decent. If in Old Town at the wine tasting rooms again I might give them another try.

Yelp
Wow. This place has certainly gone down hill. First; the bathroom was filled with diarrhea all over the toilet and the floor and the sink. This started the dinner meal awfully. Second; the chimichangas were frozen when served to me. No refund, nothing, barely an apology. The main entree was okay but not very good, I could tell it was all frozen and microwaved. This place has fallen off

Briana B.

Yelp
Where do I begin. Let's start with the most alarming aspect of this place was hidden fees for food that they act is free. Little did we know we were being charged for every basket of chips and salsa they continually brought out to us, never mentioning we had to pay for any of them. We never asked for refills, they just brought them out when one basket ended. And we had a very large party. Very deceptive. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. Some of the dishes were lukewarm and had to be rewarmed. The staff could barely act like they cared and we were constantly flagging down the waiter and waitress just to get food and drinks ordered and refilled. All in all the best thing about this place was the ambience. If you want to have a very mid experience then dine here.
google avatar

Mariko Y.

Yelp
Great food but we almost walked out due to the lack of service. It would've been perfect if they had just one more waiter.

Yelp
Best part is sitting outside... We hit an off night there, I hope. Food took :50m to arrive (one of the two cooks didn't show) and the credit card machine crashed so we had to gather cash (I think I was about $2 away from hitting the coin jar in my car). Food was good but not special ... chips in the apps are tasty and made there, I believe. If I wanted the authentic, I'd go to Rosita's on McDowell before here again. I'm not a hater, just not amazed to consider it a must-return-locale

Yelp
What the h3[[ has happened to frank and Lupe. A once great go to spot has become anything but great. Always understaffed so service is sketchy at best, and apparently unable to get ingredients. No bluecorn available except for specific items, which I guess now are made days in advance. So much for fresh Mexican food. Just seems it's now a take it or leave it mentality. Salty Senorita and Barrio Queen her we come.

Yelp
Just GREAT food that tastes like home made from the chips to the meals. Great food, service, location.
