"If you're looking for some peace, quiet, and time to zen out, the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden is the place to be. Surrounded by lush green grass with works of art scattered amongst the landscape, it is a nice place to retreat during your busy day. It is also one of the most distinguished outdoor sculpture collections in the country, featuring more than 70 modern and contemporary works set on the UCLA campus. The garden's core beliefs are that works of art are to be enjoyed as a part of everyday life. The Sculpture Garden is run by the Hammer Museum, and so shares the same hours - open at 11AM and closed on Mondays." - Grace Duong

"Sculptural works from the likes of Alexander Calder, Barbara Hepworth, Henri Mattisse, Isamu Noguchi, and others, sprawl across five acres of UCLA’s campus. You can wander around yourself, or arrange a tour though they book up far in advance."

Google
Awesome display of unique sculptures over a sprawling garden in the heart of ucla campus...excellent details put up on all sculptures. It was mesmerizing to see mother and child....The green lawns add to the beauty. A small walk from hilgard blvd and close to the botanical gardens..simply amazing.

Google
Absolutely wonderful place to spend some time with arts in open air. There are a few dozens of sculptures of different sizes, styles and materials in this little park, and it was a pleasant and exciting experience to walk about and get to know each of them. What I appreciate the garden the most is that somehow the sculptures are nicely integrated in the space, some in the lawn, some in a fountain, some stand alone. It gives me a sense that everything can be art and art is everywhere.

Google
This is a nice place to walk and relax inside UCLA. There are many sculptures and places to sit. Also funny squirrels that are absolutely interested IF you have food to give them.

Google
A beautiful corner of the UCLA campus with a dozen or more sculptures (in bronze, steel, aluminum, stone) widely placed across plazas and lawns. A 10-minute walk from Visitor Parking Structure #2.

You can find the works of great artists there. My wish is to be able to study there one day

Yelp
Wonderful ambiance, delightful sculptures, and generally a tranquil environment to relax. Whether it's watching the eclipse, enjoying the sun, increasing your art education, or a study break, there is something in the sculpture garden for everyone!

Yelp
World class art in a gorgeous location. A must-see when visiting campus, the perfect place to sit and read a book, and a great way to learn about artists and sculptures.

Yelp
What a super place to come and relax, read a book, bring your dog, and take some time to view many of the sculptures in this wonderful sculpture Garden. I have had this on my GPS for several years and since I was going to Beverly Hills for a play, this was a good place to spend some time. I saw people walking, reading, and waiting for auditions in a theatre at the one end of the garden. I didn't have enough time to see everything because the garden goes down a walkway that is lined with more sculptures. Truly a remarkable place and great to have on the campus of UCLA.

Yelp
This is a very cool place on the UCLA campus! Sue L. took Tim, Jules, and me on a mini tour of the University of California Los Angeles which included this interesting garden. It seems more like a small park because it covers quite a bit of area. We saw most of the sculptures, but not all of them. It was fun to talk about the message of each piece and figure out which ones were our favorites. For example, the wooden horse - or is it made out of metal? Go and check it out if you're in the area and have time!

Yelp
The Franklin D Murphy Sculpture Garden, on UCLA's grounds right by Charles E Young Drive East, is five acres of over 70 bronze, steel, iron, marble and stone sculptures from many 20th century heavyweights: Jean Arp, Alexander Archipenko, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Sorel Etrog, George Rickey, Jacques Lipchitz, Joan Miro, Henri Laurens, Francisco Zuniga and, well the list goes on. There aren't any major museums in California that have such a robust and comprehensive outdoor display. Tourists and art lovers seem to be generally unaware of this garden and it's unfortunate because just a few steps away is the Fowler Museum, another overlooked gem. There are some really marvelous pieces displayed on this tree-filled green, but you are immediately confronted by the fact that you are not at The Getty because some of the sculptures have been vandalized. (The nipples of William Zorach's elegant polished bronze female torso, Victory, seems to be too irresistible to young male admirers.) A few of the metal captions appear to have been forcibly removed, too, so it's obvious that UCLA is not casting the watchful eyes necessary to fully protect these treasures. With that said, there is so much here to see that lovers of outdoor art should put this place on their cultural map.

Yelp
I spent an hour here before the Fowler Museum opened, wandering around and looking at each sculpture. You'll spend about that much time if you read each placard and take pictures. It was a great way to spend a morning. There are more statues than initially meets the eye. The best statue was the very large man sleeping on the grass. Seriously, a human was passed out on the grass, in the middle of the garden, for all to see. Others were reading or having a picnic. It seems to be a nice place to relax.

Yelp
One of the perks of being a student of the School of Public Affairs is that the Sculpture Garden is right outside our door! I can never get bored of it or take it for granted. It's easily one of the coolest spots on campus. I have to admit I don't know much about art, some of the sculptures are down right weird and fascinating. But even if staring at "voluptuous" naked statues or a horse made of sticks is not your thing, you can still enjoy the tranquility of this place- especially on a nice sunny day, you can read or take a nap on the grass. There are some secluded bench areas that are a really nice escape from the campus noise. The placements of the sculptures make you realize that the garden is much larger it looks, even when you've stepped out of the grass area you'll find some nice surprises tucked behind buildings and here and there.

Yelp
So many beautiful sculptures in there. But I wish there were more flowers. It was nice to check it out if you happen to visit the campus

Yelp
As a sculpture garden, this is a really good one because of its size and numerous artists. But this puts me in a dilemma regarding the rating. Most sculpture gardens are part of a bigger entity like a museum or a large city park where the cumulative experience increases the rating. A visit to UCLA can be a cumulative experience. I created my own culture tour of UCLA which included this sculpture garden along with the Hammer, Fowler, Mathias Botanical Garden, and the Meteorite Gallery. All sites were free. But this isn't a review of my entire visit to UCLA, so that's why the sculpture garden has a relatively low 3-stars even though I enjoyed the visit. Located in the north end of campus. the sculptures are close to the Fowler and Royce Hall. Because there are more sculptures than it initially appears, it took 35 minutes to see all the works.

Yelp
Tip: free UCLA wifi! This is a very pleasant place to stop, sit, and enjoy yourself on campus.

Yelp
This is probably the most peaceful place on the UCLA campus. I don't do it often, but in the past I have brought food over from LuValle and eaten it in the sculpture garden just for a little change of pace. It's also a nice place to study on occasion, although the benches are not too comfortable. Overall, whenever I took classes near the sculpture garden, walking through it would be this highlight of my day. It's definitely something that you should walk through and experience at least once.

Yelp
Spent a lot of time here back in the day. Wonderful pieces including a Matisse relief; early cubism from Picasso; and some neat kinetic art. Great place to spend some quality time with yourself.

Yelp
My favorite part of hiking across campus to my Design / Media Arts classes in Broad was walking through the Murphy Sculpture Garden. Usually, I'd be in too much of a hurry to stop and really explore the sculptures, but when I had time to kill, I loved looking over all the pieces and snapping a few shots. The garden adds a lot of character and richness to the campus and I genuinely appreciate each and every piece. My favorites are the Richard Serra sculpture by Broad and the fountain sculpture by Melnitz.

Yelp
The sculpture garden is one of many cool things to see on the UCLA campus. I recommend bringing a coffee or some reading material and sitting down on the grass amongst the sculptures. You will fit right in with the other students. It might be a little awkward to examine each piece as you would in a museum and certainly do not think about all the strange things the students may be doing to the sculptures at 2 am in the morning. You can find more information on the link to my blog on my profile.

Yelp
sprawling over a large swath of the UCLA campus, the franklin murphy sculpture garden is one of the most comprehensive and distinguished outdoor sculpture gardens in the country. dedicated in 1967, the garden contains more than seventy works by an impressive roster of artists that represent figural and abstract works and illustrates different approaches to sculpture. out of all the works on display, one of the most recent installations is my favorite- a fourteen foot high piece of curved steel titled T.E.U.C.L.A. commissioned by billionaire philanthropist eli broad, it's part of new york artist richard serra's critically acclaimed "torqued ellipse" series (hence the namesake). known for merging brute force with elusive space in walk-through environments of interlocking curves, i always come across someone tracing their way around the torqued steel, looking up at the curves that rise high above. installed in 2006, it was the the first serra sculpture to be find a permanent home in the southern california area and it's a wonderful addition to the garden that has quickly proved itself to be an engaging and evocative piece.

Yelp
Most beautiful spot on the UCLA campus. Get a coffee at Luvalle and just enjoy the statues. I like the wooden horse.

Yelp
So relaxing. Beautiful art. What more can a law student ask for when searching for a place to study?

Yelp
This is one of the reasons why I try to take my South Campus classes in North Campus. A very nice area to walk through or ride a scooter as I did. Usually this is a stop on orientation where you are first introduced to the wooden, um steel horse that is crazy.

Yelp
An impressive collection of sculpture populates this lush, tranquil garden. I always feel rejuvenated after a visit to this oasis in the city, where you can relax, clear your mind and enjoy the surrounding beauty .

Yelp
The UCLA sculpture garden has an excellent collection, it is free, and it is located in a very pleasant setting. I believe that it is one of the best sculpture gardens in the country. Here are my pictures from the garden: http://laplaces.blogspot.com/2009/05/ucla-sculpture-garden.html
