The Best Hot Dogs in Portland, and Where to Find Them - Eater Portland

"Housed in a cute, faux-Bavarian A-frame at the back of the Whole Foods parking lot, just steps from the culinary powerhouse of Northeast 28th Avenue, Franks has been delivering jumbo-sized dogs and hand-made milkshakes to Portlanders for nearly 30 years. Be warned: the one-third pound German beer frank is not for the faint-hearted, and the chili topping is hearty and loaded with beans. Onsite seating is limited to just one covered table, and six uncovered ones, so be prepared to grab and go on rainy days." - Nathan Williams

Where to Eat and Drink Near Portland’s Laurelhurst Park

"Out of the pass-through window of its yellow A-frame, Franks A Lot serves a cornucopia of stadium food classics. Hand-dipped corn dogs and hot dogs headline the menu here; customers should expect to see a variety of franks, toppings, and vegan options available. For die-hard fans of Chicago-style hot dogs, Franks A Lot follows the traditional recipe to a T, complete with yellow mustard, green relish, chopped onions, pickles, tomatoes, sport peppers, and celery salt. Orders of hand-cut fries and onion rings make for excellent shared sides. With meals mainly taken to-go, seating is limited to only a few outdoor tables." - Olivia Lee

I haven't had a hot dog in years because I'm not really a fan but these are good. Large portions. The chili cheese fries we got is a small. Gluten free and vegetarian options. Quick service and hot made to order.

Google
Very yummy vegan bratwurst! They were generous with toppings and the flavors were great. I love that they have a few vegan options to choose from. We would definitely come back for a quick bite again!

Google
This is what they mean by local Portland spot. Don't go to a dumb Food Cart. This is what is amazing. And important to Portland. Don't miss this unique place and they have veggie options as well. It's just a couple of guys doing their best.

Google
I was very disappointed and did not expect the terrible quality based on the other reviews here. They give you very few (frozen) onion rings for $6.25. They wear no gloves, didn’t wash their hands as far as I saw, touched ingredients with their bare hands, and the same person was cashier and made the food. I am concerned about those sanitation problems. I got a corn dog, it was not crunchy at all and definitely undercooked. It was also so so oily I could only eat a few bites. The chili dog was okay, but we felt uncomfortable eating it after they put the cheese and onions on with their unwashed hands. It was also really expensive for the size and quality of the food. I don’t recommend coming here.

Google
Great hot dog joints are rare. I'm always on the lookout for excellent ones. Franks has been on my list to try for months. Most places offer one or possibly two different wieners. Usually the options are just toppings. Franks has about a dozen dogs to choose from. That's legit! I ordered the Red Hot Frank which is their spiciest. I went with yellow mustard, cheddar and onion. It was truly fantastic. The price is excellent too. It's just $7.75. The cheese was a little more, but worth it. Next time I will add chili. It's a stand so the limited seating is outdoors. Ample parking. Franks-A-Lot is one of the best. Check out my profile for more great eateries and craft cocktail bars. ✌🏼

Google
We come often and enjoy it. Food is decent, this is a hot dog shack so I'm not sure what everyone was expecting but you get what you pay for.

Google
First off this little gem I found Franks A lot is a small little building on the north side of the street. The reason I rated the atmosphere a little lower is simply because the building itself is so small. It would be easy to just drive past. But that would be a huge mistake this place has great milkshakes and a decent menu size considering it is all hotdogs. The price is completely reasonable. This is a must go to place. Since the seating is outside plan on taking it home or like me just eat in the warm car.

Google
Excellent service! Great dogs! Lots of outdoor seating! I've passed by sooooo many times but finally tried it today. The bacon cheddar corndog was great. The cheezy stick (mozza stick rolled in corndog batter and fried) was really good as well. Next time I'm def. going to try a milkshake. I'm see a few reviews saying their corndogs were "soggy" well, eat there if you want hot crisp fresh dogs obviously.

Yelp
Thanks a lot Franks-A-Lot, the hot dogs were great! Plus who doesn't love a punch card?

Yelp
I was thinking about this restaurant the other day. So far as I can remember, Margo opened about 22-23 years ago. I recall when she opened; I lived nearby. So over the years I estimate that I've eaten there averaging twice a month. So that's (12 months X 2) X 23. That's 552 hot dogs at Franks-a-Lot. And every single one was just great, without exception! Try it out; you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Great place for a good quality hot dog! We were shopping at Whole Foods when we decided we wanted a snack, so of course we had to try the hot dog stand - it's right in the parking lot! The dogs were dogs - nothing too special but hit the spot for sure. I love that you can choose your own kind of dog and customize what toppings you want, or choose a specialty dog with recommended toppings, like the Chicago style dog we got. Both were solid, and I'd definitely come back here for my hot dog craving. The staff was so friendly as well, and FAST. They were slinging dogs left and right.

Yelp
Best hot dogs / sausage around. Love the potato salad too! Won't have to spend a fortune. Nice outdoor seating on a nice day

Katelyn B.

Yelp
I absolutely love this little shack!! I have been going to Franks since I was a child. I have a lot of happy memories going here. The staff are always welcoming and sweet. I always love coming here and getting a quick hot dog and a enjoying the atmosphere. A hidden gem I like to share with all my friends!

Yelp
Hot diggity dog! I think I've just found my new favorite fast food snack shack! Franks-A-Lot is the "rill dill", folks: cheap, quick, delicious brats and krauts, savory, spicy or vegan (ugh!), on a stick or in a bun, all of them packing that potent pork piquancy, and customizable to your preferences, with every condiment you can imagine (although WAY too many people were ordering ketchup with their dogs, if you ask me)! Whatever your sausage selection, you are going to relish it...with or without relish! There's also an excellent selection of sides, salads, sodas to accompany your massive weiner: we sampled the potato salad (pretty sure it's just Reser's in a plastic container), along with our Red Hot Chicago Style, and a Spicy Oktoberfest corndog. My wife couldn't finish hers, as it was simply too much meat for her to handle at once, so she took half home to save it for later. As for my Red Hot Chicago, the only complaint is that it comes so overloaded with toppings, it's impossible to tackle it without a knife and fork. Let me be frank: if you find yourself longing for a linguiça luncheon, a snack sausage on a stick, or a moist meat missile, then look no (frank)furter! Frank-you-very-much!

Yelp
So friendly and polite. If you're gluten free or celiac, they do not have a dedicated fryer. Everything here is good. They don't gouge you for sauces.
google avatar

Yelp
After getting the healthy stuff at Whole Foods, this is a great pit stop, I mean, they have gluten-free corn dogs (they share oil) so it's good for you. Speaking of the gf corndog is not like those you find in the super market, well not as fluffy but tastes amazing. I do suggest waiting until it has cooled a bit. The hot dog is also amazing and HUGE. I thought I was getting a snack and it ended up being a lite dinner. The couple running place are very nice. There is also seating around to enjoy, if you don't want to wait. Next time I'm around, I'm trying the chili cheese fries next!!!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
The best hotdogs in the Portland, Oregon area! The variety is wonderful and the condiments are delicious and the guy who is usually serving up the hotdogs is very pleasant!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
The only issue I have with this place is decision fatigue - there are so many great looking options that I have the hardest time deciding what to get. Looks like I'll have to come back time and time again! (oh no!)
google avatar

Yelp
Franks-A-Lot is a specialist in hot dogs and sausages. It has a drive through, walk up window and few outside tables. Most of their offerings are in the range of $5 to $7.5 They offer several versions for vegans as well! All the dogs can be made into corn dogs. I'm not a fan of corn dogs but, I'll give it a try at some point. They are super quick and the food is great. Nice friendly people running the store. They put a few cucumbers on their Chicago Dogs which isn't common but, works.
google avatar

Yelp
I've eaten here three times, twice I had a hot dog and a soda, once just a milkshake. I know that it's just hot dogs, but this place does them right. For one, the use quality dogs. The Polish is fresh, perfectly cooked, and just exactly spicy enough. Your choice of toppings. They have mayonnaise, which I know doesn't sound like much but you'd be surprised how many times I order a hot dog and they don't have any mayo. The bun has been soft and fresh each time, and it's less than what I've paid at food carts that sell similar hot dogs. It might sound Strange, but that $5.50 Polish and $3 Mexican Coca-Cola is one of the best quick takeout meals I've had in months. Their milkshakes are hand scooped and delicious.

Yelp
First thing the person said to me was 'What do you want?' while rolling their eyes. I responded with a chilli frank and he yelled back 'OH another chilli dog!' with such sarcasm. My friend ordered after and was met with the same out of pocket attitude. It was overall an unsettling interaction that I met with grace. So although I was left feeling uncomfortable I left a tip and ate outside trying to move on. As I was eating this mediocre, OH-another-CHILLI, hotdog the guy who took our order smoked outside. And at some point he turned towards me while smoking and staring me down. Absolutely bizzare! I would have never paid for these dumb hotdogs if I knew i was going to have this uneasy experience. The hot dog was nothing special. Franks for nothing!

Matt H.

Yelp
Love this place! I would consider it one of the essential Portland landmarks. If you love corn dogs like me, then you need Franks-A-Lot.
google avatar

Amayah E.

Yelp
Their vegan hotdog is horrible. Wish I could leave a positive reviews because the owner re-did my order when I had red onions on my hot dog. But oh no no no, I couldn't take more than 2 bites
google avatar

Janelle F.

Yelp
This place is so cute and food is very good! Me and husband came here for lunch, had outside seating, for a little shack outside Whole Foods they have big flavor. Hot dogs are the size of Costco's, you will not leave hungry. Service was great and didn't have to wait long for food.

Kendall Z.

Yelp
Love this place...corn dogs are giant and delicious and their ice cream sandwiches are the perfect dessert to top it off. Lovely people running this place, always a delight stopping in here. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Once or twice a year I get a craving for a hot dog. Since I barely eat hot dogs I'm very picky and expect the ones I eat to be good. My craving for a hot dog happened to come while I was in Portland so we visited Franks-A-Lot. I ordered the polish dog with mustard and it was exactly right! If I lived in the area, I would most probably be eating way more than just 1-2 hot dogs a year, especially since they have a convenient drive thru and they're super chill, friendly & fast.

Keegan G.

Yelp
Horrible customer service! lady just talks over you when you ask her a question implies that she has corn dogs when I'm asking her about coney dogs she don't give you a chance to talk she cuts you off then proceeds to hang up on me. Worst customer service for someone that has never been there and that would want to try it out there first time. There attitude is not needed Go somewhere else ‼
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Very sweet people, had a good laugh with them. Hotdawgs are delic. I love me some good ol hotdogs, you can choose your toppings and pay a little extra for those even more delicious toppings like cheese and chili. Some hotdawgs already come with toppings. I got the all beef frank I believe. I brought my pup along and they offered her a treat she was very grateful, I will be visiting again.

Yelp
Sometimes you just have a hankering for a dog. Frank's is the place to go, It's my go to hot dog/corn dog stand. Frank a lot is located next to Whole Foods so it's convenient when you're on that grocery run. You can either drive thru or walk up. Yes there is a guy named Frank and the people that run this place are super nice, helpful and accommodating. There are lots of different types of dogs to choose from and you can have any of them either hot dog style or corn dog style. I enjoyed the Polish dog, corn dog style with a side of the hand cut fries/fry sauce. yes, the hand cut fries are delicious and don't forget the fry sauce. Lots of salads to choose from if you prefer. Support your local small guy. This has made it through the pandemic so far and I hope it stays that way. Check it out! :-)

Yelp
If Yelp was around 20 years ago, I would of been the Dutchess of this establishment. I'm into food that connects me to fond memories and that's my vibe here. Much like Cher, this place has been around since forever and still looks & IS fabulous! Quietly feeding the community from it's humble little A frame and conveniently located in the Whole Foods parking lot. Franks A Lot's forte aims to cater to us hungry folks looking for fresh toppings & delicious weiners! Creative pairings too! My go to is the Big Beef Dog, Chicago Style. All those yummy cuke cubes, seasonings, peppers... SO GOOD. Like a salad atop a guilty pleasure. The hubs likes the chili cheese dog, but it's a generous handful so arm yourself with napkins and fork.. Their cucumber salad side is crisp & delightful. Friendly staff and they've got a drive thru!! I'll always keep coming back.

Yelp
This place has such amazing service! They are the sweetest I have been here a few times now and the food is always good! It's at very reasonable prices and the seating there is nice and shaded very clean too! I love recommending this place to people they deserve lots of business!
google avatar

Yelp
Great chili dogs, good fries, nice people eager for your business! I think this is the best dog in town and I have some friends who head over here weekly who would agree wholeheartedly with me!

Yelp
It's been a chilly Fall in Portland and being someone who follows a strictly gluten-free diet, I was stoked to see that this spot advertises hand-dipped gluten-free corndogs. They also sometimes have a sign outside saying they could use the support right now. Being a small business owner myself, I was happy to patronize them as a proud resident of the Buckman/Laurelhurst neighborhood. The man who took my order was swift and friendly. My food came out fast. But what happened next, was something I never could have predicted... as I opened the steaming paper bag that held my order I was met with the most magnificent corn dog I've ever seen. If I'm being honest, I was a little intimidated. You see, some corndog places will boast of the size of their corndog before you even order and then you get it and well, it's really more of a "slightly above average" sized corndog. Not the case with Franks-A-Lot! I had no expectations going into the experience. I've been perfectly satisfied with standard corn dogs in the past. Size doesn't ALWAYS matter. After this corndog though, I just might be ruined for all other corndogs. I don't know. I'm trying to just take it day by day and not get too ahead of myself... Sam (the corndog) and I have been out several times now and I'm happy to report we seem to have a lot in common. It's wonderful that we have similar political views, shared interests, and aligned values but what I love most is that we can just be together in complete silence. There is a really powerful unspoken peace. It's hard to explain but maybe you get it. Anyway, I highly recommend Franks-A-Lot and only wish I had come here sooner as I hear that visiting the pumpkin patches out on Sauvie Island is incredibly romantic. Fingers crossed Sam and I will make it next year!

Yelp
This is still our favorite place to grab dogs for the whole family there is one for every member of our household and no one is ever disappointed!! Thank you for such a great place great good and amazing staff!!! Here's to another year !!!!!
google avatar

Vasily K.

Yelp
Change your life by eating a hotdog here. You'd think I'm kidding but I'm pretty sure I'm a changed man just for eating somewhere I felt comfortable responding "hell yeah, brother" to every single question asked of myself. I had the beef hotdog with ketchup, mayo and red onion. Scientifically proven to be the best hot dog recipe on planet Earth, it was phenomenal. Come get you some!
google avatar

DivingButterfly K.

Yelp
This place has been here for ages it seems and if you are craving a quick, inexpensive hotdog or corn dog, is conveniently placed. It has especially come in handy before grocery shopping since Whole Foods is right next door. "Never shop hungry" as they say. But what I witnessed this past weekend after eating here will forever keep me away. Had a corndog before grocery shopping and when I came out with my bags I watched the guy who had taken my order/served me walking through the parking lot, quite disheveled and dirty I might add, smoking a cigarette and blowing huge snot-rockets on the ground. After I put my groceries in the trunk I casually walked around to the front of Franks-A-Lot and watched him finish his cigarette, spit on the ground and then fully return to work WITHOUT washing his hands. NOPE. I will NOT be coming back here again and it totally ruined my afternoon to witness that after eating here. I'm still quite disgusted by what I witnessed. NOT COOL.
google avatar

Yelp
Well I love the Franks-a-lot and the young man no longer works there. If you want the best hot dog, corn dog or onion rings then is this the place for you. They are locally owned and operated. They are not corporate in any sense of the word. When you support this business you support local Portlanders. They have everything you could want to top your dogs, relish, onions (white or red) kraut. Murray still loves the dog house!!
google avatar

Dawn C.

Yelp
This place has the very best homemade corn dogs around!! A great variety of things on the menu...a hot dog in so many ways! You can't go wrong if your hungry for a hot dog's
google avatar

Judith M.

Yelp
Great hot dogs, the corn dogs are exceptional. The fries with their special salt are also really really good.
google avatar

Martina C.

Yelp
COVID protocols are in place and being followed, thanks Franks-A-Lot! We had eaten a late lunch nearby and my husband wanted to see if they had Vegan options. Well I'd hardly call it options, it's like a full menu! There are LOADS of choices! (Daily there is a different vegan option and he offers MUCH more than is listed on the menu board, just let him know you're vegan!) He got a Vegan Italian Sausage with onions, ketchup and mustard. I had a little bite even though I didn't need more food, but it smelled REALLY good. Before I was vegan, as a kid, I'd take a trip almost yearly to NYC, one of my favorite smells and memories is having those street hot dogs. The smell of this place took me back! GREAT dog. And I definitely look forward to going back. Super friendly and super yummy!!

L W.

Yelp
Ordered here for a work lunch. Everything was great. Pricing is more than exceptional, as when I have ordered from any other food place it gets pretty pricey. But no, my associates could pick two things each. Not that you need two things, as their portions are generous. Thanks ya'll for the great food!!
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
One man show run by the man Frank. Got all types of different dogs going. I got the polish dog and it was great!!! All the food here is solid, can't go wrong with any of the choices. Check out for sure when you are in the area.

C S.

Yelp
We ate here before heading to a game it the food was amazing and the staff was extremely friendly! I would highly recommend eating here.
google avatar

Kathryn Z.

Yelp
Had the vegan dog and vegan corn dog. Line was long and took forever-- not worth the wait. Vegan hot dog was ok and vegan corn dog was superrr under fried and really soft :(
google avatar

Frances L.

Yelp
Amazing Franks! Plump and juicy cooked to order. The chili dog was huge! The Chicago dog was my favorite the little peppers on top just bring a refreshing bite to the dog. I don't know how we haven't heard of this place before. It's tucked into the Whole Foods parking lot so easy to miss, but definitely worth the stop.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Been here 3 times and each time the owner is rude beyond belief. They have a sign outside asking for community support to stay open and then teat their customers like crap. Never going back to this spot and never recommending it to anyone.
google avatar

Frank G.

Yelp
So glad they are still in the neighborhood serving up hot dogs with so many options to select from. Thank you

Ray L.

Yelp
It was good wish the corn dog was crispy. Looked that way but didn't have much of a bite. Definitely going back to try it again
google avatar

Eli W.

Yelp
Hot dogs are simple. But sometimes people just nail every. Single. Detail. Great chili! Fries.. top notch. Proper chicago dogs. Boiled or grilled. Every detail that any dog lover likes is acceptable (except ketchup on a Chicago dog :) go there. Go again. And again.
google avatar

N H.

Yelp
Delicious hand dipped corn dogs, totally recommend, made to order, be patient it's worth it!

Brizna G.

Yelp
I had the vegan hot dog and thought it was really good with the vegan works. Not the best customer service but I would def go back for a dog.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
I like big buns and I cannot lie! You other hot dogs cannot deny. Cheesy, not really, but lots of flavor in your ear. My hip hop heads will recognize I put multiple song references in the same paragraph that shouldn't MIX. Sir Franks-A-Lot....Sir Mix-A-Lot. I'm done. Now on to the actual food. Per usual, I asked the lady who worked there, the top 3 items. I always do this because then this review is recognizing what is 2 legit to quit. So, one of the three was the corndog. Honestly, this was a 4.5stars out of 5 or a 90%. GREAT, GREAT Corndog. Value, taste, speed, all-around experience was great! I rounded down because I just felt like it was not an out of this world experience, but just a great corn-dog. So, i can change this review later when I try something else. Until then, Franks-A-Lot, I will come back and try another. Thanks A Lot!

Bob Q.

Yelp
I've been giving this place business for years, but I won't be coming back. The guy who runs the place always has attitude. And I'm not really for it, when I spend my hard earned money to support a business, I shouldn't be greeted like it's a bother to take my order
google avatar

Chezz C.

Yelp
They do an amazing number of different things in this tiny place, and they do them all quickly and with a smile. First, they make quite a variety of hot dogs and sausages, including vegan options. Then, once you've decided on which dog, there is a dizzying number of options: steamed or grilled, corn-dogged or bun, and which condiments. The condiment list even includes subcategories, i.e., there is more than one type of peppers, more than one type of mustard. And then the side dishes, all lovingly made by hand, including fries, shakes, salads (the cucumber salad is a favorite of mine and seems healthier than most other options).
google avatar

Andrew N.

Yelp
Was super excited to come here to eat some freshly dipped and fried corn dogs but it was an incredible letdown. The batter was not crispy on mine or my girlfriends and we ate them within 2 minutes of them being cooked. The onion rings are frozen in a bag so don't get your hopes up for sexy freshly battered onion rings. If your thing is hot dogs and corn dogs and you can't even make a crispy batter then I can only assume you're ok with mediocrity and that's not something I want to support. I'm willing to come back one day for a chili cheese dog but will not go out of my way. It's not challenging at all to make a crispy batter so you can serve up some sexy corn dogs and onions rings. Let me know if y'all want my help but at the very least please don't let yourself become complacent serving mediocre food. Always seek to improve and you'll be rewarded.

Yelp
The hotdogs were really good and corn dog was prepared right infront of us and very quick. We ordered chilli dog and it's wa goooood. Service was fabulous. They were very polite and helpful too.I would definitely be back anytime. I recommend this place it's easy quick and yummy place to be at a reasonable price too.

Yelp
The staff was super nice, there were cute picnic tables to eat at and the food was delicious.

Manny G.

Yelp
Please support this awesome local hotdog stand! Great food and great value. The hotdogs are off the hook! The Chicago dog and the Oktoberfest dog was delicious. You have got to order the homemade hand cut french fries.
