In Remote Alaska, Meal Planning Is Everything | Eater

"The Fairbanks supermarket branch serves as a critical provisioning hub for remote Alaska communities through its extensive ‘Bush order’ system, boxing and shipping groceries that are then flown north. Its heavy volume of such orders made it one of the highest-grossing stores in the Kroger chain in 2016. Customers rely on the store to assemble carefully packed orders treated like fragile cargo, often calling a special desk to read lists and pay by phone; the process is fraught with uncertainty about produce ripeness and substitutions, and adds significant cost once boxing fees and air freight (roughly $0.79 per pound for flights to bush communities) are factored in." - Bree Kessler

Google
New to this location. Really well stocked and clean. It is big. We had to go to housewares and it was at the opposite end with groceries in the middle. Had everything we needed. Don’t see the crazy theft mitigation we see in Seattle. Would definitely go again.

Google
A Kroger owned company, My Kroger card from Ohio was honored for weekly specials. The store is bright and clean. In addition to food, "Fred's" as the locals call it, also carries, clothing, shoes, housewares, a Jewelry store within the store, electronics, souvenirs, and more. We didn't make it through the entire store so I am sure I missed some things.

Google
Not enough cashiers working and they don't open all their self-checkout posts, so get ready to wait in line. Pretty expensive too. Employees at FredMeyer pay to the Union, $300 to start working and $50 per month! That's a lot.

Google
Good Location don't shop here often due to living in Anchorage but couldn't have asked for a better weekend to make the trip!

Google
Huge Fred’s! Super clean. Fancy. Have everything you need and more. Very easy to access as you arrive in Fairbanks.

Google
A most excellent selection of food, clothing, furniture, automotive, lawn and garden. And kids clothes, all under one room. Fred Meyer out performs Walmart in every way.

Google
Really nice folks and great selection of souvenir hoodies that are reasonably priced.

Google
What a great store! They have a little of everything it seemed like. We enjoyed the store on our visit to Alaska and will go again next time.

Yelp
Best place to shop in the area for good values and really good produce and coffee. Make sure you sign up for the deals club you're usually save like 10 or 15% off of regular prices on sale items. This one has a good selection of kids toys and school stuff as well as regular food things.

Yelp
quite amazed with the complete range of groceries available as well as the reasonable prices and nice ambience. Truly a great asset to have near our Airbnb.

Yelp
Over the last few months I feel very inconvenienced going into the store. Your self checkout always needs override if I leave a bag in my cart . Sometimes I check out in tech first . I go on my lunch breaks so don't have a lot of time . Today my cart locked when I went out the door. I checked my receipt didn't miss one item . It's really embarrassing that I had it happen, and of course nobody works the door ,so I had to carry all my bags to my car. Glad I double bag my stuff . I get theft is high but do better ...or find paying customers leave. Hire a door person or get ride of self checkout.

Yelp
Ordered a cake for my birthday this year. Picked it up on the 11th. Was supposed to be buttercream. The cake was pretty, but that is where it stopped. The cake was horribly dry. The frosting tasted of plastic, definitely not appetizing what so ever. Very disappointed. I will never order a cake from you again. Please be aware. They make "buttercream" which tastes like soft plastic and it tasted bad. No almond extract which is typically used on a Birthday cake. Save yourself some money and disappointment either make it yourself or go elsewhere. Absolutely GROSS!

Yelp
fred myers east, has the worst most awful fuckin costumer service as well as the staff there are so shitty to costumers!! i definitely will not ever everrrr shop there again.
google avatar

Yelp
It's a Freddy's. You've been to one, you've been to them all. This one is in Fairbanks though, so you don't have to remember to bring your own bags, which is a nice perk. Being a Freddy's, it's still way better than Safeway/Carr's.

Yelp
WOW food and cloths everything I need for my trip I'm really surprised the prices are pretty reasonable for being in Alaska. Plus they have fresh seafood and every deli item you need. Definitely a must stop

Yelp
If a grocery store and department store had a baby, it would be Fred Meyer. Came here because the groceries here are a lot cheaper then Safe Way. They have huge market with everything you could need. They are a Kroger brand store so they have generic groceries for cheap. Very busy. Great place to get groceries and other necessities for your trip.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything you might need. Food, furniture, house hold items, cloths. Decent prices and selections. Even souvenirs if you are visiting.

Yelp
I am going to be honest when it comes to grocery's I usually shop at the competition. Of course if I'm looking for other stuff besides grocery's then of course Fred Meyers could be an option. But I will say when I'm Fairbanks Fred Meyers is much more superior to the competition. With full shelves & great selection of food options. There deli is ready for customers early in the morning & food is hot & well prepared. Also I want to complement them on excellent customer service. Ever employee with a good morning as I passed. Was very enlightening. Thank you for that. Anyone that has been to or lives in Fairbanks knows they have limited options on shopping.

Yelp
My favorite store in Fairbanks! Surprisingly the prices and variety of items are pretty much the same with what we have in DC. I love the gift section. Also it's a great place to have a quick bite (sandwich, sushi, salad bar, etc.) before you head for your road trip! Staff are welcoming and always ready to help answer your questions. Tip: it's so close to the airport, and there is a low-priced gas station across from the street if you want to add gas to your rental car before you return it to the airport.
google avatar

Jill W.

Yelp
For those on the East Coast, I'd liken this place to a cross between Walmart and Sears. And get your souvenirs here, prices don't get better elsewhere although selection is not comprehensive. The only thing missing are fruit jams and honeys. There's a complete food area with ready made food and produce, flowers, just like a grocery store, etc. But it's so much more...you have a huge outdoor section (maybe because it's Alaska), a big souvenir section (tip: get your stuff here it's almost HALF the price than the airport...regretting that I didn't do it), and they label local goods so you know what to get. Some good ideas: local coffees, jerkies, moose chocolates, and those Hawaiian Luau chips are kind of unusual.
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
One of the largest grocery stores in Fairbanks from what I've seen. It has a huge selection of items, not just food. I came to buy a few gifts and snacks during my stay.
google avatar

Tony R.

Yelp
To the woman in deli meats, u are working customer service! Meaning u take care of customers! So when we asked you to slice up some meat, your attitude of us bothering you, is BS...we are the reason for your pay check! So next time try treating customers with a smile and be happy you have a job!

Yelp
For those of us unfamiliar w/ Fred Meyer ( like me ), this place was a dream come true! It's like a Macy's, a Target, a Best Buy, & a Home Depot all rolled into one! This is the largest Fred Meyers in the area & it's closest to the airport. Made for the perfect stop as we arrived in Fairbanks & were stocking up on supplies & essentials for the lodge Absolutely *everything* you could dream of.... from a gas station to gardening to office supplies, automotive, organic groceries & natural bulk food section, extensive deli w/ all kinds of sandwiches, artisan cheeses, & a huge salad bar. Wine & spirits, clothing, home & personal cleaning supplies, pharmacy....are you getting the picture? Only drawback was that no one seemed to want to ring us up. The wine & spirits guy actually told us he'd "rather not" as we approached his station to ring up our beer & wine....and the other cashier we found ( for the *rest* of our groceries ) took 1 look at our cart & gave a heavy sigh. Gee, sorry we actually want to buy things from your store We were also a bit bummed as each of our cashiers asked if we had a Rewards Card & when we said no, they were both like hmm, okay. Absolutely ZERO offer to have us sign up for their program right then & we most certainly would have liked to have taken advantage of those Rewards Perks while we were there! Lots of cars in the parking lots had their motors running but there was no one inside ...LOTS of trust going on in Fairbanks!

Yelp
Fred Meyer Fairbanks-West is more like a Kohls/Bed Bath Beyond & Walmart all rolled into one. Even the Walmart Supercenter located right near the other Fred Meyer across town seems almost empty most of the time because everybody shops at Fred Meyer. I was on a job assignment (non-military) in Fairbanks and used this store a lot. An incredible souvenir section right in the middle of the store, a wide grocery selection, and a full service liquor store right on site. Only downside is that its not a 24 hour store, but that does sort of remind you that you're in Alaska. College kids from nearby University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) are here a great deal, so you'll see a lot of them Definitely have all the basic essentials you may need (toothpaste, deodorant, soap) but also bath towels, silverware, and winter apparel. Of the two Fred Meyers in Fairbanks this one tends to stay pretty busy, so beat the crowds and shop before noon. Locals tend to do their major grocery shopping from Friday night into late Sunday night.
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
We don't shop Freddy's west... ever. The staff here is friendly and helpful always professional and the customer is always right. We love the cheese selection and olive bar! The meat dep is also great. When weather is bad it's a bummer that items aren't in stock but rain checks are offered so it works out. We have been using click list for 80% of our reg shopping because it's too easy.
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
I mean, it's a Freddie's... so it prolly won't come as a surprise that this place is amazing and has everything! My only complaint is why is it so oddly organized? For example, I found cheese in 3 separate places no where near each other?! I've been in Fairbanks a few weeks and of course been here many times and can still barely find my way around this monster. That said, I also (eventually) stumble upon every odd and end I'm seeking and leave with all that I came for and, most often, way more. Maybe they should publish store maps?!

Yelp
My wife likes to point out that they aren't walmart. So there is an expectation when it comes to prices and selection. The service is hit or miss, some days we can't wait to come back , other days the cashiers and FES look like they are sick of people and will fire upon anyone who dares to cross them. But when you are sick of having to see 'the people of walmart' (you should really type that phrase into google images) it's a nice change. When push comes to shove, this town is only so big, and Fred Meyers, having 2 locations, is giving you more options then before.
google avatar

Yum Y.

Yelp
I come here when I crave a quick bit of sushi. I know it's a grocer but it's easy. There's also a salad bar, hot food, Starbucks, a place for eating. Then I can pick up supplies, from food to housewares, before heading home.
google avatar

Ronnie O.

Yelp
Went in to have a key made & the lady right off the bat said they might not be able to cut the key. I reminded her that even though it was a transponder key that they can still be cut just like the generic keys. She then made the smart remark that in order for them to cut a key that I would have had to of bought it there at the store. Never going to have Fred Meyers cut another key for me.

Yelp
For travelers, this is a great place to get a meal. For about $6 you get 3 large chicken tenders and 2 sides. I ate here twice while in Fairbanks as it was one of the most affordable and filling options. There's also seating and a microwave so you can get soup to microwave as well if you want something to warm you up.

Scott S.

Yelp
For 30 years i have chosen to shop at the Fred's In Fairbanks, although I prefer the "new" one. That ends now because of a newly implemented company policy that I find offensive and discriminatory of young Alaskans and duty stationed service personnel. Effective immediately sporting arms and ammunition sales will be denied to anyone under the age of 21 despite federal law placing the age limit at 18 years of age. I doubt the policy will stand long, they are sure to be sued and sure to lose. FYI, Wally World has implemented the same policy. Not another dime from me until this discriminatory policy is voluntarily rescinded.

Yelp
This place is like a Super Walmart run by Kroger... which if you read the Wikipedia history, is pretty much what they are. It's the cheaper grocery store in town and has all the other things you may need. I was able to get salmon jerky, touristy stuff, and swim trunks all at the same time. I imagine if I lived in Fairbanks this would be my go to store.

Yelp
This rating is for my recent dinner experience at Fred Meyer. First about the store: this is a giant chaotic everything store that whams you with sensory overload. That said, it is more pleasant than Walmart by a long shot. This location is my favorite of all the FMs I have been to because it has more stuff, especially natural and gourmet food. Now, about my dinner: FM has kicked their sushi up a few notches over the past few years. Every time I come back into town I notice something new. I was tempted by a sampler in a heart shaped package but instead went for Chef Sample A, which had pieces of 3 rolls topped with avocado, salmon, and shrimp. It was fresh, moist, and flavorful. Next: dessert. I walked past the bakery area and noticed that they are trying to be all hip and Portlandish by topping donuts with children's breakfast cereal. Bleah! But something caught my eye: a maple donut with two strips of bacon stretched across the top. I thought "disgusting!" But then I thought "what a great deal! You buy the donut and get two strips of bacon for free." So, dear Yelpers, I have to tell you, Fred Meyer's maple bacon donut was divine. It was crispy and soft and sweet and salty and fatty and sugary and doughy and chewy and everything all at the same time. And it haunted me for the rest of my stay in Fairbanks.

Yelp
This is definitely one-stop shopping but it gets crowded!! I really like the wide variety of conventional and specialty brands they have. I was really impressed with their organic packaged food, but they could use more organic produce. Definitely affordable food here and a lot of other things to pick up if you need :)
google avatar

April Q.

Yelp
Okay.. this place gets super busy on the weekends, so plan on lots of navigating through carts and people and the checkout lines, too. Organic produce section is pretty good: kale, beets, carrots, greens, apples, pears.. and more! Health food aisle is pretty good considering you're in Fairbanks and they still carry the brands I love (Jason, Barleans, Nordic Naturals, Alba Botanica, as well as lots of popular and not so popular organic food brands). I visited the fish area and got some black cod and king salmon and the prices were $14-17/lb.. a bit cheaper than the $20-something I pay for fresh Alaskan fish at home, but, duh, we're in AK. I like the small carts.. their bathrooms are clean.. their self-checkout software BLOWS.. but still a good place for me to stock up for my weeks of travel.

Yelp
Freddie's rocks. One-stop shopping, for sure! Fred Meyer has just about everything; groceries, deli, clothing, home furnishings, recreational equipment, toys, electronics, gardening supplies, liquor/wine/beer, drugs... all at reasonable prices. Some items might be slightly cheaper at Walmart, but then you'd have to actually shop at a Walmart (which I can't do without a guilty conscience and maybe even a bag over my head). The prices here are more than what I'm used to paying for goods at home in Western WA, but that seems to be true everywhere in the Great State of Alaska. Located near the airport and the hotel we were staying at, my party made several visits to this store for everything from hot coffee and snacks to liquor and souvenirs to bring home. The store was clean and bright, the staff friendly and helpful. This location also has a Starbucks inside and a gas station (with, I believe, about the cheapest fuel prices in town) out in the parking lot.
google avatar

Solomon S.

Yelp
Get all my fresh stuff there, bread, fruits, veggies. And also home items that I find myself needing. Always have been helped by friendly staff. Has a Starbucks also. Upstairs viewing platform to eat or hangout.
google avatar

Lard Belly E.

Yelp
Nice, clean, store. I usually come here when I stay at the Sophs down the streeet. I came in on Valentines day and loved the atmosphere. Lots of happy people buying last minute bouquets and chocolates and everyone seemed in a genuinely happy mood. Will come again.
google avatar

T.L. T.

Yelp
I'm not impressed inside or out. There are better ones. But let's talk about the gas station. If you're getting assaulted or robbed at the Fred Meyer gas station on airport way, don't expect the people working there to help. We stopped in to get gas, and there was a screaming match between two people. It continued for 5 minutes, and I asked the dude in the booth watching in from 3 feet away if he was going to call the cops because it was getting bad. He claimed he couldn't. As I dialed 911 the guy and girl started fighting physically until we broke it up. Fred Meyer staff once again proves useless.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
One of the largest Freddies I've seen anywhere. We have eaten here many times at the deli and from the looks of it many others do also. They have a great souvenir section and all the rest that Fred Myers is noted for. The prices are reasonable and the check out doesn't have long lines like so many other stores now days.

Jen A.

Yelp
Fruit flies are free with purchase. I sent an inquiry as to why none of the employees could manage a transaction totally unrelated to fruit flies that is marketed as "so easy". Corporate hasn't even been able to figure out what the problem is and it's been three weeks. ONE phone call to the Old Steese location and my question was finally answered.
google avatar

Jill N.

Yelp
Twice now I've purchased meat that has turned out to be rotten. Latest incident was with chicken. Packaged 9/1/14, purchased 9/1/14 with a sell by date of 9/7/14. Was immediately refrigerated and remained there until 9/5/14. Opened the package and was assaulted by the reek of rotten chicken. Buyer beware. I know this can happen at any store, but I've never had this problem at any other store in town. Makes a person wonder about how meat is handled in the back. When you open your meat package, check the meat before you discard the UPC label. Since I had just opened the package and smelled the rot, I was able to save my UPC and get a refund. The customer service person was awesome when I went to get my refund and she is the only reason this store gets 2 stars. Corporate customer service is yet to respond to either of my two letters. Well, unless you count the canned initial reply.

Yelp
I stopped by for lunch as I do often and this time the service was terrible particularly Francisco the delivery worker that was supposed to be helping me, after waiting in line there was 2 people ahead of me it was my turn and in the middle of making my order Francisco put my food down and ask the. Guy behind me what he would like and started his order while mine was waiting to be completed by him. Francisco gets NO STARS I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else

Danielle L.

Yelp
Click list was a disaster! I arrived at my scheduled p/u time only to be told that my order wasn't ready and it would be ready in an hour. Naturally I was irritated after scheduling my day around my p/u time. I had nothing else to do except go home and wait. The staff told me he'd call me when my order was ready so after 2.5 hours of not hearing anything I called and was told that my order was in fact ready. I ventured back out at -30 to p/u my order only to be told I'd have to wait while they continued to process other people's orders. Seriously irritated that I wasted $5. Next time I'll spend that time doing my own shopping!!
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Big fan. Wish they had one in Sacramento. Loved off of their premade sandwiches and snacks when working in Fairbanks for the summer. Decent craft beer selection also.
google avatar

Veronica P.

Yelp
Let's talk about the rudeness from first, Starbucks employees to the gas station clerks. All within 30 minutes! First Starbucks with the 10 minute wait (for just a Green Ice tea) and as soon as I leave to put gas, the gas station clerk was just a ray of sunshine ((if you can't hear the sarcasm in my words..it's clearly there))
google avatar

Judy S.

Yelp
This review is just for the deli. I love that there is such a huge selection. 3 or 4 different salad/food bars, and then the deli counter. I ordered the orange chicken which was good but too much breading. My daughter ordered the smoked turkey & cheese sandwich which was really good. And reasonably priced. So far the better food choice in Fairbanks than all the restaurants we've been too! So sad!

Stephen P.

Yelp
Terrible e-mail and phone support for Clicklist where you can allegedly pick up groceries you order. Spent 4 hours not getting the problem fixed and talked to more than 5 people. Sent three e-mails without reply.
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
I'm not the biggest fan of Fred Myers. They have the same type of items scattered about the store. Hard to find things. They do however have a pretty good selection of produce. You're going to be able to get just about everything you need from this store at a good price.
google avatar

Lya A.

Yelp
Love coming here!! It has everything anyone needs and always has great sales, remember to sign up for there member card so you can save on there gas after every $100 you spend! There seasonal things are so cool as well.

Lily L.

Yelp
Great for essentials and more. If you forgot to pack at all, just go there and buy everything you need. Was here during a huge discount on clothes and shoes. There are fresh foods, cooked foods, pre cooked foods, frozen foods, etc. There was one aisle of souvenirs. Head there at the beginning of your trip and stock up on snacks and drinks!
