Fred’s at Barneys NY Review - Upper East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Very few restaurants in Manhattan can offer you the opportunity to eat a $36 lobster salad out of a $3,000 handbag. Fred’s at Barneys is one of them. Will they actually serve you the food in the bag? No. But if you spend the money downstairs, who’s to say what you can or can’t do with your Céline? That’s the free market at its finest, and if you’re shopping/eating here, you may have been the beneficiary of some free market economics. The real question is, why on earth are we reviewing a famous department store restaurant? Because it’s hilarious, that’s why. Nowhere else will you find such an entertaining mix of blown-out 55-going-on-22 moms, burnt-out post-college city natives, and people who think they look like celebrities but most definitely aren’t. Fred’s isn’t so much about the food as the atmosphere - but the hand-cut french fries are arguably more of a reason to go to Barneys than Barneys itself. Their green goddess salad dressing is also a supernatural enigma, making otherwise boring vegetables like pea shoots seem appetizing (see: chopped chicken salad.) If you do end up at Fred’s, split one of the house made pizzas and a salad with the table, or the delicious chicken soup. There for dinner? Braised pork bolognese. Just don’t make eye contact with any of the regulars. Legend has it you’ll turn into stone. Food Rundown Estelle’s Chicken Soup Listed on the menu as “grandma’s recipe to cure colds & stay thin,” we initially thought this was just soup with a side of criticism. Turns out it’s quietly one of the best chicken soups in NYC, and beats any Jewish deli by a mile. Fred’s Chopped Chicken Salad Fred’s is famous for all of its overpriced salads, but this is one of our favorites. A creamy mix of avocado, onion, tomato, string beans & pea shoots with diced grilled chicken. Pro tip: get it with the green goddess dressing instead of balsamic. Oak Street Salad (AKA The $36 Lobster Salad) A $36 lobster salad that’s also got some shrimp, crab, and green goddess dressing mixed in to make you feel like you got your money’s worth of crustaceans. Prosucuitto, Arugula and Parmesan Pizza All of the pizzas here are small, doughy, and actually pretty delicious. Maybe don’t get one as a stand-alone, but instead order as a side to split with salads and your table will be happy. Get some fries too while you’re at it. Crispy Ciabatta Verdura Crunchy, steaming, hot house-made baked ciabatta smothered in veggies, sun-dried tomato pesto, and mozzarella. Why not? Braised Pork Bolognese Only available for dinner. This thick pappardelle comes smothered in San Marzano tomatoes and slow-cooked, red-wine-braised pulled pork. It’s excellent. Spaghetti and Meatballs Nothing crazy, just a tasty classic. A perfect mix of light tomato sauce, gooey cheese, and steaming meatballs - for lunch or dinner." - Ariel Feldman

Today, I visited Wonder, a food establishment that offers a selection of dishes from various restaurants and renowned chefs. Upon entering, the space features a modern minimalist design with a touch of mid century inspiration. The functional layout includes an open, uncluttered area with digital ordering screens to enhance convenience and ease of use. We ordered from Fred’s Meat & Bread, opting for fries and the Spicy Grilled Chicken Sandwich, which comprises sliced chicken, carrots, daikon, jalapeños, cucumbers, and spicy aioli. While the fries were somewhat dry and firm, the Spicy Grilled Chicken Sandwich was exceptionally flavorful, with a balanced spiciness reminiscent of a Thai-style sandwich. The staff was attentive, friendly, and quick to share their favorite menu items. Overall, if you're seeking a quick, satisfying meal with decent quality food and minimal preparation, Wonder presents a convenient option.

I ordered using Wonder app so throwing a bone with service and atmosphere ratings of 3 out of pity. Food.... ick. Cheesesteak? More like chopped dog food. Disgusting appearance and horrible flavor. No option for toppings like mushrooms / peppers / hots. Any of that could have helped mask the poor quality of the meat. If this is what ATL considers a cheesesteak, I suggest they move farther north. Fries were overcooked. I'm down for a crispy fry but not overcooked with a tinge of burnt taste. Save your money and time and order from Yum's on 14th. Consistently better value and taste. ZERO stars. I definitely wish I had read reviews before dropping coins on this rubbish.

Google
They probably buy their positive reviews on GrubHub to reflect a 4.5 rating because it is no where near that. Soggy sandwich not close to $17 worth. Soggy… flavorless… just not even close to how it was advertised. Don’t spend money here

I would have liked the other half of my sandwich. The portion of fries I got was super small and cold. Lucky they have a style of fries that holds up to getting cold. But for$20 this was disappointing AF

Ordered. 4th time. Korean cheesesteak. The 3 prior have been so good. Tonight? The meat was gray and it tasted like fish sauce. AWFUL Won’t ever order again. The taste was disgustingly. Fries were v good.

Google
Good food, good portions, and great customer service (meaning it's not a robot or just someone offering a refund but actually listening and commenting on the feedback you give to them). I ordered a Korean cheesesteak sandwich and garlic fries for the first time. Wish there were more kimchi so it tastes more Korean than a regular cheesesteak, garlic fries were given a huge portion for the price and were very crunchy even if it wasn't hot when it arrived. Will definitely try other menus for sure.

Google
The fries portion is disrespectful, and half the advertised amount. Burger a slightly more gourmet shake shack.

Yelp
We ordered cheesesteaks and fries from the Scarsdale location tonight. The Old Bay Fries didn't have the Old Bay seasoning on them. They also looked nothing like the photo on the menu. The menu showed fries that were shoestring and cooked perfect, and of course the had seasoning on them. The fries that arrived were much bigger and pretty flavorless. They also had that horrible coating that frozen supermarket fries have when they're labeled "crispy." Not good. At all. (My photo shows the full order before I tried to eat two of the fries. Such small portions!) The cheesesteaks were okay, but we won't be ordering again.

Yelp
I like the concept of this service, especially when you have a group or even a couple who wants different things. I ordered pickup on a weekday close to 12pm, by order was ready in 10 minutes. I received a text when it was ready. The pricing isn't ridiculous for nyc given the restaurants/chefs. I ordered a shroom cheesesteak from Fred's meat & bread. The bread was soft, the steak must have been so chopped I had a hard time distinguishing it from the mushroom. When I picked it up, the pickup store seemed clean.

Yelp
Ordered a cheese steak sandwich from new Hanover location. Service was quick and friendly but the sandwich was without a doubt the most disgusting sandwich I have ever had in NYC. Bread was soggy, the meat looked pale and the overall appearance left a lot to desire. Would not recommend the sandwich

Yelp
Went here tonight and after a 20 minute walk got to the counter to be told I could only order online. Was told it was quick. Just download the app and order. I told the guy standing before the register that this was just silly. I just wanted a cheeseburger and fries. Downloaded the app and the ordering was multi step and not intuitive. Then they wanted my name and email. Then they wanted more contact info. Then they wanted credit card info It's at this point that I told the guy standing by the register that because their process truly sucked I was gone. Don't bother with a place that cares so little about their customers. I'm sure they'll respond with some lame apology but that does not get me the cheeseburger I wanted. And lame apologies are just tasteless
