Longtime Freedom Park Trail Mexican Spot Across the Street Closes [Update] - Eater Atlanta

"Longtime Mexican spot Across the Street and its adjacent neighborhood market located steps from the Freedom Park trail in the Old Fourth Ward have apparently closed, according to a report by What Now Atlanta. The restaurant, owned by Ali Wild and her partner Lana Banks, opened in 2007 on Highland Avenue and was known for its strong margaritas, quirky decor, and riffs on Mexican fare. Many dishes on the menu were deemed gluten free or vegetarian." - Beth McKibben

Fairly Well maintained. Two fenced areas for large or small dogs. In general- responsible pet owners who clean up after their pets. Everyone has been very friendly. I love how large the big dog area is - it goes all the way up to the street corner where there are a few trees for shaded area. There’s An awning near the gate and several benches throughout. And there’s a dog wash outside.

Google
Great dog park! 🐾 Spacious and well-maintained with separate areas for large and small dogs, which I really appreciated. My pup had the best time running around off-leash and socializing with other dogs. There are shaded benches for humans and water stations for the dogs — super convenient on hot days. The park felt safe and clean, and the other pet parents were friendly. Definitely one of my favorite dog parks in Atlanta. We’ll be back again soon! 🐶💙

Google
Large dog park is grassier than some dog parks in the city, but there’s definitely a fair bit of mud. That would be fine, but I spent 40 minutes picking up broken glass and bits of metal and plastic after a heavy rain. Unfortunately not all that uncommon in city dog parks, particularly those so close to a busy road.

Google
Very nice off leash park for larger dogs. Plenty of space to run and play. However, can be very muddy after a rain.

Google
Lots of space. Water fountain works. Separate lots for bigger and smaller dogs. Really great space four our three medium/big dogs.

Google
Great dog park with separate sections for large and small dogs with benches throughout. And nice shadedareasas well..

Google
Hands down the best dog park ITP! Tons of room for the dogs to run, plenty of tennis balls provided by the park/community, and a water faucet and bowl for the pups! It’s a mix of grass and clay-like dirt, so dress for the outdoors, but there are a few benches in shaded areas to relax and keep an eye on your dog(s). They have a small dog area too! They are in the process of making tons of improvements to the park, so keep coming and get involved if you can!

Google
My poodle loves this park . The atmosphere is peaceful and for yhe most part, owners are very attentive to pets. One small hole between where gates connect at rear of small dog section. Easy fix. I will be contacting someone today about it.

Yelp
I enjoy this dog park more than Piedmont dog park, it feels like it has better vibes. Additionally, it has parking unlike the Piedmont dog park (although people do park where they are not allowed). As always, you still get a mix of dogs/owners, but the actual dog park is great, with ledges, shade structures, watering fountains, a place to rinse your dog, and usually lots of parking. They have planted some new trees and are adding new additions to the park as I write this, so it seems there is investment in park upkeep and improvement.

Yelp
2 separate parks; one for big dogs and one for small ones. Plenty of poop bags available. Well kept!!

Yelp
I popped by here on a whim when I saw it on my GPS. It is a fairly nice park. Provides water stations and poop bags. The only thing I wish they could improve is the parking. The one thing that soured our visit was seeing a woman bring her tiny little Yorkie into the very much populated LARGE DOG yard which is *very clearly* marked and seeing it get freaking mauled (probably to death) by a pitbull. Absolutely traumatizing. Please don't bring your small dogs into the big dog yard people. It's common sense. Poor baby..and PLEASE WATCH OUT FOR THIS DOG AND HIS OWNER- THEY ARE REPEAT DOG ATTACK OFFENDERS!!! A tall African American man and a large/medium size tan brown pitbull with a harness.

Yelp
I initially thought it was a private dog park for the apartments/condos in the area. Glad to see there was an area for the big and small dogs. Grass at the time was just greening, so it was still low and even. There were sufficient benches for the owners. The only drawbacks were lack of signage to direct patrons to the park, and the parking lot is really small for the sizes of the play areas.

Yelp
We love the development and changes done for the park this year. Significant improvement than how it was before..! The trees provide nice shade; the mulch helps prevent mold and mud; the benches allow you to rest while your dog gets their energy out.. Overall great environment to let your pup loose. Any donations made to this place help maintain it--just take a look at the signage if you would like to contribute to where your dog plays.

Yelp
Doesn't look like a real park for the dogs but has a big and little dog respective sections. they have a box of tennis balls as well. not much seating but i guess it's a dog park after all. tends to be busy and the community seems really kind. water fountain and cleaning spray for dirty dogs with a hose. parking can be tight and off road.

Yelp
A lovely and popular dog park in between O4W and Inman Park. While it's not as large as the Piedmont Dog Park, it's still a really nice size. There are separate areas for large dogs and small dogs (generally over or under 30 pounds), and both are well maintained and offer plenty of space. In the summer, there are pools for the dogs, so it can get a little muddy, but generally there is good grass and mulch coverage. There are generally tennis balls and stocked poop bags available. While dog parks have some inherent risks, we've felt that this park is generally very safe and welcoming. The vast majority of dog owners are responsible and actively monitor and pick up after their dogs. The amount of space also allows for dogs to choose their own adventure, whether that's playing with a big group, or just getting in some sniffs and sunshine. There is a decent amount of parking, and a good group of friendly "regulars."

Yelp
This was my first dog park experience. Upon entrance I received a friendly greeting. I dog sit my neighbor's dog (my God dog) so I thought this would be a great way for Duke to get some fresh air & play with other dogs. The other dog owners made us feel comfortable. There were two separate parks across from each other & clear signage for small and large dogs. We were in the small dog park that provided ample space for running. There were benches for dog owners to relax while observing. The water station & plastic kids pool were a thoughtful touch. Tennis balls were available for a game of catch. There were also stations with plastic clean-up bags. Owners were considerate & cleaned-up after their dogs. Free parking was easy to find in the entrance area on both sides or the nearby street. I would always see the dogs as I drove down (John Lewis) Freedom Parkway & now I can say I've visited. And what a creative name for the dog park....Barkway...lol. Duke & I will definitely return for a some fun!

Yelp
Another great place near the 'hood for Moose to romp off leash in a contained environment. Freedom Barkway in Old 4th Ward just opened and is fantastic. It came about when neighbors in O4W realized Piedmont Park dog park was too far to walk and that this stretch of land was underutilized. The off leash dog park is located behind the vintage shop "Desperate Houseware". The way to get in to the dog park is off of Highland Ave, but the park runs along a greenspace next to Freedom Parkway. There are fantastic views of downtown from the park. The dog park, like most, is divided into small dog and large dog sides. There are no water fountains for the pups yet, but there soon will be thanks to a successful kickstarter campaign. The park is a really nice edition to the area and is walkable from Cabbagetown which is quite exciting.

Yelp
So glad there's a local dog park for us to visit! The park is really easy to find, but we were only able to find off-street parking. Small and large dog areas are separated, but you can bring your small one to the larger "Big Dog" area at your own risk. The only drawback to this park this potentially having to deal with other dog owners who may lack common courtesy. Brought my small dog into the large area today, and she was immediately followed and mounted by a larger dog. When I asked the dog's owner if she could call her dog away, she told me to keep my dog in the small park. Beyond disrespectful patrons, this is a great park for dogs of all sizes.

Yelp
I used to love this place. It is close to home and the parking is free and close to the park. The problem with this park isn't actually the park itself. It's the owners who go there. Far too often, owners are not paying attention to their dogs or correcting their behavior. Also, people are starting to bring smaller dogs into the big dog area and are surprised when big dogs are rough on them. Lately, I've ended up leaving after just a few minutes because the lack of owner attention is just annoying and has made it a lot less fun for my dog to play there.

Yelp
I love this park. However people are getting lazy and now parking their cars inside the barriers. Only a matter of time before this is an issue and something happens. Also the amount if erosion and holes is a little concerning. Not sure there is any way to fix it however. But I love the community support!

Yelp
Lots of room to run and play! There are always plenty of other dogs here. Fantastic location. Benches spaced throughout the park and just enough shady areas.

Yelp
We normally go to the dog park in Oakhurst but decided to try this one. It was great with lots of grass. It did seem a little slick on the hill because it had rained the day before, but overall, the dog enjoyed it. I only noticed one bench, but it was so cold that morning, we were jumping around to stay warm anyway. We'll be back when we need a change of scenery. It's a great use of this space.

Yelp
I've been bringing my dog here since the park opened, we both enjoy it very much. It's large and has benches, trash cans, and doggie bags for poop. It also has a water station, and a smaller park for small dogs. The problem of owners not paying enough attention to what their dog is doing can found in any dog park. Just like a child, letting your attention stray, even for a moment, can be dangerous. I've had no trouble at Freedom Barkway.

Emma R.

Yelp
Very often I find that the humans at this park are not attentive to their dogs. I've had many incidences where dogs have been too aggressive and the owners didn't interject. I like it otherwise.

Yelp
First of all, I thought this park was pretty hard to find. There is only one entrance and it is on Highland. This is a huge design flaw because if you come from the trails or off of John Wesley Dobbs or Boulevard you need to walk all the way around to get in. (I've read the reasoning for constructing the park this way on their website and while it makes sense, it is still a minor inconvenience). Second, while it was nice that the park was split into big/small dog areas the small dog section is in pretty bad shape. The grass is really overgrown and I refused to let my dog run in there for fear of ticks or other surprises hiding in there. In contrast, the big dog park looks really taken care of. The grass is short and appeared recently cut. I'm not sure who oversees that (if it's volunteer based or there is someone in charge) but I don't get the disparity. Last, there are no water stations (as mentioned), but I didn't mind because that's pretty normal at the dogs parks I've been to in the past. So if you have a medium-large sized dog I'd definitely recommend, but if your pup is under 30 lbs I'd enter at your own risk!

Yelp
What a great place. Such friendly people and friendly pups. My dog always has a great time. Most people are responsible and clean up after their pets. It's very large and plenty of space for your pooch (big or small) to run around. Support your local parks! They have great ways to donate and put on events locally as well.

Jean M.

Yelp
I'm glad I found this park but people have dog got to stop coming here and bringing the small dogs into the big dog area and then getting mad when their dogs are trampled. If your 10 pound dog wants to play with my 60 pound dog that's fine but you can't get mad when things get rough. That's why there's a big and small dog park. Also the parking sucks, needs a proper parking lot it's very hard to find street parking. And more shade because it gets HOT.

Yelp
This is an excellent park for you and your pup! I've been to this park a couple dozen times and I have never had a bad encounter with another owner's dog. Everyone is really friendly and keeps a close eye on their dog. If you're nervous about your little pup getting trampled on, have no worries! The park is divided into two areas for small and large dogs. Lastly, for all the ladies out there... I recommend coming to the park near the end of the week between 4-6PM or on the weekend... that's when all the hot dudes show up...

Yelp
One word... grass!!! More grass than wood chips! Great park in a fairly convenient area. Dogs and people seem generally cool.
