"One of Asheville’s only Neapolitan-style pizza spots, Fresh Wood Fired takes the pizza-making process seriously, from sourcing some of its cheeses locally to an oven that burns at 800 degrees. With a background in the art world, owner Mark Tomczak opened Fresh in a quirky River Arts District location and added an undeniable flair to his toppings, including the Alaskan with smoked salmon and a white pizza with blue cheese, pears, and walnuts." - Eric Barton

Wood fired pizza is my favorite (unless I'm in Chicago! :-) Fresh West has a large gaudy oven for firing their pizzas and it does exactly what it needs to do We arrived for an early dinner at 5pm and there was only one other table of guests. We decided on our pizzas and ordered at the counter. After ordering you take a numbered stand to set on your table so they know where to bring your food. It's not a big place but this ensures you get what you ordered. There is indoor and outdoor seating. We weren't at the table long when the pizzas arrived! Talk about fast service. The pizzas are 12 inch pies for $17.00 each. For five people we ordered 3 pizzas. Two Scarface pizzas with Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Spicy Salami with Mozzarella on Red Sauce. We also order one Florentine pizza with Olive Oil Base, Spinach, Mozzarella, Fresh Tomatoes, Bacon, Chicken and Feta. We enjoyed both! While the 12 inch pies were a little expensive they were delicious and served up in a hurry. Good pizza!

Love this place. Excellent pizzas and salads and quick and friendly service. Several bonus points for having a vegan cheese option. My youngest is allergic to dairy and he didn’t have to miss out! Will definitely be back.

Nice and cozy pizza joint with a good location next to the art district. The entry way and ordering counter are a tad crowded… with the ordering counter situated right at the entry door. The dry stores situation has me scratching my head. It’s around the side of the restaurant, in a wooden shed. I watched the staff unload a fresh delivery of floor and couldn’t help but notice the situation. The entry door is unsealed. The shed is not insulated or sealed. Who knows what kind of critters are in there….

Friendly ambiance, delicious pizza, good value for quality. My boyfriend and I split a Napoli pizza and it was great - we subbed out the brie for ricotta and they were happy to oblige. Great place for casual dining in the River Arts District!

This place has great potential!!! A few suggestions for improvement: 1. When you sell a $6 beer, make sure it's full. If there's a head when you pour it, keep filling until the glass overflows the head, or wait until it settles and top it off. 2. Fill your cups at least halfway with ice, especially when it's 100* F out. Get a soda fountain, why have the "save the planet" attitude and have drinks by the bottle with a recycling bin next to the fridge? Skip all that and just have a soda fountain. You've already got washable cups and biodegradable straws. 3. Provide better value. $17 for a 12" pizza with few toppings is way too much. Take the same amount of dough and roll a 14" pizza. Double the toppings (not the sauce) and you'll have something. The crust is delicious and you've got good combos of toppings for good pies. 4. Haircuts, shaves, and showers. It's one thing to have the grungy gen X/Z yuppie style, but when you're preparing food, you need to be clean, and clean cut, ALWAYS.

The bread appetizer was incredible, artisan flatbread with olive oil and seasonings. And the pizza was the best I’ve had in a long time and came out very quickly. I got cheese pizza with spinach and feta but there were lots of great options

Google
great service and nice outdoor seating. the cheese sticks and caesar salad were awesome. we got the rose pizza and it wasn’t our personal fave…garlic was a little overpowering and prefer a dough-ier crust. but still had a really good experience!

I love to support our RAD businesses. Good flavor, but crust was really burned.

Yelp
Our family of four loved it. You order right when you come in the door and they give you a number. The cashier was nice and witty. They have a few inside tables and more tables available on the covered patio. We had the bbq chicken pizza, Scarface minus the spicy salami, and the spinach salad side. Both pizzas were great and there always a nice char on the crust (but not too overpowering). I liked that the chicken in the bbq pizza wasn't dried out like some places tend to do. The side salad is only $2 less than the entree portion, so I'm wondering how big the entree is because the side was pretty big. The flavors of the salad and dressing went well and I loved the local made feta. Overall, this is a solid bet for a quick bite.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place after a morning in the river arts district. Was so pleasantly surprised at how great this pizza was! I would come back here any time I'm in the area

Eun L.

Yelp
Decent pizza place. They have 12" pizzas with the thinner crusts that I prefer. As I'm a meat lover, I ordered the Scarface pizza: pepperoni, sausage, and salami. I did want a little veggie so I subbed the salami with onions. Husband got the Drunken Clam: olive oil, clams, roasted garlic, and bacon. We shared the Tuscan salad with the dressing on the side. Workers were friendly and attentive. Food came out very fast. Pizza came out very quickly, less than ten minutes. The salad was a nice portion. Glad I asked for the dressing on the side as it was heavy but tasty. My pizza had mostly pepperoni and a few sprinkles of sausage. The crust was nice and crispy. Had a good amount of mozzarella cheese. It was a bit too saucy for me. It was a decent pizza. My husbands pizza also had a nice crispy crust, although a little thinner. However, we really couldn't taste the clam. We have had a clam pizza in the past with a nice strong flavor. If we hadn't known it was a clam pizza, we never would've known. We also couldn't see or taste the bacon. We ended up adding salt to both of our pizzas which helped. We sat outside on the cute, covered deck to eat. They hung stringed lights over picnic type tables. It was a comfortable place to just chill and enjoy the company your with. My husband thought the place was just average. While not a favorite, I would consider eating here again if they had more meat based pizzas. The Scarface was the only meat pizza. I no no no k

Yelp
We first ate here on a whim, and random google search, whilst on our honeymoon, in 2018 it was awesome. Visited again a year later, and now tonight, 5/2/2024. AMAZING pizza! Highly recommended. Lots of salads and other items but we just got a sausage and pepperoni pie. Crust was perfect, red sauce with great flavor. Very reasonable price when compared to others we saw online. Will come back anytime we visit Asheville!

Rob A.

Yelp
Locally recommended. The Scarface pie was all that. Sausage , pepperoni with a medium crust. Great pizza. Looking forward to trying other pizzas.

Rod S.

Yelp
** VEGAN REVIEW** If you're a vegan, eat here. If you're not a vegan, I think you'd enjoy it, too. There were lots of toppings for meat eaters. This is a delightful restaurant in the River arts district. I was able to park for free right across the street. I'm sitting outside on their covered porch enjoying the nice weather. Thin crust, wonderful pizza. Wish I lived closer.

Michael C.

Yelp
Great food. Very quick. Good selections. Beautiful pizza oven. Would recommend. Thanks for making our visit great!

Joshua S.

Yelp
Traveling home through Asheville, my family requested pizza for dinner. I did a little research and found this place. It was perfect. We got in and out quickly. The food was delicious, and the staff made us feel at home. We would love to go back.

Ed F.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall joint! We had the Madonna Pizza Had a bit of entertainment with two small black bears climbing behind the restaurants outdoor seating area. No harm no foul!

Kether S.

Yelp
No seasoning in the sauce it taste just like straight canned tomato paste Salad was good Olives are okay Cute outdoor cat

Shamie D.

Yelp
Great staff and authentic wood-fired pizza. A small but decent draft selection and an outdoor covid appropriate patio! Order at the register and enjoy your drink! Pies can be split for 2 adults plus a salad :) unless you are famished.

Stephanie J.

Yelp
This wood fired pizza spot was a convenient stop on our way to grab a few drinks out around the area. I selected a beer from the cooler and we ordered the bruschetta, a side caesar salad and the scarface pizza. All of the food was really good, I liked our pizza selection but would opt for a different one next time. It's worth checking out if you are in the area.

Kathryn R.

Yelp
Fresh Wood Fired Pizza is a great pizza spot in Asheville. I went there with some friends this summer after spending some time shopping in Asheville. Servers were very friendly and conversational--they helped a lot with recommendations for pizzas there. I got the Chevre pizza and thought it was very good. Honestly, my favorite part of my meal was the lemonade I got. It was sweet but also adequately sour, and I loved it. Overall ambiance was nice and pretty chill, the inside is very nicely decorated too. Try Fresh Wood Fired Pizza if you're ever in Asheville!

LaDeanne D.

Yelp
We stopped in for pizza with our pups on a Saturday evening. This time we just had pizza but it was so good that I can't wait to try more from the menu. My husband and I split one pizza and we were each wanting just a little more. I think if we split a side salad with the pizza, it will be just the right amount of food for us. The pizza was delicious!! One note, if you bring your dog, there is a dirt path to the left of the building that you walk up to get to the outdoor patio. I wasn't sure how to bring them in at first but the person at the register was very helpful.

Nyckie P.

Yelp
Best veggie pizza I've ever had. The crust is excellent. Also ordered a kids pizza and the crust was shaped like an animal face. Very cute.

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
Best pizza place in town. Wood fired pizza Fresh sauce and dough. Perfect thickness.

Leah Y.

Yelp
The place a super cute and the oven is beautiful. However, I was disappointed with the pizza. It did not have the wood fired taste I was hoping for. Maybe it was an off day so I will give the place a second chance.

Deb D.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Super fast service. Highly recommend in the Asheville arts district.

Carolyn R.

Yelp
Amazing and delicious options! Their mosaicked wood stove was a piece of art! And the people were helpful and friendly.

Meena P.

Yelp
Looking for a place to get a quick bite in the River arts district, this place stood out as it was all green ! Great wood fired pizzas . So fresh tasting and great toppings and names ! They had a bunch of appetizers and salads and sandwiches and also pastas. Also lots of beers and wine. The garden veggie salad was amazing and fresh, of course! Lots of veggies and great dressing. We got the veggie delight and the Scarface pizza, Scarface was full of meat ! Lots of kinds and the veggie as you'd expect! Both really great and the sauce was really good. Also had the baked bread which is the pizza dough cooked and served. I had it with marinara but typically it's sold with olive oil and herbs. The dough is great and thin and crunchy outside soft inside. They also had Prosecco so gets my vote! Nice patio seating and great fast service. Lots to chose from here at fresh west. Gave us a great boost for the rest of the day !

Debbie M.

Yelp
Best Pizza in Asheville! The Pizza is Always Fresh and Delicious! We have been going there for years. The owners are Amazing & Welcoming. Definitely Definitely Recommend!

Shaun W.

Yelp
First timer from Atlanta. Heard good reviews about this place. It's in the arti First timer from Atlanta. Heard good reviews about this place. It's in the Artsie side of Asheville. I had the personal -the Sicilian. Very fresh and crispy! I'll be back for more!

Jack F.

Yelp
I agree with most of the reviews that say the pizza is good. We were in town and this looked like a good place for my wife and I to have something we both liked. Then we arrived. This is definitely NOT a touristy destination. The place is divey bordering on crudy. The cashier/order counter is right inside the door. The menu is in chalk behind the cashier. The menu doesn't give a clue about drinks or dessert. The drinks are in a cooler at the back of the customer. Drinks are canned or bottled. You can purchase bottled water or get tap water from one of two large IGLOO coolers on a table with tea, and other drinks. Service was quick, and the Scarface pizza was good. I would have liked more sausage, but there was plenty of pepperoni. Customers buss their own tables. The price for one Scarface pizza, olive bowl, one can of Diet Coke and a small Ceasar salad was $42+. Pricey for the food and atmosphere.

Gene G.

Yelp
Came in and ordered counter service. Based on suggestions on Yelp we went with the scarface pizza. Good choice. Liked the crust, sauce and Italian sausage and pepperoni. Had the cheesy garlic sticks that was basically a cheesy garlic pizza cut into stripes. Nothing fancy but still good. Came with a choice of marinara or ranch dressing. Went with the marinara sauce. Sorry, but nothing special. Have had better marinara. Would I eat here again? Yes. Would I recommend it to friends and family? Maybe. Depends on what they want.

Teresa L.

Yelp
**2.5 stars** I honestly feel conflicted. Half of our pizzas were good and the other half, both Roses, were terrible. Kudos for offering a gluten free crust. My friend also really liked her pepperoni pizza. My other friend and I each got the Roses pizza, which is described as "Fresh Mozzarella, Red Sauce, Handpicked Basil and Roasted Garlic with Olive Oil." on their website. Fresh mozzarella is questionable and there's wes definitely not any handpicked basically, maybe some oregano? Highly disappointed in our Roses pizza. I'm not sure how I feel about this place; I wouldn't get the Roses again but I probably won't be back either.

Lisa M.

Yelp
We first tried their pizza at the location in Black Mountain and fell in love. We ended up ordering the Rose's Pizza with Gluten Free crust, sub Vegan Cheese and added Pepperoni, Ground Beef, bacon, Mushrooms and green peppers. Their crust is the second best GF crust I have ever had only second to an Italian place in NYC and their toppings especially the ground beef is so flavorful

Teri C.

Yelp
Ok this was one of the best pizza I have ever had We had the Rose's added pepperoni and prosciutto was amazing

Clark G.

Yelp
Holy Explitives! This place is outstanding. We had a cheese pizza for the kids and the chef's recommendation for us had blue cheese, mozz, pear, prosciutto, and walnuts. I would recommend this pizza to anyone I knew. I'd have a mega phone and stand on the street corner w/ a sign around my neck declaring to the world about this pizza and this place. The beer selection was limited but you can tell they are pure pro's bc they have Delirium in a 16oz can. (Best beer in world) These guys are legit legit and thanks for reading. Do us both a favor and head there and thank me later. CG-out!

Amanda I.

Yelp
Really nice pizza! Cooked so perfectly. Needs more salt and it's too expensive. The sausage is the best.

Zee M.

Yelp
This is the kind of pizza that hits the spot. We're a huge fan of wood fire pizza and this place doesn't disappoint. Menu is simple but has variety. Order the bread (delicious, comes with an oil and spice sauce for dipping, veggie delight, and scar face. So flavorable and delicious. Minimal sitting indoors and outdoors. We sat outside bc it was a beautiful day. Location is great! Parking across the street. Would definitely be back to try other pizzas.

Joy B.

Yelp
I love surprises and this little restaurant was tucked into the Pink Dog arts district. It is very unassuming from the outside. We received a warm welcome and great service. I ordered a Greek salad and I ordered the small size. It was enormous and freshly made. Lots of olives, Feta cheese, fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers. The dressing was light and tasty. I started out with it on the side, but somehow it was so good, I used it all. I want to go back and try their pizzas. They looked excellent. This is not the kind of place you go into for the ambiance, but for great food and excellent service I would definitely give them a try.

Michael H.

Yelp
Every eatery I have tried In Asheville is amazing and this pizza spot is good, the Greek salad is delicious and the pizza, OMG!!!!

Tim K.

Yelp
Stopped in while shopping down in the River Arts area. Seated quickly and service was consistently prompt throughout the dining. Location was very clean with open area for food prep. Started off with an entree sized garden salad to split. The salad was huge and very fresh. Large portions of fresh tomatoes and peppers topped it off. The blue cheese dressing and balsamic vinaigrette were both obviously homemade and excellent. Pizza is wood fired and made very fresh. The crust was well done. Lots of cheese. Could have used a bit more sauce and the prosciutto topping was fairly skimpy but an overall solid pizza for the price. Would definitely come back if down in the area again.

Phillip G.

Yelp
Loved it. Pizza is truly fresh! Garlic cheese bread had pieces of crushed garlic. Pizzas had crushed tomatoes and fresh basil. Cheese board great!

Jo S.

Yelp
If you are visiting the cool River Arts District in Asheville, and you're looking for a good place to eat, try Fresh Wood Fired Pizza West. We had lunch here, got seated immediately, we were starving and a pizza seemed like a nice idea. While we were admiring their cool pizza oven, covered with beautiful tiles (you are in the art district, after all), we decided to get the Chevre pizza, which is vegetarian ( great option for us after many meat courses we had for the holidays). The Chevre pizza is one of the best pizza-s we ever had, the goat cheese is smooth, a nice addition, the basil is fresh, the roasted bell peppers are flavorful and sun dried tomatoes couldn't be tastier. Everything blended well together. Great size for 2 people to share. The service wasn't too good, the waitress wasn't very nice, she was fast, barely dealt with us,never checked on us. They ran out of toilet paper in the restroom. So, these were a few minuses. For beers, I wish they had beers on tap, with all the cool, local breweries they have in Asheville. They have a decent selection of bottled beers, we went with the Gaelic Ale from the Highland Brewing Co., which is kinda like an amber ale. We wanted to try a local brew and we weren't disappointed. Great beer! They have a nice patio, would be lovely to eat there when the weather will be nicer. Fresh Wood Fire Pizza is hard to miss if you stroll around the area, the green painted walls will get your attention. Great place to grab a bite at. Their pizza-s are extraordinary, totally worth trying.

Sky M.

Yelp
Go here if you want pizza at all in Asheville ! My husband and I were in asheville for the weekend and we really wanted some good pizza ! After looking over all the high rated pizza places on yelp I was so confused because a lot of the ones with 5 stars or 4.5 stars and hundreds of reviews had very mixed reviews - most of the new reviews saying it was not good. But then this little place popped up and even just looking at the pictures I knew this place was gonna be amazing ! Even though it did not have many reviews . The pizza was amazing . My husband and I split one pizza and it was so good we literally had to get another one. They make their dough from scratch and all of the ingredients were quality . All of the workers were so so nice . The owner / manager was the one we talked with most and he was so kind and incredible . And the pizza is wood fire so it's just out of this world . Seriously you have to go here and spread the word about this place too! They also make lemonade in house and it was so good . The atmosphere was cute and quaint - it wasn't the cutest place ever to look at but who cares because all you'll be looking at is your next slice of pizza . It was so so so delicious . Oh also the pizzas are one size and you could definitely eat one pizza by yourself if you're really hungry or split it between two !

Tina C.

Yelp
Good pizza, very good. Too bad the cashier seemed annoyed that we were ordering. We ordered 6 pizzas, the small dining room was empty, and everything we did or said was met with scowls and eye rolling. Dude, get another job if you hate your life so much.

Brian K.

Yelp
I'm not a gymnast, nor should you need to be to eat this pizza, but be prepared to do an injury-free backflip when you take your first bite of this particularly phenominal, handcrafted pizza. Allow me to start with the "Je ne c'est quoi" of their sauce. it has a particular form of umami that can only be obtained by the use of San Marzano tomatoes. I took one bite, and my tastebuds began digging through my internal rolodex of flavors and I shouted, outloud, in the tiny restaurant, SAN MARZANO!? The chef, from behind the wall shouted back, "YEP". It's a flavor that is unmistakingly full of warmth and comfort. Why almost no other pizza place uses these delectable tomatoes in their sauce, befuddles me. What a way to start. 5-stars on that alone, but there"s more... much more... The hand made, fresh New York style crust was spot-on. The owner chosen combinations of ingredients on their "named" pizzas are pure art. Now on to the "MUST HAVE" homemade olive, sundried tomato, roasted garlic side dish is the perfect way to customize and decorate your every bite. this is a participatory experience. I mean, who doesn't want the opportunity to design each flavor-packed bite? C'mon... you know you do. This makes the experience unique and personalized. it was so good that my Mom and I scarfed one down there, and then being giddy with satisfaction, ordered another one to take back to our hotel, out of fear of withdrawal symptoms from our experience. This pizza was like some kind of wholesome drug... and I don't even do drugs. All I know is that when in Asheville, I intend to subsist on this pizza and nothing else. Do yourself a favor that you'll congratulate yourself for and make it a point to go there. Words can't express the experience (but I certanly just tried to). Also, the owner is sweet as molasses. She's a super nice woman and deserves your business. Lastly, once we left town, I still long for this pizza. She has reset the bar for pizza for me... and it's a very high bar. Can I give it 10 stars? I'd like to... -bkabstract Artist and "Wood Fired Pizza" enthusiast

Yelp
Honestly the best local wood fired pizza place we've been to. And they have vegan cheese. We go there a lot and we're never. Disappointed Pizza is filling yet not so heavy for the belly either.

Kitty C.

Yelp
Three women, 3 salads, one pizza. Perfect. Seriously friendly to the GF and veg crowds, including vegans. Go. Eat. Do it.

Diane B.

Yelp
Delicious fire wood pizza! We walked twenty minutes to get this pizza and it was worth the walk! We ordered a side Caesar salad and pizza. The pizza was charred to perfect and the ingredients were all fresh! I couldn't have asked for a better salad pizza combination!

Gabriella C.

Yelp
I am a pizza snob and this is hands down the best pizza in Asheville. They have an authentic Italian pizza oven. The crust is thin and crispy and lots of topping to choose from.

Helen P.

Yelp
Yay! Our dairy-free daughter gets "cheese" pizza. They have vegan Daiya cheese. Super thin crust is tasty goodness. We are the Sicilian with added sausage. The basil/sausage combo is tremendous flavor. Wonderfully friendly staff answered questions and were immediately genuine people. I didn't feel "waited upon" but instead like I was a friend stopping in a friend's restaurant. The homemade lemonade is tart and tasty. Brewed sweet tea was fantastic. Perfect sweetness- not coma inducing sugary syrup. Thanks Wood Fired. Excellent lunch experience for our entire family. Oh- and the bathroom was clean which always gets 5 stars in my book. Thanks for keeping it clean!

Ted E.

Yelp
Nice folks, great location on Depot Street, and there's parking! Add that to just the best service, wonderful fresh salads and just amazing pizza. We love all their white pizzas, and just a wonderful crust.

Basak S.

Yelp
We ordered half Madonna & half baby blue pizza! both of them were really yummyyyy next time I want to try veggies...

Jay L.

Yelp
So glad we stumbled across this place online for our first night in Asheville. The wood fired pizza was perfect! They don't make it clear on their menu but they only offer one size pizza. Reading other reviews we ordered two pizzas for two people. We could have gotten by splitting one, but depending on how hungry you are hopefully this helps gauge how many to order. They are only open for carry out currently but the staff was so friendly. They are in a very cool warehouse artists colony space that looked really cool.

Shyann C.

Yelp
Such good pizza!!! We came here after kayaking and they had outdoor seating available. Personalized pizzas. I got one with goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes. I was impressed. they had a local beer as well that was delicious.

Sharon F.

Yelp
Went out of our way deliberately to enjoy pizza described on the website as "the Italian Naples tradition of transforming hand rolled dough into artisan bread with its characteristic bubbles and charring in the wood fired oven. The intense heat of a 800°F oven and wood smoke flavor and darken the dough. Please specify with your server if you DO NOT want much char on your pizza." Ours arrived very undercooked - raw and doughy- very disappointing given the description. Mid-afternoon, restaurant was empty so no excuse. Chef was dismissive and walked away when we told him.

Bob V.

Yelp
I strolled in with a big appetite after work, and received an authentically warm greeting. I decided on the Chica Bella pie, and didn't regret it. The crust was charred just a touch, and had a satisfying chewy texture. The pesto was robust and delish, and was partially covered with just the right amount of moz, accented by scattered pillows of creamy, beautifully delicate ricotta. The pie would have been very tasty had the chef simply stopped there. But no. After baking, this next-level beauty was fortified with toasty walnuts, then piled high with a couple handfuls of fresh, peppery arugula. BAM that's good! Minor point: pizza this refined deserves a better condiment than powdered Parmesan - freshly grated Parm would be a far better fit.

Brett R.

Yelp
My Girlfriend and I discovered this place on a weekend trip. It's perfect. This is quality pizza for those who care about quality pies. We will be back Sunday to pick some up for the ride home. Order the Sicilian add pepperoni! You're welcome ; ) Big Thank You to the team behind the scenes! Killer job.
