Why Expensive Salad Chains Are Booming | Eater

"Located on Lexington Avenue at 85th Street in a densely packed Upper East Side lunch corridor, this fast-casual concept emphasizes hyper-local, seasonal sourcing — even buying a Long Island farm to supply ingredients — as a way to stand out amid many similar salad spots." - Lisa Elaine Held

This is a sad looking bowl for $20. Counted 5 very small pieces of chicken. This entire bowl must be 10 grams of protein. You can go right across the street to Dig Inn and get a 50 gram protein bowl for the same price. First and last time trying fresh and co.

I had an incredible lunch at Fresh&Co on Lexington and 85th! I ordered the Chicken Shawarma (gluten-free) bowl with organic quinoa, avocado, feta, raw mushrooms, and a light balsamic vinaigrette also was added tomato salad, pickles, baba ghanousn, hummus, greek yogurt, blackened chicken —everything was super fresh and full of flavor. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and juicy, and the toppings were generous and well-balanced. The portion size was great for the price, especially with the $3 off deal. The staff was also really kind and efficient, and the place had a nice, relaxed vibe—perfect for a quick but healthy meal. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for something fresh, filling, and tasty. I’ll definitely be coming back!

This was my first time seeing and trying the food here. The first wow, for me, was the presentation of these culinary delights! The food just looked beautiful and delightfully delicious 😋. I had a platter with beautifu honey glazedl chicken breast with sesame seeds, roasted squash, roasted sweet potatoes (much better than sweet potato fries) and white rice and wild rice pilaf!! The roasted sweet potato melts in my mouth. Everything was absolutely amazing and delicious 😋. I will try them a few more times for consistency of this delicious food. The service is wonderful. You can dine or sit outside. It has a cheery atmosphere.

There are no ORGANIC FOOD options. Hot Lunch Chicken bowl: It’s served with two choices of veggie sides & choice of quinoa or rice medley ($14.70 with tax, May 2023 price). The chicken was hot, but the veggies and quinoa were room temperature. There seems to be a lack of quality control yet the staff were all present. The Brussel sprouts tasted rancid and old. You will have to fetch your own plastic utensils from a food station. This place apparently decided it’s too inconvenient to put one on your tray at check out. The staff all talk over all the food/salad etc. In none of my visits here did I see any management on site to oversee the food quality, which may explain why my experience was what it was was. All three of my visits here were the same experience. I’m afraid to come back.

Google
1st time at this location. While paying for my meal, my wife noticed a hair in my bowl. She told the girl at the register and the girl took it to one of the food preps. He took the hair while in the prep station and examined it thoroughly. Then asked me if I wanted a new bowl. (Huh!?, sir there was a foreign hair in my food!) He made the new bowl. And it was delicious and hair free. While eating an employee(possibly the manager or shift leader) asked us if everything was good. And she apologized for the prep cook's behavior. She said that she noticed him and again apologized for the hair and the prep cook..because of her is why I'm not leaving a total negative review.. we will be back to this location Oh for the record the hair was blonde. No one working there during my visit was blonde.

Google
My experience was such an amazing meal. Every thing was perfect, we'll done. Try it you will never regret your money and time . Even sitting there was very quiet . We'll worth my trip from jersey 🇯🇪 to NYC.

Google
Friendly environment I’ve been coming here for the past month. They have amazing tasty smoothies and sandwiches. It feels very family oriented here. Weston is an awesome manager/person here!

Google
We see the staff frequently & whether we order in person or for delivery (the food is healthy, fresh & delicious), they know our orders and make it very convenient. Managers Wuences, & Rahani and the staff are always professional, attentive & a pleasure to see or speak to.

Yelp
I stopped in here quickly before an appointment to grab a quick breakfast. The store wasn't crowded at all, and I was quickly able to place my order. The cook who took my order was friendly, however I noticed that although I placed my order first he began to work on orders of those who came in right after me. They seemed like regulars because they didn't have to share their order... he just got right to it. I watched as omelets and avocado toasts of people after me getting cooked and served while I had to continue to wait for my sandwich. As far as the sandwich was concerned, it was exactly what I ordered and it was good. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese on a croissant and it was your standard sandwich. Despite feeling slighted about having to wait additional time for my order, I have no complaints. I would come back if I was in the area because the food is definitely fresh as the name of the store suggests.

Yelp
The people who work here are really nice! If I could then 5 stars themselves, just would! The soup however looked a bit old. I still ordered chicken soup. Doesn't appear to be anything fancy, and the total was approximately $9/$10 for the large. Got the soup for my dad, he didn't say anything negative about it.

Yelp
Efficient and clean store for a quick meal or lunch in NYC. I had a green juice and a turkey sandwich. Both were good. Seems expensive but nothing that's not typical for the area.

Dean T.

Yelp
The only thing fresh was the bad attitude of the server. Food was stale and flavorless. Stay away'
google avatar

Chiana C.

Yelp
Food waswild rice texture. The crispy chicken, Mac and cheese, sweet potatoes were all good. The berrylicious smoothie had no taste, might as well have been water. The staff was pretty rude and impatient despite not being too busy.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for breakfast or lunch Delicious and healthy menu choices, friendly service with a smile.

Yelp
Good place if your in the neighborhood. Great sandwich selection. Can make your own salads. Place is clean. Good customer service. Also has grab and go, yummy Bircher muesli ,parfait.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the cleanest restaurants around. I ordered a green juice once a week and it's always so fresh and fulfilling. Thank you to the staff and manager V for aways being courteous to his customers . Will be going back!

Yelp
4 - Met Expectations Got a falafel grain bowl. Good portions for the price. Nice for a quick eat. Reasonably priced.

Linda F.

Yelp
Good fast courteous customer service and fresh vegan food eat in or take out.try the falafel veggie bowl with chimicurri avacado dressing and their mixed fruit salad

Yelp
I was charged $1 for tap water. Tap water I watched the employee get from the sink faucet! This is outlandish and criminal. Management needs to strongly rethink this policy or retrain employees on the correct procedures.
google avatar

Joel S.

Yelp
This is my favorite fast casual chain. It is, IMHO, better than Chopt or Sweetgreen. Choice of salads, hot entrees with sides and sandwiches. Service more cheerful than average. Prices are fair. Rudimentary outdoor seating. Good pseudo healthy casual meal.

Yelp
I gotta give it a 5 for a salad spot. Clean, neat, tons of options, reasonably priced. I went there on a Friday night just before closing. The staff was professional and polite and helped me make my selections. Oh, and nobody was cleaning up or breaking down stuff before closing time. Smart, cause several more customers came in and ordered. I will return I recommend. A five for a salad spot with tons of healthy options.

Berna R.

Yelp
We love their Santa Fe salad! Delicious combination of vegetables! Good & friendly service!
google avatar

Melanie K.

Yelp
A reliable place for casual, order-and-go food that's fresh and healthy. I had a salad that was a generous portion, and vegan split-pea soup - really tasty. I also like the pre-packaged options, like the baked goodies and dairy-free puddings.

Helen C.

Yelp
Buyer beware! We ordered 2 breakfast wraps and an ice tea and were charged over $35. I thought it odd, paid cash , was given my change but no reciept. I asked for a menu (to check the prices) but no prices were listed. Due to an issue with the food (see 2nd paragraph), we cancelled the transaction and asked for our money back. The manager asked for my receipt, I told him we were given none, and he suddenly switched from English to Spanish when talking to the woman who range us up. I saw that we were charged an unattribed extra $10.50. When asked, I was told that was for the ice tea. When pushed he acknowledged that it was supposed to be $2 and change. So they cheat. And we cancelled the order because the chorizo in the wrap was ice cold. Turns out it was neither " fresh " nor " just made ". To make matters worse, the woman told me it was cold because she didn't want the outside to burn. When faced with the choice of a burned outside or cold sausage in premade wraps, we opted for neither and got our money back.

Yelp
This location is on the corner of 85th and Lexington ave. And I happen to be in the neighborhood as they were opening. First I will say it is very clean as I watched a worker sweep air or perhaps dust. My desire was to get a salad for breakfast but I ened up with a smoothie, I believe called Super greens. It actually was pretty good and filling. There is hot tea, coffee, fresh juice among other items on the menu . I look forward to trying others thing during my next visit

Yelp
I love Fresh & Co!! Found out about this spot because I won a gift card and then I never turned back. Everything is super fresh (as implied by the name) and there is so much variety! I love that they have tons of options from salads, to the market bar, to sandwiches, and more, you will never get bored with food options from here! I tried the winter salmon salad which was very good and huge!! The portions are insane which make for a good 2/3 meals, I ended up sautéing the rest of my kale at home :) I've also tried the Mac and cheese here before in the past and it is very good! Highly recommend for a city lunch date :)
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in after work. tiny side of carrots and can soda 10.00. Carrots dry and ice cold. not coming back. ridiculous price for bad food
google avatar

Jim J.

Yelp
Extremely rude staff lar the cash register. The salad employee told me adding tofu was $2.75. The cashier rang it up as chicken for $3.25. I pointed out the discrepancy and she said "this is the price" and "the employee must have been wrong". Zero customer service. I guess they earn money by tricking customers to paying higher prices for mediocre food. Do not go here.

Sandra M L.

Yelp
Another issue with Fresh and Co. Was charged twice on the app on 2/16/24? I contacted them through the app.
google avatar

Jailine D.

Yelp
The man with the mustache was absolutely so welcoming and kind. He was incredibly respectful and made sure the process was quick and clean. On such a hot day his lovely attitude was refreshing. Will definitely be coming back again!

Yelp
The food was really good! I especially loved the cauliflower mashed. However it was my first time here and I found this place on yelp. Was excited to try it and also tried to use the "free water bottle" coupon on this yelp page and they denied it saying they've never seen it before... I just wish they could've been more accommodating considering it's coming straight from this location's page on yelp.

Yelp
It's not bad but definitely overpriced for the portion and quality. They have a wide range from salads to bowls to sandwiches to hot plates, which is nice. However, any salad with protein will be $12+ after tax , sandwiches are $10+, and entrees with 2 sides and brown rice or quinoa are $14+. The nice part is that everything here is simple, clean, and healthy - so it may be worth the price in favor of eating healthy? The UES Whole Foods is literally a few blocks down and has similar options but at a lower price (less than $14 for sure!). My vegetable medley with quinoa, Brussels sprouts, mac and cheese, and roasted cauliflower was okay but the portion was tiny for almost $11. The food itself was decent - the mac and cheese was creamy, the sprouts were nicely seasoned, and the cauliflower crisp. Overall, not a bad lunch option if you are okay with paying a premium.

Yelp
Another chain salad place. They also have breakfast and are open early. They can't tell you ingredients so I'm always playing Russian Roulette with my allergies. The breakfast bagels, muffins and coffee are reasonable prices. I find that when ordering a salad it gets too pricey. Why not just buy the stuff and make it myself? It's ok for quick bite. You have to wonder why it's so busy when there are fresh baked bagels and pastries only a block away!! Maybe because it's not so busy that it's hard to find a seat! No lines at check out either. Hey, maybe they're not as busy as I thought!

Yelp
After walking by this location a few times, I finally had a chance to try out their food. First off, the whole space is very clean. All the counter spaces are wiped down, everything is neat and organized, and best of all- everything is very fresh! I was trying to figure out which salad to get and Jiray was on the job right away, answering all of my questions and helping me pick something that I would love. She was extremely kind and patient, so shoutout to her for being so awesome! I ended up with the falafel salad with the lemon tahini and avocado chimichurri dressing which was AMAZING! The toppings were super fresh and delicious. I took a star off because I think that the portion size was a bit small for the cost, but otherwise everything was great. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Stefan B.

Yelp
Ehhhhhhh. It's ok. Nothing special, price is ok, but they give less n less food each week.

Sydney D.

Yelp
I ordered an açaí bowl for $13 that was smaller than my hand. They mixed some açaí purée and ice and called it an açaí bowl. I took one bite and had to throw it out. It was awful. Their other food looked pretty good but wouldn't recommend the açaí bow
google avatar

Ana. L.

Yelp
Great place to eat on a lunch break or after work, they have great sandwiches hot or cold and awesome soup, you get your food in minutes service is ok just wish they was more focus when I add on to my order. I hate feeling like I'm talking to myuself. I mainly enjoy their chicken fresco, i never get tired of eating it. Omg delish!!!!!! Love the location, is near everything. I would recommend if your near a fresh&co to try it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and friendly staff! I always go here on my Lunch break. They know me by now and always greet me with smiles! Highly recommend if you're in the area
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
I have ordered the falafel salad and like the fact it is baked not fried. The lemon tahini is tasty. The staff was friendly each time I went. I will try other menu options when I return
google avatar

Mandy L.

Yelp
Caught my eye while I was walking down Lexington Pros: - Interior was simple and clean - great set of tables in the back to do some work - Conveniently located near the 86th train stop - Got the falafel salad and it was extremely fresh and yummy - the herb lemon dressing was delicious! Cons: - Line - they only have two people behind the salad bar so it takes some time if there is a long line

Yelp
Not sure why this place doesn't get more yelp love, so far, my food experience has been pleasant. I usually come here late nights after a long day of work around 7:30-8pm right before closes, so you just know all of the food has been sitting around all day since open. I absolutely loathe going to those "price per pound" open salad and hot bars around that time, since immediately after you pay full price for that old food, it goes right into the garbage; you basically paid for garbage. That's definitely not the case here. It's actually pretty darn good even after sitting around all day, which makes me believe that their ingredients start off really good. This is a company that claims they're all about local, sustainable, organic, and seasonal ingredients, and quite honestly, that quality it is expressed through the food. Everything tastes wonderful, from their chef inspired salads, quinoa bowls, hot paninis, soups, and sandwiches. Although, you need to depend on the counter line cooks in making the food correctly. Often, they are double checking what goes in the creation, missing some things, adding different things, so there are certainly some inconsistencies here. You would think that the staff would be better trained for the price you pay for the food. Overall, it's a great place if you are looking for a fresh, guilt-free, healthier alternative in a clean establishment with attentive staff.

Yelp
Did not even realize this location was up in my hood on the UES a block away from the 86th street subway stop. Dropped in the other day to grab a quick lunch. Always nice to have another healthier meal option in the area. Not a bad spot, bright, clean, organized, with a seating area in the back. It's one of their smaller locations. Still, these places seem like a Pret A Manger knockoff. Same style of sandwiches and lunch products. But way pricey. Only difference is they make salads and have more soups available. It's a good choice for healthier food options if watching the diet. The turkey sandwich and pea soup I had were pretty good. The shop itself is bright, clean, organized, with a little seating. It's one of their smaller locations. As others have noted the staff working here is very friendly and helpful.

Unknown U.

Yelp
I have come to this location a couple of times and the only good reasonable thing is a sandwich. I ordered a salad once and i paid almost $20! It's overpriced. I have also ordered an açaí BOWL....which came in a small cup. $10 for the açaí "bowl", it was too overpriced for the small amount you get.
google avatar

Joel R.

Yelp
Don't go there you will get sick they don't clean the grill well.I had eggs the other day that got me very sick .They are very unsanitary area .I don't understand why they have A rating.SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN !!!!

Yelp
This Fresh&Co location is conveniently located a few blocks away from the Met and is right by the entrance to the 4/5/6. This makes it a great place to grab lunch before heading to the Met. Like other Fresh and Co locations, they have premade sandwiches that can be heated or made to order salads. All of the salads can be customized. You can choose from one of the menu options (and add or subtract ingredients) or make your own from scratch. I have enjoyed all of the menu combinations I've tried. On my last visit, I opted for a salad and ordered the Mexican Caesar. It was delicious! The sweet pickled peppers add a great flavor.
google avatar

Fabiola P.

Yelp
So this was my first time here at this location. I was staying at the double tree and was so excited to see Fresh & Co right next door. I must say they definitely live up to their name, Fresh. Everything from the prepackaged sandwiched, the apples and muffins near the register and the salad toppings in the back ALL looked so good and "fresh". This restaurant is pleasantly clean and have outdoor seating. I ordered the Tex Mex bowl that comes with avocado, cheese, pico de gallo, kale, quinoa, black beans and a spicy sauce. It was so good good! They mix the ingredients together in a small sauce pan for a few minutes (minus the avo and quinoa). While that's warming up they scoop some quinoa in a bowl then top the remaining ingredients on top. It was so good! Next time I'm in the city I will definitely be back.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
Their slogan is "just made. just for you." Apparently this only applies to salads. The paninis are all pre-made in a glass case. If you have a food allergy or just an ingredient preference, you're out of luck. They flat out refused to make a panini "just for [me]." I asked for one of their standard paninis minus one ingredient because of a food allergy (leaving only two other ingredients, mind you, not a super complex special order) and they refused. And my friends and I were the only ones in there. It wasn't busy. I wasn't holding up the line. The irony of Fresh&Co refusing to make a sandwich fresh is hard to miss. "just made. just for you." should read "made sometime this morning. you don't get a say in what's in it."
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Ordered in advance. Got here and they hadn't even started my order. 15 minutes later and a line starting to grow, the one girl decides to start reading up on how to make a smoothie. 20 mins for a smoothie I ordered 15 minutes before I set foot in the store. 35 minutes for a smoothie with no ice in it.
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped here for a quick bite while exploring NYC and I get New York comes with high prices but I got an acai bowl that was overpriced and underwhelming. I'm only giving it two stars because they used real fruit for the most part. This was also a frustrating trip because I asked the guy who was making the bowl to not add agave syrup. Then when I saw him put it in I reminded him I didn't want agave and the man got confused because he thought I said I didn't want acai in the acai bowl. Then got even more confused when I said it was fine I'd take the bowl but I did actually want the acai part added to my acai bowl. But hey, I got a free water for checking in on yelp!

Yelp
Wow that was enjoyable. On my way to Fairway to grab a ready made salad there was a young lady (probably the same age, who knows) handing out flyers for the newly opened Fresh & Co. With the flyer you get a Spindrift beverage with a market fresh plate, salad, or quinoa bowl purchase. Sweet something different for lunch! Popped in to the new location where dirty ol' Chirping Chicken used to be. Nicely renovated ready for business. Jumped right in and ordered a chipotle lime chicken over a bed of quinoa (you get two sides with it) ordered collard greens with turkey bacon and carrots, and for the finale ordered beans with corn. The chicken (natural, hormone and antibiotic free) was tasty and tender with a great flavor. (Prep guy squeezed some lime juice on it for a nice touch). Collards were so yummy. Quinoa was good (not much thought about it, but good). Black, kidney and corn mix was spicy but delightful. For the beverage they had a non sweetened bubbly lemon drink. Nice! They also have a self serve fountain with iced teas, and they make fresh juices. Great healthy options for the neighborhood and for lunch, dinner and even breakfast. They have omelettes until 10:30am. I wanna try those out. Dishes are customizable in terms of sides. Sandwiches and salads come either premade or on the salads you can create your own. On my way out I discovered a nutritional guide with the breakdown of their dishes. Very useful! Overall a great experience and I will be back.

Yelp
Wow! Not a bad experience. Some of my pals recommended this place to go to for lunch so I gave it a shot. Came here for the first time and can't complain. Food was pretty good and warm. Portions were fair and wasn't too expensive. Staff is also very, very nice. Almost every one of them greeted me and smiled. I realized they have the level up feature as well do you can pay with your phone and earn rewards just like Hale & Heartys. This saves a lot of time and is very convenient. There are salads and platters as well as sandwiches. Plenty of drinks. Teas and organic drinks. Place is very clean too since they opened not too long away. Only problem is the seating. It is a bit tight and crammed. Tables are decorated with real herbs like silver thyme and basil.(not sure if it's there to eat). I would recommend this place and sure will come back to try the other stuff!

Yelp
After a bad experience last year at the 35 street location I swore I would never step foot in to a fresh and co. I decided to give this location a try, and I'm glad I did. The customer service was excellent, the manger Luis was very nice. I told him about my last experience and he apologized. Even tho it wasn't his fault, everyone who worked here was very speedy and accurate with my order. I didn't receive any attitude, even though they already packed some stuff being they where about to close. The girl preparing my salad kindly offered to get me what I wanted in my salad. Besides the 7th Ave location this will be my new favorite spot. And because of this location I will be a returning customer. Thank you !! (FYI: Salad was fresh and amazing as I always remembered)

Yelp
Trayvon is the absolute BEST! Such wonderful customer service, so kind, and always has a smile on his face. He also makes the most delicious salads! Yum!

Yelp
I am one of the pickest eaters, and rarely do I like vegetables. But this food is amazing! They were fast, I ordered the Lemen Herb Chicken, agave sweet potatoes, maple glazed brussel sprouts, and brown rice. It was all just an explosion of flavor. The clam chowder was the best I have had in a long time, so full of flavor. I loved that I was able to see and pick out what I wanted to put on my plate! Not a long wait, you can take it to go, or there is limited seating
google avatar

Yelp
Visited on 5/25/17 First, let me say that I am absolutely disappointed that I want to give them ZERO stars because the manager and staff were absolutely lovely. I bought a custom salad and a double ginger lemonade, which was AMAZING! The reason I am giving it a zero is because about 2 hours after I ate and drank everything, my stomach got really bubbly and I ended up vomiting everything. Now, these were the only things I consumed for the entire day. Again, very disappointed that even happened but I guess that makes it obvious that SOMETHING wasn't as fresh as they claim.
google avatar

Seth Z.

Yelp
Great fresh lunch choice. Lots of veggies! Steve (I think he is the manager) has helped me twice. He is friendly and always smiling. Turquoise (she was near the salads) was awesome! She wished me a wonderful hump day. She also made a great recommendation when I asked. She said "I have not eaten much veggies until I worked here". She had me try the maple brussel sprouts. They were great! A plus. Go Steve and turquoise.

Yelp
My bestie and I were pretty famished since we walked about 20 blocks in the snow. Fresh, organic and local caught my eye as we walked by. So we decided to grab a quick dinner and I'm glad we did. I ordered a mesculan salad with lime chicken, roasted red peppers, carrots and broccoli. For dressing to give it a light kick was an herb lime. Let's just say the salad was delicious, colorful, fresh and light. I was relatively pleased. The employees are polite and sweet. The establishment was clean and had salt and pepper on the tables. You do get a free piece of bread to go with your salad. Unfortunately, it's about two days old and hard as a rock. You can use it almost as a teething toy for a baby. Lol I will be back:)
