The Best Restaurants in West Seattle | Eater Seattle

"The dream of the ‘90s is alive at Freshy’s. Part coffee shop, part bar, part unexpectedly excellent soup restaurant, this hole-in-the-wall is as cozy and welcoming as your hippest aunt’s living room. The last time we were here, there were two guys at the bar discussing werewolves and vampires in very serious tones. Come in, tune out, log off, and try the soup." - Laura LeMoon

Google
Eclectic coffee shop in West Seattle, a cozy haven for solo coffee breaks. Their soup selection was delightful. Unfortunately, their espresso machine was broken, but they accommodated my request as much as possible. The coziness of the place made it a delightful experience.

Oh. My. God. When my friend said that she loved the soups there I was thinking how good could they be? But holy cow they are amazing. Original distinct flavors and prices that won’t break the wallet. I’m putting them on my permanent rotation.

Known for soups! Friendly coffee shop with great coffee, tea, sandwiches, pastries chips, cookies and Miss Pac-Man! Cool local art, great vibes, friendly patrons, dog friendly. Ample comfortable seating and tables with options for bar seating, booths, and outdoor tables with chairs and benches. Plenty of parallel street parking and close to the bus stop. What’s not to love?

Google
A cool little "dive" coffee shop. Has a little Pac man old school arcade game! Plenty of space and tables and chairs. I didn't want to take too many pictures of the seating as not to be creepy but there's also outside picnic tables! They have non dairy options which is a bonus. A little pricy but that's everywhere in Seattle. We highly recommend.

Google
Well, fresh is right! This place. Their breakfast sandwich #1 is quite literally the best breakfast sandwich I have ever tasted...and I have had a metric ton of breakfast sandwiches. This rad eclectic community space reminds me of the punk coffee shops in Olympia and Tacoma that I love. A solid dark cup of coffee, loose local tea, and mind-blowing home cooked food including original house-made soups, and hot pressed sandwiches - the very smell of which was enough to make me hungry. They also boast a range of healthy/delicious cold beverages, wifi, arcade, couches by the fireplace, house plants, plenty of power outlets, and Seattle Gay News on tap. Today francophone new wave punk is the auditory flavor, delighting my ears and threatening to rival the savory smells that tempt my nose in this fabulous joint. I'll definitely be back, I have found a new neighborhood favorite.

This is my mammas go to spot for coffee and to hangout. Extremely friendly and personable staff. Cozy environment to snuggle up with a book or meet with friends. Good coffee and soup!

Google
Cozy little coffee shop with food and desserts! Comfy old furniture with a fireplace and outdoor seating in nice weather. They also allow dogs! ❤️

I met friends for coffee, no food. Others food looked good. Service great! So kind and welcoming and one young lady carried my coffee to the table. So kind.

Yelp
We hosted a baby shower here...yup, that's right, a baby shower! While the space is not that large, it was perfect for our group of 20. They reserved the right side of the space for us, which includes, some couches, high tops, small tables, and a booth. We had people just order what they wanted and it was billed to us at the end. I loved that you could just grab your own canned drink from the cold case. They had both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. It is a cafe so you could of course order coffee and tea up front. They also had some pastries behind the glass. The food portion of their menu was soups and sandwiches and everyone seemed to enjoy everything. They were very accommodating and the fireplace was a nice feature.

Yelp
I popped in here for coffee because I had just left the running store nearby, saw that they serve Victorla Coffee, and love trying new coffee shops. The staff were quite personable and the space seemed pretty chill. I can't speak for their fresh baked goods or sandwiches, but the coffee was top notch. Will gladly go back to try any of their food items.

Yelp
Always friendly service even when there's only one person on a busy Saturday morning. Very patient with little kids, high school kids, pets and strollers. Their soups are tasty and their sandwiches crispy. The coffee shop vibes are excellent and everyone seems cheered to be there. They do get the HS kids at lunch time so it gets busy then. The only star I take away is their latte is always lukewarm or never hot. I've tried asking for extra-hot but it's never hot - they don't use a thermometer and I'm not a stickler for super hot coffee - I just like to not drink it in one go. Once in a while a barista will make it hot when you say xtra hot. Maybe it's only the milk drinks - maybe the americanos are hot.

Yelp
I hate writing negative reviews, especially for small businesses but this morning's experience was really bad. I came in about 7:30-8am, and I'm not naturally a morning person so I get not being 100% chipper and full of sunshine. However this barista didn't really even great me, seemed annoyed I even came in even though there was only one other customer in, they made me a terrible coffee and didn't say thank you or good bye. again, I don't expect a lot early in the morning but give me a little bit of basic customer service! I ordered a large americano with cream and sugar. Tasted like there was hardly in coffee in it and the shots were not well pulled to begin with. I love this shop and this business generally. They have great food! But this morning was one of the worst coffee experiences I've had in years honestly.

Yelp
I really liked coming here pre-pandemic bc the sandwiches and soups were tasty and it's local for me. Unfortunately many of the workers here are not following the mask mandate. This past summer the owner was preparing drinks with just a clear mouth shield (note, not a face shield) that barely covered her mouth. My husband and I then went in for coffee this past week (during peak omicron surge) and the gentleman behind the counter was completely maskless- a mask was nowhere near him and the door was shut preventing any air circulation. There was also a patron he was chatting with before we came in that was completely maskless. After these two experiences we are choosing not to return to this business and have instead walked the extra 3 blocks north to West Seattle Grounds.

Yelp
Great food! What a nice place to have in WS! Staff is always so friendly and the the restaurant is very clean. New family favorite!

David S.

Yelp
I've had better coffee at Starbucks. I expected so much more. 3 people working I was 2nd in line and it still took them 15 minutes to make a "mexican mocha" which was Kayane w/ Cinnamon... come on. The place was dank humid old couches w/ who knows what on the cloth material.
google avatar

Akshat D.

Yelp
Really chill vibe coffee shop with places to sit both indoors and out. Good selection of breakfast sandwiches and the coffee is good. Would def come back to get some work done, it was quite with some music playing which you could hear but not enough to lose focus! Staff is nice and friendly. Would def recommend a place you can grab a good cup of coffee and get some work done.

Yelp
My marker for quality coffee is the Italiano. Real simple. If your doppio espresso with a splash of hot water hits, you are a good coffee shop, if not, what are we doing here? Freshy's hits!!! Highly recommended. Great coffee made by people invested in improving this community. Thanks!!!

Linda P.

Yelp
Looked like an interesting place for lunch, really more like a coffee joint that served some food. I had soup (I think it was Hungarian mushroom) which was severely over seasoned, and a grilled cheese which had what appeared to be one very thin slice of cheese, just enough to hold two slices of bread together. Cannot recommend.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
So, I've managed to drive past this place thousands of times, no exaggeration, and never stop in. Today, in need of lunch, I broke the habit. It's very funky. A hodgepodge of consignment-store furniture, old-school video games, a profusion of globes, gas fireplace, exposed brick, black dropped ceiling, cement floors, local art. Fun! I ordered a salami sandwich and oxtail soup, and was dismayed to see the counter staff pull a plastic container of soup from the fridge, reconstitute it in a glass measure with water, and slap it in the microwave. Ironic, in a place called, "Freshy's", don't you think? One star: gone. Look, get a small steam table with a soup insert. You can pick one up for a song at any of the used kitchen equipment stores in town. You'll have hot soup on demand for your customers, with a little preparation, which will speed up service AND give the impression you care about your food, which microwaving does NOT provide. Message me if if want help setting this up. The soup was ok, a beef/barley affair with strong black pepper flavor, parsnip, onion or leek, and mushroom in evidence. Very seasonal and warming. The microwave made the barley more chewy of course, and it was served nearly boiling, a danger with microwave use. The sandwich was tasty and well-made, all ingredients evenly represented and on an excellent-quality bread. Service was good and friendly, but the counter and open kitchen area needed organization and cleaning, as did the outside of the store, which was piled with dead and trodden leaves that customers were obliged to track into the store. That's the second missing star. Neat place, but it could use a sprucing and a different approach to their soup program, so that they might live up to their name. A typical response to advice like mine would be, "Why bother? Nobody cares!" I would counter that food lovers DO care, enough in fact to give you advice like this, and when it comes to healthfully and carefully prepared food, it COULD be the only one not caring is...you. Recommended, with obvious concerns. They do make a decent sandwich.

Yelp
Long wait and blatant health code violations.. While waiting to be helped a dog peed on the side of the counter and the girl cleaned it up (no gloves) and without washing hands proceeds to make coffees and handle food (still bare hands) for customers.. pretty concerning. No mask on her either. While I was waiting some girls came up asking about their forgotten food. this place also got shut down last week for serving minors. Small cute local place but they need to step it up
google avatar

Erica B.

Yelp
Ewww...the staff weren't wearing masks when I was there last weekend. It made me wonder what other health laws they're violating. I'm not going back.

Anna K.

Yelp
This is one of the last remaining old-school coffee shops left in Seattle! It feels like the 90s and give you a nice sense of nostalgia, lack of corporate feel and friendly and supportive service. I love the atmosphere. It's a local treasure! Bonus: their soup is amazing! I love Freshy's!!
google avatar

K P.

Yelp
Best spot in West Seattle!! I LOVE Freshy's. Have been coming here for coffee with friends for almost 15 years. Best soup, sandwiches and coffee & mimosas!! What makes the place though is the staff. They are down to earth, wonderful people.

R L.

Yelp
Wonderful people, fantastic food and coffee! It's always such a treat to step into a small business that makes you feel as though you just entered the home of someone welcoming you into their own personal home with their wonderful home made goodies and hospitality. These are top notch people who care about their community and the love for what they do shows in every bite and sip.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere, great staff and ownership. Fine coffee. Highly recommend this local establishment.

Yelp
Great, relaxing, and quiet spot for a low-key sammie on California Ave. Breakfast sandwiches all day and several other sandwiches. I had ham and cheddar with horseradish sauce. Pretty tasty with grilled sourdough. They have a variety of pastries and other bakery items along with a daily soup rotation. Plenty of drink variety including espresso based and beers.
google avatar

Chris N.

Yelp
Love this place! Friendly staff, great coffee... ! Highly recommend! Appreciate that everyone is greeted when they come in... The breakfast sandwiches are the best in the city...

Yelp
Called in an order for two sands and a soup, told it would be ready in fifteen. Get there a couple minutes earlier to order some coffees with, and was told the sands were on the grill. Few minutes go by, and the guy who took my order is just ducking around on a laptop instead of helping the young woman making food and working coffee bar, which I know from years of experience to be a pain in the ass. I wait a little longer and the young woman realizes the grill press isn't even plugged in, after that a customer comes up and asks about a sandwich they had waited half an hour for. He gets a refund and leaves. After he walks out the staff complain loudly about how this happens all the time and how funny it is. I should have taken his cue and just gotten my money back there. It's easily twenty minutes I'm standing around this dirty ass cafe waiting for the tiniest sandwiches that are finally ready. I walk out to my car and realize they didn't give me the soup so I head back in. The guy who took my order and has been talking to who I'm assuming to be a regular about how much traffic his website is getting, gets up in a huff and pulls out a vat of cold coagulated soup concentrate, slaps some in a coffee cup, ands some hot water and starts stirring. At that point I told him to keep it, and warned two men coming in to avoid the place. Smelled like dog piss, customers dirty dishes commingling with in-use cookware on the counter, sub par coffee with no prices on the menu, rude & inattentive barista/ servers. I used to crush lines out the door making very hands on coffee for years and this was just honestly shocking. I will attempt to follow up with owner / mgmt. sandwich was decent. Lol

Yelp
Freshy's and Spud Fish & Chips are my go-to's when I am in West Seattle. Enjoyed my visit last week and will be back for their breakfast sandwiches.

Stephen M.

Yelp
Friendly staff and really excellent little coffee shop! They have delicious drinks and a nice selection of teas
google avatar

Morgan D.

Yelp
Very cool coffee shop with great sandwiches. I come here for lunch. The Barista are the best.
google avatar

Ginger S.

Yelp
This is the best sandwich place in Seattle, hands down. Today I got the tuna melt and it's typically really good. Somehow they outdid the recipe enough to make me want to come here and leave a review. So seriously delicious.
google avatar

Tom D.

Yelp
I've been to this location quite a few times because they are super friendly and have incredible tasting food. I love the comfy and quirky decor of the business. Perfect place to spend a Sunday morning with a book and tasty treats.
google avatar

Rod V.

Yelp
Decided to try something different in Admiral, since we were going to get groceries from Safeway afterwards. This place has such a cool, indie, local vibe. Cozy couches, proper chairs and tables, and the requisite counter seating. Good selection of various breakfast sandwiches, modest selection of baked goods, and the usual suspects on their drink menu. I had a delicious veggie breakfast sandwich (tomatoes, cheddar, spinach) and hubs had an equally delish version that had ham too. For those two sandwiches, a medium latte, and a large hot chocolate, we landed close to $30, so it wasn't the cheapest, but between the yummy food and the friendly service, we'll definitely be back. Ample street parking along California St.

Kate J.

Yelp
Really bad service. After my last experience I don't feel comfortable going back because the barista was so rude.

Clare C.

Yelp
Disgusting place. No masks anywhere including the food handlers. Used to go there before the lockdown never again. If they don't have respect for preparing food during Covid, under mandate, what kind of care will they take at other times with other sicknesses? There's no excuse. WEAR A MASK!
google avatar

Cesca B.

Yelp
Service: super friendly barista. Ambiance: it's small and a little dark but the vibe of the place makes up for it. It feels comfortable and there are couches and seats with tables available. Not sure if they had outlets. The music was more lo fi pop. Seems like a great spot for a rainy evening. Overall: this cafe stays open late til 9pm which is a great option since most cafes close early. I'd def go back. It just feels like a low key neighbourhood spot.

Carlin S.

Yelp
Great environment, great service, great coffee, great values. Reminds me of old Seattle.

Chad K.

Yelp
The woman behind the counter, who was preparing food couldn't be bothered to wear a mask. If my family's safety, including my kids who are too young to be vaccinated or masked, isn't worth a mask, then your business isn't worth my money.

Greg S.

Yelp
Cozy and laid back, slightly crusty in an old seattle way. Great coffee and friendly service. Haven't tried the food yet but will be going back to try.
google avatar

Lee A.

Yelp
We were looking for a quiet and comfortable place to get some work done. This was a great place for that. The staff is friendly and there are several kinda of seating options. Booth, tables, couches, a bar/counter. They have a great healthy food and drink menu with food all made and prepared in house. There is plenty of free parking along the street outside. You should have no problem finding a spot. They have free WiFi. Only negative thing was some of the music. It was a little too loud and some of it was a little annoying. I would definitely come back and I really want to try their homemade clam chowder.

Kyle B.

Yelp
It's hard to be Freshy's for a good drink and tasty treat. They are the best. I can always expect great service at Freahy's.
google avatar

Jane K.

Yelp
An eclectic little cafe that makes me feel like I'm a college student (shiver). Chill vibes and music. Basic sandwiches. Not so basic soups. Both good. PROS: - Food yums the soul, but it's not "soul food" - Weekday dinner time is quiet - Homemade soups are unique and healthy - Free parking & WiFi CONS: - Salty AF sandwich, dare I say saltiest I've ever had?! My ham & horseradish one had visible excessive salt on the outside of the bread and even more generous spicy spread that became inedible halfway through...but the toasty bread and gooey cheese was delish) - Only one girl on staff albeit a slow night; a nice gal BUT she made out with her boyfriend(?) very briefly when he paid her a visit, right in the doorway of the dining room 1 sandwich and 2 cups of soup du jour was $18. Not too bad considering scratch soup and local bread. I'd come again, but must tell them to lay off the salt. Please, I don't want hypertension and even more dehydration.

Nora B.

Yelp
Had an appointment in West Seattle, randomly came across Freshy's. Had a delicious warm breakfast sandwich as well as their amazing cheddar soup!! It was indeed a treat! Plus had a lovely chat with Amber, the owner! Love supporting small, local business, especially when so tasty!!

Brian J.

Yelp
Very welcoming place, respectful of all customers! Nice to see local business owners with principles to take a stand for what is the right thing to do.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
We came here to work and found a table right away although it was quite busy this afternoon. The iced coffees came quickly yet felt crafted just for us in their cute tall glasses. The table we sat at we're big enough for two 15" laptops, two iced coffees and two glasses of water. There were plenty of electrical outlets along the wall and the fire made it feel very cozy while we slaved away job hunting. Would definitely return to this great little cafe and eatery to try the pastries and foods provided.

Yelp
Stopped in to Freshy's today to grab a coffee. I've driven by for years and never had the occasion to stop in for a coffee. Today was my day! It's Sunday so I figured it would be a ghost town. As I walked in I noticed they have some soft cushy seats around, but there plenty of people around. I walked up to the counter to figure out what to get, "what to get". I waited for a bit, nothing. I couldn't figure out who was working there? My lost look must've grabbed the attention of one of the patrons who literally said "Dude, the person that works here is out for a smoke right now." Not they've stepped away, not that they had to run to the lavatory. I walked back out coffee-less. Oh, well, one terrible experience is not the end of the world, but it does make for a poor review.

Lindsay B.

Yelp
Great coffee shop! I didn't have their coffee, but I got a cheddar scone and it was delicious and relatively cheap. They have outlets at every table which is good for working. Their Wi-Fi worked well, and it was a nice ambience. They aren't super strict about how long you stay so I was here for several hours doing schoolwork.
google avatar

Karie S.

Yelp
Do not get their drip coffee! It tasted like stale bitter instant coffee that left a sandy taste in your mouth. It was murky too so I'm pretty sure it was powdered coffee? Besides that they had a nice style and good music. Just did not enjoy the drip coffee!
google avatar

Jo D.

Yelp
Freshy's was my 1st love coffee shop when I moved to Seattle from New York over a year ago. It was 2 blocks from my apartment and the perfect treat on days I had to ride the bus into work. The quirky ambiance gives it a homey feel making it easy to spend a few hours here mooching off the WiFi and getting some work done. They make a great oat milk Mexican mocha! (I don't know if I've ever ordered anything here BUT that!) I've tried other great coffee spots in West Seattle but I still make a point to stop in here every now and then

Emma B.

Yelp
Really unkind staff. I was not surprised to see all the other one star reviews. As someone who also works in food service, I know it's not an easy job interacting with customers, but my god. Freshy's is really open about their dislike for proper customer service. Also, their whole anti-mask situation is ridiculous and immature. Sad to see a local business not care about the health and safety of their community.
google avatar

Catherine R.

Yelp
To start the staff is super friendly and nice. I've had their ham, cheddar, and horse radish sandwich which is pretty delicious. I also ventured to try some of their freshly made daily soup (Spicy pozole) to take home and eat later. I was definitely not disappointed! It was super flavorful and had the perfect amount of spice! I very much recommend this place.
google avatar

Oliver G.

Yelp
This is probably a place you'll go to only if you work nearby. However, if you do, try the soup. They typically have a veg and non-veg option. Both are homemade. All are creative. I'm not typically a soup person. I usually think I need more food than a soup at lunch. These soups are hearty and delicious.

J B.

Yelp
After hair garnish in my sandwich one time, a wrong order another time, grainy coffee another time, and a general lack of professionalism and hygiene from the serving staff, I've come to the conclusion that Freshy's is not so fresh. Disappointing as this is a convenient and rare gluten-free option near my house. Also disappointing because it would be so easy for a shop to do better.
google avatar

Herman T.

Yelp
This place kinda reminds me of Central Perk from Friends. Same seating arrangement, fluffy couches, substantial mugs, and brick facing. It's kinda indecisive on its decor and theme though as it's kinda arcade/game roomish or a throwback to old 90s Seattle. There is a fantastic fireplace on the far side of the place. My wife and I came through this place on a cold day and that fireplace was clutch as hell. I loved it. I don't really remember the baristas name but she was an extremely nice and professional little blonde woman. She made our coffee and breakfast sandwiches. I ordered a turkey and cheese with an added egg. The wife ordered a ham and cheese. In short I liked the soy vanilla latte and I really enjoyed the sandwich. The sandwich had really sexy grill lines and was finished with a little sea salt on top. Very nice touch. The wife's ham and cheese was tasty as well from what she told me. We stayed there quite a long while and we didn't run across any annoying clientele or unruly kids which was another plus. Upon our exit we were both thirsty and we took advantage of their wonderful selection of sugary drinks. Things did get a little pricey but all in all a pretty damn good experience. We didn't have to circle a thousand times to park. Things were quiet and pleasant. No complaints from me. Hi

Alex V.

Yelp
Spent the day cruising California street and came across this gem of a cafe. Cozy and inviting and they whip up delicious drip. I'd make this my regular cafe if I lived in the hood. Great spot for posting up for a relaxing sip of Joe or working on business deals, studying up on exams or people watchin'. Staff is super nice too since they pointed us in the right direction for window shopping.

Poliana S.

Yelp
I want to be polite and I don't want to put anyone in trouble or get fired but I really want to see this place improve in the employees! On my first visit I noticed that she was making my sandwich without gloves, wearing gloves is not just a matter of being in the middle of a pandemic, it's hygiene! When I asked her to please put on the glove and make me another sandwich she was angry and arrogant, it was clear that she didn't like it and she said "I wash my hands". Like girl??? Her friend also said "everything here is clean and sanitized", ok but, where is her gloves? Since when this is normal? Gloves is not just a matter of COVID, but HYGIENE! The food and drink in this place is excellent but clearly they have no hygiene. She finished my sandwich and she was clearly mad and uncomfortable, she badly wrapped it and gave to me, all this because I asked her politely to put on a glove. Thank you for the good food but I'm never coming back just because of your employees! I will be sure to tell everyone and in my social media to not go to this place. TAKE COVID SERIOUS!
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Probably my most favorite sandwich shop in all of Seattle. And my first stop every time I am here! Try the soup! Coffee is delish! and the salt on the bread is the key ingredient
