Freya Bakery adjacent to Pike Place makes tasty croissants - Review - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Freya is a cute little bakery adjacent to Pike Place that makes a wide assortment of pastries and coffee drinks—but we're mainly excited about their croissants. We would gladly curl up in those toasty, thin layers and take a nap. While the plain version could use just a touch more sugar to bring out more character of the dough, Freya has plenty of other interesting options, too, including a creamy spanakopita version that would be a hit at an afternoon picnic." - Gabe Guarente

Famous Seattle Restaurants That Live Up to the Hype | Eater Seattle

"Named after the Norse goddess of love (who rides a chariot pulled by two cats!), this bistro inside Ballard’s National Nordic Museum is getting nationwide press for its modern take on Nordic cuisine. The streamlined, light-flooded dining room is veldig skandinavisk, and dishes like the juniper-smoked salmon smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich) and aquavit cocktails go the extra mile to drive the point home." - Meg van Huygen

In Seattle visiting and this was the most delicious bakery and cafe. The staff was so nice and service was excellent. We asked about the name Freya and got the most passionate origin story. We ordered the quiche, tomato ricotta croissant, Norwegian brunch, and pear brûlée. Their coffee was also so good (they roast their own beans). We could eat here every day - and we did!

Kinda of a hidden gem below the tourist traps of Pike Place Market (take the stairs down to Western and its steps away). Great seating and fantastic selection of bakery items, including single serving cake. The Matcha Dome itself is worth the visit. I had a the Gluten Free Cherry Orange (coffee) bread - not sweat and perfectly flavored. They also have Macadamia nut for milk alternative.

Just below Pike Place Market is a small Scandinavian bakery. Walk inside you find many pasties, breakfast items, and coffee. Overall, we enjoyed our breakfast experience. My eight-year-old daughter loved the banana chocolate chip bread. My wife and I enjoyed the meat quiche and breakfast bun with bacon. The cardamom knot had good flavor but it was cold and hard. To drink, we both got the Kobenhaven Latte. It’s a slightly sweet latte with almond, cardamom and other flavors. The space is small but there are a few outdoor tables along the sidewalk. Inside is a water jug with plastic cups and dog treats. Service was

We went here on a Sunday morning around 11 am and there a small line, took us about 5-10 mins. While in the line, you can see the variety of foods offered here with their names clearly labeled. But there are no prices listed anywhere, and things are on the expensive side. The service at the register is a bit messy. They call the next person to the register, but walk away from it to get the previous customer’s order. They also shuffled registers so wasn’t sure if both were open and where to stand. The food itself was good. The coffee was decent as well; no complaints. The ambiance is nice, and plenty of tables were available, although the place gets a bit noisy.

Google
This cozy pier-side café was absolutely worth it! Though their espresso was a bit sour, they’re definitely known for their baked goodies, which were absolutely phenomenal and lived up to all the hype! We got the Churro Cruffin, which was perfectly sweet while tasting faintly of cinnamon, feeling both flaky and soft from its croissant-esque nature, and being perfectly buttery. It also had a rich custard filling! We also got the Dutch Chocolate Cake, which similarly was spectacularly rich (and dense as well)! Even if these delicious goods do run on the pricier side, what a beautiful café by the shore!

Google
Freya is by far the BEST place for coffee and freshly baked treats! Everything is made fresh daily!!! My gf and I were so amazed how fantastic the food and coffee was, we both decided to make this place a must go every time we visit Seattle! Can’t wait to get back and try all the other sweet and savory treats! Sincerely, Derek & Jess Customers for life!

Small place, service was fast and the staff was friendly. Loved the avocado toast and mokkadom. Raspberry bloom late was excellent!

WOW! Utterly delicious and the best baked goods I've had in a while. The tomato pesto Danish stole the show. Such a fantastic treat!

Yelp
Lovely little bakery with both indoor and outdoor seating. Staff members were very welcoming and helpful. We shared a slice of orange almond cake that was delicious. Kobenhavn latte (cardamom and almond flavored) was delightful. Really amazing looking chocolate chunk or oatmeal raisin cookies were calling my name but I just couldn't do it this time. Croissants also looked splendid as did a few of the savory items. Gonna have to come back.

Yelp
This review is for one item: the kouign-amann. Unfortunately, this was lacking on all fronts. The best part of a kouign-amann is that it should be SUPER buttery and flaky, but their rendition was soggy and instead of distinct layers, you had just a sad doughy center. I will continue my hunt in Seattle for an acceptable version of this pastry as unfortunately I didn't find on here. Logistically, the store is a street away from Pike Place and was completely empty at 1PM on a Sunday. They still had most of their pastries available and there is very little seating at the store (a few tables outside and bench seating indoors). Can't speak for the other food or drinks, but the service was very sweet at least. Perhaps the famed churro cruffin is worth the hype, but as a first visit, I wasn't impressed.

Yelp
Adorable and delicious bakery with the best coffee around. We just discovered this little secret spot today. We will be back in the morning to test out their pastries. And of course to get a coffee flight.

Yelp
This is such a fantastic cafe. Stopped here twice during our weekend trip to Seattle. Their Kobenhaven coffee was amazing (both hot and iced) and a blueberry danish the first time (so delicious, the blueberries were so fresh and the pastries was so crunchy). The second time we stopped in we met Oli our amazing barista! They were so sweet and funny :) definitely made our second stop memorable. I got another 8 oz kobenhaven and a churro cruffin (PLEASE TRY THIS!!!) and a pear crème brûlée to go because all of their pastries were immaculate. The shop is on the smaller side but there is ample seating outside and a few seats inside:) it's also close to pikes so if you're in that neighborhood be sure to stop by!

Yelp
We did....but if you are near the waterfront or PPM, may be worth stopping by Freya to get a coffee and breakfast. Located on the backside of PPM on Western, it's a cozy little cafe. Only a few seats inside and a few tables outside. Friendly greetings as we walked in, a lot of nice looking pastries and some sandwiches to choose from. We got the Market Croissant Sandwich and Pecan Sticky Bun. Both were real good and tasty! Accompany that with a latte and chai, we were good to go! It's order at the counter style and they will call your name as your food and drinks become ready. They may not always remember, but be sure to remind them you ordered a bottled drink too. Staff was nice & friendly, on the pricier side, cozy place, coffee and food was good. Glad to have come by to check them out.

Yelp
Kinda soggy ngl I've had way crunchier kouignfnnamansnn. The cookie was pretty good tho

Yelp
Came to this local bakery in Pike Place Market for breakfast. Freya is unique while also being familiar. It specializes in making Scandinavian baked goods and pastries. Has quite a few things to choose from even though it's limited in area. There's a few things for vegans including lattes and avocado toast among the freshly made offerings. A pretty cozy place to sip on coffee and munch on baked goods. It's modern looking while also having the classic charm of old school coffee hangouts. This is one of those places you order at the counter, and they call it out. Has some things that set it apart from other coffeehouses. The main thing is the Scandinavian influence, with the seasonings and spices. It's about $6 for a latte. The Kobenhaven Latte is made with almond, cardamom, and espresso, with steamed milk. Can get a non dairy milk alternate. It's $12 for Avocado Toast. Has standard toppings on it. The avocado spread is seasoned with garlic, lime, microgreens, and sesame seeds. Has many things that are baked fresh. There's danishes obviously, as well as breads and other pastries. Fresh and clean. It's on Western Avenue at Pike. This is on the first floor of the market, and is open for breakfast and lunch, with a few things for vegans and vegetarians.

Yelp
Freya is one of my favorite cafes and bakeries in Seattle. Nestled between Pike Place and the waterfront, the storefont is small but mighty. They have a great selection of Scandinavian-influenced baked goods and coffees. Simply browsing their pastry case makes me so happy because of how beautiful every pastry looks! With that said, their churro cruffin is out of this world. Dusted with cinnamon sugar and filled with custard inside, the cruffin is flaky, airy, and buttery. The portion was also huge, making it perfect for sharing. Not to exaggerate, but I dream about eating it everyday. I highly recommend everyone to check out Freya.

Yelp
This is the most amazing bakery I have ever been to! My favorite was the churro cruffin, but every single item we tried was amazing. We bought two boxes worth every day while on vacation. The service was fantastic and it was a beautiful spot. It's a hidden gem.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this cute hidden gem , I walked in and loved the esthetic decore. I got greeted by a young gentleman. I wasn't quite sure what to order. but I said what the heck . I'm yelping also. so I ordered the Avocado Toast , Seattle frog and for my dessert Pear creme brulee. my avocado toast has a kick of spice, my Frog actually they recommend it hot but I got it cold, trust even better I think . to stuff to try the creme brulee . No Restrooms, very small to sit inside of you have party of 3 or more. There's sitting outside as well. I recommend what I ordered to be quite honest :)

Yelp
One of the best bakeries in downtown Seattle that has wonderful pastries and tasty food. They have a bit of a twist on the traditional pastries that makes it worth visiting.

Yelp
What a cozy little spot just beneath Pike Place Market. Western Ave is kind of neat in that it's like busy but doesn't "feel busy" if that makes sense. So, since it's on Western, it kind of feels a bit more peaceful and separated from the other busy pathways since this street is much lower than the next block above with higher foot & vehicle traffic. The aesthetic is a neat cafe vibe with a Danish flair. It's fairly cramped if busy so be prepared to linger outside as space dictates. Not many vegan options for food but they have a vegan toast option worth trying next time. They also have super decent coffee drink options for nice seasonals. There seems to be a staple favorite and then other rotations; one rotation I tried recently was brown sugar rosemary in a decaf oat latte. Pretty nice; I wish there was a smidgens more rosemary coming through, though. Overall, just a pleasant spot for a quick pick-me-up and super friendly staff.

Yelp
A little pricey but the cafe stands out with their pastries and drinks. It is great to see a decent Scandinavian cafe, given Seattle gives quite a bit of Scandinavian vibes, but the other more well known Scandinavian cafe proved to be a bit underwhelming. I went here for a Sunday brunch, just something quick, which works well since there is not really a line and it didn't take too long to get our coffees. We got the churro cruffin (one of their best sellers) and Sunny Seattle (egg, ham, gruyere cheese, bechamel) requested heated up. We also got 2 lattes - one København latte and one Hagen Colada. Churro cruffin was nicely crunchy and dusted with sugar, and a creamy custard inside. It was delightful and large portions, perfect for sharing. The Sunny Seattle is good in terms of it being savory, but despite us requesting it to be heated up, it was still rock cold in most of the area, so that was a miss. The København latte was delicious - it really stood out from a lot of the lattes I have tried in Seattle - there's cardamom in it that meshes really well with the other ingredients. $6.70 for 12oz before tax is a bit steep but this is one of the few items where it is justifiably good. The Hagen Colada had a nice coconut and pineapple note to it which also stood out, but I personally like the København latte more. Seating is limited inside (4 chairs) but on a good day, do take advantage of the outdoor seating! While it is not the best ambience-wise, the food makes up for it. This place can be overlooked as it is located downstairs one block off the Pike Place Market so most tourists will tend to check out the more popular Pike Place Market restaurants, but this is worth a slight detour if you are in for the mood for Scandinavian pastries. After all, it did take 4 years living in Seattle for this place to pop up on Yelp, but I am glad to have found this place.

Yelp
My first visit to this spot, I walked by and wanted to stop in for a coffee and spotted the Churro Cruffin, a Flaky, light, airy and buttery pastry filled with vanilla cream and topped with cinnamon sugar, I had to have one my next visit so fast forward to this stop I basically ran to it past the gum wall and all the iconic spots. I entered the shop and spotted it looking so awesome I must say I have never had anything that has topped the perfect perfection that's going on when you eat it plus everyone is so friendly and helpful at the shop I highly recommend stopping by for a coffee and a Churro Cruffin it will set a standard for sure. Churro Cruffin - A+++++

Yelp
Open early (for Seattle) at 7am. Lots and lots of pastries and cookies. I was actually looking for something bread-like, not necessarily sweet, but wasn't able to find that... so I ended up with a Koign - Amann, a flaky buttery sugary pastry. I don't like overly complicated things or lots of competing flavors, so appreciated the simplicity of this. I chose this place because it's super close to where I was staying near Pike Place but wasn't right in the middle of all the market hustle and bustle (it's located just at the "bottom" on Western Avenue). If you're looking for a pastry or sweet nibble, it's worth a stop in. 2024: 29/100

Yelp
Really yummy food, great portion sizes, good coffee and really friendly staff. The cakes and pastries looked amazing, I withheld the temptation. Limited seating inside so make sure on those colder wet Seattle days, you wrap up if you want to sit down.
google avatar

Dani M.

Yelp
This place was on my go-to list for visiting Seattle and I finally got to try it! The pastries are all so beautifully made and tasty- I ordered their salted caramel latte and it was amazing, not overly sweet. I also got the ham quiche. There's limited seating inside but tons more outside making it more of a grab n go type of cafe. Staff were friendly and I'll definitely return when I'm back in town!
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
This is a cute coffee place located very close to Pike Market. It has several seating if you want some rest before continuing the journey to explore Pike. Must try the croffin. Crispy and fresh with yummy cream inside. The coffee is very nice. We also got the banana choco bread which is good.

Yelp
Freya Bakery in Seattle is known for its Nordic-inspired pastries, like cardamom buns and rye bread. It focuses on high-quality, handmade baked goods with local ingredients, offering a cozy, community-driven atmosphere. Featuring Freya's cups before and after

Yelp
I'm grateful I don't live anywhere near Freya Bakery because if I did I'd likely be a diabetic in a year as their cardamon knots are addictive. I love doughnuts, delicious cakes, and a well baked cookie but I'd give them all up if I could eat cardamon knots daily. They were so tender, cinnamon vanilla doughy deliciousity that I dream about. Freya Cafe is small, so go in with a plan because this isn't a secret hidden spot. How could it? Even with my terrible sense of smell I could smell the tastiness before I saw the cafe. They have a menu on-line if you wish to take a peek and strategize! Service was wonderful as well. Very warm, very attentive. I appreciated their enthusiasm in the face of the growing line. Highly, highly recommend!
google avatar

Jasmine N.

Yelp
Nice little bakery, a little tucked away from the main street. They caught my eye because of the cruffins and pear creme brulee but they also have a coffee menu! Currently they have a bananas foster latte so we tried that. Their cruffins go fast so don't miss out in the morning! I expected the pear creme brulee to be warmed- more of a regular fruit pastry with a light custard. Bananas foster latte has a strong caramelized banana flavor in a smooth cup of latte. They sell some bags of Hagen Coffee Roasters beans. The Queen Anne location has more.
google avatar

Jarred D.

Yelp
Went here twice. First time, had amazing coffee. The Berry Latte was perfectly sweet. Loved that it came both hot and iced. Second time, ordered the same thing but it was extremely watered down and was mostly just milk. It was really disappointing.
google avatar

Julia G.

Yelp
This is an outstanding bakery. All of the pastries that we ordered were delicious, we unfortunately tried them on our last day in Seattle so we were unable to return. The churro cruffin was super soft and was filled with a delicious cream. Do yourself a favor and try this pastry. The Kobenhaven latte was such a cozy drink, perfect for the fall time. I'd definitely recommend these pastries over the options in Pike Place.

Yelp
Freya Bakery & Coffee is a hidden gem and easily missed because it is off the beaten path below Pike Place Market on Western Ave. If you're near the famous Gum Wall, look towards Ghost Alley Coffee and you'll see a sign on the wall that shows Freya's logo and a large arrow that says "Down The Alley". Follow the path that leads down a bunch of stairs to Western Ave. Freya has a warm and cozy Scandinavian vibe. I love their packaging on their cups and their simple decor. They have delicious drinks and baked goods. Freya is now added to my list of go-to options for coffee and pastries in the market. They are totally worth the extra effort to patronize. While there, you might as well check out the other businesses in the area, including the new Overlook Walk that conveniently leads you to The Waterfront as you savor each sip of your coffee and admire the stunning views.

Yelp
Was walking by and was craving something sweet--Freya's was a delightful surprise! The staff were very friendly, welcomed us in, and I got myself a blueberry cheese danish. Not only was the danish visually beautiful, its crust was flaky, and the cheese filling it itself was creamy and not too sweet. The bakery itself is compact, so seating is limited but if you are just by yourself you can definitely grab a seat and sit down for a bit to enjoy a nice warm drink with your baked selection.

Lily K.

Yelp
Amazing food, customer service was great! Get the turkey and bacon sandwich, so so good. Coffee was also so good!!
google avatar

Yelp
You need to come here. We got 8 different things this morning and it was amazing. We will be back again tomorrow. The churro muffin is out of this world. The blueberry danish... to die for. So freaking good. Everything was absolutely delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
I only tried the pastries but would go back for the coffee. Service was very quick. There were not many seating options indoors, mostly outdoors. The cardamom roll I got was very strong and yummy.

Yelp
I work in downtown and had to run an errand for pickup. On the way to my destination, I know that I had to pick up or at least stop somewhere for lunch. I stumbled across this cafe on my way and saw that they had Scandinavian baked goods! The staff was VERY nice and helpful! I got the grilled Brie and prosciutto toast with their pear brûlée danish and their original very own Scandinavian latte! Excellent menu items by far! The pear brûlée is something you should try! The place is popular for grab and go. Recommend coming here, the place is cute too!

Tina

Yelp
Place is small, but I like the latte and food there. My husband and I had the sandwich and quiche; and they are delicious.

Gwen L.

Yelp
Nice cafe with a cute European ambiance, friendly service and delicious pastries. Tiny, but great for take out.

Yelp
OMG THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!!! Delicious, savory and memorable. It's as if we walked into a bakery and everything was fresh. Which it basically was. So THANK YOU! for a wonderful quick meal.
google avatar

Gabi Z.

Yelp
I love this place! All of their syrups are homemade. I tried the banana foster latte, and it was not super sweet or super bitter... just right. I also tried their croissant muffin and that was a lot bigger than I expected to be from the pictures posted on here highly recommend trying it. I really like coffee shops that have fun flavored lattes so this place does just that. The coffee itself is very smooth. Inside the store, there is very limited seating. There's a bench and maybe six chairs inside.
google avatar

Shanul M.

Yelp
Probably one of the most delicious cup of coffee that I've ever had. Hand crafted with care! This coffee shop is hidden below the public market and although it's small but it's definitely a hidden gem with their specialty coffee. I also ordered their chocolate chip cookie and even though I didn't get to enjoy it with my coffee cuz I forgot about the cookie I ate it later and it was delicious and soft on the inside and lightly crunchy on the outside! I also got a bag of espresso coffee beans to go so I'm excited to try that out with my own espresso machine.

Imani M.

Yelp
A very cute hidden gem of Seattle nestled between pikes place and the waterfront. I tried the cardamon bun as recommended by one of the staff. it was DELISH. dense, flavorful, perfectly spiced and not too sweet

Natalie L.

Yelp
Small ma and pa shop with a cozy feel. We got a raspberry cake that tasted like a beefed up pop tart. The coffee latte was amazing as well. It was rich and creamy! We will definitely be back for more

Yelp
western ave has historically offered up some great places to check out and freya is no exception. we may have been on the beginning of the rush this morning having come across from west seattle on the 9am water taxi. we managed to get a table outside and ordered a cardamom twist and a spanikopita pastry. we cut them in half and both remarked how excellent they each were. the spanikopita's lamination was on point but it was a tad bit underbaked in the center, probably due to the feta/high moisture content. trust me that this was a forgivable issue because the flavor and overall quality were both great. the cardamom twist roll was full of cardamom which i adore but if you don't like that flavor or don't like an overload of it, i'd go with something else. we both got the class scandinavian latte which was also heavy on cardamom and almond flavors but truly yummy and well made. i don't tend to frequent the market area but i will say that freya is a place i'd go back to again in a heartbeat. its tiny so your best bet is probably order to go but on the early side, you're apt to snag a spot to sit and be able to savor whatever you've chosen from the pastries and breakfast/sandwich offerings.

Yelp
Good coffee, definitely hit the spot. Very kind workers. You can see them making pastries fresh in the back. Small seating for waiting inside and water cups :)

Yelp
The BLTA is excellent, we went back twice in two days for it. The pastries are also spot on.

Yelp
Grilled Brie and Prosciutto $13: This is served warm on their house baked bread, and is so delicious. I had this on my first visit and this was precisely the reason I wanted to come back. Our first time we happened across this place on our e-bike ride. This time I walked from my office, and I had to walk up 103 steps to get back! And I'd do it again for this! Would also get these again: - Almond Croissant $6.85 - Spanakopita $5.95: We toasted this at home which made it so tasty. Unable to say how it tastes un-toasted. If I recall, another customer asked for one of their items to be toasted to eat on site, but they declined (I forgot the reason). So just keep in mind if you want to toast items you should plan on taking them home. - Ham and Cheese Bechamel $6.05: Also ate this at home toasted. Would likely pass next time. They weren't bad, they just didn't capture my heart. - Director Snail $5.75: chocolate croissant - Pear Brûlée $5.95 ***** My Star Ratings: 1 Star - Terrible. Just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars - Meh. Unlikely for me to return. 3 Stars - OK. Open to coming back, but wouldn't go out of my way to. 4 Stars - Yummy! Will definitely return if I haven't already. 5 Stars - AMAZING!!! Would plan my day or even a trip around eating here.

Yelp
This is an amazing jewel box of a bakery with lovely Scandinavian-French vennoiserie. We were on the way to Pike Place for a coffee but made a detour to this neighborhood place. The coffee is outstanding as well as the variety of pastries. I has a delicious cinnamon kouign amann and my husband had the Swedish style cinnamon roll. Absolutely delicious!
google avatar

R C.

Yelp
The morning pastries were excellent! Their service was exceptional especially since I blundered with my pick up order. I placed a pick up order but did not notice that I had the wrong date. Fortunately, they still honored my order during the same day pick up. My family really appreciated their kind gesture.

Yelp
It was my last day in Seattle so I walked from my hotel to the shop for a quick bite. This was one of the 'breakfast and brunch' options that kept coming up and had good reviews so I thought, why not? I will say that everything looked delicious. Ordered the Sunny Seattle to enjoy in the shop and a box of yummies to take home. The husband and children enjoyed the blueberry tart, double red (raspberry) croissant, raspberry slice (my fave!), chocolate rum ball, churro cruffin and cinnamon social. I didn't get a chance to try a drink since I'd already had coffee but it smelled good in there when the lady was making one. Overall, happy with my choice of pastries and would definitely stop in again whenever I'm back in Seattle.
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
The desserts here are outstanding! Hands down the best almond croissant I have ever had! The churro cruffin a close second. Not too sweet and baked to perfection this is my favorite Seattle bakery, highly recommended!
google avatar

Makoto C.

Yelp
I was rushing to Pikes Place to get a pastry when I passed by Freya on the way. I saw a lady eating a peach pastry and decided to try it myself. Holy moly, this thing is amazing. It's got a real peach in the middle of it on top of crème brûlée type of filling. The pastry is flaky, and buttery, and oh so delicious. It was a pleasure to eat. Sorta like the stuff you might find at the Capital in The Hunger Games. 5 stars and chefs kiss.

Danny B.

Yelp
The girl with the long dark hair here is rude. I specifically asked for my drink iced. Two times. Even was rung up iced and she looked at me like she was going to Murder me after I told her it was incorrect. Guess I should have waited to tip them well. Don't go here if you want to have a good experience. Pastries are hard and dry. Coffee is not how you paid for it
google avatar

Tara B.

Yelp
Loved this small spot! Everything looked amazing and the churro croissant that I ended up ordering, from the recommendation of the girl behind the counter, was amazing! Really need to have a group of people so you can all order different things and share Next time I am up in the area I'll be stopping in and trying more delicious looking baked goodies.

Yelp
I read so many good reviews about the cruffin, I had to get one. I was not expecting how big it would be. It was huge. The outer edges were crunchy and the center was light and airy. The filling was delicious. I would highly recommend t
