13 Best Restaurants in Nevada City and Grass Valley

"A local classic for family gatherings and celebrations, this is a place to abandon dietary restrictions and live large like it’s 1985. In the lavish setting, brick walls and chandeliers abound as diners feast on escargot and cheese fondue, blue cheese-crusted steak, and chicken Parmigiana, but don’t skip the over-the-top desserts. The cocktails here deliver — the OG Martini is a no-brainer — and the wine list is quite possibly the most comprehensive in town." - Flora Tsapovsky

I haven't had anything here that wasn't phenomenal. This last time, I went on a Sunday evening with my mom. There was a live band playing. We ordered the baked brie for an appetizer, and each ordered filet mignon with lobster. Our meals also come with perfectly mashed potatoes and garlic green beans. The atmosphere was lovely. Our server provided the best service. I look forward to next time.

OH MY GOODNESS! Have you ever been to Friar Tuck’s Restaurant and Bar in Nevada City? If not, you MUST GO! We ended up finding this place on accident because we went to the Victorian Christmas. For some reason We thought there would be more street vendors selling food. We walked up to this restaurant and asked if they had any openings, of course they asked you have a reservation. I said, that would probably make more sense since you guys packed. They told us an hour and a half. Just owner just happened to be walking by and said, come with me. He brought us into the bar where there was actually a table to sit down. I told him, we actually have six people in our group, not two. Not a problem, two people sat at the bar and the rest sat at a table. They were slammed, but she would never know because the service was so excellent. Hands down, it was the best service, ambiance, and chicken parm I have EVER had. Instead of the traditional pasta, the chicken was served on top of mashed potatoes, which was such a delicious twist. The owner was incredibly friendly, walking around, giving hugs to long-time customers, and making new guests feel so welcome. I told the owner how refreshing it was to see him walk around and be so nice and so my mom and I took a picture with him. He literally handed me his business card with his personal phone and said if you ever need anything when you’re up in town, just call me. SO RARE!!! If you're looking for a fun out-of-town date night, Friar Tuck’s is the place to be. Friar Tuck’s 111 N Pine Street Nevada City, CA 95959 (530) 265-9093 — get a reservation today! I’d love to know what you think of this place! #NevadaCityEats #DateNightIdeas #BestChickenParm #FriarTucks #NorCalDining #SupportLocal #FoodieFavorites #OutOfTownAdventures #NorthernCaliforniaRestaurants #WeekendGetaway #LocalRestaurants

Google
This is one of our favorite local spots to visit. The food and drinks are great quality and the staff are always super friendly. We have also brought our baby a couple times and they have been very accommodating. The live music is amazing! Highly recommend whether you’re in town for the day or live in Nevada County!

Google
Our dinner at Friar Tucks was excellent. During Victorian Christmas it was very busy but we did have a reservation and were seated promptly at our reserved time. We got the Nottingham cheese fondue, wedge salad, tuck burger and the filet. Everything was amazing. Amber our server made our experience with wonderful suggestions and top notch service. We will definitely be back!

Google
I love this place. The food was fabulous. We both had the pork cordon Bleu and I had the wedge salad and my friend had the escargot. Both were delicious. The service was great and there was live music 🎵. Couldn't have gone better. We got out of there being charged only $150, plus tip. I think it was a bargain.

Google
I have been to this restaurant for years and unfortunately this time the food was awful. Not just not good but awful. The calamari was bad(I suspect it was either old or fried in rancid oil). I did not eat much but my son did and after we left the restaurant he threw up several times. I called the restaurant several times to discuss what happened with no response from them. Not only was it very expensive but to make one I'll is a shame. Too bad they didn't care enough to return my phone call. Go elsewhere, Taco Bell is better

Google
It's been a while since I've eaten At Friar Tucks. I went through the reviews. They were either fives or threes so I was wondering what had changed. Our favorite fondue meal was no longer offered, but a reasonable substitute was delicious. Service was excellent and price was reasonable.

Yelp
I've lived in Nevada County most of my life and Friar Tucks was always a favorite of mine but something has changed. This was once a restaurant that offered great service and exciting food but my family and I went last night, spent almost $200 and left vowing we would never return. The service was horrible and they made us sit in the bar area because the bartenders were the only servers on staff that night. Ok, no problem. We ordered 2 appetizers- the calamari which was tough, obviously not fresh and tasted like old greasy fry oil. The second was the escargot which were obviously "off" and not fresh by any means. The food was ill prepared, frozen, not fresh and sloppily presented. It just makes me so sad as a local resident to see this restaurant decline in such a way. My hope is that the owners will see this and make some changes, changes they've been aware of for sometime now and have obviously not taken to heart. We will never go again.

Yelp
A week off the grid by the Yuba River, went into Nevada City several times for food and ice cream. We came across FT's and loved the food so much we went there twice in that week. Stand outs: - Tuck's Onion Bread - un-believable. The bread was dense, hearty and full. I'm so used to the same (sorry, boring) sour dough bread popular in SF that this bread was such a new and satisfying taste and texture. We loved the way the dish simulated a French onion soup with the creamy melted cheese on top. - Escargot - served with the same delicious bread. So flavorful! - Tempura Prawns - light and full battered. The house made batter makes a huge difference in the quality. The chili aioli dipping sauce brought out the flavor of the prawns and batter nicely. - Salmon with Sweet Potato Au Gratin was my favorite! The potatoes were sliced perfectly and with a hint of sweetness.... I could have had several servings of this as a main. - The Smoked Burrata salad had a nice smokey flavor - We also had the ribeye one night, which was good, but not too outstanding. Every single person in the bar works hard. One night we went, it was near closing time and not too many people there. Got great service from the bartenders and Ken, the owner, who greeted us and talked with us for a bit, which we both enjoyed. The second time we went in, they were absolutely packed and every server, bartender, food runner, busboy and kitchen staff were on the floor helping each other out, even Ken was bussing tables, greeting people and handing out menus. It's a good welcoming vibe. I can't wait to go back again!

Yelp
Disappointing! You removed all vegetarian options on New Years Eve! There are so many vegetarians in this town. Surely you can do better than this?!

Yelp
My wife and I came here for a date night during Victorian Christmas. It was very busy but we had a reservation and were seated promptly at our designated time. Amber was our server and was awesome. She made great recommendations and provided fantastic service. The food was great. We started with the Nottingham cheese fondue. Carrots, cauliflower, apples, mushrooms and bread were all delicious dipped in the rich, warm cheese. We also started with a wedge salad that was outstanding. My wife got the filet and I had the tucks burger. Both juicy and cooked perfectly to order. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
The main reason I went to Friar Tuck's was to enjoy their well known regular (not cheese) fondue. They had a variety of seafood and meat. They no longer have it on the menu and I was so bummed. We went during Victorian Christmas and they indicated they had overbooked. Luckily we had reservations. That was my last visit. It was a bit loud but it was very crowded as well.

Yelp
We sent an email directly to the restaurant with no response. Sorry that we need to leave this poor review but we are out of $300 for the worst meal ever on 12/22. Our entrees, two lamb and one prime, were served cold and before our cheese fondue. We returned them, only to get reheated food, and a prime rib now not cooked to order. There was no apology or offer to reimburse. Our son ended up sick after testing the food before his bride ate it.

Yelp
We came down from Chico to Nevada City for Victorian Christmas, and happened upon Friar Tuck's by chance, and I'm so glad we did! As you can imagine, it was BUSY with the streets shut down for vendors and people swarming the small downtown area, but we were able to be seated on the patio almost immediately. Even with the extraordinarily busy nature of the evening, our server (Yoav?) was attentive and charismatic. The food, unsurprisingly, was phenomenal... and a welcome alternative to the food truck vendors. Between the three of us, I was able to try the wedge salad, French onion soup, sausage & peppers, prime rib, and creme brulee. I'm kicking myself for not ordering the cheese fondue, but I guess that just means we'll have to return. A dog friendly patio and clean washrooms were icing on the proverbial cake! I've always known Nevada City is charming, but I had no idea what a gem we'd find in Friar Tuck's.

Yelp
This restaurant had a really fun atmosphere. They had a small band playing old school music - which was really fun. We were sitting near the bar area so we could see the singers. The Moscow Mule was good, but the dirty martini that my father-in-law ordered was not. He asked for it to be extra dirty, and he was not pleased. So we ordered extra olive juice, and that didn't taste very good. The spicy jalapeño drink was delicious. The onion bread was delicious. The hors d'oeuvre with the fig wrapped in bacon was absolutely one of the best hors d'oeuvres. I've had. I would definitely order this again. Salty and rich and flavor. The beet salad was delicious. My father-in-law states that the pork chop was delicious. I myself shared a porterhouse with my fiancé. That meal was not good. It came out sliced and was not a good piece of meat. I'm used to a porterhouse coming out, not sliced up and nice and thick. my meal came with the sweet potato au gratin. That didn't taste very good. But asparagus that came with our meal was delicious. I would not order my meal again. The service was great. They were very kind and they all had smiles on their face. I would recommend this restaurant for the atmosphere and for some of their delicious food.

Yelp
Gosh. I'm not happy with the very very small portion of food for a very very BIG price! $35.00 salmon (4" x 2 1/2 and that's a generous description!) 'dinner' that came with three small croquettes. That's it!!! Wanted a salad so ended paying another $14.00 for a soggy Caesar salad. The ONLY saving grace was the amazing musician playing live on the outside front patio. He was fantastic to say the least. Three stars because of the musician otherwise it would have been a one star

Yelp
This was our second time eating here, both times during the Victorian Christmas Festival. To say it was busy would be an understatement! They were well organized, and our server, Lila, was attentive and friendly. In our group of four, everyone enjoyed their meal. We started with some salads and onion bread, which is very yummy and dense. I had the crispy salmon with the croquettes. The salmon was indeed crispy, yet tender and cooked to a perfect doneness. Others in our group had the chicken parmesan and the beef wellington, both of which were thoroughly enjoyed. Portion sizes seemed reasonable, and no one in our group left hungry! We were a bit disappointed that the full menu was not available this year, but that's understandable given it's particularly busy during the festival. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation time and were turned away, told to return at the exact time instead. That seemed pretty unnecessary since for a 5:30 reservation the table would have been available already (and we were planning to start with cocktails). Overall, though, we enjoyed our meal and plan to return the next time we're in town.

Yelp
We took a break from Friar Tucks as the menu had changed. But now they have a new and amazing chef. The food is cooked to perfection, Salads are back and you can add a side of meat (Salmon, chix, steak) The wines are great, And the desserts are amazing. We had had the home made pasta, yummy. Would love to try the new pizza, just have to have a late date. Tucks has a great crew of friendly staff and it feels like home again. We need to support our locals, we have lost so many, Please go try out the new chef and the food, you will be happy you did. Downtown Nevada City is such a fun place to visit.

Yelp
Friar Tuck's is a gem. It's that special place you go to get that experience you don't get anywhere else. The entertainment is top notch. The staff is kind and welcoming. The food and drinks are exceptional. If you want to be part of something special, look no further.

Yelp
I have been coming to Friar Tuck's for 20 years, I even remember it before it burned down. I have been faithful throughout the many changes Tuck's has gone through, no matter what; the reliable old world style cheese fondue and oil fondue were constants, even when stickers were left on apple slices and bread pieces had green mold. Nothing could convince me FTR was unworthy. Until last night. For a party of 6, our $450 bill for extremely mediocre portion sizes and execution was devastating, to top it all off our waiter was rude and acted like we were inconveniencing him by being there. I don't think I'll be giving any more chances to this once beloved institution of Nevada city unless oil fondue is brought back.

Yelp
Ambiance and bar is always great. Annoyed that the menu was changed when you were packed every night with the old one. Wish you still had the breadsticks. The old cheese fondue and what came with it was WAY better. PLEASE Friar Tucks. Bring back some old favorites and better apps and maybe a bar menu and the breadsticks.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for dinner tonight with another couple. The other couple were somewhat regulars so when we entered the bar area, Ashley, the bartender brought over their drinks but ignored us. After 20 min I had to go up to the bar to ask if we could place an order for cocktails. Then my pasta dinner arrived but no one else's dinner came. After about 25 min another person in our group had to go up to the bar to ask if someone could find out what happened to the rest of the orders. Finally my husband's Caesar salad came but the chicken he ordered to go with it did not. That took another 20 min. At this point my dinner was completely cold and everyone else had finished theirs. By the way, I ordered the fettuccine with seasonal vegetables but somehow they forgot the vegetables. What in the hell has happened to this place. And by the way, this whole time the owner was in the back doing who knows what, but certainly not paying attention to the general operation of the restaurant. This is an absolute shame. This use to be a well run absolute gem of a restaurant. It employed qualified individuals and served excellent food.

Yelp
The filet mignon was incredible! So was the creme brulee. The ambiance is beautiful our group loved our choices and the staff were accommodating. Very upscale. Loved the vibe.

Yelp
Nice night spot for music and entertainment. Alcohol drinks were light (not a lot of alcohol in them) and the food was expensive and not very good. Ordered escargot and crab cakes as appetizers and decided after the first bite to have my entree somewhere else. The escargot was a bit rubbery and lacked flavor. The music was good, the service was really good and they ended the night with a live singer who made the experience a memorable.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for years! Its located on North Pine street off of Broad Street in Nevada City. They used to have a happy hour menu that started at 430pm. Now the bar opens at 4pm but no food is served until 5pm I have been lucky enough to be served by Johny ( John ) the bartender who has been there for almost 26 years! Best server and gteat attitude that knows how to make an awesome specialty cocktail! We started off with a cocktail..i had a nice Syrah and my boyfriend had the friar tuck old fashioned whiskey cocktail. Nice way to start! I had the tuna carpaccio ...omg..so fresh and tasty! My new favorite! He ordered the tuck burger with bacon and fries...the burger was huge and the fries were nice and crunchy! He had to take home the other half of the burger! The ambience is classy yet casual. Love the dim lighting! They have live music (see pic) . The bar seating is separate from the dining room..so take your pick! I love that they are located in the heart of Nevada City..so many shops and restaurants. I lived in Nevada City for over 10 years..great vibe! Always consistent with their food and service!

Yelp
We called ahead for reservations a special dinner to celebrate 6 months. (IYKYK). Mind you this was 30 days in advance! We had planned this also because we had heard their fondue was amazing and wanted to cross it off our "Fun Let's Do it" list. On arrival we had to wait. A VERY LONG TIME! Then when we asked about being seated, all the seats were taken and they had no table for us. Somehow they produced a small table the literally put in the middle of the room so we were back to back with the table behind us snd very little room for others to walk. Certainly the table was too small to enjoy fondue. The ambiance of the restaurant itself had a really fun vibe. We tried to make the best of it to salvage our evening. I had never tried escargot snd we thought it would be fun to try it together. Hubby being an experienced snail eater (truth lets just call it what it is: SNAILS!) talked me into it against my better judgement. WIFE-1 HUBBY-0 He said it was the worst escargot he had ever tried. The sauce was very salty and the snails overcooked. Me-I think who wants a raw Snail? Thinking they are not cleaned out I'm happy they are cooked well done. Except they were rubbery. Like chewing on meat gristle! Clearly that was strike two! We didn't have fondue due to our impromptu seating arrangements. While it was disappointing we are going to give them another chance this December when we travel the 3 hours to attend the Victorian Christmas. The food we did order besides the escargot was good. The service slow but in our post-COVID days it isn't always the owners fault in not being able to find good help.

Yelp
We went here for my in-laws' 50th anniversary dinner. This is one of their go-to restaurants in their area. It is nestled in the beautiful historic victorian era downtown of Nevada City. I absolutely love this area because it is so beautiful. The restaurant looks small but once you go inside, it's actually pretty big. They have live music going. I love the vibe inside. It was surprisingly very busy even though it was pouring like crazy outside. It's obviously very popular. Service was great. Our waitress was friendly. We ordered a few drinks and they were very yummy. Their food is very good. I have no complaints at all, which I rarely can't say. I have to say, their garlic bread was really good! I'll be looking forward to their garlic bread the next time we go here lol. The restaurant is located in the perfect place.

Yelp
When out-of-town friends dropped in for a visit, we decided to dine out. Friar Tuck's had availability on Open Table and we arrived early with moderate expectations. We were promptly seated. It is always nice when you are pleasantly surprised. The cozy ambience was enhanced by a guitarist who skillfully sang covers of songs by James Taylor, the Eagles, and other easy-listening artists. Lila, our server, was cheerful and professional. The menu had a good variety of both appetizers and main courses. The dishes arrived beautifully plated and tastefully prepared. The only hiccup was when my wife and I ordered a glass of Pinot Noir. We are not sommeliers, but we drink enough wine to have, if not an expert palate, at least a developed one. Something was off. It is rare for us to send wine back, but we realized that this wine was close to undrinkable. Lila confirmed that the wine came from a new bottle so she was surprised that the wine was unsatisfactory. With alacrity, she returned with another glass of the same wine from a different bottle. This was much better and we were soon again toasting our friends. The owner also stopped by our table with a pleasant greeting which is always a nice touch. We looked at the dessert menu which in many restaurants is uninspiring. Here, however, were several tempting options. We decided to order the chocolate fondue which was an exquisite ending to an enjoyable meal. In one night, this restaurant joined the list of our favorite eateries in Nevada City. We will return hopefully sooner than later.

Yelp
Everything continues to decline here. I was embarrassed the last time I went there with friends. The friend's salmon was inedible and my steak (the wrong cut) was like chewing on a baseball mitt despite my request for medium rare. We must have asked for bread 8 times but it never came. Still very weary of returning after the recent health code violations.

Yelp
The only reason I'm giving one star is because I can't give them zero! Worst experience we've ever had, literally had rat excrement fall out of the ceiling and onto our menu. When we brought it to the waitress' attention, she shook the scat off the page onto the ground and left it there. She said she didn't really know what to do or how to handle it besides to give us new plates. We kept our original menus. I would have thought at the least one of the owners would've come by and apologized for the inconvenience, yet that didn't happen. In fact, the owner seemed to avoid us instead. And this is after this same restaurant had already supposedly addressed a health department complaint regarding rats, so... idk. Maybe that needs some more attention. Also the waitress charged us for almost $80 worth of drinks we didn't order! Luckily, the bartender (the owner's son) resolved that issue for us). We've been going here for years and it's really sad to say we won't be going back to try it again. Every other time we've been in, the owner would come and greet us, make sure our experience was up to par. Now this happens and both owners didn't have the guts to come apologize and see how our experience was. It's not often that one dining experience can taint years of relatively positive or at least consistent dining, but this was really an off putting circumstance. I really hope they pull it together soon, otherwise I don't see them being around for much longer. Rat poop and over charges aside, they removed many of their menu staples they were known for (ie: hot oil fondue). We were told that they had a Michelin star chef come through and help them revamp their menu and elevate their offerings. Seems like they shouldn't throw that term around as their offerings and presentation are far from Michelin level. Half of the table got their dinner 5-7 minutes before the other half (besides the child- that's understandable) so half of our food was cold by the time everyone was served. The deserts were good, although servings were smaller than in recent years.

Yelp
Came here with family to celebrate my Mom's birthday. The live music made for an excellent atmosphere. The food was excellent and the service was very attentive. Was well worth the hour drive!

Yelp
Lovely place to celebrate birthday! We sat inside and felt intimate and romantic. The live music was awesome and service was great. Food was delicious!

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go when in Nevada City. Always great appetizers, food and drinks. We had a great time sitting at the bar watching the mixologist make interesting and fun drinks while we ate our appetizers, meal and yummy drinks. The live music was really good and the total ambiance was festive. People walking by were friendly and the staff really took good care of us.

Yelp
Visiting Nevada City for their Christmas Fair. Something that is well planned and Businesses are aware and can prepare for the crowds. Not the case with FTR. Went in asked to be seated were told by staff that seating was closed. I went on open table and booked for that exact moment. A bit discouraging but cute place a food smelled good. We were seated and our waiter was very nice but not present. Food took over 40 minutes to arrive and that was after I asked for it and they clearly forgot us. Tables seated after with a larger group received their food Prior to Us. That's what you call an FBI clue that you have been forgotten. Our waiter followed up on the situation after I Talked to the front of the house and was disregarded. Then only two of three dishes came out correct a third random order was delivered and It Was almost an argument that we did not Order that dish. So the third was rushed and came Lacking. This was a waste of our money and we should have escalated with management but After being disregarded about the seating and order being lost it was just not worth my energy. We were there to enjoy. I did make our concerns know and management knew they forgot our order that should have been enough for them to make it right. Because of the mistakes we did not eat together which is why we went there. Food was not memorable, lacking in proportions and flavor. I complained about all the above very respectfully and it Fell on deaf ears. When you make A mistake acknowledge and offer a fix. If you follow my reviews I give establishments the benefit of the doubt if they acknowledge and apologize for Any inconvenience. Not the case here we were made to Feel as we were not Wanted there. I do not Recommend this restaurant based on the poor customer service by staff and management. Positive our waiter was friendly But not present.

Paul B.

Yelp
Split a hamburger with my wife and for $25, it should have been more gourmet and memorable. We literally laughed out loud because there's a $3 upcharge for lettuce and tomatoes. So, $28 total or $35 with tax and tip. C'mon man! The steak fries were tasty. Great cocktails. Good service and nice decor.

Chris C.

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place but I have to be honest here the food was just awful my prime rib came out practically raw and cold asked to have it reheated was still cold. Couldn't even eat half of it. I called ahead for my wife's birthday to have them deliver a dessert after our entrees that never came huge disappointment wife ordered a side salad with her dinner that never came. Was just all around a terrible experience not trying to be super harsh but definitely won't be back was not worth over a hundred dollars at all.

Yelp
Amazing food hidden spot in Nevada city a must try when you are in the area!!!! Can't wait to head back and stop by!!!!

Yelp
A wonderful experience all around. Our waitress, Danielle was lovely, friendly, funny and very spot on with everything. John at the bar mixes a find libation and was also very friendly. I didn't get the busser's name but he was on top of everything as well. The burgers were done precisely to our request of med-rare and were delicious. When they found out it was a sort anniversary for us, they brought us a split of champagne on the house! We have been here in the past a few times and have always enjoyed ourselves, but this night was extra special. We visit NC regularly and will be back soon!

Yelp
Disappointing. We had a previous bad experience at Friar tucks, but at the coaxing of friends we decided to try it again for Valentine's Day. We went early, with a reservation, arriving at 4:30 and were seated immediately. Ambiance was lovely. I'll start by saying my husband ordered and loved the duck, so happy with that...but then there was my dish. I ordered prime rib which came with Yorkshire pudding. From there it was downhill. Meal arrived with prime rib overcooked, the accompanying tiny portion of veggies was cauliflower which was very over cooked and some pieces were actually burnt. While I understand that there is a fair amount of fat in prime rib, 70% of the "beef" served me was fat. Potatoes were gummy....ugh. The Yorkshire pudding was horrible. I know and prepare the recipe often. I would have been embarrassed to put that Yorkshire on a guests plate. Wet, doughy and very dense... totally inedible. So, in essence I had approximately 3 oz of edible dinner and left hungry...

Yelp
My friends and family have had an annual dinner at Friar Tucks for the last 19 years and unfortunately this year is our last. I made reservations for 7:45 pm and received a confirmation that stated to let them know if we were going to be more than 15 min late with the latest seating being 9:00 pm. There is no parking in the area so the majority of our party was a little late. I received a phone call 6 minutes after our reservation asking if I wanted to cancel. I happened to be outside on the sidewalk so we walked in and was immediately seated in a near empty dining room. The waitress was friendly but clearly pre-occupied with the vacuum she carried out and set next to our table. She took our drink order and then proceeded to ask for our appetizer order even though we had just sat down and not had a chance to even glance through the menu. I was drinking water only and my glass was filled at this time. Before the drinks or apps arrived she was back to take our dinner order. Fortunately the vacuum was removed at this time. The drinks and appetizers were served and 4 minutes later, 4 minutes later she informed us that our dinner was ready and she would need to remove some plates. She then proceeded to remove half a basket of calamari and what was left of a $48 cheese fondue. Dinner arrived and my water glass was empty which is how it stayed throughout the meal. There was no offer to refill any drinks even the $14 cocktails. My friend did ask for another drink and even then she didn't ask the table. My steak and frites arrived a little dryer than expected. I asked for a little more peppercorn sauce which she went to ask for in the kitchen which is when the cook yelled a clearly audible vulgarity followed by an inaudible statement. Finally the check was delivered without the table being asked if we wanted desert, which we did want. The food was good, not great and definitely not worth the price charged. Our bill ended up being $450 for the 6 of us and we would have happily paid it had the service been at least decent. I have eaten at Friar Tucks many times as well as other fine dining establishments and this was the worst service I have ever received. I have had much better service at Denny's for a $12 bill.

Yelp
So sad to see how far this beloved restaurant has fallen. Dirty, food is not as good as it used to be, service is marginal. If anyone is a local, you know what I mean. If you're a tourist, then you don't really know how bad it is. Closed by the Nevada Co. Health Dept more than once in the last few years for improper food storage, food spoilage and rat excrement. This new owner does not respect the jewel he purchased, and sadly the restaurant has been very poor since his ownership and most locals won't go near it.

Yelp
It was little busy but not to bad. Our waitress seemed to act like my wife didn't need any extra butter, any extra ranch for the salad. Kept staring as if we were going to run off and not pay the bill. Wait for the food was over an hour, just to receive the salad and some burnt bread... asked for extra butter(got the state, then received cold butter from the fridge). Waited almost another hour to get filet mignon(burnt crips on the ends) mashed potatoes where decent, butternut squash was very oily. My wife wanted to try the deserts and they were ok. Definitely not the best experience and doesn't look like I will be going back there.

Yelp
We come up to this restaurant from the Bay Area for most of our special occasions. Used to absolutely love this place. Went there tonight for Father's Day and my birthday and I must say I am disappointed. The menu is not the same and NOT an improvement! Many of our favorites are gone. Decided to go with the prime rib. Portion was smaller than used to be and I literally had 4 Brussels sprout halves. My fathers NY steak Frites was tough with a lot of gristle and no veggie at all. My wife's prime rib was medium well instead of the medium rare she ordered. ( they did offer to change it out but she said it was ok so no complaints about that just a observation). Sad to say we may be rethinking our special trips for this.

Yelp
I've been to Friar Tucks three times and have left happy each time. Most recently I picked Friar Tucks for dinner with family that live locally and my partner who hasn't been to Nevada City before. I knew the streets would be lit up and the church would look beautiful for the holidays. I've had the bubble and squeak twice and this last time I had the filet. Started with a bottle of Daou for the table and baked Brie to share. All delish. Filet was done perfectly. Finished our meal with chocolate fondue, creme brulee and chocolate mousse. It is definitely a favorite when I visit Nevada City.

Yelp
Excellent service from the wait staff and hostess. Everyone was knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious and they have a nice wine selection to pair with their food.

Yelp
So sad to see how this restaurant has changed in the last few years.. It was always pricey but the food and service was worth it. The menu is limited and very expensive. We made a reservation and requested the front area of the restaurant and even though the restaurant was empty on a friday night we were seated in the back. We ordered cocktails and waited 20 minutes ... still no drinks. After checking out the limited and EXPENSIVE menu we chose to leave. No staff was around ... Oh well! We loved the restaurant when Greg and Rona owned it but it has changed for the worse. All the old staff are gone and replaced with kids wearing tee shirts and jeans.

Yelp
This was one of the worst experiences I have had at a restaurant. My family waited 1 hour when they had plenty of seats open. They allowed a group of two to cut in front of my mom while she had waited to speak to the hostess. At 5pm there were fewer than 16 people seated- they seated 10, and rather than seat us and allow us to share drinks and visit for 15 minutes when we returned at 5:30 only 8 more were seated they insisted we had to wait. They said " we only serve 16 people per 15 minutes." Basic math people. Our host sat 5 people at a table that sat 2 . They had one of us sit in a chair that was in the hallway. Being dismissive and seating people in the smallest booth available instead of the four top up front with room is rude, and we will never go back.

Yelp
Awful food & service. The business would not abide by Cov-Id guidelines during the height of the pandemic. They were also closed by the Health Dept for rat infestation. AVOID this restaurant!!

Yelp
Our server was pleasant. The restaurant is beautiful and clean. The live music was a bit too loud, glad we were in the next room over and not seated in the bar area. We ordered French onion soup and shared a merry men fondue. I have been a Tucks customer for many years, just infrequent. The french onion soup was incredible, as always. Unfortunately, they have done away with the oil fondue and have only cheese now. It included about 4 pieces each of cooked meatballs, sausage slices, prosciutto wrapped chicken bites, 4 pickled carrot sticks, a few pieces of roasted cauliflower, cooked mushrooms, apple slices, and bread cubes. The fondue was good, missed the experience of cooking the meats in the oil though. The server was friendly, but very slow service and they were not super busy. We also had dessert, I ordered a creme brulee to go and in the box it looked like pudding with the broken topping. It was tasty. Just the texture was a bit soupy. For the money, I don't think I would return.

Yelp
A very dear friend recommended going to Nevada City yesterday for Wednesday Summer Nights. We decided to try Friar Tucks instead of street food. The staff was very accommodating and sat us at an outdoor table even though they had reserved signs on them. The menu had a wide variety of items but we both chose the Ceasar Salad with Salmon and a glass of Lava Cap Sauvignon Blanc. The salad was excellent, one of the best Ceasar Salads I have ever eaten. The salmon was cooked to perfection! Our server was attentive, friendly and very personable. She apologized for the band playing right behind us! We didn't mind the band. Wednesday night was a great people watching experience and watching everyone while sitting at Friar Tucks made it even better. We had a great experience & we will be returning soon.

Yelp
Terrible Service. Food is mediocre at best. Fondue offering is strange. Proscuitto wrapped chicken is not my choice for a cheese fondue dipping. Baked brie was overpriced and had a weird sauce/jelly as an accompaniment. It was like a canned cherry pie filling without the cherries. No taste just sweet. Fig jam or Tart cherry Jam would have been a better choice. Crab Cakes were awful. Just tasted like filler with no crab. Must have bought from frozen from a cheap wholesaler and just put in air fryer. I do not know what Michelen Star chef created this menu. Not a lot of options and not good ones at that.
