One of the best brunch spots in Evanston! This Mexican-inspired restaurant gets super busy and boisterous, so I recommend reserving a table ahead of time. Every interaction I had with the staff was pleasant, and despite the busyness, they always made sure my needs were attended to. The atmosphere is very lively with classic Latin music playing over the speakers and fun artwork celebrating the restaurant’s namesake, Frida Kahlo.
It was hard to choose a single dish with the great variety and numerous recommendations, but I settled on the Crunchy French Toast, which was a spectacular choice! The serving was very large, with four thick slices of brioche bread covered in a granola crust. The plating was gorgeous; the brioche was topped with fresh strawberries, more granola bits, lecherita (a type of sweetened condensed milk), warm raspberry coulis, powdered sugar, and the most velvety whipped cream. It was clear through both the presentation and taste that Frida’s puts plenty of care into their food. The French toast itself was buttery and not too sweet. The granola crust added a wonderful crunch and texture to the soft bread. The whipped cream and strawberries really brought the dish together, adding a creamy chill to the warm toast and natural, fruity sweetness.
I will no doubt be returning to try more items on their vast menu. Just observing the other tables’ huge plates inspired my future orders. The pancakes, crepes, and chilaquiles are all highly acclaimed, so it looks like I’ll have to frequent Frida’s for a long time!
