Where to Eat in Boston’s Chinatown

"Chinese barbecue is similar to yakitori in format, where bite-sized cuts of meat are skewered on a bamboo stick, grilled over open fire, and seasoned with dry spices right before serving. At this place, they grill and season the skewers for you. Options range from pork, chicken, beef, and lamb to a variety of vegetables and mushrooms. It has a second location in Brighton." - Valerie Li Stack, Eater Staff

Just arrived in Boston and decided to take a walk through Chinatown, and just happened to stumble across this spot. It was located downstairs in an unassuming building and peeked my curiosity. When we entered, we knew immediately that we'd found dinner for the night. The food was amazing, and the staff was very friendly. Every table was full, but the service was fast and efficient.

Stumbled upon this basement restaurant. Really authentic Chinese BBQ. Beef and mutton skewers were delicious. The clam noodles were the absolute star on the menu. The clams and juicy you could taste the ocean. We came here two days in a row :)

Seafood boil for 2 was delicious, order a side of rice or something else.... Left a bit hungry...but the taste was terrific. Piping hot and super fresh.

Sometimes you just need meat on a stick, crave some delicious Chinese food, and don’t want to break the bank. That’s when you head to Friendship BBQ in the heart of Boston’s Chinatown at 2 Beach St. 🍢🥢 It’s the perfect spot to chug down boba tea 🧋, devour tasty chicken wings 🍗, slurp up some noodles 🍜, and celebrate big moments like your brother’s birthday 🎉! This eatery is fantastic for sharing heaps of yummy dishes with friends and family. The vibe here is all about communal dining and enjoyment. Despite its modest ambiance, rated at 5/10, the place buzzes with the energy of shared meals and laughter. 🎊 What really stands out? Definitely the skewered wonders: the wagyu on a stick and the lamb on a stick are must-tries for their juicy, well-seasoned perfection. 🐄🐑 My personal favorite? Those crispy, flavorful chicken wings—they’re absolutely irresistible! So, whether you’re a regular or planning your first visit, let me know if you’ve experienced the magic of Friendship BBQ. How did you like it? 🌟 Food: 7/10 💸 Affordability: 8/10 🎈 Ambiance: 5/10

Service was speedy and food (especially the mushrooms) was cooked to perfection

We decided to try a combo that said it was good for 3-4 people but easily could have fed more! Everything was amazingly delicious and we loved being able to try a wide variety. I can't wait to go back to try more! We had wonderful service and our waiter was very helpful and though it didn't apply to us, I appreciated that they asked about allergies right away. I wish I could remember our servers name because he was just great. We'll definitely be back! I wish I lived in the area so I could order take out every day 🤣

As a spicy eater, we crave for these dishes every week. We sometimes come twice a week, and we always get the spicy clams noodles, spicy clams and garlic scallops. Those are highly recommended!!!! The service was perfect every time we got there. We will be back many more times :)

Google
We ordered a few skewers, braised pork feet, and grilled chives. The skewers were good although it was kind of cold when we received it. They placed it on this box with candles inside to keep it warm but it barely kept the food warm. The grilled chives were my favorite. We had a problem with the pork feet as they only gave us half a serving. Even our waitress admitted that it was less than what they would give, but would not change it and could not reflect the price on our bill.

Yelp
We came here for lunch. The interior was cute. The service was great and suggested some delicious items. We got 1Braised Lamb Ribs 2Garlic Eggplant 3Chives 4Passionfruit Green Tea 5Mango Slush 6Grilled Scallop 7Garlic Eggplant 8Garlic Oysters 9Pan Fried Chicken Skeleton 10 Skewers: Xingjing Special Lamb, Mongolia Beef, & Chicken Everything was tasty in there own way, but the Braised Lamb Ribs were my favorite. They were well seasoned, crispy and fatty. You can't go wrong with the skewers. They had a dry rub on them that made it delicious. The Garlic Oysters & Grilled Scallops were fresh with a sweet, earthy, spicy taste . Garlic Eggplant & Chives were a perfect balance to our meat heavy meal. The passion fruit green tea was refreshing and sweet. what a perfect place to have a drink & Eat tasty BBQ Skewers

Yelp
I went here for dinner and here is why I gave it 3 stars: The restaurant was packed when we arrived, the staffs are nice and fast. Restaurant are decorated like a street vendor in China. I like the interior and the vibes here. Laid back, this is the type of restaurant you would go, when you want to catch up with your friends, through a quick meal. They have a QR code for u to scan and order food right on your phone. We ordered a bunch of different skewers to try and it was not good at all. They will bring the skewers out for you to grill at your table. However, the meats are too dry, the marinated neither absorbed to the meat or tasty. I haven't been back since so I don't know if the quality of the skewers are better. But I would not recommend the skewers here.

Yelp
I came here with a friend for dinner and had an okay experience. It was a weekday, so surprisingly there were some tables filling up still closer to closing time. We were caught off guard a bit since there was one large party that was getting pretty drunk also. The food was just okay overall. A bit pricey, and each skewer is tiny. The skewers are all brushed with the same seasoning. However, I was just not impressed by the flavors and quality of the skewers since they tasted a little bland. For a table of 2 we spent about $40 each to get full. Points to the unique concept of Friendship BBQ since there are not really any other Chinese Skewer spots in Boston though. What we ordered: - Northeastern Dan Dan Noodles - Set of 10 tofu skin skewers - Scallion Pancake - Lamb skewers - Beef skewers - Chicken skewers - Pork Belly Skewers - Squid Tentacle Skewers - Bowls of rice

Yelp
We came on a rainy Saturday evening for dinner and had zero wait. It's a fun casual spot, great for some good bbq and beers. The skewers were deliciously seasoned, maybe just a little overcooked. The little heater on the table for the skewers almost wasn't needed since we devoured them as soon as they came out. We also loved the easy system of ordering food and asking for the check with our phones. super kind and friendly staff as well! If we lived in the area, this would be a regular spot for us for sure!

Yelp
I loved Friendship BBQ. This is a foodies dream. Endless meat and seafood skewers. It is hidden in the basement of a food court in Chinatown but the restaurant is pretty big and there's a lot of room for bigger parties. I loved all the food we got. The skewers had so much flavor and had great seasoning. Can't wait to come back again!
google avatar

Melanie W.

Yelp
I did not expect to dine here again because I am not a big fan of cumin seasoning but my friend want to eat skewers. The food is better than last time I dine here which was few years ago. My favorite was the grilled eggplant and corn in bucket which the seasoning was just right... but not worth me to come back again unless my friend want to come.

Yelp
You will regret not going here. Amazing food. Even better service. Get the lamb. Must go to in Chinatown!

Yelp
Eating here brings back memories of hong kong street food and stands. At first I thought we cook them ourselves, but the kabobs you have to order and they will bring it out to you. The waiters were really nice and helpful at explaining what to do and how to order. The place was kind of small not a lot of room, but that's how it is in Hong Kong. My family liked it and we'll definitely come back.

Yelp
Very friendly, very good food. You go downstairs and you got this underground feeling where you can order some soju and shoot the shit with some beef sticks. I brought my non Asian friends here and they LOVED it. Flavorful meat sticks and the cold noodles were pretty good! Again this spot is really a good place to drink a few and eat bar food.

Yelp
It was a little tricky to find the actual location. When you enter the building, you immediately go down a flight of stairs on the left. One of those moments where you wonder if maybe you're going the wrong way, but then a second later you realize you're in the right place! The service was quick. We went for lunch. The menu is on a QR Code and you order digitally. Everything came out quickly. We ordered a few different items to share. Everything was good quality. Very happy with the meal. It's a nice place if you want to try new things, as most of the meats you order three little skewers each. Perfect place to go with a friend and try all sorts of things rather than committing to one dish

Yelp
Fun experience and atmosphere to enjoy a variety of skewers! The loss of points are lack of variety in marination of flavors in the meat skewers. They are all spicy flavors which is yummy but will be nice to see more marinated options to choose from. The other part is that the bill adds up quickly while selecting the meats and veggies and range of skewers to enjoy. This area is easy to get to from public transit and located in the heart of chinatown.

Skylar W.

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere. Clean and comfortable restaurant. Service was amazing, our waiter was very friendly and even gave us a free Rose Milk Tea drink. Food well seasoned and the meat melted on our tongues. 10/10!

Yelp
Servers are extremely nice and food is unique. I really enjoy this place and I like their seasoning a lot. I haven't tried something from here and was disappointed. I really like their pan fried stinky tofu and foil enoki. They were the right amount of spice. The foil enoki was so good and the soup that it is boiled in is tasty as well. I want to try their enoki pot next time. I also tried their rice noodles as well and it was also pretty tasty. All their skewers were pretty good and they use the same seasoning for all of it. I am a fan of their fried rice cakes. They were chewy and fried to perfection. The Mongolian beef skewer was quite large but each order only comes with one skewer. Pleasantly surprised their corn was an entire corn on a cob on a stick. Also the 20+10 piece skewer set (forgot what it was called) comes with very small pieces of meat so don't get that just order a la carte or get their friendship combo.

Yelp
The perfect place to unleash your inner carnivore. This spot is my guilty pleasure for a huge cheat day. Each order usually comes with multiple skewers so it adds up pretty quickly. The meat skewers come cooked and placed on a tray that keeps them nice and warm for later. There is a nice rub that comes with each of the meats. It's a little spicy but not unbearable if you don't have a spice tolerance and so salty. For vegetables I recommend the chives which have a similar spice as with the meat skewers for something a little more refreshing. The tofu skin skewers are not to be missed and they come with a whopping 10 per order! Definitely a flavorful experience but the rub can become tiresome quickly as it's scattered on every dish. I think it'll be a nice touch if you allowed the diner to add their own spice via a shaker so they can switch things up themselves.
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
Fun place for a night out with friends! You get a lot of kebabs for a very reasonable price. My favorites were the Pork belly with Enoki & Mongolian beef skewers. For sides, the chives were so good. The only downside is they use the same seasoning for EVERYTHING. I wish they had more variety in terms of flavors. Also if you don't have a spice tolerance, beware. Everything is heavily seasoned and spicy.

Yelp
Great hidden spot, fast service, tasty food and very nice people. We happened to find this restaurant wandering around Chinatown, orders are done via the QR code on the table and come out in quick manner. Had several BBQ sticks (lamb was the best) as well as the spicy fish & tofu (delicious) with fried rice and scallion pancakes. All very good dishes and we had a great time enjoying the food and experience. Owner & employees were very nice and helpful despite the place being busy and full. Will definitely visit again when we're in town.

Yelp
my family walked in during the Chinese new year festival and this place was very accommodating. we had a group of 10 including young children. the owners were absolutely amazing and the food was great too!!! as we had a small wait, the owners (very swest, very polite, and very understanding) were able to open up a large table eventually for us to all sit together. they made us feel welcomed to their home type of feel and I'd recommend this place. will probably go again next year if not sooner!!! thank you if you see this. we had a 1yr old and 4yr old, along with 9,10 ye old and adults. if the owners see this, greatly appreciate your hospitality

Yelp
My favorite item was the cucumber salad, it was the best I have had in Boston yet, perfectly saucy with extra spice as requested and PLENTY of crunchy peanuts and bursting with flavor. I really enjoyed the skewers we ordered they tasted very fresh the chicken skewers were meaty, the wag you skewers had flavor and the fatty beef skewers were exactly that nice and fatty. The meat had great flavor and didn't taste frozen or fried. My companion devoured the entire bowl of the shredded potato fried rice and adding egg was an extra $2 and well worth it! A great dish if you want to get really full. There is very little interaction with the wait staff you place your order through the phone and they bring it over right away and ask you questions if they need clarification. Great meal and will be returning!
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Huge menu selection in a popping part of town- warning that I grew up eating Sichuan food and the food here still messed me up (very spicy). Didn't have a wait, got seated right away. The location is in like the basement off a busy street. Definitely gets popular at the later hours.

Dustin J.

Yelp
Good skewers at a good price! Seasoning was good too and the staff were friendly. Would totally recommend!

Yelp
Very friendly,, and since this was a new experience for us in Chinatown the server was great and walking us through menu ,, not what I planned for but we enjoyed atmosphere and service , chicken and beef on skewers were different and tasty , bathrooms clean and somebody was obsessed with the Chinese beer so I guess we have to snuggle it in our suitcase.

Yelp
The food was great and quite different from the usual - more like street food! First time ordering from this restaurant. Delivery took a while, but all the food was piping hot and fresh which was awesome! Skewer chicken was so tender and well-seasoned. Chicken wings were really good too. The garlic eggplant looks exactly like its pictured on the grubhub menu page and tasted really great - perfect blend of garlic and cilantro with the soft eggplant. Grilled buns, corn and green beans were flavorful and tasty. Shredded potato fried rice was very good. The scallion pancake was a single small round slightly thick pancake, quite different from the usual ones we're used to, and no sauce. Hot and sour egg drop soup was too spicy - had too many jalapenos and red chili peppers. Could only eat one spoonful of it. Wondering how we're going to eat it considering its a large container full - probably diluting it waaay down with water or broth :). They should have a "mild" spicy version of it imo. Overall great experience with slightly different style of food. Will absolutely order again - a new favorite hands down!!

Yelp
Ordered take out and "picnic" at common. Didn't take many photos cause it was wicked windy. This BBQ place represents street food of northern part of China. It seems like they like Tian mian Jiang a lot, it was added to almost all the skewers and wrap we ordered. With that said, its not what I am used to and it's a little too saucy and sweet to my taste. Good portion, some might not come with actual "skewers".
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
This is authentic Chinese BBQ, if you love authentic Chinese BBQ then bully for you man! Me, I'm just a gringo looking for a place to eat. Lots of restaurants are closed, some are offering outdoor dining. Friendship BBQ has their restaurant open with plastic walls separating the other tables. It's late and I just want to eat some chow. I don't want a seafood pot, I simply want a dinner special with rice. Friendship BBQ isn't that type of spot. Its authentic (Whatever that even means) so General Tsos is not one of the options. I ordered a few lamb skewers, ate and left. The lamb skewers were too salty for me, it wasn't enjoyable.
google avatar

Kristen K.

Yelp
Could've been great, but ultimately a disappointing experience. Friendship BBQ is a little basement restaurant that holds a surprising amount of small tables and has the potential to be a really cool later-night spot (if they had a different playlist) with street food-style offerings, but just doesn't deliver. Major gripe is that the skewers were not hot, and the box in each table is powered by tea candles (we had three in our box) which are not enough to keep the skewers warm. Food is otherwise okay, but nothing extremely special. Probably wouldn't return.

Harry R.

Yelp
skewers are very tasty, tinpot dishes are good too. the service is excellent, they keep adding water and giving napkins.
google avatar

Yelp
9/10 great service and authentic Chinese street food cuisine. Loved the atmosphere and the literal "underground" nature of this restaurant. I trust Chinese places where most if not all customers are speaking Chinese- and young too! The variety of food you can order here makes it a fun dining experience and you can't go wrong w any order. My personal favorites were: 1. Rice cake 2. Cold noodles 3. Mongolian beef skewers Food came out a bit cold but the service, atmosphere and quantity of food successfully made up for it!
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
I got the takeout special of 50 skewers for $66 and with tax and tip each skewer came down to about $1.50 which is a really good deal. It came with Lamb skewers x 6, beef skewers x 6, chicken skewers x 3, cooked tendons x 3, chicken wings x 1, head shrimp x 3, squid silk x 3, squid x 3, pork belly x 3, tofu skin x 10, roasted lotus root Slices x 3, Potato Chips x 3, Baked Scallion Pancakes x 1, Baked Steamed Buns x 1, Baked Biscuits x 1. Each skewer was well seasoned and had a lot of yummy spicy cumin flavor. The lamb, beef, chicken were all tender and the meat did not have any extra gristle or fat. For two of us this was extremely filling and we had leftovers to munch on throughout the rest of the day.

C C.

Yelp
Overpriced food in a basement restaurant. Do not order the seafood platter. It's more like a gumbo than Korean food. The best thing to try are the lamb and the scallion. We left hungry, so will you.

Borui L.

Yelp
Do not go to this place! All the bbq have exactly the same flavor. And the attitude of the staff here is rude. I came with my bf and we got a very bad experience. We would never com

Yelp
I was pretty eager to try this place because Boston doesn't really have an authentic Chinese BBQ skewers place. After trying this place, it definitely beats my expectations of skewers quality and flavor. From a service perspective, there is room for improvement. In terms of skewers, my friend and I ordered beef, lamb, chicken, Mongolian special lamb, octopus, and grilled scallops. Everything is very good and the spice they put on really adds to the taste. Highly recommend the octopus and Mongolian lamb. The New Orleans chicken also has a special smoky bbq taste. To wrap up, we ordered a spicy hot noodle soup to finish out the night. What leaves much to be desired is the service. I ordered a draft beer that is half foam, service was slow, but understandable given they just revamped this place and started fresh. They also charged me extra accidentally. From a pricing stand point, we spend about 40 dollars each which is slightly on the expensive side but hard to argue with where the location is. Overall, definitely worth a try if you are looking for some authentic chinesE skewers

Yelp
I'm writing this review because my girlfriend couldn't stop gushing at the place. So many food options to choose from. The skeleton children is well seasoned and spicy. The fried bun with condensed milk is also a must try for dessert. Will be back

Yelp
Sometimes it's the best feeling when you have a great food at a restaurant you just went in spontaneously. That's what's we did with Friendship BBQ in Boston. The smell of cumin and chili flakes filled the air and I loved it ‍
google avatar

Carolyn L.

Yelp
This place is average. My friend suggested we check out this place, and we were excited to try this place out. We ordered the enoki mushroom pot and combo of small beef, lamb, and pork...and I could say they were SMALL. We realized that we should have just ordered individually skewers, which we tried the Mongolian beef that had 4 pieces on one skewer. I would recommend the Mongolian beef skewer. The service was slow, and the owner seemed to be the only one that would check in on us. Before we got our last skewer, one of the waiters gave us our bill. We might come back to try more skewers and hope the service would be better.

Yelp
Authentic and reasonably priced. Highly reccomend! We got beef tendon (3), gizzards (3), chicken (3), xingjian special lamb (3), fish tofu (3), green bean (3), and some more. Some absorb the seasoning better than others. The seasoning is pretty authentic from China and delicious, according to my friend who ate something like this in China. I like the lamb and the fish tofu the most, while my friends like the chicken and green bean. I think the seasoning is the same for pretty much everything; it's not spicy at all. We also got the spicy crawfish because they were doubling the portion for the same price. Now this is something. It was a giant portion for 2 for $18, well deserved the price. I usually can handle the mala spicy in Boston pretty well (my nose just gets a bit runny). But this dish is the closest to the spicy in China or Hong Kong in Boston. My eyes were crying and this is the first time this ever happened (not even eating 2x spicy ramen does this). It's not just plain spicy, but it also had a lot of flavor. We cooked the leftovers in some rice noodles to try to preserve the flavor. We had to dilute it with 1/3 plain water, and even then it was so flavorful and spicy. I will note that the crawfish was not that fresh. Service was quick and friendly. They have you scan the table to start a group order, so extremely COVID friendly.

Yelp
This restaurant reminded me of late nights in China when my family would order 40 skewers at a time of beef, lamp, chicken wings, and pork. They have a grab of 30 skewers - 10 beef, 10 lamb, and 10 pork. This is a great way to start your meal. The server brought the grab to my table, but he didn't tell us which meat was which, so my bf and I spent a couple skewers to determine which one was which flavor. We determined that pork was the best one of the three meats. Then, we had some fried squid - came in a set of three. The tentacle (you could see the suction cups!) part had the best chew! We also got beef tendons. The beef tendons were extremely flavorful and juicy - it comes as an order of three skewers as well. Finally, we had to try the lotus root skewers because that is one of my favorite vegetables. The lotus root was cut thinly. It didn't have quite a crunch that you would expect. You can tell they boiled the root before grilling it. Not as good as I thought it would be.

Yelp
great food and friendly service! one of the only restaurants in the area serving a variety of bbq meat, including kidney and feet skewers! i always look forward to it!

Yelp
They are lying!!! Be careful! The web posted you can get 20% off when you make order, but when I pick it up they told me it is can not be used! Terrible attitude, terrible service.

Yelp
Best bbq in the city! Literally everything was so flavorful and tender. Great place for large groups and celebrations or just casual bbq.

William C.

Yelp
It's a nice little restaurant. I really liked the mood of the place, and I thought there was a lot of variety in food. Most importantly all the meat skewers were really good! I loved the spice that was used on the meat, although the drawback is that they use it on everything. Having tried authentic Chinese BBQ in China, I will say this place tastes just as good as the real deal!

mt H.

Yelp
There is not only bbq skewers they also have hot dish . I like chilly tofu with fish pot and oyster.

Yelp
I ordered take out for our party last week. Seafood pot. Clam. Lamb bbq. Beef bbq. Chicken bbq. Chicken wing. Fried instant noodles. Sausage. Egglant. Yummy! Definitely will order again.
google avatar

Anan Y.

Yelp
Ordered takeout on Grubhub and wasn't too satisfied with their food. Beef Malatang (麻辣烫)is too sweet and 冒毛肚 is too dry and chewy. I like their 冒鸭血 because their 鸭血 is not hardened and they put crushed peanuts on top of it. I ordered an order of bbq chicken wing and it came wrapped in the foil, that was a little dry (not juicy) but the taste was good.

Yelp
This place was hyped up for its NYC locations before and I'm excited that this authentic and popular Chinese BBQ restaurant eventually found its way in Boston! Haggis Soup in Pot (羊杂汤)- highly recommend! Haggis is a savoury mix of lamb/sheep's pluck (heart, liver and lungs). Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavor! It's rarely seen here in US, let alone cook it as well as it here! It's a whole new level of northern Chinese food! Seafood Rice Noodle Soup was great, too! Full of flavors and beautiful in color! Very fulfilling with one bowl! All the skewers are great! I came here with my friends on its second soft opening day. The wait was bad :/ we were told to wait 20-30 min but turned out over 1 hour, which was not pleasant. Waiters are very nice and friendly but not quite attentive. They kept apologizing for inefficient operation of the restaurant but I'd rather receiving fast service than apologies. I believe it will get better with a little effort though! Will come back!

Yelp
Disappointing meal. We ordered the 21.99 30 mini skewers. When they served it, the meat was cold and dry. We need to use the candle to warm up meat. I wonder if they precooked the meat before we even sat down. Not recommended

Yelp
Most foods are fine, but pricy. The lamb bbq we had were burned and dried. People in the restaurant need to communicate to each other more. I saw 3 groups of guest ask to move new locations which I unusually in a well organized restaurant.

Lulu Z.

Yelp
Food was tasty and authentic, but some of the items are on the pricey side. We ordered the Haggis Soup, Skewers, and Green Onion pancakes. The highlight of the meal would be the haggis soup, which was quickly served, steaming hot, and had tender flavorful pieces of lamb pluck. Great on a cold day. The green onion pancakes, on the other hand, tasted average. Def unimpressed with the portion given the price, which was only ~5-6small thin flimsy slices of lukewarm pancake served on a small plate but charged for $7. The skewers tasted good, however also on the pricier side ($4-5/3 skewers). Would recommend the pork intestine and chicken gizzard skewer. The free peanuts and shrimp crackers were a nice touch!

Yelp
I had been getting messages to check this place out, so we decided to check it out this past Saturday night. We got seated right away mostly because of the corona virus scare. The menu was little complicated so I went with previous yelp recommendations and got the Seafood rice noodle pot and was very disappointed. The soup came with 2 prawns and very blah. My daughter got the bbq beef fried rice and scallion pancakes that were ok. Probably should have just got the BBQ skewers. I was really hoping to like this place but probably won't go back
